• How do I get syncdb db_table and app_label to play nicely together

  I've got a model that looks something like this: class HeiselFoo(models.Model): title = models.CharField(max_length=250) class Meta: """ Meta """ app_label = "Foos" db_table = u"medley_heiselfoo_heiselfoo" And whenever I run my test suite, I get an error because Django isn't creating the tables for that model. It appears to be an interaction between app_label and db_table -- as the test suite runs normally if db_table is set, but app_label isn't. • Menu items messed up while using MacVim with Vim Latex

  I just installed macvim yesterday and I have been trying to install vim latex today. The one thing I am confused about is the menu items on the top bar: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- <apple icon> File Edit Tools Syntax TeX-Suite TeX-Environments TeX-Elements ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Packages > |_____ | Templates > | 1: | | Macros > | 2: | |----------- | 3: | | Compile | 4: | | View |----- | ... | ------------- So in words if you go TeX-Suite -> Templates there is a sub menu with menu items: 1: 2: 3: 4:. Now I know that these templates live here: % pwd /Users/me/.vim/ftplugin/latex-suite/templates % ls IEEEtran.tex article.tex report.tex report_two_column.tex and they are named correctly. Also I know that the :TTemplate vim command should do the same thing. When I type that I get this result: Choose a template file: (1) IEEEtran (2) article (3) report (4) report_two_column Enter number or name of file : So I am thinking that this must be a bug in MacVim. Is this a reasonable assumption? Any fixes?

• [NSFetchedResultsController sections] returns nil?

  Hi Everyone, I am trying to resolve this for days at this stage and I'm hoping you can help. I have two ViewControllers which query two different tables from the same database using Core Data. The first ViewController is opened with the app and displays fine. • First Letter Section Headers with Core Data

  I'm trying to create a list of people sorted in a tableView of sections with the first letter as the title for each section - a la Address Book. I've got it all working, though there is a bit of an issue with the sort order. Here is the way I'm doing it now: NSFetchRequest *request = [[NSFetchRequest alloc] init]; [request setEntity:[NSEntityDescription entityForName:@"Contact" inManagedObjectContext:context]]; NSSortDescriptor *fullName = [[NSSortDescriptor alloc] initWithKey:@"fullName" ascending:YES]; NSArray *sortDescriptors = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects:fullName, nil]; [request setSortDescriptors:sortDescriptors]; [fullName release]; [sortDescriptors release]; NSError *error = nil; [resultController release]; resultController = [[NSFetchedResultsController alloc] initWithFetchRequest:request managedObjectContext:context sectionNameKeyPath:@"firstLetter" cacheName:nil]; [resultController performFetch:&error]; [request release]; fullName is a standard property, and firstLetter is a transient property which returns - as you'd expect - the first letter of the fullName. 95% of the time, this works perfectly. The problem is the result controller expects these two "lists" (the sorted fullName list and the sorted firstLetter list) to match exactly. If I have 2 contacts like John and Jack, my fullName list would sort these as Jack, John every time but my firstLetter list might sort them as John, Jack sometimes as it's only sorting by the first letter and leaving the rest to chance. When these lists don't match up, I get a blank tableView with 0 items in it. I'm not really sure how I should go about fixing this issue, but it's very frustrating. Has anyone else run into this? What did you guys find out?

• Spring maven libraries

  I would like to know why some of the libraries are not released during a normal release cycle. For example, from http://repo2.maven.org/maven2/org/springframework/ while spring-core have 3.0.3-RELEASE, spring-remoting and spring-jmx were released only in 2.0.8. Can someone tell me what this would mean? I agree that if there are no changes in the component say spring-jmx then they don't have to release it, but since 90% of the world uses Maven for dependency management can they not just re-release the same libs (of spring-remoting and spring-jmx?) I ask this because I declare my deps like, <dependency> <groupId>org.springframework</groupId> <artifactId>spring-core</artifactId> <version>${spring.version}</version> </dependency> <dependency> <groupId>org.springframework</groupId> <artifactId>spring-remoting</artifactId> <version>${spring.version}</version> </dependency> and I would prefer supplying one spring.version instead of keeping version numbers upto date for all components? The four libraries of interest to me are spring-dao, spring-support, spring-jmx, spring-remoting

