  • PHP script keeps doing mmap/munmap

    - by Aurélien Momow
    Hello, My PHP script contains a loop, which does nothing much more than echoing and dereferencing pointers (like in $tab[$othertab[$i]]- stuff). It was working great until yesterday, when this script starting being VERY slow (like 50 times slower than before). After using strace, i figured out that 90% of the time, the script does mmap/munmap. Here is a random portion of the strace log : mmap(NULL, 266240, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x7fac0156c000 munmap(0x7fac0156c000, 266240) = 0 mmap(NULL, 266240, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x7fac0156c000 munmap(0x7fac0156c000, 266240) = 0 mmap(NULL, 266240, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x7fac0156c000 munmap(0x7fac0156c000, 266240) = 0 mmap(NULL, 266240, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x7fac0156c000 munmap(0x7fac0156c000, 266240) = 0 mmap(NULL, 266240, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x7fac0156c000 munmap(0x7fac0156c000, 266240) = 0 mmap(NULL, 266240, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x7fac0156c000 munmap(0x7fac0156c000, 266240) = 0 mmap(NULL, 266240, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x7fac0156c000 munmap(0x7fac0156c000, 266240) = 0 mmap(NULL, 266240, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x7fac0156c000 munmap(0x7fac0156c000, 266240) = 0 mmap(NULL, 266240, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x7fac0156c000 munmap(0x7fac0156c000, 266240) = 0 mmap(NULL, 266240, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x7fac0156c000 munmap(0x7fac0156c000, 266240) = 0 mmap(NULL, 266240, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x7fac0156c000 munmap(0x7fac0156c000, 266240) = 0 mmap(NULL, 266240, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x7fac0156c000 munmap(0x7fac0156c000, 266240) = 0 mmap(NULL, 266240, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x7fac0156c000 munmap(0x7fac0156c000, 266240) = 0 mmap(NULL, 266240, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x7fac0156c000 mmap(NULL, 266240, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x7fac0152b000 mmap(NULL, 266240, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x7fac014ea000 Here is the result of the strace -c command : % time seconds usecs/call calls errors syscall ------ ----------- ----------- --------- --------- ---------------- 82.77 0.004092 0 13542 mmap 9.69 0.000479 0 3642 write 7.54 0.000373 0 13541 munmap 0.00 0.000000 0 100 read 0.00 0.000000 0 88 poll 0.00 0.000000 0 25 4 access ------ ----------- ----------- --------- --------- ---------------- 100.00 0.004944 30938 4 total Here is the php script : function affAnnonce($tabAnnonces, $isDoublon = 0) { GLOBAL $db, $base, $tabDomaine, $doublon, $traduction, $tab_contrat, $tab_emploi, $tab_categ, $tab_metier, $tab_region, $tab_departement, $tab_secteur, $tab_experience, $calc_all, $tabLangues, $tabLanguesNiveau, $tabNoAffAnnonce, $tabHisto; foreach($tabAnnonces AS $tmp) { if (in_array($tmp['id'], $tabNoAffAnnonce) === true) { continue; } $value->host = "../"; foreach($tabDomaine AS $domaine => $valeur) { if ($domaine == $tmp['domaine']) { $value->host = $valeur->host; break; } } // Ordre // secteur;metier;contrat;emploi;region;langues;domaine $tabPushModif = array(); if ($tmp['push_preview'] != '') { $tabPushModif = explode(';', $tmp['push_preview']); $tabPushModif['secteur'] = $tabPushModif[0]; $tabPushModif['metier'] = $tabPushModif[1]; $tabPushModif['contrat'] = $tabPushModif[2]; $tabPushModif['id_emploi'] = $tabPushModif[3]; $tabPushModif['regions'] = $tabPushModif[4]; $tabPushModif['langues'] = $tabPushModif[5]; $tabPushModif['domaine'] = $tabPushModif[6]; } $infoSoc = get_nom_societe($tmp['id_societe']); $number = ($tmp['nb_preview_push'] != '' ? $tmp['nb_preview_push'] : '&nbsp;'); $secteurs = explode ("/", $tmp[secteur]); $sector = ""; $count_sect = count($secteurs); for ($k = 0; $k < $count_sect; $k++) { if ($secteurs[$k] != '') { $sector .= $tab_secteur[$secteurs[$k]].'/'; } } $tmp['poste'] = apresinsertion($tmp['poste']); $tmp['metier'] = $tab_metier[$tmp['metier']]; $tmp['region'] = $tab_region[$tmp['region']]; $tmp['departement'] = $tab_departement[$tmp['departement']]; $tmp['secteur'] = $sector; $tmp['id_contrat'] = $tmp['contrat']; $tmp['contrat'] = $tab_contrat[$tmp['contrat']]; $tmp['emploi'] = $tab_emploi[$tmp['id_emploi']]; $tmp['categorie'] = $tab_categ[$tmp['categorie']]; echo '<tr id="'.($isDoublon ?   • Android: Use XML Layout for List Cell rather than Java Code Layout (Widgets)

