• Need help. HDD Failed

  i have a seagate 3.5" 500GB SATA2 HDD that i put in a USB case (vantec) that failed recently. symptoms: at first, it started except that attempts made to browse certain folders resulted in "Data Error (Cyclic Redundancy Check)". then when i tried restarting the hdd, then i got a RAW partition, and windows 7 said i need to format it. i also tried using a desktop to connect to the HDD directly using SATA, windows 7 stuck at "starting windows" for abt half hour b4 i gave up on it. in the BIOS, it seems to detect the HDD model correctly, something like STA3500xxx something like that i also tried using TestDisk as suggested by jaclaz on MSFN and it did not find any partitions what could i do now?

We have a legacy system which does the same functionality and we get in to proxy configuration related issues frequently.It uses the settings from internet explorer network settings. Most of the time these are due to specific proxy configuration( Eg: Proxy auto-config etc ). I am trying to understand the various scenarios used in corporate environments for proxy configurations. • prevent OS X from prompting disk initialization/formatting

  i have TrueCrypt partition, when i insert it in OS X, it always prompt me to initialize the hard disk. is there a way to prevent os x from detecting uninitialize hard disk? [UPDATE] by the way, as Truecrypt suggested while i'm in Windows, i must make partitions so the os won't detect the hard drive as uninitialized. Windows respected that the drive already have contents by the mere fact that it has partitions, while OS X thinks that it is still uninitialized. i think OS X is trying to be smart by detecting if each partition has a valid filesystem id/marker

• Reinstalling a fresh Windows 8 on my new laptop

  OK I have a new Dell (Inspiron 15R 5520) laptop that came with Windows 8 pre-installed. I'm really not a fan of pre-installed Windows since they are bundled with tons of softwares I don't want and settings I don't like. I would like to reinstall it myself with a fresh installation. I have bought Windows 8 Pro OEM already for my desktop computer and it came with the usual OEM sticker with the Windows serial on it. Now my new laptop only have a Windows 8 logo sticker on it with no serial on it. After some research it seems it's normal. Now, can I format my laptop and install Windows 8 (not pro) from my Windows 8 Pro OEM DVD? I ask because when I installed Windows 8 Pro it asked for the serial (which was found on the sticker). I'm wondering if the same DVD will detect the serial on the BIOS of my new laptop or I need a special Dell DVD for that?

• Firefox's searchbox clears as I type

  About 30% of the time, when I click on the searchbox and type in a query, it clears everything I typed half way through. For example, if I type "super user", it will clear at "super " so all I see is "user". It seems like something is stuck, but I'm not sure what. It doesn't always happen, but it seems that the auto-suggestions feature is also broken..it never works. I'm using Ubuntu 10.4. Any ideas on what could be wrong? • Does this sound like a stack overflow?

  I think I might be having a stack overflow problem or something similar in my embedded firmware code. I am a new programmer and have never dealt with a SO so I'm not sure if that is what's happening or not. The firmware controls a device with a wheel that has magnets evenly spaced around it and the board has a hall effect sensor that senses when magnet is over it. My firmware operates the stepper and also count steps while monitoring the magnet sensor in order to detect if the wheel has stalled. I am using a timer interrupt on my chip (8 bit, 8057 acrh.) to set output ports to control the motor and for the stall detection. The stall detection code looks like this... // Enter ISR // Change the ports to the appropriate value for the next step // ... PosSensor is the magnet sensor. MagnetSize is the number of stepper steps that it takes to get through the magnet field. GapSize is the number of steps between two magnets. So I want to detect if the wheel gets stuck either with the sensor over a magnet or not over a magnet. This works great for a long time but then after a while the first stall event will occur because 'StallDetector (MagnetSize + 10)' but when I look at the value of StallDetector it is always around 220! This doesn't make sense because MagnetSize is always around 35. So the stall event should have been triggered at like 46 but somehow it got all the way up to 220? And I don't set the value of stall detector anywhere else in my code. Do you have any advice on how I can track down the root of this problem? • Why is my USB-to-VGA'd monitor working, but not showing in Display Settings?

  I have a USB-to-VGA adapter, which I use to connect a second monitor to my laptop (totaling 3 screens). It worked alright with Vista. I upgraded to Windows 7, and now it no longer works properly (I downloaded the latest drivers just to get it to work on 7). The extra monitor is detected and used to extend the desktop (I can move things onto it, etc), but is not shown within the Control Panel. This is annoying because now I can't changes its resolution, set its logical position to match its physical position, etc. Can I do anything, besides waiting for better drivers? I'm mainly concerned with moving its logical position. (I'd also like to understand how Windows can use a monitor it can't detect. Weird.)

  Our IT environment provides 10 shared, Microsoft Windows 7 laptops for an office staff of several hundred people. After checking-out and logging into a laptop with an Active Directory domain account, office staff frequently run Microsoft Outlook 2010. However, the first time office staff do this, Microsoft Outlook 2010 prompts the user to create and configure their local account. This takes just several clicks, as Microsoft Outlook 2010 auto-detects the office staff member's Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 (SP3) account. The problem is: all office staff have to do this on each new laptop they use. Until they do so, some functionality does not work (for example, Microsoft Word 2010 Save & Send fails with error "There was a problem creating the message"). How might our IT department "pre-configure" the shared laptops so office staff can simply log-in and use Microsoft Outlook 2010 functionality without the need to configure a local account?