• GenerateDSYMFile warning: unable to open object file

  The background: I have a project that I last built on 10.5 on a PPC computer using xcode v3.1. It builds against the 10.4 SDK. I now have a MacBook with 10.6 on it and Xcode v3.2.1. I installed the 10.4 SDK with xcode. So now I want to build the project on an intel chip on 10.6. I first get a build error because I have the wrong version of gcc setup so I change the build settings to use gcc 4.0. • Python Locking Implementation (with threading module)

  This is probably a rudimentary question, but I'm new to threaded programming in Python and am not entirely sure what the correct practice is. Should I be creating a single lock object (either globally or being passed around) and using that everywhere that I need to do locking? Or, should I be creating multiple lock instances in each of the classes where I will be employing them. Take these 2 rudimentary code samples, which direction is best to go? The main difference being that a single lock instance is used in both class A and B in the second, while multiple instances are used in the first. • Unit Testing in the real world

  I manage a rather large application (50k+ lines of code) by myself, and it manages some rather critical business actions. To describe the program simple, I would say it's a fancy UI with the ability to display and change data from the database, and it's managing around 1,000 rental units, and about 3k tenants and all the finances. When I make changes, because it's so large of a code base, I sometimes break something somewhere else. I typically test it by going though the stuff I changed at the functional level (i.e. I run the program and work through the UI), but I can't test for every situation. That is why I want to get started with unit testing. However, this isn't a true, three tier program with a database tier, a business tier, and a UI tier. A lot of the business logic is performed in the UI classes, and many things are done on events. To complicate things, everything is database driven, and I've not seen (so far) good suggestions on how to unit test database interactions. How would be a good way to get started with unit testing for this application. Keep in mind. I've never done unit testing or TDD before. Should I rewrite it to remove the business logic from the UI classes (a lot of work)? Or is there a better way?

• Hibernate : Opinions in Composite PK vs Surrogate PK

  As i understand it, whenever i use @Id and @GeneratedValue on a Long field inside JPA/Hibernate entity, i'm actually using a surrogate key, and i think this is a very nice way to define a primary key considering my not-so-good experiences in using composite primary keys, where : there are more than 1 business-value-columns combination that become a unique PK the composite pk values get duplicated across the table details cannot change the business value inside that composite PK I know hibernate can support both types of PK, but im left wondering by my previous chats with experienced colleagues where they said that composite PK is easier to deal with when doing complex SQL queries and stored procedure processes. They went on saying that when using surrogate keys will complicate things when doing joining and there are several condition when it's impossible to do some stuffs when using surrogate keys. Although im sorry i cant explain the detail here since i was not clear enough when they explain it. Maybe i'll put more details next time. Im currently trying to do a project, and want to try out surrogate keys, since it's not getting duplicated across tables, and we can change the business-column values. And when the need for some business value combination uniqueness, i can use something like : @Table(name="MY_TABLE", uniqueConstraints={ @UniqueConstraint(columnNames={"FIRST_NAME", "LAST_NAME"}) // name + lastName combination must be unique But im still in doubt because of the previous discussion about the composite key. Could you share your experiences in this matter ? Thank you !