    Hi, I'm in the process of making a music app and I'm currently working on the library functionality. I'm having some problems, however, in working with a list view (In particular, the cells). I'm trying to move from a simple textview layout in each cell that's created within java to one that uses an XML file for layout (Hence keeping the Java file mostly semantic) This is my original code for the cell layout: public View getView(int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) { String id = null; TextView tv = new TextView(mContext.getApplicationContext()); if (convertView == null) { music_column_index = musiccursor.getColumnIndexOrThrow(MediaStore.Audio.Media.TITLE); musiccursor.moveToPosition(position); id = musiccursor.getString(music_column_index); music_column_index = musiccursor.getColumnIndexOrThrow(MediaStore.Audio.Media.DISPLAY_NAME); musiccursor.moveToPosition(position); id += "\n" + musiccursor.getString(music_column_index); music_column_index = musiccursor.getColumnIndexOrThrow(MediaStore.Audio.Albums.ALBUM); musiccursor.moveToPosition(position); id += "\n" + musiccursor.getString(music_column_index); tv.setText(id); } else tv = (TextView) convertView; return tv; } And my new version: public View getView(int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) { View cellLayout = findViewById(R.id.albums_list_cell); ImageView album_art = (ImageView) findViewById(R.id.album_cover); TextView album_title = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.album_title); TextView artist_title = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.artist_title); if (convertView == null) { music_column_index = musiccursor.getColumnIndexOrThrow(MediaStore.Audio.Albums.ALBUM); musiccursor.moveToPosition(position); album_title.setText(musiccursor.getString(music_column_index)); //music_column_index = musiccursor.getColumnIndexOrThrow(MediaStore.Audio.Media.DISPLAY_NAME); //musiccursor.moveToPosition(position); music_column_index = musiccursor.getColumnIndexOrThrow(MediaStore.Audio.Media.TITLE); musiccursor.moveToPosition(position); artist_title.setText(musiccursor.getString(music_column_index)); } else{ cellLayout = (TextView) convertView; } return cellLayout; } The initialisation (done in the on create file): musiclist = (ListView) findViewById(R.id.PhoneMusicList); musiclist.setAdapter(new MusicAdapter(this)); musiclist.setOnItemClickListener(musicgridlistener); And the respective XML files: (main) <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent"> <ListView android:id="@+id/PhoneMusicList" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" /> <TextView android:id="@android:id/empty" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="0dip" android:layout_weight="1.0" android:text="@string/no_list_data" /> </LinearLayout> (albums_list_cell) <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@+id/albums_list_cell" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content"> <ImageView android:id="@+id/album_cover" android:layout_alignParentLeft="true" android:layout_alignParentTop="true" android:layout_width="50dip" android:layout_height="50dip" /> <TextView android:id="@+id/album_title" android:layout_toRightOf="@+id/album_cover" android:layout_alignParentTop="true" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" /> <TextView android:id="@+id/artist_title" android:layout_toRightOf="@+id/album_cover" android:layout_below="@+id/album_title" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="15dip" /> </RelativeLayout> In theory (based on the tiny bit of Android I've done so far) this should work..it doesn't though. Logcat gives me a null pointer exception at line 96 of the faulty code, which is the album_title.setText line. It could be a problem with my casting but Google tells me this is ok :D Thanks for any help and let me know if you need more info!

  • Which is the better way to avoid magic string keys? Using string const keys in a class or using enumeration?

    - by user596314
    My idea is to avoid magic string keys in my Asp.Net MVC application. To do so, I want to create string constant keys to be shared in the application. For example, I can write TempData[MyClass.Message] or TempData[MyEnum.Message.ToString()] instead of TempData["Message"]. public class MyClass { public const string Message = "Message"; } and public enum MyEnum { Message, Others } My questions are: Which is the better way to avoid magic string keys? Using string const keys in a class or using enumeration together with ToString()?

  • How to map IDictionary<string, object> in Fluent NHibernate?

    - by user298221
    I am looking to persist user preferences into a collection of name value pairs, where the value may be an int, bool, or string. There are a few ways to skin this cat, but the most convenient method I can think of is something like this: public class User { public virtual IDictionary<string, object> Preferences { get; set; } } with its usage as: user.Preferences["preference1"] = "some value"; user.Preferences["preference2"] = 10; user.Preferences["preference3"] = true; var pref = (int)user.Preferences["preference2"]; I'm not sure how to map this in Fluent NHibernate, though I do think it is possible. Generally, you would map a simpler Dictionary<string, string> as: HasMany(x => x.Preferences) .Table("Preferences") .AsMap("preferenceName") .Element("preferenceValue"); But with a type of 'object', NHibernate doesn't know how to deal with it. I imagine a custom UserType could be created that breaks an 'object' down to a string representing its Type and a string representing the value. We would have a table that looks kind of like this: Table Preferences userId (int) preferenceName (varchar) preferenceValue (varchar) preferenceValueType (varchar) and the hibernate mapping would like this: <map name="Preferences" table="Preferences"> <key column="userId"></key> <index column="preferenceName" type="String" /> <element type="ObjectAsStringUserType, Assembly"> <column name="preferenceValue" /> <column name="preferenceValueType"/> </element> </map> I'm not sure how you would map this in Fluent NHibernate. Maybe there's a better way to do this, or maybe I should just suck it up and use IDictionary<string, string>. Any ideas?

  • How can I return json from my WCF rest service (.NET 4), using Json.Net, without it being a string,

    - by Samuel Meacham
    The DataContractJsonSerializer is unable to handle many scenarios that Json.Net handles just fine when properly configured (specifically, cycles). A service method can either return a specific object type (in this case a DTO), in which case the DataContractJsonSerializer will be used, or I can have the method return a string, and do the serialization myself with Json.Net. The problem is that when I return a json string as opposed to an object, the json that is sent to the client is wrapped in quotes. Using DataContractJsonSerializer, returning a specific object type, the response is: {"Message":"Hello World"} Using Json.Net to return a json string, the response is: "{\"Message\":\"Hello World\"}" I do not want to have to eval() or JSON.parse() the result on the client, which is what I would have to do if the json comes back as a string, wrapped in quotes. I realize that the behavior is correct; it's just not what I want/need. I need the raw json; the behavior when the service method's return type is an object, not a string. So, how can I have my method return an object type, but not use the DataContractJsonSerializer? How can I tell it to use the Json.Net serializer instead? Or, is there someway to directly write to the response stream? So I can just return the raw json myself? Without the wrapping quotes? Here is my contrived example, for reference: [DataContract] public class SimpleMessage { [DataMember] public string Message { get; set; } } [ServiceContract] [AspNetCompatibilityRequirements(RequirementsMode = AspNetCompatibilityRequirementsMode.Allowed)] [ServiceBehavior(InstanceContextMode = InstanceContextMode.Single)] public class PersonService { // uses DataContractJsonSerializer // returns {"Message":"Hello World"} [WebGet(UriTemplate = "helloObject")] public SimpleMessage SayHelloObject() { return new SimpleMessage("Hello World"); } // uses Json.Net serialization, to return a json string // returns "{\"Message\":\"Hello World\"}" [WebGet(UriTemplate = "helloString")] public string SayHelloString() { SimpleMessage message = new SimpleMessage() { Message = "Hello World" }; string json = JsonConvert.Serialize(message); return json; } // I need a mix of the two. Return an object type, but use the Json.Net serializer. }

