  • What is a Linux device name for RAID of sas drives?

    I have a RAID1 using Promise FastTrack TX2650 consisting of 2 SAS drives. What is a Linux device name for them? Like sda is for first sata drive. I have Windows server so I can't look it directly but need this information for smartctl usage. UPDATE. I found how to access RAID: smartctl -d scsi sdb (because I also have a SATA drive). But in this case I just get an information about just raid controller though I wantto get information about drives itself. Is it possible? Promises's control panel provides information only about their healthy status (boolean) and I want more. Mostly now I need information about temperature.

  • SBS 08 Backup fail

    Hi, I'm trying to backup my SBS 08 (only C:) with Windows Server Backup. It fails a few minutes after it started : Backup started at '08/12/2009 1:27:23 PM' failed as Volume Shadow copy operation failed for backup volumes with following error code '2155348022'. Please rerun backup once issue is resolved. In the EventViewer i have lots of error : VSS : 12289 SQLVDI : 1 MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE : 18210 MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE : 3041 SQLWRITER : 24583 All VSS ans SQL services are started. I have WSUS 3.0, Exchange 07. I don't have any third party backup software running at the same time. Thanks for your help !

    I am going to be using some DSQUERY/DSMOVE scripts to clean up my AD Domin. One option is to move inactive objects to a OU that has restrictive GPOs applied to it. Something like: DSQUERY computer -inactive 10 | DSMOVE -newparent <distinguished name of target OU> My question is what value defines an object, both user and computer, as "inactive" for a period of time? Is it the last time a computer was logged on to for computer accounts, and for users is it the last time that the user account logged on to a computer? But what if, say for example, I had a web server that wasn't rebooted and or logged into for a couple of months but remain powered on and functioning as normal, would it be defined as "inactive" where as technically it's still serving web pages and so on?   • Can I monitor active user count on my iis sites?

    We are having problems with performance on our server that host our websites that the processor gets upp to 90%. I would like to monitor the amount of users active on your sites that are published on the iis. My question, is this possible? is there any software for this? EDIT current (like this second) visitor count on all the active websites on our iis REASON FOR THIS if i can get the visitor amount on the days the CPU is not overloaded and and compare it to the days it is then i atleast know that this CAN be a reason why this is happening and i can take it from there. Otherwise i can focus on the code on the sites, or maybe google crawler is causing this, there are manythings that can cause this you know? for me this is just a simple way of troubleshooting.

    I inquired with the support of justcloud.com telling them that I have a vmware vm that I was wondering if it could be backed up while in use. I can back up the vm once it is shut down but I was wondering if their "shadow copy" would back it up while running. This was their response: Thank you for your email. I am really very sorry but virtual machines can't be backed up for a simple reason that they are virtual, they have virtual memory, not physical memory. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help with. Am I wrong in thinking that a vm can be backed up while in use? Does this response even make sense? I need a cheap alternative to backing up the vm off the server in case it goes down.     I've been testing native vhd boot on several servers. It seems to be pretty transparent in terms of deployment and with my seat of the pants testing I have not noticed any difference in performance. The main reason that I want to boot vhd is due to their transportablility between different hardware and to hyper-v servers. the following roles will be installed. dfsr dhcp iis application server dc <- haven't tested this yet but see no reason why it won't work. With the above low impact (in terms of performance) roles do you thing booting from VHD is appropriate. thx

  • Application Event Log keeps getting corrupted

    I recently asked about repairing a corrupt event log, because it seemed to be a one-off event. The event log has since exhibited the same behavior 3 times. We have been trying to find patterns, but so far we have found nothing. The server runs several ASP.NET applications and three scheduled tasks written in .NET. The last modified date of the event log once happened to be the same time as one of the scheduled tasks, but the others have not been. Any suggestions of where to look next or a way we can get any information out of a corrupt evtx file? The server is running critical e-commerce applications, so we want to keep the number of restarts required to a minimum.   • Difference in DLL when compiling on Build Server instead of Dev Machine.