  Hi All, I want to achieve the following aspects in the software I am building: 1. Customizable entity model 2. Customizable UI 3. Customizable workflow I have thought about an approach to achieve this, I want you to review this and make suggestions: Entity objects should be plain objects and will hold just data Separate Entity model and DB Schema by using an framework (like NHibernate?). This will allow easy modification of entity objects. Business logic to fetch/modify entities has to be granular enough so that they can be invoked as part of the workflow. Business objects should not hold any state, and hence will contain only static methods The workflow will decide depending upon the "state" of an entity/entities which methods on business object/objects to invoke. The workflow should obtain the results of the processing and then pass on the business objects to the appropriate UI screen. The UI screen has to contain instructions about how to display a given entity/entites. Possibly the UI has to be generated dynamically based on a set of UI instructions. (like XUL) What do you think about this approach? Suggest which existing frameworks (like NHiberante, Window Workflow) fit into this model, so that I will not spend time on coding these frameworks Also suggest is there any asp.net framework that can generate dynamic asp.net ajax pages based on a set of UI instructions (like Mozilla XUL)? I have recently been exploring Apache Ofbiz and was impressed by its ability to customize most areas of the application: UI, workflow, entities. Is there any similar (not necessarily an ERP system) application developed in C#/.Net which offers a similar level of customization? I am looking for examples of applications developed in C# that are highly customizable in terms of UI, Workflow and Entity Model

• Telerik vs. Infragistics for Silverlight

  Yes, this is certainly a duplicate question, but I wanted to get some fresh takes. My impression is that Telerik is a much more complete suite, but I'm really really turned off by the responsiveness of their controls. It just seems "clunky" in terms of responsiveness (I have a very fast computer and video card). Scrolling in a grid and transitions chunk, even in their latest demos where they claim to have good performance. I do like that their WPF suite matches their SL one in terms of API. Infragistics has fewer controls and less theming possibilities, but their controls are very responsive. Scrolling in a grid is fluid, as are their combo menus and all the other controls. I checked out ComponentOne and their controls seem analogous to Telerik's in terms of the points mentioned above but are a little less "pretty". Any thoughts from other users of these suites? Basically, what I'm looking for is a suite that will be highly performant and responsive, relatively customizable from a theming standpoint, and have enough functionality to develop a LOB SL application without having to use multiple suites to satisfy the majority of common requirements.

• Looking for advice on importing large dataset in sqlite and Cocoa/Objective-C

  I have a fairly large hierarchical dataset I'm importing. The total size of the database after import is about 270MB in sqlite. My current method works, but I know I'm hogging memory as I do it. For instance, if I run with Zombies, my system freezes up (although it will execute just fine if I don't use that Instrument). I was hoping for some algorithm advice. I have three hierarchical tables comprising about 400,000 records. The highest level has about 30 records, the next has about 20,000, the last has the balance. Right now, I'm using nested for loops to import. I know I'm creating an unreasonably large object graph, but I'm also looking to serialize to JSON or XML because I want to break up the records into downloadable chunks for the end user to import a la carte. I have the code written to do the serialization, but I'm wondering if I can serialize the object graph if I only have pieces in memory. Here's pseudocode showing the basic process for sqlite import. I left out the unnecessary detail.   HI This is just a question to check my sanity really. I'm hunting memory leaks that show up in instruments but not the static analyzer. If I add [randombutton release] at the bottom of the code my button fails to show. Could somebody describe to me the correct way to release a button from memory that is created in the above way? Or would I be better off making the button a class variable and sticking the release in the dealloc method?

  Hi I've read similar questions regarding that but still feel the need to ask a question. I have scenario where we have lots of tiny "features" pending for approval. I generally see two approaches. 1.Keep trunk solid and have tons of branches for each tiny "feature". Basically every new thingy is a branch. Cons: - Might become nightmare to support so many branches no matter how small a change. Keeping all branches in sync etc etc. - Worst con I see in this is setup of test system so one can easily examine changes to approve (basically need to support all branches which seems insane). Pros: - Seemningly easy once approved a branch to be merged back to trunk and new release to be tagged and deployed. 2.For big features a branch is released and for small changes all goes in trunk(relatively stable) directly. Pros: - Easier to set test system as most of the time all will be directly visible. For big features should be easy to maintain separate branch on test. Cons: - Don't really see how release will go. I will not be able to basically release one part of trunk This would involve cherrypicking which is crazy to follow. Other approach is I just enforce that after some time (a week or so) all small features need to be approved so they can deployed before giving new tasks. I just create release branch and either all or none of small features are going live. This will be some fun discussion with head people. I guess having lots of small pending stuff is very problematic to follow technically.