  • django + south + python: strange behavior when using a text string received as a parameter in a func

    - by carlosescri
    Hello, this is my first question. I'm trying to execute a SQL query in django (south migration): from django.db import connection # ... class Migration(SchemaMigration): # ... def transform_id_to_pk(self, table): try: db.delete_primary_key(table) except: pass finally: cursor = connection.cursor() # This does not work cursor.execute('SELECT MAX("id") FROM "%s"', [table]) # I don't know if this works. try: minvalue = cursor.fetchone()[0] except: minvalue = 1 seq_name = table + '_id_seq' db.execute('CREATE SEQUENCE "%s" START WITH %s OWNED BY "%s"."id"', [seq_name, minvalue, table]) db.execute('ALTER TABLE "%s" ALTER COLUMN id SET DEFAULT nextval("%s")', [table, seq_name + '::regclass']) db.create_primary_key(table, ['id']) # ... I use this function like this: self.transform_id_to_pk('my_table_name') So it should: Find the biggest existent ID or 0 (it crashes) Create a sequence name Create the sequence Update the ID field to use sequence Update the ID as PK But it crashes and the error says: File "../apps/accounting/migrations/0003_setup_tables.py", line 45, in forwards self.delegation_table_setup(orm) File "../apps/accounting/migrations/0003_setup_tables.py", line 478, in delegation_table_setup self.transform_id_to_pk('accounting_delegation') File "../apps/accounting/migrations/0003_setup_tables.py", line 20, in transform_id_to_pk cursor.execute(u'SELECT MAX("id") FROM "%s"', [table.encode('utf-8')]) File "/Library/Python/2.6/site-packages/django/db/backends/util.py", line 19, in execute return self.cursor.execute(sql, params) psycopg2.ProgrammingError: relation "E'accounting_delegation'" does not exist LINE 1: SELECT MAX("id") FROM "E'accounting_delegation'" ^ I have shortened the file paths for convenience. What does that "E'accounting_delegation'" mean? How could I get rid of it? Thank you! Carlos.

  • Concatenating a string and byte array in to unmanaged memory.

    - by Scott Chamberlain
    This is a followup to my last question. I now have a byte[] of values for my bitmap image. Eventually I will be passing a string to the print spooler of the format String.Format("GW{0},{1},{2},{3},", X, Y, stride, _Bitmap.Height) + my binary data; I am using the SendBytesToPrinter command from here. Here is my code so far to send it to the printer public static bool SendStringPlusByteBlockToPrinter(string szPrinterName, string szString, byte[] bytes) { IntPtr pBytes; Int32 dwCount; // How many characters are in the string? dwCount = szString.Length; // Assume that the printer is expecting ANSI text, and then convert // the string to ANSI text. pBytes = Marshal.StringToCoTaskMemAnsi(szString); pBytes = Marshal.ReAllocCoTaskMem(pBytes, szString.Length + bytes.Length); Marshal.Copy(bytes,0, SOMTHING GOES HERE,bytes.Length); // this is the problem line // Send the converted ANSI string + the concatenated bytes to the printer. SendBytesToPrinter(szPrinterName, pBytes, dwCount); Marshal.FreeCoTaskMem(pBytes); return true; } My issue is I do not know how to make my data appended on to the end of the string. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and if I am doing this totally wrong I am fine in going a entirely different way (for example somehow getting the binary data concatenated on to the string before the move to unmanaged space. P.S. As a second question, will ReAllocCoTaskMem move the data that is sitting in it before the call to the new location?

  • Segmentation Fault when trying to push a string to the back of a list.

    - by user308012
    I am trying to write a logger class for my C++ calculator, but I'm experiencing a problem while trying to push a string into a list. I have tried researching this issue and have found some information on this, but nothing that seems to help with my problem. I am using a rather basic C++ compiler, with little debugging utilities and I've not used C++ in quite some time (even then it was only a small amount). My code: #ifndef _LOGGER_H_ #define _LOGGER_H_ #include <iostream> #include <list> #include <string> using std::cout; using std::cin; using std::endl; using std::list; using std::string; class Logger { private: list<string> *mEntries; public: Logger() { // Initialize the entries list mEntries = new list<string>(); } ~Logger() { // Release the list mEntries->clear(); delete mEntries; } // Public Methods void WriteEntry(string entry) { // *** BELOW LINE IS MARKED WITH THE ERROR *** mEntries->push_back(string(entryData)); } void DisplayEntries() { cout << endl << "**********************" << endl << "* Logger Entries *" << endl << "**********************" << endl << endl; for(list<string>::iterator it = mEntries->begin(); it != mEntries->end(); it++) { cout << *it << endl; } } }; #endif I am calling the WriteEntry method by simply passing in a string, like so: mLogger->WriteEntry("Testing"); Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

  • How do I resolve "Unable to resolve attribute [organizationType.id] against path" exception?

