• Can you let users upload Sinatra apps and run them inside Rails as middleware?

  I want to let users write small custom apps (think themes or plugins on Wordpress) and upload/run them on my site. I'm thinking about using Sinatra apps for this since it would give the users a lot of flexibility, and then running them as middleware inside my rails app. But I can't figure out the security implications of this. I tried creating a simple sinatra app as middleware, and it has access to all the rails models and everything - so that is bad. Is there a way for rack to keep these separate so that the sinatra apps are effectively sandboxed and can't do any bad things (outside of an API or some specific way I setup for them to communicate)? There may be an easier way to accomplish this that I haven't thought of too, so ideas welcome. Thanks!

  Hi Everyone, I have a working Rails application on version 2.3.5 - I am using many to many model relations and have got almost everything working. What I would like to do is on my new kase page show the most recent kase job ref at the top. So for example, if I created a new kase with a job ref of "001", if I then went to create a new kase it would show at the top "Your previous kases reference was 001". I have the field of jobref in the new kase form, so I am trying to workout what I need to do to output only the last jobref. If that makes sense! Thanks, Danny

• Rails: Polymorphic User Table a good idea with AuthLogic?

  Hi everyone, I have a system where I need to login three user types: customers, companies, and vendors from one login form on the home page. I have created one User table that works according to AuthLogic's example app at http://github.com/binarylogic/authlogic_example. I have added a field called "User Type" that currently contains either 'Customer', 'Company', or 'Vendor'. Note: each user type contains many disparate fields so I'm not sure if Single Table Inheritance is the best way to go (would welcome corrections if this conclusion is invalid). Is this a polymorphic association where each of the three types is 'tagged' with a User record? How should my models look so I have the right relationships between my User table and my user types Customer, Company, Vendor? Thanks very much!

• How can I make Rails 3 router to localize url's using localization files?

  What I'd like to be able to do is: in config/routes.rb resources :posts in config/locale/en.yml en: resources: posts: "posts" new: "new" edit: "edit" in config/locale/tr.yml tr: resources: posts: "yazilar" new: "yeni" edit: "duzenle" and get I18n.locale = :en edit_post_path(3) #=> /posts/3/edit I18n.locale = :tr edit_post_path(3) #=> /yazilar/3/duzenle I'd also like rails to match any of these routes anytime and pass the associated locale in the params hash such that when I navigate to /yazilar , the request should be routed to the posts#index action. Any simple way of doing that?

• Why does a JRuby application on App Engine take so long to start?

  I'm considering using JRuby on App Engine but have heard that Juby app on App Engine have a long startup lag. Why is this? Is it because the JRuby jar files are so large that a cold startup requires them to be loaded into memory before the app can start serving? That would be my guess but I'm not sure if that's a precise technical explanation.

• Rails paginate array items one-by-one instead of page-by-page

  Hi Guys, I have a group of assets, let's call them "practitioners". I'm displaying these practitioners in the header of a calendar interface. There are 7 columns to the calendar. 7 columns = 7 practitioners per view/page. • Rails 3.1 assets not recognizing new images uploaded by rmagick until server restart

  I have my Rails 3.1.0 application running with passenger in production environment and I have a section where the application allows the user to change his profile picture so I upload the image using an ajax uploader and in my controller I upload the file and generate different sizes for the image with rmagick then I render the new image with an image_tag but the application won't show the image till I restart the server. What I get is No route matches [GET] "assets/path/to/image.png" If I restart the server It will show the image, but obviously I can't be restarting the server every once a user uploads a new image. How can I solve the keeping the assets working the right way?

• Regex issue with comma's telling me there are 6 args, instead of intended 4

  I have a scenario outline table that looks like the following: Scenario Outline: Verify Full ad details Given I am on the xxx classified home page And I have entered <headline> in the search field & clicked on search When I click on full details Then I should see <headline> <year> <mileage> <price> displaying correctly and successfully Examples: |headline |year |mileage |price | |alfa romeo 166 |2005 |73,000 |6,990 | When I run my scenario it spits out that I have 6 args. But what I thought, I should only have 4 args: headline, year, mileage and price. I am thinking that it is taking the comma's and what is before and after it as two seperate args. Is there any way that I can make cucumber think that there are only 4 args with the example below? I have looked at messing around with regex but I dont seem to be getting anywhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  Hi, I want users to enter a comma-delimited list of logins on the form, to be notified by email when a new comment/post is created. I don't want to store this list in the database so I would use a form_tag_helper 'text_area_tag' instead of a form helper text_field. I have an 'after_save' observer which should send an email when the comment/post is created. As far as I am aware, the after_save event only takes the model object as the argument, so how do I pass this non model backed list of logins to the observer to be passed on to the Mailer method that uses them in the cc list. thanks

