• What is a good solution for an adaptive iptables daemon?

  I am running a series of web servers and already have a pretty good set of firewall rules set up, however I'm looking for something to monitor the traffic and add rules as needed. I have denyhosts monitoring for bad SSH logins, and that's great - but I'd love something I could apply to the whole machine that would help prevent bute force attacks against my web applications as well, and add rules to block IPs that display evidence of common attacks. I've seen APF, but it looks as though it hasn't been updated in several years. Is it still in use and would it be good for this? Also, what other solutions are out there that would manipulate iptables to behave in some adaptive fashion? I'm running Ubuntu Linux, if that helps.

• Help with refactoring PHP code

• Moving Away from Exchange public folders - Export to file system folder?

  I have a public folder that was used for the wrong reason. Due to some regulations we had to store lots of photos, we're talking at least 7000 photos that are stored based on a location of stores. So for example, each store would send in an email with at least 2 photos of their location, that email would contain their location name or number, and those photos, so there was some sort of organization for it. I would love to move the contents of that public folder to a normal windows folder we could share on a server. Is anything like that possible? Anybody have other ideas?

  I had a working Postfix server, but added a few lines to my main.cf in a hope to block some common spam. • Looking for WYSIWYG tool to create and edit HTML5 based presentations (slides)

  There are a lot of different implementations for HTML5 based slide presentations out there, like Google Slides or S5. But all that I have seen so far, seem to need a person being able to (and willing to) read and write HTML-Code. My company still uses Powerpoint, but some people are quite unhappy about its limitedness, e.g. the lack of possibilites to embed animation (other than just appear/disappear) without using flash. I'd love to suggest a state-of-the-art solution based on HTML5, but I don't even need to think about suggesting a solution where the project people need a techie to add or edit the content of a slide. I am not looking for an editor for non-technies to create complex HTML5/javascript based animations, of course, those should be done by a developer... basically non-technies should be capable of doing the stuff they are doing in powerpoint now. I'm currently hacking together a script that relies on the /proc/pid/environ feature in Linux (RHEL 4) to check for a particular environment variable. Trouble is, it seems certain environment variables aren't showing up in there for some reason. Example: create some test vars: $ export T_1=testval TEST_1=testval T=testval TESTING_LONGEST=testval open a subshell: $bash $ cat /proc/self/environ|tr "\0" "\n"|grep testval TESTVARIABLE_LONGEST=testval T=testval hmm... where did T_1 and TEST_1 go?? what rules govern this strange universe? • Quake 3 won't install on Windows 7

  Today I tried to install Quake 3 from my original 1999 CD on a Windows 7 laptop. Windows 7 resolutely refused to run the installer, helpfully explaining that I might need a 32- or 64-bit version, depending on what my OS is (you have to love those Windows error messages: absolutely correct, but as unhelpful as humanly possible). In any case, of course the 1999 software is 32-bit, and the laptop is 64-bit. But I was pretty sure that 64-bit Windows versions could handle running 32-bit software. What gives?

  Hi guys, I am sure this is server admin 101, but I am unsure of the answer and would love some help. I am a software developer I have built an application for a client and am currently hosting it successfully on SliceHost. We are now coming out of Beta and the client wants to have the application within their firewall, but they do not want to deal with headache of hosting and maintaining the server. Is there a way I can recommend that we put our server at SliceHost within their Firewall? Is that an easy thing to do? Their specific requirements are: For my application to authenticate against their Active Directory, and Only allow access to the application from within their network If that is not possible, what should I recommend to my client?

  Does anyone out their have rough (I don't need exact) pricing for Symantec (used to be Veritas) Storage Foundation for Windows? Its for Windows Server 2008 R2. Ideally, I would love to know the cost of Storange Foundation For Windows, and also the price of the options (like VRR, HA etc. ) if you happen to know them. Getting the information out of a reseller is like pulling teeth. They want to meet with us and discuss our needs etc. My needs are just to know whether its $100, $500, $1,000 or $10,000 per server in small qtys (i.e. less than 20 licences). Arghh. Anyone know the rough prices?

• SSO solution and centralized user mgmt for about 10-30 Ubuntu machines?

  Hello, I'm looking for a clean way to centralize user management. The setup: About 10-30 linux machines (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server) Maybe 10-30 users for now. The requirements (hopes and expectations): A single place for the administrator to manage user accounts, passwords and the list of machines each user has access to. (And probably groups.) Doesn't have to be fancy. Single sign-on for SSH: the user should be able to login from machine A to machine B without re-entering his/her password. A Quick Google searches give me pointers to OpenLDAP and Kerberos, but I'm not sure where to start and what problem will each solution actually solve. Which way to go? I'd love to find a clear that focuses on this subject. (Or: am I asking "a wrong question"?)

• Pointcast Alternatives?

  I used to love Pointcast in the early days of the internet; it was a screensaver that, like RSS feeds, brought in all your favorite sources with news articles and stock quotes along with various other info and turned it into a visually interesting screensaver. It was before broadband though and I heard so many work places had to ban it that the company eventually folded. But I wondered if there are any modern day equivalents? I certainly have feed readers and some awesome desktop gadgets that bring in various things like news and weather, and I don't want a whole screensaver like pointcast. But I wondered if anyone out there had other suggestions worth taking a look at; making some kind of feed display of interest, or some other way to turn favorite content into more animated desktop background, etc...

