• Understanding the problem when things break in production

  Scenario: You push to production The push broke multiple things That same build did not break qa or dev As a developer, you don't have prod access. There is lots of pressure from above to get things working agian. Specifics: PHP/MVC application that is API-driven in Zend. Deployed to a few servers. My question: While investigating, lets say I have a hunch that something is wrong. But, I don't know for sure. And, of course, I can't test things in production. If I have a suggested fix based on that hunch, would it be wise to try and apply it and see if it works, before understanding what the problem is?

I preferably have a black transparent background(Terminal-like). I'm asking this question because I was previously writing programs in .NET C# for myself, and now I don't want to get to Mono, but something more conventional.   One of the major benefits of the latest version of the Oracle SOA products, SOA Suite 11gR1 PS2 (11.1.1.3) and Oracle Service Bus 11gR1 (11.1.1.3), is that both products depend on the same version of WebLogic Server 11g (10.3.3) and so can be installed in the same domain. If you are a developer building artifacts for both but with a laptop/desktop with limited resources then this is particularly useful, as you can install a single server domain (by default you get a domain with an admin server and multiple managed servers) which incorporates both sets of functionality. The viewlet below shows you how to go about creating such a single server domain, using the configuration wizard. Just click the Play button from the viewlet menu to start it. Note: As you have added all this functionality into a single server, it will take a few minutes to start up. As this is my first foray into the world of viewlets I’d be interested in your opinion as to whether you have found this useful and any tips/techniques for improving any future viewlets I may create. • What is the Policy for Updating grub-pc in LTS?

  After having attempted an SRU request for a small patch to grub-pc for 10.04 LTS that fixes an issue that has left many people with unbootable servers nothing has been done for some time. The patch went through d-i into Maverick and only modifies a small amount of a single *.c file over a year ago. I updated the ticket with a debdiff of the patch and rebuilt the current grub-pc package plus the patch in a PPA and changed the ticket description to be the SRU request format subscribed the "sru" and "sponsors" teams but then nothing happened. Is there some policy against updating grub-pc in LTS that I don't know about? Thanks.

  On remotely rebooting a 12.04 machine I found it hanging at the "unable to mount soandso: Skip, Manual Abort? " (That's pretty much how I remember the message) The machine was basically stopped there until I hooked up a keyboard and pressed "s". I can see the rationale for the question, but I'd really like to know where to configure it or turn it off altogether. A mandatory question like this makes sense in a desktop environment but for servers I'd like more flexibility. So where do I fiddle and tweak this?

• Licensing approach for .NET library that might be used desktop / web-service / cloud environment

  I am looking for advice how to architect licensing for a .NET library. I am not asking for tool/service recommendations or something like that. My library can be used in a regular desktop application, in an ASP.NET solution. And now Azure services come into play. Currently, for desktop applications the library checks if the application and company names from the version history are the same as the names the key was generated for. In other cases the library compares hardware IDs. Now there are problems: an Azure-enabled web-application can be run on different hardware each time (AFAIK) sometimes the hardware ID for the same hardware changes unexpectedly checking the hardware ID or version info might not be allowed in some circumstances (shared hosting for example) So, I am thinking about what approach I can take to architect a licensing scheme that: is friendly to customers (I do not try to fight piracy, but I do want to warn the customer if he uses the library on more servers than he paid for) can be used when there is no internet connection can be used on shared hosting What would you recommend?

  I've been reading: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuCloudInfrastructure It's fascinating stuff, but documentation seems a bit sparse. Where I work, we have this aging, clunky VMWare ESXi setup for all our internal servers. I'd really like to read up on possible migration or just information on Orchestra, integration with Juju, etc that isn't a bunch of loosely connected blog posts. :p This is concerning 11.10 and, presumably, 12.04. To make this less vague, specifically documentation on: Orchestra - features, comparisons, videos, etc Integrating Juju with Orchestra - I'm familiar with using Juju for deploying on AWS, but that wiki page glances over connecting it to orchestra Building a private cloud - Advantages, using/deploying Openstack, etc Working with internal networks - Configuring DMZs, setting rules, etc Any recommended books would be appreciated too. I didn't intend for this to be a 'do all my homework for me! LMGTFY' post, I'm just hungry for information and haven't found a good repository of knowledge for much of this.

I would like to go on to say that not only does this apply to the DBCC commands but is some respect to all parts of SQL, other Servers, IDE's, Operating Systems, just about everywhere. There is always something that just does not make it into the official documentation. And as Paul points out probably never will make it. That could be why there are so many "Tips & Tricks" types of books, blog post, etc. everywhere you look. You may have DBCC in place, and all that fun stuff. But if you haven't restored the database, what do you have? You don't know. The trick is, restoring databases takes up a heck of a lot of space on your servers. To test all your productions backups, you'd need a system with as much space as production. unless.. Ever heard of SQL Virtual Restore? Check it out. With this, you answer Mike's questions and validate your backups without having to have twice the amount of space. That's a win, and we all know, winning is better than losing.