    - by Dave
    I'm using Spring 3.1.1.RELEASE, Hibernate 4.1.0.Final, JUnit 4.8, and JPA 2.0 (hibernate-jpa-2.0-api). I'm trying to write a query and search based on fields of member fields. What I mean is I have this entity … @GenericGenerator(name = "uuid-strategy", strategy = "uuid.hex") @Entity @Table(name = "cb_organization", uniqueConstraints = {@UniqueConstraint(columnNames={"organization_id"})}) public class Organization implements Serializable { @Id @NotNull @GeneratedValue(generator = "uuid-strategy") @Column(name = "id") /* the database id of the Organization */ private String id; @ManyToOne @JoinColumn(name = "state_id", nullable = true, updatable = false) /* the State for the organization */ private State state; @ManyToOne @JoinColumn(name = "country_id", nullable = false, updatable = false) /* The country the Organization is in */ private Country country; @ManyToOne(optional = false) @JoinColumn(name = "organization_type_id", nullable = false, updatable = false) /* The type of the Organization */ private OrganizationType organizationType; Notice the members "organizationType," "state," and "country," which are all objects. I wish to build a query based on their id fields. This code @Override public List<Organization> findByOrgTypesCountryAndState(Set<String> organizationTypes, String countryId, String stateId) { CriteriaBuilder builder = entityManager.getCriteriaBuilder(); CriteriaQuery<Organization> criteria = builder.createQuery(Organization.class); Root<Organization> org = criteria.from(Organization.class); criteria.select(org).where(builder.and(org.get("organizationType.id").in(organizationTypes), builder.equal(org.get("state.id"), stateId), builder.equal(org.get("country.id"), countryId))); return entityManager.createQuery(criteria).getResultList(); } is throwing the exception below. • Destroying a record via RJS TemplateError (Called ID for nil...)

    - by bgadoci
    I am trying to destroy a record in my table via RJS and having some trouble. I have successfully implemented this before so can't quite understand what is not working here. Here is the setup: I am trying to allow a user of my app to select an answer from another user as the 'winning' answer to their question. Much like StackOverflow does. I am calling this selected answer 'winner'. class Winner < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :site belongs_to :user belongs_to :question validates_uniqueness_of :user_id, :scope => [:question_id] end I'll spare you the reverse has_many associations but I believe they are correct (I am using has_many with the validation as I might want to allow for multiple later). • How to convert a string to a binary, then hex, value?

    - by Wuschelbeutel Kartoffelhuhn
    In one column I have a bitstring encoded as a string type. In a different column I wish to have the same bits (potentially starting with a leading 0), but as a binary value type. Ultimately, I want to have it in hex representation (string or hex type, doesn't matter) in a third column. How is this done? Do I have to program something for it or is there a faster way? Input cell contains the following string: 00000100100011000100100011 I wish to obtain the string: 0123123

