• Java multi-threading - what is the best way to monitor the activity of a number of threads?

  I have a number of threads that are performing a long runing task. These threads themselves have child threads that do further subdivisions of work. What is the best way for me to track the following: How many total threads my process has created What the state of each thread currently is What part of my process each thread has currently got to I want to do it in as efficient a way as possible and once threads finish, I don't want any references to them hanging around becasuse I need to be freeing up memory as early as possible. Any advice?

  My Delphi program relies heavily on Outlook automation. Outlook versions prior to 2007-SP2 tend to get stuck in memory due to badly written addins and badly written Outlook code. If Outlook is stuck, calling CreateOleObject('Outlook.Application') or GetActiveObject ... doesn't return and keeps my application hanging till Outlook.exe is closed in the task manager. I've thought of a solution, but I'm unsure whether it's good practice or not. I'd start Outlook with CreateOleObject in a separate thread, wait 10 seconds in my main thread and if Outlook hangs (CreateOleObject doesn't return), offer the user to kill the Outlook.exe process from my program. But since I don't want to force the user to kill the Outlook.exe process, as an alternative I also need a way to kill the new thread in my program which keeps hanging now. Is this good practice? How can I terminate a hanging thread in Delphi without leaking memory?

  I am new to Microsoft Detours. I have installed it to trace the system calls a process makes. I run the following commands which I got from the web syelogd.exe /q C:\Users\xxx\Desktop\log.txt withdll.exe /d:traceapi.dll C:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk\googletalk.exe I get the log file. The problem is I don't fully understand what is happening here. How does detours work? How does it trace the system calls? Also I don't know how to read the output in log.txt. Here is one line in log.txt 20101221060413329 2912 50.60: traceapi: 001 GetCurrentThreadId() Finally I want to get the stack trace of the process. How can I get that?

  Is there anyway to disallow publishing Debug builds when publishing ClickOnce aplications using Visual Studio 2008? I know this was asked before, but i can't figure out how from the answer. THe Accepted answer for previous question was: One thing you can do is add a condition to the .csproj or .vbproj file that MSBuild will check when doing a build. The condition would check if a publish is occurring and check if the build is a debug build, then do something like run an external tool or otherwise interrupt the build process or cause it to fail. Could anyone elaborate on that answer or tell me where/or how I can add this condition. • Powershell call web service on new email event (Exchange 2010)

  I have Exchange 2010 and I need to run a process using web services against every new email to come in to a mailbox. The process will basically add the email to an internal task list. Can I use Powershell for this? Having never used Powershell before I don't really have a clue on it's capabilities. If not can anyone suggest another way of doing this other than monitoring the mailbox every X seconds. Really I'd like it event based so if no new mail then no processing. Cheers, Mike

• dvi generation: no bounding box

  Hi, I wrote a research paper in latex and generated pdf using kile. It worked perfectly well. Now conference people are asking for dvi file also. But Kile's quick build process does not give a dvi file, but its 'Latex' compile process does. So I tried to compile the document, and it gave errors for includegraphics saying figure not found. When I append the correct extensions to the image names, that errors stopped coming but new errors came "bounding box is missing". I added bounding box values and now DVI file is being generated. My questions are: I have tried giving very high and low bounding box values but there is no deformation in the PDF. Why? Can I generate a DVI without giving bounding box values?   I'm planning on building an application where audio media is going to be streamed to the mobile phone for the user to listen. The targets are smartphones: iPhone/Blackberry/Android/(J2ME ?). I see that streaming on iPhone has to be done with HTTP Live streaming, but I don't see it supported by other platforms. Should I broadcast the streams via rstp ? http ? Is there any way to use a unified solution for all the different mobile platform ? If anyone already had to go through this, help would be gratly appreciated.

• Port 80 is being used by SYSTEM (PID 4), what is that?