    I have an application that loads user controls into .NET web application. When I compile and test the application locally on my dev machine it works on my machine. The project builds successfully using MSBuild on our build server. However when I deploy the dll generated by MSBuild on the build server I get the following error when the application loads the control: BC30456: 'CreateResourceBasedLiteralControl' is not a member of 'ASP.usercontrols_somecontrol_ascx'. I took a look and compared the dll generated on my machine and compared it(looked at the file size) with the one created by the build server and noticed a difference in the file size. This is confusing considering the code being built locally and on the build server is IDENTICAL. I manually compared each file by hand. So my question is: What is causing this error? What would be different between MSBuild's compilation of the code and what is going on in Visual Studio when compiling the code?

    I use windows server 2008r2 with role Hyper-V. The guest system is Ubuntu 12.04 LTC. It is situated on the dynamic virtual hard disk. I want to compact this VHD (The real size is 50 GB, 360 GB on the disk). But I can not do this, because the Ubuntu file system is not NTFS. What do I need (gparted, sdelete, ...) for solving this problem? The main problem is that the filesystem is not NTFS, but ext4.

  • Cluster failover and strange gratuitous arp behavior

    I am experiencing a strange Windows 2008R2 cluster related issue that is bothering me. I feel that I have come close as to what the issue is, but still don't fully understand what is happening. I have a two node exchange 2007 cluster running on two 2008R2 servers. The exchange cluster application works fine when running on the "primary" cluster node. The problem occurs when failing over the cluster ressource to the secondary node. When failing over the cluster to the "secondary" node, which for instance is on the same subnet as the "primary", the failover initially works ok and the cluster ressource continues to work for a couple of minutes on the new node. Which means that the recieving node does send out a gratuitous arp reply packet that updated the arp tables on the network. But after x amount of time (typically within 5 minutes time) something updates the arp-tables again because all of a sudden the cluster service does not answer to pings. So basically I start a ping to the exchange cluster address when its running on the "primary node". It works just great. I failover the cluster ressource group to the "secondary node" and I only have loss of one ping which is acceptable. The cluster ressource still answers for some time after being failed over and all of a sudden the ping starts timing out. This is telling me that the arp table initially is updated by the secondary node, but then something (which I haven't found out yet) wrongfully updates it again, probably with the primary node's MAC. Why does this happen - has anyone experienced the same problem? The cluster is NOT running NLB and the problem stops immidiately after failing over back to the primary node where there are no problems. Each node is using NIC teaming (intel) with ALB. Each node is on the same subnet and has gateway and so on entered correctly as far as I am concerned. Edit: I was wondering if it could be related to network binding order maybe? Because I have noticed that the only difference I can see from node to node is when showing the local arp table. On the "primary" node the arp table is generated on the cluster address as the source. While on the "secondary" its generated from the nodes own network card. Any input on this? Edit: Ok here is the connection layout. Cluster address: A.B.6.208/25 Exchange application address: A.B.6.212/25 Node A: 3 physical nics. Two teamed using intels teaming with the address A.B.6.210/25 called public The last one used for cluster traffic called private with 10.0.0.138/24 Node B: 3 physical nics. Two teamed using intels teaming with the address A.B.6.211/25 called public The last one used for cluster traffic called private with 10.0.0.139/24 Each node sits in a seperate datacenter connected together. End switches being cisco in DC1 and NEXUS 5000/2000 in DC2. Edit: I have been testing a little more. I have now created an empty application on the same cluster, and given it another ip address on the same subnet as the exchange application. After failing this empty application over, I see the exact same problem occuring. After one or two minutes clients on other subnets cannot ping the virtual ip of the application. But while clients on other subnets cannot, another server from another cluster on the same subnet has no trouble pinging. But if i then make another failover to the original state, then the situation is the opposite. So now clients on same subnet cannot, and on other they can. We have another cluster set up the same way and on the same subnet, with the same intel network cards, the same drivers and same teaming settings. Here we are not seeing this. So its somewhat confusing. Edit: OK done some more research. Removed the NIC teaming of the secondary node, since it didnt work anyway. After some standard problems following that, I finally managed to get it up and running again with the old NIC teaming settings on one single physical network card. Now I am not able to reproduce the problem described above. So it is somehow related to the teaming - maybe some kind of bug? Edit: Did some more failing over without being able to make it fail. So removing the NIC team looks like it was a workaround. Now I tried to reestablish the intel NIC teaming with ALB (as it was before) and i still cannot make it fail. This is annoying due to the fact that now i actually cannot pinpoint the root of the problem. Now it just seems to be some kind of MS/intel hick-up - which is hard to accept because what if the problem reoccurs in 14 days? There is a strange thing that happened though. After recreating the NIC team I was not able to rename the team to "PUBLIC" which the old team was called. So something has not been cleaned up in windows - although the server HAS been restarted! Edit: OK after restablishing the ALB teaming the error came back. So I am now going to do some thorough testing and i will get back with my observations. One thing is for sure. It is related to Intel 82575EB NICS, ALB and Gratuitous Arp.