• What is the proper way to setup Google Apps email accounts for a subdomain?

  Let's say I've registered domain.com at enom and set it up to use Google Apps for email by rerouting DNS to enom's servers and editing the MX records there. That works flawlessly. Now let's say I want to have email at a subdomain for that same site. I already have a working subdomain at the host, but I want to catch email traffic at enom before it gets that far. I've set up Google Apps as a new account for the subdomain, successfully verified domain ownership, and now they want me to update MX records. What's the right format? For domain.com, I just put @ for the hostname, and then provided the Address and Pref values that Google gave me. I tried putting subdomain.domain.com as new values under hostname for the subdomain, but that doesn't seem to work. What am I doing wrong?

• What to do with database in dev/production phases of a website?

  For a while now I've been keeping a website I'm developing in the standard dev/production phases. Its been pretty simple: Mercurial repo for dev, repo for production. Do work in dev, get approved, push to production. But now I'm trying to apply this process to a new website that has a database and am struggling on how to figure out a development strategy. What I didn't mention above is that I do all my work on my own repo, push it to dev, then later push it to production, so its 3 different servers. So how do I manage my database? The obvious solution of mysqldump every commit isn't going to happen, and a dump at the end of the day isn't all that helpful when you want to undo later one change that happened in the middle of the day. What is the best way to accomplish this?

You should contact your network team if you have following messages: java weblogic.Admin -adminurl t3://adminServer.mydomain.com:7777 -username admin -password lockdown PINGFailed to connect to t3://adminServer.mydomain.com:7777: Destination unreachable; nested exception is:java.net.SocketException: Connection reset; No available router to destination A possible work around for the ping command is to use the HTTP protocol, instead of the t3 protocol. To enable this you must configure WebLogic to do HTTP tunneling. To enable, access the administration console, click servers-> server you want to reach-> protocols -> http -> enable Tunneling. no restart is necessary. And then, following command will work: java weblogic.Admin -adminurl http://adminServer.mydomain.com:7777 -username igmadmin -password l0ckdown PING

Users do not tend to go for those OSs (specially office environments) because most of the 3rd party software and tools (such as Photoshop, flash, Visual Studio) mostly can install only in windows operating system. So I'm thinking why we cant create a free OS same as Windows. That is capable to install software that created for windows. that can communicate with windows servers and exchange etc.. . Simply it should be a free OS with all the capabilities of Windows OS. How about your idea?

I started investigating the shift from Visual Studio 2010 to Visual Studio 2012 and specifically what needs to be done concerning those database projects in terms of painless migration, continuous integration and standalone deployment. • Using multiple A-records for my domain - do web browsers ever try more than one?

  If I add multiple A-records for my domain, they are returned in a round robin order by DNS-servers. E.g: 1.1.1.1 A example.com 1.1.1.2 A example.com 1.1.1.3 A example.com But how does webbrowsers react if the first host (1.1.1.1) is down (unreachable)? do they try the second host (1.1.1.2) or do they return a error message to the user? Are there any difference between the most popular browsers? If I implement my own application, I can implement so that the second is used in case the first is down, so it's possible. And this would be very helpful to create a fault tolerant website.

• Debian Stable vs Ubuntu LTS for Server?

  Quick question: Which is a better platform for a professional use server? Debian Stable or Ubuntu LTS? The third party software we plan to use, works on both. Which one is better on it own merits? Take into account things like the kernel (Ubuntu for example has its own custom kernel for servers), and other Ubuntu specific customizations. I keep switching back and forth, and I need to decide so I can recommend one or the other to a client. Right now, I think I am going to choose Debian Stable. Recently, I have had Ubuntu Server Edition 10.04.1 have a few strange issues... I have Ubuntu setup to do automatic updates via a simple script, and every few months or so, libapache2-mod-php5 gets removed because of conflicting packages... Thereby causing me to loose the php function of the web server. Debian Stable has not done anything like this.

• Directing from a 1und1 hosting solution, with urls intact

  Hi, I have done this before on GoDaddy without a hitch, but I cannot seem to figure out this particular case. I have a domain space with temporary url http://yogainun.mysubname.com/ and am hosting the domain name that is to be applied to it at 1und1.de. Right now I have set it up so that from the 1und1 domain name hosting the address http://www.yoga-in-unternehmen.de/ is frame redirected to the subdomain that I just referred to. But this is not what I want. http://www.yoga-in-unternehmen.de/ is to be the domain. With the frame redirect, url's like http://www.yoga-in-unternehmen.de/example-article do not show up. But this is what I want. With godaddy in a similar case, I just turned on DNS and changed the name servers. That worked without problem, but with 1und1 not. Is there something I am missing?
