• Java - learning with a simple project

  I remember when I learnt PHP, it was suggested that I code a simple blog or a forum after reading the language fundamentals and syntax. I was told/read that this would cover everything that I would learn about PHP in a beginners book. This advice was out there in a number of places, and after following and working with PHP it seems quite good advice. I am now learning Java, and reading the book Thinking in Java by Bruce Eckel. I wonder if there is any such set of similar, small projects that I could take up, that would cover all the essentials and most of what is covered in the book. Thanks.

• Best way to move site from subdomain to root through cPanel?

  I have an old Wordpress blog hosted on a subdomain (sub.mysite.com) with hundreds of posts. The root domain is actually empty and redirected to the subdomain. Now I want to move the site from the subdomain to the root domain. I found some .htaccess examples like this: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^sub.example.com$ RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://example.com/$1 [R=301,L] This redirection seems to work if I clone or move the subdomain site into the root domain but, Is there an easier way? I mean, just like when you redirect from www. to non-www. and you only have one site installation. The site would be kept installed on subdomain folder but it would be accessed from root domain, is it possible?

• Java EE @ NFJS Central Iowa Software Symposium Des Moines

  As some of you may be aware I recently joined the well-respected US based No Fluff Just Stuff (NFJS) Tour. The NFJS Central Iowa Software Symposium was held August 8 - 10 in Des Moines. The Des Moines show is one of the smaller ones but still was good overall. It is one of the few events of it's kind that take place this part the country so it is extremely important. I had five talks total over two days, more or less back-to-back. I had decent attendance for all my sessions and had many of the same folks staying for multiple sessions which is always a very good sign. I did talks on Java EE 7/Java EE 8, WebSocket, the Cargo Tracker Java EE Blue Prints, JavaScript + Java EE and NoSQL + Java EE. Here in SE podcast - http://blog.stackoverflow.com/2008/12/podcast-32/ One of our major performance optimizations for the “related questions” query is removing the top 10,000 most common English dictionary words (as determined by Google search) before submitting the query to the SQL Server 2008 full text engine. It’s shocking how little is left of most posts once you remove the top 10k English dictionary words. This helps limit and narrow the returned results, which makes the query dramatically faster.

  I have a personal website and just realized that the display is very different between Firefox (tested 19.0.2 and 25) and Chrome 30.0.1599.101 m Firefox display (this is how I intended it to look. In Chrome & IE9.0 the DIVs all seem to stagger on their own..... ? Im just an amateur and this is my personal blog for fun, Ive never had to troubleshoot a rendering issue like this one. Not sure how to go about doing it? Can Firebug help with determining where layout is inherited from? I have sample HTML if needed but didn't want to cloud up the questions a wall of text.

  I'm trying to understand the maths of moving points in a 3d space by making a game written in C#. I'm looking at this wolfire blog series which explains some basic 3d maths. I've read the first two parts but am stuck on the 3rd. I know it's all really rudimentary stuff but I find Googling for help with equations really hard. The one I'm struggling with is: 0*(0.66,0.75) + 2*(-0.75, 0.66) = (-1.5, 1.3) How can anything multiplied by 0 not be 0? So my question is how does this look in code: x(a,b) + y(c,d) I know it's basic stuff but I just can't see it.

  It occurred to me today that it might be useful to make a list of all the ways to earn money through either actual programming or just programming knowledge. I imagine it's probably a finite list as long as you stick to a reasonable level of granularity. Here's what I have so far: Trading your time for money (i.e. having a job or being a freelancer) Building your own software product (a full-fledged startup or a tiny mobile app or whatever) Giving talks at conferences and meetups Teaching students in a classroom Writing a book or blog (these are products, but non-software products) I've probably missed at least a few. What else is there? (I'm not sure whether this is an appropriate question, by the way. I think I would select the best answer based on how practical/original/interesting/numerous your suggestions are.)

  There are quite a few questions on Stack Overflow about the Linq to Entity / Linq to SQL Sum extension method, about how it returns null when the result set is empty: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and many more, as well as a blog post discussing the issue here. I feel it is an inconsistency in the Linq implementation. I am assuming at this point that it is not a bug, but is more or less working as designed. I understand that there are workarounds (for example, casting the field to a nullable type, so you can coalesce with ??), and I also understand that for the underlying SQL, a NULL result is expected for an empty result set. But because the result of the Sum extension for non-nullable types is also non-nullable, why does the Linq to SQL / Linq to Entity Sum behave this way?

• How to compare page views/visitors to site totals in Google Analytics?

  I want to measure the effects in total traffic (views or visitors) of a single URL across a time frame. For example, let's say I published a blog post on July 2012. I want to measure what chunk of the site's total traffic is coming to this particular post on a month-by-month graph from July 2012 to date. Is there a way to do this? Edit: I should clarify that what I'd like to do is to generate a month-to-month graph, similar to the one you can see comparing a metric on a period of time against the previous equivalent period (year vs last year, for example) but comparing a particular URL traffic to the site's total traffic. In other words, I can get to the part where I can see the URL's traffic for the timeframe I selected and it shows how much of the total traffic corresponds to the current URL: But I'd like to add a second line to the graph, representing the site's total pageviews, similiar to this (but this one is showing just a different metric for the same URL): Thanks!

In this talk, I discussed a Master/Detail application that runs on Android 2.2 devices and forward. I used the Actionbar compat Android library to allow the older devices to have an actionbar. I also used a SQLite database for my data. And just to add one last thing, I also incorporated the use of custom fonts. If you are interesting in looking at this sample application, I have uploaded it to my GitHub account here. • WPF Binding KeyDown event to Command

  Hello, I want to bind KeyDown event handler (when user presses Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V) on Telerik's GridView to RelayCommand object in my ViewModel.