First I want to set a mask using a partially transparent png, like this: mask do image "images/stencilMask.png" end Is this possible somehow or can only vector shapes be used? Apart from that, I noticed a small bug(?) when trying to set a transparent color as a stroke on any kind of text, like this: title "Hello", :stroke => rgb(1.0, 0.0, 0.0, 0.5) The transparency simply isn't applied.   After I did brew update and brew upgrade, my postgres got some problem. I tried to uninstall postgres and install again, but it didn't work as well. • Warbler: Where are my images

  I'm using Jruby and Warbler to deploy a Jruby on Rails application to a Tomcat server. I can see all of my images when I deploy the server with Webrick: jruby -S server/script. However, when I create a .war file out of the rails directory using jruby -S warble and deploy to Tomcat, none of my images show up on the tomcat server. I noticed that image location has changed to the root of the directory in the war file. It seems that /images/picturename.jpg would be appropriate, but my images are not showing up.

• Good way to handle inline-edit form using Rails and jQuery

  I have a list of items, being displayed in a series of DIVs. When someone clicks on an "edit" link, I want to replace the div with a form that will let them edit the contents of that item in a nice way. I'm trying to think of the ideal way to handle this. Do I create a hidden edit form for every item in the list, and hook the edit link to reveal it, like this: <div> <a href="#">edit</a> Item One <div id="edit_1202" class="editform">Edit form goes here</div> </div> <div> <a href="#">edit</a> Item Two <div id="edit_2318" class="editform">Edit form goes here</div> </div> Or is there a better way to fetch the data and insert the form's HTML into the right spot?   About three hours ago I started seeing the above error in my production server. It comes from a call to the sanitize gem: vendor/rails/activerecord/lib/../../activesupport/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:276:in 'load_missing_constant' vendor/rails/activerecord/lib/../../activesupport/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:468:in `const_missing' vendor/gems/sanitize-1.2.0/lib/sanitize.rb:91:in `clean!' vendor/gems/sanitize-1.2.0/lib/sanitize.rb:84:in `clean' vendor/gems/sanitize-1.2.0/lib/sanitize.rb:49:in `clean' app/helpers/application_helper.rb:28:in `display_none' app/views/main/_blogs.html.erb:13:in `_run_erb_47app47views47main47_blogs46html46erb' The error only occurs on the production server (linux), not my development machine (windows) I tried rolling back my latest deployment but it didn't fix it. I've updated to sanitize 1.2.0 (which was the latest version brought down by gem update sanitize, though I note my host is running 1.3.6. Can anyone provide any clues to help fix this?

• Rails: constraint violation on create but not on update

  Note: This is a "railsier" (and more succinct) version of this question, which was getting a little long. I'm getting Rails behavior on a production server that I can't replicate on the development server. The codebases are identical save for credentials and caching settings, and both are powered by Oracle 10g databases with identical schema (but different data). My Rails application contains a user model, which has_one registration; registration in turn has_and_belongs_to_many company_ownerships through a registration_ownerships table. Upon registering, users fill out data pertinent to all three models, including a series of checkboxes indicating what registration_ownerships might apply to their account. On the dev server, the registration process is seamless, no matter what data is entered. On production, however, if users check off any of the company ownership fields before submitting their registration, Oracle complains about a constraint violation on the primary key of the company_ownerships table (which is a two-field key based on company_ownership_id and registration_id) and users get the standard Rails 500 error screen. In every case, I've verified that no conflicting record on these two fields exists in the production database, so I don't know why the constraint is getting violated. To further confuse things, if a user registers without listing any ownerships and later goes back and modifies their account to reflect ownership data (which is done through the same interface), the application happily complies with their request and Oracle is well-behaved (this is both on production and dev). I've spent the past couple days trying to figure out what might be causing this problem and am reaching the end of my wits. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
