• Stop YouTube Videos from Automatically Playing in Chrome

  If you’ve actually used the internet before, you’ve probably come across a page with an auto-playing YouTube clip, and chances are good it was a rather annoying one. Here’s how to stop them from starting automatically in Chrome. We’ve already told you how to stop them from automatically playing if you’re a Firefox user (best answer: use Flashblock!), but now it’s time for Chrome users to get their turn. Use the Stop Autoplay for YouTube Extension The great thing about this extension is that it stops the video from playing, but it allows it to continue buffering, so when you do feel like playing the video, it’ll already be downloaded—really useful for people with slower internet connections. There’s no UI or anything fancy, just head to the extension page and click the Install button. If you want to get rid of it later, use the Tools –> Extensions menu (or you can type chrome://extensions/ into your address bar), and then click the Uninstall link for that add-on.   Download Stop Autoplay for YouTube [Google Chrome Extensions] Using FlashBlock for Chrome If you really wanted to, you could just disable Flash across the board using FlashBlock for Chrome. Once you’ve installed the extension, you won’t see any Flash elements anywhere, and you’ll have to move your mouse over them and click to enable them each time. When I installed the extension the first time, I noticed that YouTube was already in the allow list. I’m not sure if that’s the default setting or not, but you can use the icon in the address bar, or the Options from the Extensions panel to get to the settings page, and from there you can remove anything from the White List that you wouldn’t want. Another nice feature about Flash Block is that it can also block Silverlight, or you could simply uninstall or remove unnecessary Chrome plug-ins. • set installer background / not able to run early_command in custom preseed file (precise)

  I have a custom preseed file for a Precise Live CD (which is well loaded on boot, I checked syslog for that). My initial problem is that when booting in install mode (default behavior for a Live CD), ubiquity runs X with a default wallpaper which is hardcoded to /usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-ubuntu.png in Ubiquity code. So my idea was to run early_command (https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/installation-guide/i386/preseed-advanced.html) to copy my custom wallpaper over /usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-ubuntu.png. Assuming my custom wallpaper allready resides on the rootfs in /usr/share/backgrounds. But... It seems the early_command never runs (and I'm sure the preseed file is taken into account) Here is what I have added to my preseed file: d-i preseed/early_command string cp /usr/share/backgrounds/mywallpaper-defaults.jpg /usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-ubuntu.png Even this one is never run: d-i preseed/early_command string /usr/bin/touch /tmp/testearly Thanks for helping !!

• Availability Best Practices on Oracle VM Server for SPARC

  This is the first of a series of blog posts on configuring Oracle VM Server for SPARC (also called Logical Domains) for availability. This series will show how to how to plan for availability, improve serviceability, avoid single points of failure, and provide resiliency against hardware and software failures. Availability is a broad topic that has filled entire books, so these posts will focus on aspects specifically related to Oracle VM Server for SPARC. The goal is to improve Reliability, Availability and Serviceability (RAS): An article defining RAS can be found here. Oracle VM Server for SPARC Principles for Availability Let's state some guiding principles for availability that apply to Oracle VM Server for SPARC: Avoid Single Points Of Failure (SPOFs). Systems should be configured so a component failure does not result in a loss of application service. The general method to avoid SPOFs is to provide redundancy so service can continue without interruption if a component fails. For a critical application there may be multiple levels of redundancy so multiple failures can be tolerated. Oracle VM Server for SPARC makes it possible to configure systems that avoid SPOFs. Configure for availability at a level of resource and effort consistent with business needs. Effort and resource should be consistent with business requirements. Production has different availability requirements than test/development, so it's worth expending resources to provide higher availability. Even within the category of production there may be different levels of criticality, outage tolerances, recovery and repair time requirements. Keep in mind that a simple design may be more understandable and effective than a complex design that attempts to "do everything". Design for availability at the appropriate tier or level of the platform stack. Availability can be provided in the application, in the database, or in the virtualization, hardware and network layers they depend on - or using a combination of all of them. It may not be necessary to engineer resilient virtualization for stateless web applications applications where availability is provided by a network load balancer, or for enterprise applications like Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) and WebLogic that provide their own resiliency. It's (often) the same architecture whether virtual or not: For example, providing resiliency against a lost device path or failing disk media is done for the same reasons and may use the same design whether in a domain or not. It's (often) the same technique whether using domains or not: Many configuration steps are the same. For example, configuring IPMP or creating a redundant ZFS pool is pretty much the same within the guest whether you're in a guest domain or not. There are configuration steps and choices for provisioning the guest with the virtual network and disk devices, which we will discuss. Sometimes it is different using domains: There are new resources to configure. Most notable is the use of alternate service domains, which provides resiliency in case of a domain failure, and also permits improved serviceability via "rolling upgrades". This is an important differentiator between Oracle VM Server for SPARC and traditional virtual machine environments where all virtual I/O is provided by a monolithic infrastructure that itself is a SPOF. Alternate service domains are widely used to provide resiliency in production logical domains environments. Some things are done via logical domains commands, and some are done in the guest: For example, with Oracle VM Server for SPARC we provide multiple network connections to the guest, and then configure network resiliency in the guest via IP Multi Pathing (IPMP) - essentially the same as for non-virtual systems. On the other hand, we configure virtual disk availability in the virtualization layer, and the guest sees an already-resilient disk without being aware of the details. These blogs will discuss configuration details like this. Live migration is not "high availability" in the sense of "continuous availability": If the server is down, then you don't live migrate from it! (A cluster or VM restart elsewhere would be used). However, live migration can be part of the RAS (Reliability, Availability, Serviceability) picture by improving Serviceability - you can move running domains off of a box before planned service or maintenance. Topics Here are some of the topics that will be covered: Network availability using IP Multipathing and aggregates Disk path availability using virtual disks defined with multipath groups ("mpgroup") Disk media resiliency configuring for redundant disks that can tolerate media loss Multiple service domains - this is probably the most significant item and the one most specific to Oracle VM Server for SPARC. It is very widely deployed in production environments as the means to provide network and disk availability, but it can be confusing. Subsequent articles will describe why and how to configure multiple service domains. Note, for the sake of precision: an I/O domain is any domain that has a physical I/O resource (such as a PCIe bus root complex). A service domain is a domain providing virtual device services to other domains; it is almost always an I/O domain too (so it can have something to serve).   I am trying to add some visual effects to some entities, meshes, or whatever you want to call them as they are looking pretty dull in my game right now. Also I would like to know what is the best way to add effects like the one in the video to my game (for example, thunder effects, shattering, etc.) I know that I can do some things with shaders, but I haven't learned them too well and I am still in a beginner level. • Settings xorg.conf to be used with VESA driver?