  • What tools are people using to measure SQL Server database performance?

    I've experimented with a number of techniques for monitoring the health of our SQL Servers, ranging from using the Management Data Warehouse functionality built into SQL Server 2008, through other commercial products such as Confio Ignite 8 and also of course rolling my own solution using perfmon, performance counters and collecting of various information from the dynamic management views and functions. What I am finding is that whilst each of these approaches has its own associated strengths, they all have associated weaknesses too. I feel that to actually get people within the organisation to take the monitoring of SQL Server performance seriously whatever solution we roll out has to be very simple and quick to use, must provide some form of a dashboard, and the act of monitoring must have minimal impact on the production databases (and perhaps even more importantly, it must be possible to prove that this is the case). So I'm interested to hear what others are using for this task? Any recommendations?

  • IIS/SMTP - unable to move emails from inetpub/mailroot/Queue due to file lock

    I have a listener that processes emails in the inetpub/mailroot/Queue directory. Once the listener is done processing an email it proceeds to move the email to another directory. However, moving the email is not possible due to a file lock by the process inetinfo.exe. I have noticed that this file lock is released after a period time that ranges from several hours to several days. You can see that the Queue directory can get pretty full over time. The only way I have been able to work around this is by manually stopping and starting my SMTP virtual server in IIS. Is it possible to release this file lock programmatically? If not, is it possible to expedite releasing this file lock?

  • CHKDSK always runs on Hyper-V image

    I am having a problem with one of my VM's. Every time it boots, CHKDSK runs and finds no errors, but it goes into an endless loop (CHKDSK/Reboot/CHKDSK). The only way I can get Windows to boot is by cancelling the chkdsk. Is there any way I can tell windows to not do it? What do you guys suggest? Can't redo server. I guess it's also fair to say I get the following errors in Event Viewer "The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume \Device\HarddiskVolume2" "The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume C:\" I only have 1 VHD attached, not sure what Volume 2 is. Thanks!

  • Installing W2K8 R2 on a Dell Poweredge 2850

    I'm a server novice and have been given a Dell 2850 (PERC 4e/Di). It has 3 blank HDs that I think are configured as RAID 5. I am trying to install W2K8 R2 SP1 on it. It doesn't have a DVD reader so I created an install USB. This works fine until it's time to copy files to the HD. It can't see a HD. There is an option to browse for drivers at this stage. Any idea what drivers I need and where to download them? I downloaded this driver RAID_DRVR_WIN_R227150.EXE but this failed with invalid signature.     For my work project we recently switched from visual studio 2008 to 2010 and we use an embedded instance of firefox to render webpages. The only problem we are having is that flash seems to crash the application. It seems that instead of linking dynamically to the runtime it needs its using the new 2010 one and is having issue with new and delete. Any ideas on how to fix instead of switching back to 2008?

