• Rails: Convert HTML to PDF?

  What is the best and easiest way of taking HTML and converting it into a PDF, similar to use CFDOCUMENT on ColdFusion? UPDATE: I really appreciate all the comments and suggestions that people have given so far, however I feel that people leaving their answers are missing the point. 1) the solution has to be free or open sourced. one person suggested using pricexml and the other pd4ml. both of these solutions costs money (pricexml costing an arm and a leg) which i'm not about the fork over. 2) they must be able to take in html (either from a file, url or a string variable) and then produce the pdf. libraries like prawn, rprf, rtex are produced using their own methods and not taking in html. please don't think i'm ungrateful for the suggestions, it's just that pdf generation seems like a really problem for people like me who use ColdFusion but want to convert to Rails.

• Rails OpenID Authentication Plugin No Longer Installs Rake Tasks?

  I'm following the Railscasts tutorial on using OpenID with AuthLogic. This command: $ script/plugin install git://github.com/rails/open_id_authentication.git installs the plugin, but I don't see any OpenID Rake tasks (rake -T). In particular, I can no longer run the task: $ rake open_id_authentication:db:create With previous applications, the Rake tasks were installed without a problem, so what's changed with the plugin? Which version of the plugin do I need to get the behavior I'm looking for? Using Rails 2.3.5.

  As part of a larger regex I would like to match the following restrictions: The string has 11 digits All digits are numbers Within the first 10 digits one number [0-9] (and one only!) must be listed twice This means the following should match: 12345678914 12235879600 Whereas these should not: 12345678903 -> none of the numbers at digits 1 to 10 appears twice 14427823482 -> one number appears more than twice 72349121762 -> two numbers appear twice I have tried to use a lookahead, but all I'm managing is that the regex counts a certain digit, i.e.: (?!.*0\1{2}) That does not do what I need. Is my query even possible with regex?

• Multiple forms on a single page

  I've got an app that's in invite-only beta right now. Problem is, I can't get the invite system to work. :( On my root page there's a login form (which works just fine), and I'm trying to add a "request invite" form on the same page. I started doing it by putting the form for InviteRequest (ActiveRecord) inside a partial, in the "views" folder for "InviteRequest". • RESTful design, how to name pages outside CRUD et al?

  Hi all, I'm working on a site that has quite a few pages that fall outside my limited understanding of RESTful design, which is essentially: Create, Read, Update, Delete, Show, List Here's the question: what is a good system for labeling actions/routes when a page doesn't neatly fall into CRUD/show/list? Some of my pages have info about multiple tables at once. I am building a site that gives some customers a 'home base' after they log on. It does NOT give them any information about themselves so it shouldn't be, for example, /customers/show/1. It does have information about companies, but there are other pages on the site that do that differently. What do you do when you have these situations? This 'home-base' is shown to customers and it mainly has info about companies (but not uniquely so). Second case: I have a table called 'Matchings' in between customers and companies. These matchings are accessed in completely different ways on different parts of the site (different layouts, different CSS sheets, different types of users accessing them, etc. They can't ALL be matchings/show. What's the best way to label the others? Thanks very much. =)

• How do I reconnect to Memcache when forking in rails?

  I have a rails 3 application, and a script called by rails runner. This script forks and does some stuff in other processes. I do the proper thing with ActiveRecord before forking, where I disconnect-fork-reconnect and all that jazz. My question is I also use memcache for the Rails.cache but should I be disconnecting-reconnecting that too for my forks? If so, how would I go about that in the rails way.

• Sending data remotely from iPhone native apps to Rails apps

  Dear all, I have decided to develop a native iPhone apps as a compliment to our webapps. Now I am wondering what are my options to send data remotely from the iPhone apps - since the database is online - to our online database. What I can think of on top of my head - since I come from web dev background - is JSON. My webapps is built using Rails, so I figure it would not be difficult to accept JSON request from the iPhone apps. But the next question is, is it difficult to send JSON data remotely from the iPhone apps? If JSON is not recommendable, what are my other options? Thank you so much for the assistance. • Authorize.net Parameters with activemerchant

  I'm using authorize.net and activemerchant in a rails app. When I make a purchase authorize.net sends back an email with information about the purchase. I should be able to send them the billing and shipping address information and have that returned in the email, but it's not returning any of the information, obviously I've got the varable names wrong, anybody know what they should be? I've been pouring over the authorize.net api docs and activemerchant's but can't find what I need. Is there any library/extension to log the requests and parse them, so that log analysis becomes easier and automated. RailsLogAnalyser is good but what about extra calls, what are the conventions? Something like a opensource/self-hosted alternative to newrelic, but with extensions to plug in your own logging.

  Hi there, I am using Amazon S3 to back up my Rails app's mysql database. And I am using astrails-safe plugin to do that and I got the "Your previous request to create the named bucket succeeded and you already own it. (AWS::S3::BucketAlreadyOwnedByYou)" error back whenever I try to update it. I have checked that the folder in which I am going to back up is there in my account already. It's just that I can't upload the files from the code (using astrails-safe). Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

  I have a time_select in which I am trying to set a time value as follows; <%= f.time_select :start_time, :value => (@invoice.start_time ? @invoice.start_time : Time.now) %> This always produces a time selector with the current time rather than the value for @invoice.start_time. @invoice.start_time is in fact a datetime object but this is passed to the time selector just fine if I use <%= f.time_select :start_time %> I guess what I'm really asking is how to use the :value option with the time_select helper. Attempts like the following don't seem to produce the desired result; <%= f.time_select :start_time, :value => (Time.now + 2.hours) %> <%= f.time_select :start_time, :value => "14:30" %>

• Multiple merchant accounts with Activemerchant gem.

  I am developing a rails site that will allow a group of merchants (5 - 10) to accept credit card orders online. I plan on using the Activemerchant gem to handle the processing. In this case, each merchant will have their own merchant accounts to handle the payments. Storing banking information like that is not something I am a fan of. This could be solved by queing orders and allowing the merchant to log in to the site, input their credentials and process the order. However, if I go that route then it seems to me that I would have to store the customers' credit card information temporarily until the merchant has the opportunity to log in and process the order, which to me is the greater evil. Has anyone dealt with this situation? If so, what are the options available and what pitfalls should I look out for? In my mind, security customer credit card information is priority number one with the merchant account information a close second.

• Git access on Heroku deployment and others: connection refused

  I have suddenly run into an issue using git. I created a new app, went to push to Heroku and now see: ssh: connect to host heroku.com port 22: Connection refused My other previously working Heroku apps no longer work, receiving the same error. Other Heroku commands work (create, info, db:push). I also see the error when accessing Git on my unfuddle accounts. I can SSH to other services, so it doesn't look like it's my machine. Any ideas?

  i would like to initialize database the first time the server is started, that involve calling a class method. Given the class name is: Product At first i put an .rb file config\initializers\init.rb as it gets automatically called. Everything works ok, until the database is deleted, and i am trying to do rake db:migrate. rake db:migrate fails saying that cannot find 'product' table. inside init.rb = Product.populate_db The solution i came up is: I took out init.rb do rake db:migrate put back init.rb run the server. My rails application is mainly for reporting and the data is seeded from other application, so i have to do the above step everyday Is there a better way to do the initialization?

• Factory Girl sequence fails under autospec

When I run autospec, it fails right away, claiming that the email address is being used twice in two different objects (there is a validation which restricts this).