  I have an brand new installation of Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic version) where everything is fine except the video resolution. In Ubuntu 9.10, the file xorg.conf is empty by default. I'm using an onboard video card, and Ubuntu can not find the right resolution for me. It always uses 800x600, but I need at least 1024x768. Also, my monitor is listed as Unknown Type. Ubuntu did find the right resolution when I changed the monitor to a Samsung monitor. By the way what are the generic settings to put inside xorg.conf? What is the settings for Refresh Rate, for example, I got a resolution of 1280x800, but the Refresh Rate generally between 60 ~ 80 htz is ZERO on my resolution.. In 1024 resolution my Refresh Rate is 75 htz.. What is going on with my resolution and how to modify the Refresh Rate?? Many Thanks!

• HDMI port not recognized on Sony Vaio

  I am running Ubuntu 11.10 64bit with a Sony VAIO VPC F11. It has an NVIDIA GeForce 310M video card, with the latest Nvidia drivers for the 64 bit linux, and a Windows partition with Win7 64bit. NVIDIA driver version is NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-280.13 External monitor is Samsung SyncMaster P2770 If I boot into the Windows partition, the HDMI works as expected, with sound and video-- under linux, the HDMI port is not recognized at all, apparently, and provides no signal to the attached monitor. The nividia-settings tool does not recognize any monitor connected to the HDMI port. Disper is installed and cannot recognize an attached external monitor. Can anyone help me diagnose this issue and fix it if possible? The laptop has only the one HDMI port to connect any external monitor, so it I can't get this working I'm stuck using either the laptop screen or Windows. Thanks

• Thunar not showing thumbnails in Openbox

  I am using openbox 3.5 and my file manager of choice is Thunar but the problem I am facing is thunar not showing thumbnails for folder,video files etc. My Thunar: You can see in the above image that thunar is not showing thumbnails for folders, files but it is showing for pdf and similar is the case for video files no thumbnails. So, what is wrong here am I missing some basic thunar config files. ranrag@ranrag:~$ echo $DESKTOP_SESSION openbox I looked into some forums and they mentioned that there is some dependency of tumbler with thunar but I have latest version of tumbler installed on my system. PS: I already tried thunar preferences but still no luck.

• Grub bootloader goes fail to boot in dual boot system after installing Ubuntu 12.10

  I had 12.04 with my dual boot system. Yesterday I downloaded Ubuntu 12.10 make bootable USB and choose Upgrade option in Installer. After installation Grub failed to boot my machine. I tried following to fix grub bootloder . Same problem I fixed with Ubuntu 12.04 using live USB but this solution not work for Ubuntu 12.10. Now coming at exactly where this solution goes fail. I followed this steps after booting Live USB and opening terminal. 1) sudo fdisk -l to see where Linux is installed 2) sudo mount /dev/sda9 /mnt where sda9 is my linux partition 3) sudo mount /dev/sda9 /mnt/boot 4) sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev 5) sudo chroot /mnt (No problems with this steps done perfectly) 6) grub-install /dev/sda when I type command I got error that source_dir doesn't exist Please specify --target or --directory How can I solve this ?

• How to publish paid Android apps if you're not from US/UK

  I was pretty excited while creating one of my apps but as it turns out you can't actually sign up for Google Checkout if you don't live either in the USA or in the UK. And since Google Checkout is the only way Android Market will pay you, all my efforts seem to be going in vain. So because I live in India, I can't sell my apps. I tried contacting Google by various means on this, but haven't got any response so far. I tried searching the web as well just to find out that one can't be paid via any other way. I am pretty sure that many people here might have gone through the same problem. How did you solve it? I have a PayPal account and an AdSense account as well. Can they help in any way? And if nothing works out, how am I supposed to be selling my app?

• Handbrake-powered VidCoder gets a native 64-bit version

  A while back, VidCoder -- the Windows video disc ripping program -- added support for Blu-ray discs. With Handbrake's engine under the hood, VidCoder offers an easy-to-use interface and simple batch processing of your video files. With the release of version 0.8, there's also now a native 64-bit version for those of you running Windows x64. A number of stability tweaks have also been introduced. As Baz pointed out in our comments last time, VidCoder is particular useful on netbooks. If you've got a 1024x600 screen, Handbrake may not even launch for you -- but VidCoder will fire up just fine.