  • Using the West Wind Web Toolkit to set up AJAX and REST Services

    - by Rick Strahl
    I frequently get questions about which option to use for creating AJAX and REST backends for ASP.NET applications. There are many solutions out there to do this actually, but when I have a choice - not surprisingly - I fall back to my own tools in the West Wind West Wind Web Toolkit. I've talked a bunch about the 'in-the-box' solutions in the past so for a change in this post I'll talk about the tools that I use in my own and customer applications to handle AJAX and REST based access to service resources using the West Wind West Wind Web Toolkit. Let me preface this by saying that I like things to be easy. Yes flexible is very important as well but not at the expense of over-complexity. The goal I've had with my tools is make it drop dead easy, with good performance while providing the core features that I'm after, which are: Easy AJAX/JSON Callbacks Ability to return any kind of non JSON content (string, stream, byte[], images) Ability to work with both XML and JSON interchangeably for input/output Access endpoints via POST data, RPC JSON calls, GET QueryString values or Routing interface Easy to use generic JavaScript client to make RPC calls (same syntax, just what you need) Ability to create clean URLS with Routing Ability to use standard ASP.NET HTTP Stack for HTTP semantics It's all about options! In this post I'll demonstrate most of these features (except XML) in a few simple and short samples which you can download. So let's take a look and see how you can build an AJAX callback solution with the West Wind Web Toolkit. Installing the Toolkit Assemblies The easiest and leanest way of using the Toolkit in your Web project is to grab it via NuGet: West Wind Web and AJAX Utilities (Westwind.Web) and drop it into the project by right clicking in your Project and choosing Manage NuGet Packages from anywhere in the Project.   When done you end up with your project looking like this: What just happened? Nuget added two assemblies - Westwind.Web and Westwind.Utilities and the client ww.jquery.js library. It also added a couple of references into web.config: The default namespaces so they can be accessed in pages/views and a ScriptCompressionModule that the toolkit optionally uses to compress script resources served from within the assembly (namely ww.jquery.js and optionally jquery.js). Creating a new Service The West Wind Web Toolkit supports several ways of creating and accessing AJAX services, but for this post I'll stick to the lower level approach that works from any plain HTML page or of course MVC, WebForms, WebPages. There's also a WebForms specific control that makes this even easier but I'll leave that for another post. So, to create a new standalone AJAX/REST service we can create a new HttpHandler in the new project either as a pure class based handler or as a generic .ASHX handler. Both work equally well, but generic handlers don't require any web.config configuration so I'll use that here. In the root of the project add a Generic Handler. I'm going to call this one StockService.ashx. Once the handler has been created, edit the code and remove all of the handler body code. Then change the base class to CallbackHandler and add methods that have a [CallbackMethod] attribute. Here's the modified base handler implementation now looks like with an added HelloWorld method: using System; using Westwind.Web; namespace WestWindWebAjax { /// <summary> /// Handler implements CallbackHandler to provide REST/AJAX services /// </summary> public class SampleService : CallbackHandler { [CallbackMethod] public string HelloWorld(string name) { return "Hello " + name + ". Time is: " + DateTime.Now.ToString(); } } } Notice that the class inherits from CallbackHandler and that the HelloWorld service method is marked up with [CallbackMethod]. We're done here. Services Urlbased Syntax Once you compile, the 'service' is live can respond to requests. All CallbackHandlers support input in GET and POST formats, and can return results as JSON or XML. To check our fancy HelloWorld method we can now access the service like this: http://localhost/WestWindWebAjax/StockService.ashx?Method=HelloWorld&name=Rick which produces a default JSON response - in this case a string (wrapped in quotes as it's JSON): (note by default JSON will be downloaded by most browsers not displayed - various options are available to view JSON right in the browser) If I want to return the same data as XML I can tack on a &format=xml at the end of the querystring which produces: <string>Hello Rick. Time is: 11/1/2011 12:11:13 PM</string> Cleaner URLs with Routing Syntax If you want cleaner URLs for each operation you can also configure custom routes on a per URL basis similar to the way that WCF REST does. To do this you need to add a new RouteHandler to your application's startup code in global.asax.cs one for each CallbackHandler based service you create: protected void Application_Start(object sender, EventArgs e) { CallbackHandlerRouteHandler.RegisterRoutes<StockService>(RouteTable.Routes); } With this code in place you can now add RouteUrl properties to any of your service methods. For the HelloWorld method that doesn't make a ton of sense but here is what a routed clean URL might look like in definition: [CallbackMethod(RouteUrl="stocks/HelloWorld/{name}")] public string HelloWorld(string name) { return "Hello " + name + ". Time is: " + DateTime.Now.ToString(); } The same URL I previously used now becomes a bit shorter and more readable with: http://localhost/WestWindWebAjax/HelloWorld/Rick It's an easy way to create cleaner URLs and still get the same functionality. Calling the Service with $.getJSON() Since the result produced is JSON you can now easily consume this data using jQuery's getJSON method. First we need a couple of scripts - jquery.js and ww.jquery.js in the page: <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <link href="Css/Westwind.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> <script src="scripts/jquery.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <script src="scripts/ww.jquery.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script> </head> <body> Next let's add a small HelloWorld example form (what else) that has a single textbox to type a name, a button and a div tag to receive the result: <fieldset> <legend>Hello World</legend> Please enter a name: <input type="text" name="txtHello" id="txtHello" value="" /> <input type="button" id="btnSayHello" value="Say Hello (POST)" /> <input type="button" id="btnSayHelloGet" value="Say Hello (GET)" /> <div id="divHelloMessage" class="errordisplay" style="display:none;width: 450px;" > </div> </fieldset> Then to call the HelloWorld method a little jQuery is used to hook the document startup and the button click followed by the $.getJSON call to retrieve the data from the server. <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $("#btnSayHelloGet").click(function () { $.getJSON("SampleService.ashx", { Method: "HelloWorld", name: $("#txtHello").val() }, function (result) { $("#divHelloMessage") .text(result) .fadeIn(1000); }); });</script> .getJSON() expects a full URL to the endpoint of our service, which is the ASHX file. We can either provide a full URL (SampleService.ashx?Method=HelloWorld&name=Rick) or we can just provide the base URL and an object that encodes the query string parameters for us using an object map that has a property that matches each parameter for the server method. We can also use the clean URL routing syntax, but using the object parameter encoding actually is safer as the parameters will get properly encoded by jQuery. The result returned is whatever the result on the server method is - in this case a string. The string is applied to the divHelloMessage element and we're done. Obviously this is a trivial example, but it demonstrates the basics of getting a JSON response back to the browser. AJAX Post Syntax - using ajaxCallMethod() The previous example allows you basic control over the data that you send to the server via querystring parameters. This works OK for simple values like short strings, numbers and boolean values, but doesn't really work if you need to pass something more complex like an object or an array back up to the server. To handle traditional RPC type messaging where the idea is to map server side functions and