• Good documentation tool that is not Latex?

  I am far from being a expert in Latex but I'm ok to document my projects with it. Though I would seldom find people in the corporate word eager to learn latex and going along with the documentation. 99% of the cases they would just ask me the Word version of it. For technical documentation I find less resistance, but still, whenever I start a project with someone not familiar with latex, the starting up is troublesome. That said, latex is a bit of an oversize tool for my needs really. My documents hardly go further from tables, lists, few images and type styles (although I'd love to still be able to produce hyperlinked PDFs). What are other tools there, simpler and with a easier learning curve than Latex, but still PDF worthy and with minimally decent capabilities? It also has to run on windows :( Oh. yeah, MSWord is not an option ;)

• HFS partition mounting read-only

  Hey, I have an external Western Digital Hard drive with two HFS partitions with journaling disabled. When I connect it to a computer running Linux (Debian or Ubuntu), frequently both partitions are mounted read-only. In the past, mounting them on my Macbook and executing the command to disable the journaling often worked (even though it would tell me that journaling was already disabled) but I would love to have a solution which works every time. Thanks! Edit: In light of Chris Johnsen's comment below - my question is how to mount the filesystem read+write on Linux since it is not automatically doing so itself

• C++ std::vector insert segfault

  I am writing a test program to understand vector's better. In one of the scenarios, I am trying to insert a value into the vector at a specified position. The code compiles clean. However, on execution, it is throwing a Segmentation Fault from the v8.insert(..) line (see code below). I am confused. • mosh-like port forwarding

  This is on linux, connecting to linux servers: I love mosh, but it doesn't support port forwarding, and likely won't for a while since it's been almost a year now and it hasn't happened yet. port forwarding over ssh is great, but because my laptop moves between networks several times a day, my ssh sessions die, and so do the port forwards. I could script/hack something to detect hung ssh and reconnect to get my port forwards back, but before I do this, is there another way to do long lasting port forwards when your source IP changes several times daily (because you go on different networks)? I'm thinking an ssh over UDP would do the trick but of course ssh is over TCP.

  I just started using the file search program Everything at work to search through documentation on our shared drives. This is after disappointments with Google Desktop and Windows Search. I love the speed of Everything, but I wish it were able to index other shared folders. My makeshift solution was to somehow force Windows to recognize the necessary shared folders as local drives, then add them to the index list. I have also considered using SyncToy, but this requires downloading all data to my drive, which could be terabytes of information - obviously not a good idea on a small company network. What would be the best solution here?

• Automatically reboot Windows8 if no internet activity [migrated]

  I have a media server located in a very inconvenient part of my house. Occasionally I will have to reset my router or it will reset itself. The issue is the PC loses connectivity for some reason, and I am forced to walk outside, around the house, into the basement, over a bunch of toys and weights and boxes, to push a button to reboot it. I would love to have it check itself every 5-10 minutes and auto reboot if it is unable to ping a given address/IP. Any ideas how to accomplish this?

• Getting More Performance out of a MacBook Pro

  So I've got a mid-2009 MacBook Pro 13". Integrated GPU so not a games machine but fast enough for doing .Net development in VMs. I love the little thing and wanted to give it a Christmas present so thought I'd mod it up a bit and give it a boost. I'm thinking of swapping out the stock 5400rpm HD with a faster hybrid drive (has 4GB RAM and spins at 7200rpm) but was wondering if any of you had tried or knew of anything else I could change/upgrade/mod to squeeze more out of my laptop. The $("span").text are just so I know what's happening and will be turned into comments when the code is complete. So here is what happens, on Chrome and Firefox the output of the $("span").text for the position variables is correct, starting at 0,0 and always showing how much of the content was scrolled in coordinates, but on IE it starts on -2,-2 and never gets out of it, even if I manually scroll the window until the end of it and try using the right arrow key it will still return the initial value of -2,-2 and scroll back to the beggining. I tried substituting the offset for document.body.scrollLetf and scrollTop but the result is the same, only this time the coordinates are 0,0. Am I doing something wrong? Or is this some IE bug? Is there a way around it or some other function I can use and achieve the same results?   I'm going insane. I have an autosuggest box where users choose a suggestion. On the next suggestion selection the value of the text input box exceeds its size. I can move the carat to the end of the input field crossbrowser, no problem. But on Chrome and Safari I cannot SEE the carat at the end. The end of the text is not visible. • Long lag and errors clicking gmail links in google chrome

  I recently downloaded Google Chrome with Ubuntu 9.04 and love it. Ironically one site I consistently have issues with is gmail. When I enter gmail I will click a link, say an email or the inbox link. After a very long wait (on the order of 30 seconds to a couple of minutes) my page will load with an error such as: Some Gmail features have failed to load due to an Internet connectivity problem. If this problem persists, try reloading the page, using the older version, or using basic HTML mode. Learn More. Googling the symptoms has not helped. Has anyone else had any similar issues? Has anything helped?
