• Alternative to Rhythmbox that's light on CPU.

  I'm running Ubuntu Lucid on my netbook, and I like listening to music while doing other stuff. Problem is: Rhythmbox is constantly consuming 7-9% of my CPU while it's playing. Now, 9% might not seem like much, but it's more than double the sum of all other processes, and it's a battery killer. Now, I know that any music player will be active (not idle) while playing, and thus will consume more CPU power than idle processes. But I'd still like to know if there's a good music player for Ubuntu that's light on CPU.

• Flash drive shows in My Computer but can't be accessed.

  I have a flash drive. When I plug it into my (Dell, Windows XP) computer it appears in My Computer as an empty drive - not a disk with no files on, a drive with no disk in! Double-clicking drive J: gives the message "Please insert a disk into drive J" (I get the same if I type in "J:" to the address bar, too...) Someone suggested going to properties and entering a name but it won't let me type in this box. I've looked in the disk manager and again it appears as an empty drive. I'm thinking that it might be fried...Can anyone give me any advice on how to either fix it or tell for sure that it's gone?

• How do quotes/strings work in Powershell?

  I'm have a command line that works in the regular old Windows Command Shell, but somehow gets misinterpreted in Powershell (I'm fairly new to Powershell). sqlcmd -S .\SQLEXPRESS -i "f:\SQLBackups\ExpressMaint.sql" -v DB="ksuite" -v OPTYPE="DB" -v BACKUPFOLDER="f:\SQLBackups" -v REPORTFOLDER="f:\SQLBackups\Reports" -v DBRETAINUNIT="days" -v DBRETAINVAL="7" Powershell seems to be stripping the drive letters out of the arguments that require paths. For example, I get the following when I attempt to run the above command in Powershell: Sqlcmd: ':\SQLBackups': Invalid argument. Enter '-?' for help. Well sure it's invalid without the drive letter. I have tried variations on double quoting it, escaping it, etc. but can't get it to work. What am I missing that Powershell does differently?

• Replicate a big, dense Windows volume over a WAN -- too big for DFS-R

  I've got a server with a LOT of small files -- many millions files, and over 1.5 TB of data. I need a decent backup strategy. Any filesystem-based backup takes too long -- just enumerating which files need to be copied takes a day. Acronis can do a disk image in 24 hours, but fails when it tries to do a differential backup the next day. DFS-R won't replicate a volume with this many files. I'm starting to look at Double Take, which seems to be able to do continuous replication. Are there other solutions that can do continuous replication at a block or sector level -- not file-by-file over a WAN?

• Desktop stops working in Windows 7

  I'm having an odd problem on one of my Windows 7 machines. At machine startup, explorer.exe is working properly - I can use the Start menu, click on desktop icons, etc. At some later point, though, I lose the ability to interact with desktop icons. I can't double-click to open files on the desktop, and I can't right-click to see the properties window. Oddly enough the Start menu still works properly, and I can still open an Explorer window into my desktop and access everything. I can get around the problem by killing explorer.exe and restarting it using Task Manager, but it's annoying to have to do this over and over. Does anyone have any ideas? I took a look at startup files with msconfig and didn't see any obvious problems. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

• Difficulty analyzing text from a file

  I'm running into a rather amusing error with my output on this lab and I was wondering if any of you might be able to hint at where my problem lies. The goal is find the high, low, average, sum of the record, and output original record. I started with a rather basic program to solve for one record and when I achieved this I expanded the program to work with the entire text file. Initially the program would correctly output: 346 130 982 90 656 117 595 High# Low# Sum# Average# When I expanded it to work for the entire record my output stopped working how I had wanted it to. 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 High: 0 Low: 0 Sum: 0 Average: 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 High: 0 Low: 0 Sum: 0 Average: 0 etc... I cant quite figure out why my ifstream just completely stopped bothering to input the values from file. I'll go take a walk and take another crack at it. • What's the silliest programming mistake you've ever done? [closed]

  Despite not being a professional programmer, i use python or c to accomplish simple tasks. Once I needed a nasty equation to use with various data for physics lab. I thought that it would take a few hours if i used some mechanic calculator. Then i've written a python script to make things easier but something was wrong. After finding my mistakes one of which was forgetting to put ":", i realized that it had already took 2-3 hours, not to mention inventing satanic arithmetic techniques since i thought the errors was caused by my math :) Sometimes when you don't see it, you don't see it! Now i can find the syntax errors without thinking for a moment :) Any similar annoying mistakes that you've experienced?

  hello, i need some help with haar transformation, i have to apply it on an image. My math is bad, my english not all that awesome and i find it hard to understand from articles on the internet. I found this page http://www.cs.ucf.edu/~mali/haar/haar.cpp where the haar transformation is applied on 2d matrix. • Problem with ArrayList

  Hello, I'm reading an xml file from resources, that file contains a list of travel agencies location and adresses and i'm trying to put this list after parsing in an arraylist to use it with maps. So each time I use agencies.add(agency) it adds it to the array but also changes all previous items with the new value. • Using pow() for large number

  I am trying to solve a problem, a part of which requires me to calculate (2^n)%1000000007 , where n<=10^9. But my following code gives me output "0" even for input like n=99. • Files beginning with "._"