results to a client side invokation, POST operations can be used. The easiest way to use this functionality is to use ww.jquery.js and the ajaxCallMethod() function. ww.jquery wraps jQuery's AJAX functions and knows implicitly how to call a CallbackServer method with parameters and parse the result. Let's look at another simple example that posts a simple value but returns something more interesting. Let's start with the service method: [CallbackMethod(RouteUrl="stocks/{symbol}")] public StockQuote GetStockQuote(string symbol) { Response.Cache.SetExpires(DateTime.UtcNow.Add(new TimeSpan(0, 2, 0))); StockServer server = new StockServer(); var quote = server.GetStockQuote(symbol); if (quote == null) throw new ApplicationException("Invalid Symbol passed."); return quote; } This sample utilizes a small StockServer helper class (included in the sample) that downloads a stock quote from Yahoo's financial site via plain HTTP GET requests and formats it into a StockQuote object. Lets create a small HTML block that lets us query for the quote and display it: <fieldset> <legend>Single Stock Quote</legend> Please enter a stock symbol: <input type="text" name="txtSymbol" id="txtSymbol" value="msft" /> <input type="button" id="btnStockQuote" value="Get Quote" /> <div id="divStockDisplay" class="errordisplay" style="display:none; width: 450px;"> <div class="label-left">Company:</div> <div id="stockCompany"></div> <div class="label-left">Last Price:</div> <div id="stockLastPrice"></div> <div class="label-left">Quote Time:</div> <div id="stockQuoteTime"></div> </div> </fieldset> The final result looks something like this:   Let's hook up the button handler to fire the request and fill in the data as shown: $("#btnStockQuote").click(function () { ajaxCallMethod("SampleService.ashx", "GetStockQuote", [$("#txtSymbol").val()], function (quote) { $("#divStockDisplay").show().fadeIn(1000); $("#stockCompany").text(quote.Company + " (" + quote.Symbol + ")"); $("#stockLastPrice").text(quote.LastPrice); $("#stockQuoteTime").text(quote.LastQuoteTime.formatDate("MMM dd, HH:mm EST")); }, onPageError); }); So we point at SampleService.ashx and the GetStockQuote method, passing a single parameter of the input symbol value. Then there are two handlers for success and failure callbacks.  The success handler is the interesting part - it receives the stock quote as a result and assigns its values to various 'holes' in the stock display elements. The data that comes back over the wire is JSON and it looks like this: { "Symbol":"MSFT", "Company":"Microsoft Corpora", "OpenPrice":26.11, "LastPrice":26.01, "NetChange":0.02, "LastQuoteTime":"2011-11-03T02:00:00Z", "LastQuoteTimeString":"Nov. 11, 2011 4:20pm" } which is an object representation of the data. JavaScript can evaluate this JSON string back into an object easily and that's the reslut that gets passed to the success function. The quote data is then applied to existing page content by manually selecting items and applying them. There are other ways to do this more elegantly like using templates, but here we're only interested in seeing how the data is returned. The data in the object is typed - LastPrice is a number and QuoteTime is a date. Note about the date value: JavaScript doesn't have a date literal although the JSON embedded ISO string format used above  ("2011-11-03T02:00:00Z") is becoming fairly standard for JSON serializers. However, JSON parsers don't deserialize dates by default and return them by string. This is why the StockQuote actually returns a string value of LastQuoteTimeString for the same date. ajaxMethodCallback always converts dates properly into 'real' dates and the example above uses the real date value along with a .formatDate() data extension (also in ww.jquery.js) to display the raw date properly. Errors and Exceptions So what happens if your code fails? For example if I pass an invalid stock symbol to the GetStockQuote() method you notice that the code does this: if (quote == null) throw new ApplicationException("Invalid Symbol passed."); CallbackHandler automatically pushes the exception message back to the client so it's easy to pick up the error message. Regardless of what kind of error occurs: Server side, client side, protocol errors - any error will fire the failure handler with an error object parameter. The error is returned to the client via a JSON response in the error callback. In the previous examples I called onPageError which is a generic routine in ww.jquery that displays a status message on the bottom of the screen. But of course you can also take over the error handling yourself: $("#btnStockQuote").click(function () { ajaxCallMethod("SampleService.ashx", "GetStockQuote", [$("#txtSymbol").val()], function (quote) { $("#divStockDisplay").fadeIn(1000); $("#stockCompany").text(quote.Company + " (" + quote.Symbol + ")"); $("#stockLastPrice").text(quote.LastPrice); $("#stockQuoteTime").text(quote.LastQuoteTime.formatDate("MMM dd, hh:mmt")); }, function (error, xhr) { $("#divErrorDisplay").text(error.message).fadeIn(1000); }); }); The error object has a isCallbackError, message and  stackTrace properties, the latter of which is only populated when running in Debug mode, and this object is returned for all errors: Client side, transport and server side errors. Regardless of which type of error you get the same object passed (as well as the XHR instance optionally) which makes for a consistent error retrieval mechanism. Specifying HttpVerbs You can also specify HTTP Verbs that are allowed using the AllowedHttpVerbs option on the CallbackMethod attribute: [CallbackMethod(AllowedHttpVerbs=HttpVerbs.GET | HttpVerbs.POST)] public string HelloWorld(string name) { … } If you're building REST style API's this might be useful to force certain request semantics onto the client calling. For the above if call with a non-allowed HttpVerb the request returns a 405 error response along with a JSON (or XML) error object result. The default behavior is to allow all verbs access (HttpVerbs.All). Passing in object Parameters Up to now the parameters I passed were very simple. But what if you need to send something more complex like an object or an array? Let's look at another example now that passes an object from the client to the server. Keeping with the Stock theme here lets add a method called BuyOrder that lets us buy some shares for a stock. Consider the following service method that receives an StockBuyOrder object as a parameter: [CallbackMethod] public string BuyStock(StockBuyOrder buyOrder) { var server = new StockServer(); var quote = server.GetStockQuote(buyOrder.Symbol); if (quote == null) throw new ApplicationException("Invalid or missing stock symbol."); return string.Format("You're buying {0} shares of {1} ({2}) stock at {3} for a total of {4} on {5}.", buyOrder.Quantity, quote.Company, quote.Symbol, quote.LastPrice.ToString("c"), (quote.LastPrice * buyOrder.Quantity).ToString("c"), buyOrder.BuyOn.ToString("MMM d")); } public class StockBuyOrder { public string Symbol { get; set; } public int Quantity { get; set; } public DateTime BuyOn { get; set; } public StockBuyOrder() { BuyOn = DateTime.Now; } } This is a contrived do-nothing example that simply echoes back what was passed in, but it demonstrates how you can pass complex data to a callback method. On the client side we now have a very simple form that captures the three values on a form: <fieldset> <legend>Post a Stock Buy Order</legend> Enter a symbol: <input type="text" name="txtBuySymbol" id="txtBuySymbol" value="GLD" />&nbsp;&nbsp; Qty: <input type="text" name="txtBuyQty" id="txtBuyQty" value="10" style="width: 50px" />&nbsp;&nbsp; Buy on: <input type="text" name="txtBuyOn" id="txtBuyOn" value="<%= DateTime.Now.ToString("d") %>" style="width: 70px;" /> <input type="button" id="btnBuyStock" value="Buy Stock" /> <div id="divStockBuyMessage" class="errordisplay" style="display:none"></div> </fieldset> The completed form and demo then looks something like this:   The client side code that picks up the input values and assigns them to object properties and sends the AJAX request looks like this: $("#btnBuyStock").click(function () { // create an object map that matches StockBuyOrder signature var buyOrder = { Symbol: $("#txtBuySymbol").val(), Quantity: $("#txtBuyQty").val() * 1, // number Entered: new Date() } ajaxCallMethod("SampleService.ashx", "BuyStock", [buyOrder], function (result) { $("#divStockBuyMessage").text(result).fadeIn(1000); }, onPageError); }); The code creates an object and attaches the properties that match the server side object passed to the BuyStock method. Each property that you want to update needs to be included and the type must match (ie. string, number, date in this case). Any missing properties will not be set but also not cause any errors. Pass POST data instead of Objects In the last example I collected a bunch of values from form variables and stuffed them into object variables in JavaScript code. While that works, often times this isn't really helping - I end up converting my types on the client and then doing another conversion on the server. If lots of input controls are on a page and you just want to pick up the values on the server via plain POST variables - that can be done too - and it makes sense especially if you're creating and filling the client side object only to push data to the server. Let's add another method to the server that once again lets us buy a stock. But this time let's not accept a parameter but rather send POST data to the server. Here's the server method receiving POST data: [CallbackMethod] public string BuyStockPost() { StockBuyOrder buyOrder = new StockBuyOrder(); buyOrder.Symbol = Request.Form["txtBuySymbol"]; ; int qty; int.TryParse(Request.Form["txtBuyQuantity"], out qty); buyOrder.Quantity = qty; DateTime time; DateTime.TryParse(Request.Form["txtBuyBuyOn"], out time); buyOrder.BuyOn = time; // Or easier way yet //FormVariableBinder.Unbind(buyOrder,null,"txtBuy"); var server = new StockServer(); var quote = server.GetStockQuote(buyOrder.Symbol); if (quote == null) throw new ApplicationException("Invalid or missing stock symbol."); return string.Format("You're buying {0} shares of {1} ({2}) stock at {3} for a total of {4} on {5}.", buyOrder.Quantity, quote.Company, quote.Symbol, quote.LastPrice.ToString("c"), (quote.LastPrice * buyOrder.Quantity).ToString("c"), buyOrder.BuyOn.ToString("MMM d")); } Clearly we've made this server method take more code than it did with the object parameter. We've basically moved the parameter assignment logic from the client to the server. As a result the client code to call this method is now a bit shorter since there's no client side shuffling of values from the controls to an object. $("#btnBuyStockPost").click(function () { ajaxCallMethod("SampleService.ashx", "BuyStockPost", [], // Note: No parameters - function (result) { $("#divStockBuyMessage").text(result).fadeIn(1000); }, onPageError, // Force all page Form Variables to be posted { postbackMode: "Post" }); }); The client simply calls the BuyStockQuote method and pushes all the form variables from the page up to the server which parses them instead. The feature that makes this work is one of the options you can pass to the ajaxCallMethod() function: { postbackMode: "Post" }); which directs the function to include form variable POST data when making the service call. Other options include PostNoViewState (for WebForms to strip out WebForms crap vars), PostParametersOnly (default), None. If you pass parameters those are always posted to the server except when None is set. The above code can be simplified a bit by using the FormVariableBinder helper, which can unbind form variables directly into an object: FormVariableBinder.Unbind(buyOrder,null,"txtBuy"); which replaces the manual Request.Form[] reading code. It receives the object to unbind into, a string of properties to skip, and an optional prefix which is stripped off form variables to match property names. The component is similar to the MVC model binder but it's independent of MVC. Returning non-JSON Data CallbackHandler also supports returning non-JSON/XML data via special return types. You can return raw non-JSON encoded strings like this: [CallbackMethod(ReturnAsRawString=true,ContentType="text/plain")] public string HelloWorldNoJSON(string name) { return "Hello " + name + ". Time is: " + DateTime.Now.ToString(); } Calling this method results in just a plain string - no JSON encoding with quotes around the result. This can be useful if your server handling code needs to return a string or HTML result that doesn't fit well for a page or other UI component. Any string output can be returned. You can also return binary data. Stream, byte[] and Bitmap/Image results are automatically streamed back to the client. Notice that you should set the ContentType of the request either on the CallbackMethod attribute or using Response.ContentType. This ensures the Web Server knows how to display your binary response. Using a stream response makes it possible to return any of data. Streamed data can be pretty handy to return bitmap data from a method. The following is a method that returns a stock history graph for a particular stock over a provided number of years: [CallbackMethod(ContentType="image/png",RouteUrl="stocks/history/graph/{symbol}/{years}")] public Stream GetStockHistoryGraph(string symbol, int years = 2,int width = 500, int height=350) { if (width == 0) width = 500; if (height == 0) height = 350; StockServer server = new StockServer(); return server.GetStockHistoryGraph(symbol,"Stock History for " + symbol,width,height,years); } I can now hook this up into the JavaScript code when I get a stock quote. At the end of the process I can assign the URL to the service that returns the image into the src property and so force the image to display. Here's the changed code: $("#btnStockQuote").click(function () { var symbol = $("#txtSymbol").val(); ajaxCallMethod("SampleService.ashx", "GetStockQuote", [symbol], function (quote) { $("#divStockDisplay").fadeIn(1000); $("#stockCompany").text(quote.Company + " (" + quote.Symbol + ")"); $("#stockLastPrice").text(quote.LastPrice); $("#stockQuoteTime").text(quote.LastQuoteTime.formatDate("MMM dd, hh:mmt")); // display a stock chart $("#imgStockHistory").attr("src", "stocks/history/graph/" + symbol + "/2"); },onPageError); }); The resulting output then looks like this: The charting code uses the new ASP.NET 4.0 Chart components via code to display a bar chart of the 2 year stock data as part of the StockServer class which you can find in the sample download. The ability to return arbitrary data from a service is useful as you can see - in this case the chart is clearly associated with the service and it's nice that the graph generation can happen off a handler rather than through a page. Images are common resources, but output can also be PDF reports, zip files for downloads etc. which is becoming increasingly more common to be returned from REST endpoints and other applications. Why reinvent? Obviously the examples I've shown here are pretty basic in terms of functionality. But I hope they demonstrate the core features of AJAX callbacks that you need to work through in most applications which is simple: return data, send back data and potentially retrieve data in various formats. While there are other solutions when it comes down to making AJAX callbacks and servicing REST like requests, I like the flexibility my home grown solution provides. Simply put it's still the easiest solution that I've found that addresses my common use cases: AJAX JSON RPC style callbacks Url based access XML and JSON Output from single method endpoint XML and JSON POST support, querystring input, routing parameter mapping UrlEncoded POST data support on callbacks Ability to return stream/raw string data Essentially ability to return ANYTHING from Service and pass anything All these features are available in various solutions but not together in one place. I've been using this code base for over 4 years now in a number of projects both for myself and commercial work and it's served me extremely well. Besides the AJAX functionality CallbackHandler provides, it's also an easy way to create any kind of output endpoint I need to create. Need to create a few simple routines that spit back some data, but don't want to create a Page or View or full blown handler for it? Create a CallbackHandler and add a method or multiple methods and you have your generic endpoints.  It's a quick and easy way to add small code pieces that are pretty efficient as they're running through a pretty small handler implementation. I can have this up and running in a couple of minutes literally without any setup and returning just about any kind of data. • Regex split string but keep separators