  I am trying to use port 80 for my application server, but when I perform "netstat -aon" I get TCP 0.0.0.0:80 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING 4 When I look up the process in task manager, it shows PID 4 is SYSTEM, thats it, not extension... nothing, just "SYSTEM". Whats going on here? I'm afraid to end this process, what do I do? UPDATE: I've solved this through a stackoverflow question.   Hello, I created a powershell object via .net to invoke commands. When I invoke normal commands like 'Get-Process' I had no problems: ps.AddCommand("Get-Process").AddParameter(...).Invoke() but I'm not able to invoke a .net method with the syntax "[namespace.class]::method", just to make an example to invoke [System.IO.File]::Exists("c:\boo.txt"). I tried with ps.AddCommand("[System.IO.File]::Exists(\"c:\boo.txt\")").Invoke() ps.AddCommand("[System.IO.File]::Exists").AddArgument("c:\boo.txt\").Invoke() and some others. It always throws an exception which says that the command specified is not recognized. There is a way to invoke that type of command? Thanks

• c# - pull records from database without timeout

  Hi folks, i have a sql query with multiple joins & it pulls data from a database for processing. This is supposed to be running on some scheduled basis. So day 1, it might pull 500, day 2 say 400. Now, if the service is stopped for some reason & the data not processed, then on day3 there could be as much as 1000 records to process. This is causing timeout on the sql query. How best to handle this situation without causing timeout & gradually reducing workload to process? TIA

  I work for a small E-Commerce shop and we are looking for a process that will handle resizing our product images dynamically. Currently our designers take high resolution photos, either provided by the manufactures or created in house, and alter them to fit various pages on our site. The designers are constantly resizing, cropping, altering compression levels, etc., of each product photo to fit the needs of the business. Being that our product line is updated frequently, this becomes a monotonous task. Abobe Scene7 does exactly what we are looking to do and the images are served up from a CDN. Unfortunately we found it to be too expensive. I'm curious to learn how others handle this process at their organizations. Does anyone know of any good 3rd party tools or other SAAS providers that can handle performing some basic image manipulation and serving them on the fly?

• One click login to my google apps solution how can I do it?

  Hi guys I'm developing a google apps solution and I'm building on the tutorial application give by google at http://code.google.com/googleapps/marketplace/tutorial_php.html - the thing is that the example given sets up the application such that the user has to enter in manually the email address or username and then it takes the user through an authentication process whereby it asks the user if they wish to allow the application to be given access to the services mentioned in the manifest.xml file. Isn't there a better way to do this I mean like I want that when the user upon logging into his google apps account just has to click in the application link installed and straight on should be able to enter the application. Can't the process of authentication and all be transparent in the backdrop. I need help on this asap. Thanks a bunch!

• Re processing emails on error from pop3 account

  Hi! I have an application that read emails from a pop3 account. When I connect to the account I download all new emails and process body and attachments. If there is an error processing one of the emails I would like to download it again next time I connect to the account but since I only get new emails and the failed one was already downloaded I don't get it so I can try to process it again. I can do it this with any pop3 command or I have to store locally failed emails?

  HI I have to implement login over SSL in my website. for example cloginForm - this is the form https://www.myweb.com/loginProcess - this is the action which process the form -authenticates user. I am able to do this with usual web form but the problem is the overlay dialog box for login for example if I am on my website home page http://www.myweb.com - notice http and I click a login link there , it shows a small html div with login form (like a litebox).now ,as I am on a non SSL page (http) the data which I post does not get encrypted,and posted to the process action. Everything works fine with windows authentication but when I change the authentication to form based the login process get fails. • Use of LOC to determine project size

  How many lines of code (LOC) does it take to be considered a large project? How about for just one person writing it? I know this metric is questionable, but there is a significant difference, for a single developer, between 1k and 10k LOC. I typically use space for readability, especially for SQL statements, and I try to reduce the amount of LOC for maintenance purpose to follow as many best practice as i can. For example, I created a unified diff of the code I modified today, and it was over 1k LOC (including comments and blank lines). Is "modified LOC" a better metric? I have ~2k LOC, so it's surprising I modified 1k. I guess rewriting counts as both a deletion and addition which doubles the stats.