• iPhone Core Data does not refresh table

  Hi all, I'm trying to write an application with Core Data, and I have been able to successfully read and write to the core data database. However, if I write to the database in one view controller, my other view controllers will not see the change until the app is closed then reopened again. This is really frustrating. I'm not entirely sure how to get the refresh - (void)refreshObject:(NSManagedObject *)object mergeChanges:(BOOL)flag method to work. How do I get a reference to my managed object? Anyways, here's the code I'm using to read the data back. This is in the viewDidLoad method. • Is NSManagedObjectContext autosaved or am I looking at NSFetchedResultsController's cache?

  I'm developing an iPhone app where I use a NSFetchedResultsController in the main table view controller. Then, if before saving the context, I press cancel and go back to the main table view, nothing is shown as expected. However, if I restart the app, the object I created on the context shows in the main table view. How come? At first, I thought it was because the NSFetchedResultsController was reading from the cache, but as you can see I set this to nil just to test. Also, [context hasChanges] returns true after I restart. What am I missing here?

• Fetching Core Data for Tableview on iPhone - Tutorial leaves me with crashes when adding items to a

  Been following the Core Data tutorial on Apple's developer site, and all is good until I have to add something to the fetched store. I am getting this error after a successful build and load when I try to add a new item to the list: Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'Invalid update: invalid number of rows in section 0. The number of rows contained in an existing section after the update (0) must be equal to the number of rows contained in that section before the update (0), plus or minus the number of rows inserted or deleted from that section (1 inserted, 0 deleted). Due to the fact that the fetch goes through fine, and that if I replace the fetching with eventList = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init] it works as expected (without persistance, of course), I am led to believe that the problem comes from not creating the Mutable Array correctly. Here's the problematic part of the code: NSFetchRequest *request = [[NSFetchRequest alloc] init]; NSEntityDescription *entity = [NSEntityDescription entityForName:@"Event" inManagedObjectContext:managedObjectContext]; [request setEntity:entity]; NSSortDescriptor *sortDescriptor = [[NSSortDescriptor alloc] initWithKey:@"creationDate" ascending:NO]; NSArray *sortDescriptors = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects:sortDescriptor, nil]; [request setSortDescriptors:sortDescriptors]; [sortDescriptors release]; [sortDescriptor release]; NSError *error; NSMutableArray *mutableFetchResults = [[managedObjectContext executeFetchRequest:request error:&error] mutableCopy]; if (mutableFetchResults = nil) { //Handle the error } [self setEventList:mutableFetchResults]; [mutableFetchResults release]; [request release]; I have tried switching the NSArrays in the second chunk out with NSMutableArrays, but I still get the same error. • Aspect-Oriented Programming in OOP world - breaking rules ?

  Hi 2 all! When I worked on asp.net mvc web site project, I investigated different approaches for validation. Some of them were DataAnotation validation and Validation Block. They use attributes for setting up rules for validation. Like this: [Required] public string Name {get;set;} I was confused how this approach combines with SRP (single responsibilty principle) from OOP world. Also I don't like any business logic in business objects, I prefer "poor business objects" model, but when I decorate my business objects with validation attributes for real requirements, they become ugly (Has a lot of attributes / with localization logic and so on). Idea with attributes realy simple, but in my opinion the validation decoration should be separated from object. I'm not sure is the approach to separate validation rules to xml files or to another objects, maybe it is a solution. Another bad side of AOP - problems with unit testin such code. When I decorated some controller actions with custom attributes for example to import/export TempData between actions or initialize some required services I can't to write proper unit test for testing this actions. Do you think that attributes don't break srp or you just disregard this and think that it's simplest , is not worst way ? P.S. I read some likes articles and discussions and I just want to put things in proper order. P.P.S. sorry for my "fluent" english :=)

I need to parse out the individual sections of the address into their appropriate fields in a normalized table. I need to do this for approximately 4,000 records and it needs to be repeatable.