    - by rwwilden
    I'd like to do a Regex.Split on some separators but I'd like to keep the separators. To give an example of what I'm trying: "abc[s1]def[s2][s3]ghi" --> "abc", "[s1]", "def", "[s2]", "[s3]", "ghi" The regular expression I've come up with is new Regex("\\[|\\]|\\]\\["). However, this gives me the following: "abc[s1]def[s2][s3]ghi" --> "abc", "s1", "def", "s2", "", "s3", "ghi" The separators have disappeared (which makes sense given my regex). Is there a way to write the regex so that the separators themselves are preserved?

  • Regex to match a whole string only if it lacks a given substring/suffix

    - by Ivan Krechetov
    I've searched for questions like this, but all the cases I found were solved in a problem-specific manner, like using !g in vi to negate the regex matches, or matching other things, without a regex negation. Thus, I'm interested in a “pure” solution to this: Having a set of strings I need to filter them with a regular expression matcher so that it only leaves (matches) the strings lacking a given substring. For example, filtering out "Foo" in: Boo Foo Bar FooBar BooFooBar Baz Would result in: Boo Bar Baz I tried constructing it with negative look aheads/behinds (?!regex)/(?<!regex), but couldn't figure it out. Is that even possible?

  • Render string to texture in Android and OpenGL ES

    - by Eddie Ringle
    I've googled around everywhere, but cannot find much for rendering strings to textures and then displaying that texture on a quad on the screen. Can someone provide a run-down on the process or provide good resources that describe how? Is rendering strings to textures even the best method for displaying text in an Android OpenGL ES app? EDIT: Okay, so LabelMaker interferes with alpha blending, the texture (created from a PNG with a transparent background) now has a solid black background, rather than a transparent background. If I comment out all the LabelMaker-related code, it works fine.

  • Linq 2 Sql DateTime format to string yyyy-MM-dd

    - by Bogdan Maxim
    Basically, i need the equivalent of T-SQL CONVERT(NVARCHAR(10), datevalue, 126) I've tried: from t in ctx.table select t.Date.ToString("yyyy-MM-dd") but it throws not supported exception from t in ctx.table select "" + t.Date.Year + "-" + t.Date.Month + "-" + t.Date.Day but i don't think it's an usable solution, because i might need to be able to change the format. The only option I see is to use Convert.ToString(t.Date, FormatProvider), but i need a format provider, and I'm not sure it works either.

  • C# regex. Optional match after string

    - by Oskar Kjellin
    I have an input like this test1.test2.part01 which I want to strip away to test1.test2. The only thing i know is that it will end with partxx and probably a dot before the partxx. However, it will not always be a apart. Another example of input might be testas1.tlp2.asd3.part10 which ofcourse should be stripped to testas1.tlp2.asd3. I've made all that, no problem. The problem is the dot at the end before partxx. My regex at the moment is: (.*).?part\d{1,2} But it will include the dot in the group. I do not want the dot to be in the group. The below works as I want it, given that the dot exists, but it will not always be there. (.*).part\d{1,2} How can I exclude the optional dot from the group?

  • .htaccess rewrite rule to add a string in the middle of the URL

    - by Mike Crittenden
    Using a .htaccess rewrite rule, I need to add "?q=" before the path on any URL's containing the word "imagecache" Therefore, if the URL is: http://mysite.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/myimage.jpg ...then it will really try: http://mysite.com/?q=sites/default/files/imagecache/myimage.jpg But that will ONLY happen if the URL contains "imagecache." Otherwise, it does no rewriting. Also, this will only happen if /sites/default/files/imagecache/myimage.jpg isn't already an existing image file. I believe I can do that using: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f ...right? It's just the first part that I can't figure out.

  • App.config connection string Protection error

    - by MikeScott8
    I am running into an issue I had before; can't find my reference on how to solve it. Here is the issue. We encrypt the connection strings section in the app.config for our client application using code below: config = ConfigurationManager.OpenExeConfiguration(ConfigurationUserLevel.None) If config.ConnectionStrings.SectionInformation.IsProtected = False Then config.ConnectionStrings.SectionInformation.ProtectSection(Nothing) ' We must save the changes to the configuration file.' config.Save(ConfigurationSaveMode.Modified, True) End If The issue is we had a salesperson leave. The old laptop is going to a new salesperson and under the new user's login, when it tries to to do this we get an error. The error is: Unhandled Exception: System.Configuration.ConfigurationErrorsException: An error occurred executing the configuration section handler for connectionStrings. ---> System.Configuration.ConfigurationErrorsException: Failed to encrypt the section 'connectionStrings' using provider 'RsaProtectedConfigurationProvider'. Error message from the provider: Object already exists. ---> System.Security.Cryptography.CryptographicException: Object already exists

  • Convert IP address string to binary in Python

    - by pizzim13
    As part of a larger application, I am trying to convert an IP address to binary. Purpose being to later calculate the broadcast address for Wake on LAN traffic. I am assuming that there is a much more efficient way to do this then the way I am thinking. Which is breaking up the IP address by octet, adding 0's to the beginning of each octet where necessary, converting each octet to binary, then combining the results. Should I be looking at netaddr, sockets, or something completely different? Example: From 192.168.1.1 to 11000000.10101000.00000001.00000001