• Options for PCI-DSS on AWS - file integrity monitoring and intrusion detection

  I need to deploy some file integrity monitoring and intrusion detections software on AWS instances. I really wanted to use OSSEC, however it does not work well in an environment where servers can auto deploy and shut down based on load, because it requires server managed keys to be generated. Including the agent in the AMI will not allow monitoring as soon as it comes up because of that. There are many options out there, and several are listed in other posts on this site, however none that I've seen so far deal with the unique problems inherent in AWS or cloud based deployments in general. Can anyone point me at some products, preferably open source, that we might use to cover those portions of PCI DSS that require this software? Has anyone else achieved this on AWS?

• Restrict a port to a single app

  I'd like to restrict a range of udp ports to a single application (or a user). What I'd like to achieve is not simply blocking a bind() from other uids, but also remove the range from a pool that can be auto-assigned. For example, if someone tries to explicitly bind 12345, but doesn't run the specified app, they should get EPERM. If someone tries to bind an unspecified port, they should never try to bind 12345 at random. Is there any system that can help here? I tried browsing apparmor / selinux docs, but they seem to do the blocking part only.

• Patriot-2 RAM on ASUS PK5-E not running at PC2-8500?

  I have a P5K-E Motherboard and recently upgraded to 8GB of RAM (4 2GB sticks of PC2-8500 1066 MHz - Patriot Viper 2). When looking at the RAM with PC Wizard 2010 it's showing the RAM being recognized PC2-6500. I've read elsewhere that this is a common problem and requires manually changing the DRAM Voltage in BIOS to 2.2. I've done this and I'm still getting it recognized as PC2-6500. (I also manually set the FSB speed to 1066MHz instead of the AUTO). Any ideas on how to get this memory working properly? Thanks in advance!

• Vertical alignment problem in textbox in Microsoft Word 2007

  I pardon as its not a programming question at all. But if anybody can answer this it will be usefull for me. In MS word 2007 I drew a textbox and entered some text. Then I right clicked on textbox and went to format shape Then went to TextBox tab and reduced the top internal margin to 0.1 cm. But still it seems there is too much space at the top inside the textbox. I am not able to position the text exactly at the vertical middle of textbox. If I choose the auto-rezide option in format Shape, the textBox size is increases automatically but the text remains exactly at vertical and horizontal middle of textbox. but anyhow I need the textbox to be small. This is very minor but annoying problem. Can anybody help?

• RGB to DVI adapter not working for Projector-to-PC

  We have a wall-mounted projector (dell 4320) with VGA In and the other end of the cable is RGB. We have an RGB to DVI-I adapter (w/ DIP switches) inorder to plug the cable into a PC (video card has 1 VGA and 1 DVI-I port). We had no problems until recently, when the PCs hard drive crashed. After re-imaging the PC, the computer no longer "sees" the projector (the computer doesn't detect the projector as a second monitor anymore). The PC is an older Dell with an after-market video card and runs win XP. I also tried it on a new HP box (win 7), but had to add a DVI-I to DVI-D adapter. Any ideas?

• How to stop ethernet interface in bridge configuration from obtaining IP address via DHCP

  Hi! I'm trying to configure openvpn in bridging configuration. First step of doing this requires creating bridge interface (br0), bridging together physical ethernet interface (eth0) and logical tap0 interface. This can be done with simple script but I want to use less popular approach, configuring bridge interface entirely via /etc/network/interfaces file (on Debian linux). So I have removed all eth0 definitions form /etc/network/interfaces and replaced if with following br0 definition: auto br0 iface br0 inet static pre-up openvpn --mktun --dev tap0 address 10.0.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 bridge_ports eth0 tap0 post-down openvpn --rmtun --dev tap0 This works as I expected, but there is only one problem: interface eth0 is part of bridge interface br0 AND it also receive it's own IP address from my DHCP server (located on same LAN where eth0 is connected). My questions is: how to stop eth0 interface from obtaining it's own IP address? (It should only be part of br0 bridge).

• Why do partially failed/failing switches fail to pass DHCP?

  I've noticed this several times: a switch starts to behave oddly. Usually if the switch doesn't fail outright, what tends to get noticed is that DHCP doesn't work. We had a Linksys SRW-224P fail today. Systems which were still connected worked properly, until it came time to renew their DHCP lease. Once the lease expired, they stopped working, but up until then we couldn't detect a failure. This includes PoE VoIP phones -- they work fine until their lease is up, at which point they're done. I've noticed this on the above-mentioned Linksys, three varieties of 3Com, and possibly half a dozen dumb switches. What is it about DHCP that makes it sensitive to failing switches?

• Cisco 877 as PPPoA/PPPoE bridge (no routing) - how to make it listen to IP for management?