  • Can I use manifests to consume a COM server without specifying its version?

    Two of our programs use the same COM server (also made by us) with the same class ids. Each program when installing copies the COM server files into its folder and regsvr32s the COM server. The problem is how to install the COM server so that the user can install either one or both of our programs into different folders in any order and likely of different versions. Clearly it's impossible without changing the class ids and that's lots of hassle with configurations. Ideally we would like to use manifests for that and go without regsvr32. The problem is every time I read about reg-free COM (for example, here) there's the version attribute in the assemblyIdentity. The version number should change every nightly build and I totally don't like the idea of (automatically) adjusting it. I understand why specifying dependency on a specific version is good, but it's completely useless in our scenarion. Is there a way to write manifests for both the COM server and the consumer so that they don't specify versions and just work with whatever version of the file happens to be in the folder? Also is there a way to restrict the search to the same folder as the consumer?

    How do I increase performance in OWA 2010 SP2? I am running CAS on a seperate installation, which has 8GB RAM and 4 CPU cores - running virtualized in a vmware environment. However, the load times are pretty bad, so is there any way to improve those? I am thinking of installing a linux cache-stuff-server in front of the OWA, but will that work?     Our situation We currently have many web applications that use LDAP for authentication. For this, we point the web application to one of our AD domain controllers using the LDAPS port (636). When we have to update the Domain Controller, this has caused us issues because one more web application could depend on any DC. What we want We would like to point our web applications to a cluster "virtual" IP. This cluster will consist of at least two servers (so that each cluster server could be rotated out and updated). The cluster servers would then proxy LDAPS connections to the DCs and be able to figure out which one is available. Questions For anyone that has had experience with this: What software did you use for the cluster? Any caveats? Or perhaps a completely different architecture to accomplish something similar?

  • Fabric and cygwin don't work with windows UNC paths

    I have some strange problems with fabric deployment to Windows Server 2008r2. The thing I try to accomplish is to copy some files to a shared folder with a fabric script (this script does a lot of other things too, but only this step gives me problems). This is the problem: When I try to access a UNC(Universal Naming convention) path I always get access denied kind of answers if I run the script in fabric. When I run the command in an ssh prompt (same user) it works fine. Examples: cmd: robocopy f:/.... //share result: in ssh this works fine, in fabric I get "Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type aat this computer." cmd: cd //share result: in ssh this works fine, in fabric I get "//share: Not a directory" Further information: uname -a and whoami return exact the same thing in fabric and ssh. I also tried things like mount, net use, but these commands all have kind of the same problem.

I have enabled FailedRequestTracing and have been able to see a detailed error code which is 403.502. I suppose over a very short period of time I am just pulling to much and the IIS blocks me. Is there a way I can configure the limit to enable larger number of requests and get rid of 403.502 error?

  • PHP + IIS Application Pool Identity Windows\Temp permissions

    I am currently running PHP (5.3) on IIS 7.5 on a Win2k8 R2 Web Edition Server and would like to know what, if any, problems or security vulnerabilities I may introduct into a system by assigning Read, Write, Modify & Execute permissions to either IUSR account or the IIS_USERS group for %SystemRoot%\Temp? Should I be altering permissions to that folder at all (as Windows reminds me I probably shouldn't when i attempt to change them)? Should I create a temp folder somewhere else and set permissions accordingly? The problem is when i set Anonymous Authentication (I'm guessing is a more secure option???) to use the App Pool identity, when starting sessions PHP gets stuck in a loop because it's unable to create session files in the %SystemRoot%\Temp folder due to lack of permission on the application pool user or IIS_USERS group. Another problem being ImageMagick (PHP Extension) is being denied access to %SystemRoot%\Temp to write temporary files so is throwing exceptions. I have tried searching Google however have not found anything that touches upon this subject specifically. Any help greatly appreciated.