  Sometimes when my wife works on photos in Photoshop on her Mac, what she gives me back are all the photos I took, with their .jpg extensions in place, as well as a set of "ghost" files. That is, for every photo, there is an evil twin whose file name is the same ... except that it begins with "._". Also this ghost file are sort of "grayed-out" and don't open when double clicked. I suspect they are hidden files, (I have set windows to show all hidden files) but what find of hidden file -- on that, I'm clueless. I just delete these files and never have a problem with the photo (.jpg) files, but still I'm dying to know; what are they? Thanks

• Exchange server listening on port 25 but clients dont recieve emails

  My exchange server is listening on port 25, that is I can telnet into it and send an email but Outlook 2010/2007, OWA, and ActiveSync are not pulling down emails. Outlook 2010 specifically says Connected To Exchange Server and Updating Inbox but it never updates the inbox. Also, OWA shows some of the newer mail messages, but when I double click on one to open it up in OWA, it times out. Any idea what could be causing this? Also Exchange Transport and Information Store are started. Thanks!

• Application Servers(java) : Should adding RAM to server depend on each domain's -Xmx value?

  We have Glassfish application server running in Linux servers. Each Glassfish installation hosts 3 domains. Each domain has a JVM configuration such as -Xms 1GB and -XmX 2GB. That means if all these three domains are running at max memory, server should be able to allocate total 6GB to the JVMs With that math,each of our server has 8GB RAM (2 GB Buffer) First of all - is this a good approach? I did not think so, because when we analyzed memory utilization on this server over past few months, it was only up to 1GB; Now there are requests to add an additional domain to these servers - does that mean to add additional 2 GB RAM just to be safe or based on trend, continue with whatever memory the server has?

• Why do people tell me not to use VLANs for security?

  Hi Everyone, As per title, why do people tell me not to use VLANs for security purposes? I have a network, where a have a couple of VLANS. There is a firewall between the 2 VLANs. I am using HP Procurve switches and have made sure that switch-to-switch links accept tagged frames only and that host ports don't accept tagged frames (They are not "VLAN Aware"). I've also made sure that the native VLAN (PVID) of the trunk links are not the same as either of the 2 host VLANs. I've also enabled "Ingress Filtering". Furthermore, I've made sure that host ports are only members of a single VLAN, which is the same as the PVID of the respective port. The only ports which are members of multiple VLANs are the trunk ports. Can someone please explain to me why the above isn't secure? I believe I've addressed the double tagging issue.. Thanks

When I double-click on it though, it opens up the VBA editor. Do I have to add the items programatically as per the following question How do I add a combobox in Word? or is it possible to do this using the UI? The other question/answer refers to creating a form. Is there a step I've missed between creating a .dot to then create a form somehow before adding form elements to it? • Remap Copy and Paste shortcuts on a Mac

  I use Windows at work and a Mac at home. One of the biggest issues is the difference between the copy paste shortcuts on Windows vs the Mac i.e. Ctrl + C & Ctrl + V on Windows and on the Mac its Command + C and Command + V. Invariably its hard because of learnt motor skills where my hand always shapes itself to the Windows Ctrl + C configuration(I have been using Windows longer) I would like to remap the Copy and Paste to the Fn + C and Fn + V on the Mac. Why? Because the Fn key is actually the key that corresponds to where the Ctrl key is on Windows keyboards and since its the last edge key its easy to find. I have tried Double Command but it doesn't seem to have an option of turning Fn to the Command key.

What's more I want to generate the pictures from text files as I want to track changes in some VCS, any binary files are not suitable for that.

• How to Disable Hovering Selection Block in File Browser?

  I am changing from Windows XP to Windows 7. One thing I cannot stand about Windows 7 is that whenever you mouse over files in Explorer (or other file-browser), it highlights the files with a semi-transparent block. This is nice, but I want to be able to double-click on the white area background of the directory, and I can't do this with the highlighted selection always there. The hovering-block is always in the way of the background - especially if there are a lot of files in the directory. (I don't even know what that hovering-block is called; if someone enlightens me, I'll re-title my post) Is there any way to get the file selector to work like XP?

  The problem: I have a custom collection PagedList<T> that is being returned from my WCF service as PagedListOfEntitySearchResultW_SH0Zpu5 when T is EntitySearchResult object. • Microsoft mouse screws up my power settings

  Running a new computer with Windows 7 and 64-bit OS. Had a wireless Logitech mouse that worked perfectly with this set up. The mouse was old, and the buttons were sticking and causing double clicks, so I bought a new Microsoft Mobile Wireless 3000 mouse to replace it. The new mouse works perfectly, but now my screen saver is disabled and my computer won't go into sleep mode after 15 minutes as per my power setting. If I hook the Logitech mouse back up, screen saver works fine and computer goes to sleep as it should. Am I missing something, or is Microsoft's mouse just junk. Got no software with the new mouse, so no drivers seem available.

• Spotify stopped scrobbling to libre.fm - unable to login

  I've set Spotify up to scrobble to libre.fm using the hosts file hack, as specified on the wiki, adding these two entries to my hosts file. 149.20.54.250 post.audioscrobbler.com 149.20.54.250 ws.audioscrobbler.com This worked for a while. However, Spotify now tells me that it can't log in to libre.fm. I've double checked my username and password. I haven't changed anything else. Using nslookup confirms that the above names resolve to the correct IPs. So, how do I fix this?