  I have a Cisco 877 configured to bridge ADSL with PPPoA to PPPoE on Vlan1. This works fine, but in this mode the only way I can configure the Cisco is via the serial console. I'd like to have the Cisco also listen on an IP address so I can telnet/ssh into it. I think the right way to go about this would be via bridge irb, but I'm not sure exactly how (or if that's even the right direction). IOS is 12.4T and my current config (cut down to essentials) is: no ip routing no ip cef ! ! interface ATM0 no ip address no ip route-cache no atm ilmi-keepalive pvc 0/38 encapsulation aal5snap ! dsl operating-mode auto bridge-group 1 ! ! interface Vlan1 no ip address no ip route-cache bridge-group 1 Just setting an IP address on Vlan1 didn't have the desired effect, but surely this must be possible somehow (the Draytek Vigor 120 even does it by default).

• Explorer hijacked by a trojan

  I managed to catch a newish trojan that my Anti virus program wasn't able to detect. I'm usually not that bad at technical stuff regarding computers but I really don't know what to do with this one anymore. The trojan somehow managed to get my Windows to recover it every time I try to remove it by deleting it's exe (called some weird name located in Programs "asdza/saddasn.exe" (example only)). It also sets an entry in my autostart. It starts a second explorer.exe and tries to connect to some server obviously trying to steal data. (glad I still have my firewall) How can I get rid of this trojan, I really need help. It is new and probably unrecognized by all major virus scanners.

• Dedicated Mouse and Keyboard on VirtualBox VM

  Currently I am trying to run VirtualBox on my second monitor, with a dedicated mouse and keyboard. However, doing so has not proven easy. There has been times where the mouse works, but not the keyboard, vice versa, or nothing works at all. The biggest problem I am running into is this: When enabling the USB mouse and keyboard from the VM, I get an error: 'USB Device is busy with a previous request.' The only thing that is using second mouse and keyboard, however, is Windows. The other error I have received stated that the VM was unable to create a proxy for the device. Additionally, the VM occasionally will disable the secondary keyboard entirely, requiring me to unplug and replug it into my PC to re-enable it again. Keyboard auto-capture is disabled, and while a solution I was reading online stated to turn off mouse integration, that option is grayed out on my machine.

• Installing SSL certs with nginx on Amazon EC2

  I finally got a cert from an authority and am struggling to get things working. I've created the appropriate combined certificate (personal + intermediate + root) and nginx is pointing to it. I got an elastic IP and connected it to my EC2 instance. My DNS records point to that IP. But when I point the browser to the hostname, I get the standard "Connection Untrusted" bit, with ssl_error_bad_cert_domain. Port 443 is open - I can get to the site over https if I ignore the warning. Weird thing is, under technical details, it lists the domain I tried to access as valid! When I try and diagnose with ssl testing sites, they don't even detect a certificate! What am I missing here? domain is yanlj.coinculture.info. Note I've got coinculture.info running on a home server without a dedicated IP and have the same problem, but I'll be moving that to the same EC2 instance as soon as I figure this thing out. I thought the elastic IP would solve things but it hasn't

• How to create a template with contact info in Windows Live Mail?

  Is it possible to create a template to use in Windows Live mail which I can load peoples details into from my contact list? I currently send emails to people but I have to manually view them in the address book, then copy there details into an email. What I would like is to open the template, select the email address and everything else is auto completed, such as first name, address etc. These would go in set fields which I set within the template. Is this possible? I am willing to switch to another mail account if needed but I would prefer it to be in Windows Live Mail. Thank you. :)

  I work on a project for which I use an Ubuntu server vm on an Ubuntu host. The VM runs all the services / webapps through haproxy and nginx and serves it on the domain (xyz.com). I manually modify my resolv.conf to use the VMs IP address as the nameserver and I can run my app on the host browser. The problem is I am modifying an auto-generated file (resolv.conf) and I need to do it each time. Is there a smart way to say: -- are you accessing xyz.com? -- if yes use VM's DNS server, else use the hosts

• Upgrading Active Directory from 2000 to 2008

  Our config is currently: 1 Windows 2000 domain controller running ISA2000, dhcp, dns 1 Windows 2003 domain controller as main file server, prob cert server as well, dhcp, dns 1 Windows 2008/Exchange2010 domain controller as Exchange server, DHCP,DNS Currently getting FRS errors on files server journalwrap error Currently getting FRS errors on othe DC's can't replicate from above Exchange DC holds Schema, rid,pdc, and infastructure roles File Server holds Domain namaing operation master role WOW, I didn't set this up, just inherited it. Am I right to assume that fixing the FRS errors is #1, what do I need to do for that? set enable journalwrap auto restore in registry? Demote W2000 domain controller, should that have any implications for ISA? We have Forefront to be deployed but that's another day Transfer Domain Nameing Role to Exchange server (I know or think having an Exchange server as DC isn't best practive) We will be getting another server W2008 to replace current file server and I thought it could takeover all roles once deployed Demote W2k3 file server and then raise functional domain level to 2008 Am I missing anything other that the sense to walk away?
