• Most effective server side programming language for web development?

  This is more a question of pros/cons between PHP and JAVA. Iv been doing research, and iv narrowed it down to those two. And in consideration, id like to go into mobile app dev...So thats +1 for Java. Time taken to learn the language is not an issue...Just would like to know which is the most profitable at the end of all the training. And on a slight note. Can Javascript work with Java? And what is the real advantage of that?

• SQL Not Exists in this Query - is it possible

  This is my script - it simply looks for the image file associated to a person record. Now the error will display if there is NO .jpg evident when the query runs. Msg 4860, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot bulk load. The file "C:\Dev\ClientServices\Defence\RAN\Shore\Config\Photos\002054.2009469432270600.001.jpg" does not exist. Is there a way to write this query to 'IF not exists then set id_number = '002054.2009469432270427.001' - so it wil always display this photo for any records without a picture. • Can I configure Eclipse / JBoss integration so it does not rely on deploying Jars to the "server/def

  I am using MyEclipse 7.5 with JBoss 4.2.3 GA. When I define my local development JBoss server in MyEclipse it always wants to deploy jars, wars etc. to the "server/default/deploy" directory. Unfortunately our JBoss directory structure for production is "server/XYZ/deploy/abc" (driven by a third party). As a result our Dev JBoss instances are different from our QA/Staging/Production JBoss instances. Is there a way to configure Eclipse to use JBoss but deploy to that specific folder path "server/XYZ/deploy/abc" rather than the default one "server/default/deploy"?

  Back in the ASP classic days when i needed to write out the name/value pairs of forms submitted by POST i thru this loop into the page: on error resume next for each x in Request.Form Response.AppendToLog x & "=" & Request(x) next It threw all the form fields and values into the log just as GETs are. Does IIS7 .net give me any better method? (this is for the dev/testing portion of the project i don't have any concern about the space or cycles used to accomplish this). thx

• Custom configuration file custom_config.js not working?

  Hello gals/guys, I am trying to use a custom configuration file instead of the default config.js file in the ckeditor root. I have placed a renamed copy of the config.js file in my webroot and call it with customConfig. It is not working for me though. Is my syntax creating any issues? • PHP code in drupal pages treating > as ?>

  While working on an existing Drupal site I've noticed a strange glitch that causes any PHP operator with in it to act like a ? tag. This is happening in in Drupal pages that I create that have a 'Input Format' of 'PHP code'. For example this line of code foreach($array as $key = $value){ results in a very broken page that prints out $value){ Does any one know what could be causing this? My Dev environment is XAMPP. Drupal version is 6.15. PHP version is 5.2.9.

I follow the instructions provided here but my browser does not prompt a "Save As" dialog. I cannot figure out what is wrong with my function. • .NET assembly in GAC + Config

  I have a .NET 3.5 assembly, a DAL, that connects to a database through Linq2SQL. I deploy this assembly in the GAC as it can be used by multiple business layers. The question is: in a dev environment I have a connection string different than the one in the production environment. Before deploying the assembly to the prod GAC I need to recompile it with the appropriate connection string. Is there any way to allow deploying the assembly to the GAC independently of the connection string, being that info read from some config? Thx in advance

  What is the simplest/best way to ensure only 1 copy of given script is running - assuming it's bash on linux? At the moment I'm doing: ps -C script.name.sh > /dev/null 2>&1 || ./script.name.sh but it has several issues: it puts the check outside of script it doesn't let me run the same script from separate accounts - which I would like sometimes. -C checks only first 14 characters of process name Of course I can write my own pidfile handling, but I sense that there should be some simple way to do it.

• android: ListView.setAdapter() is causing IllegalStateException. Not sure how to fix it.

  I'm trying to populate a listview with the contents of various ListAdapters based upon the results of a switch statement nested in an OnItemClickListener. When clicking the item, the application was force closing, so I ran it through the dev tools and android debugger. Eclipse is showing me the in the main thread that the application has suspended due an IllegalStateException. I have a marginal understanding of what the particular exception indicates, but not sure how to fix it, or what in my code is causing it to be thrown. • Need a Javascript Expert, IE slow script

  I have a jQuery plugin running on my site that is executing very, very slowly in IE7/8 to the point that it throws a slow script warning to the user. It doesn't happen in any other browser, and I can't figure out what might be going on. If you go to this page: http://dev.xeetic.org/projects You'll see that there are 16 results on each page, and each one has a "flip" behavior attached, using the jQuery plugin "quickflip." Attaching this behavior is very slow in IE. If I reduce the result set to 8 or 4 per page, it's faster, but still very bogged down. I have contacted the author of the script with no success. I am willing to pay for a solution, if I'm allowed to offer such a thing on this site. Very desperate. Please help!

• POST Ajax call results in not found using jqGrid and ASP.NET MVC 2 on IIS6

  This is puzzling me. I deployed an MVC 2 application to IIS6 and everything works fine except for my jqGrid calls to get data. All is well on my development machine, but here are the two URLs I'm working with Local dev web server: POST http://localhost:port/Ctrl.mvc/JsonMethod IIS6 (notice https - not sure if that matters) POST https://www.domain.com/AppName/Ctrl.mvc/JsonMethod The latter URL results in a HTTP 404, which is really confusing as all works well on my local machine. The JsonMethod is properly declared with [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] Let me know if any more info is needed - I appreciate any and all help with this!

• Sql server management studio reporting "The semaphore timeout period has expired."

  On our development sql server, executing any query containing more than approximately 700 characters stalls for about 10 seconds and then reports the following error: Msg 121, Level 20, State 0, Line 0 A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The semaphore timeout period has expired.) for example, this query select * from FooTable where id = ' (.. and then 700 spaces ..) ' fails fails with the timeout error while this one select * from FooTable where id = ' (.. and then 600 spaces ..) ' fails with the expected Msg 8169, Level 16, State 2, Line 1 Conversion failed when converting from a character string to uniqueidentifier. - immediately. Indeed, throwing any query, including random garbage at our dev sql server exhibits this behaviour, while any other sql server I have available acts as expected, so I would think that the query never actually gets to parsing on the server. I'm at a loss here - any hints?

• Planning a skillset for a fallback career [closed]

  I'm not too certain this is a SO question, but I didn't think it belonged in meta either. Long story short, I am bioinformatics researcher. I like to code, it's my favourite part of the job. I have been thinking for a while that if academia is not kind to me, I might seek a career in software development. My current contract is for three years and I would like to spend some time over the next 3 three years learning and practicing software development as possible. Python seems like a popular language and it what I mostly use to do things for me, but I am also in heavy use of R. So my main question is: Are python and R good things to be learning with a sotfware dev goal in mind, and if so, is there any particular type of programming or software that might be useful to have experience with. • RewriteRule - Doesn't work on live site - subfolder to new domain

  I have the following rule on my local dev site and it works fine: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^localhost$ RewriteRule ^subdomains/example.com(.*) http://www.example.com$1 [R=301,L] However when I change it to: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.domain.com$ RewriteRule ^subdomains/example.com(.*) http://www.example.com$1 [R=301,L] and upload it to my live site it doesn't work, if i change the rule to: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.domain.com$ RewriteRule ^subdomains/(.*) http://www.example.com$1 [R=301,L] the rule functions as expected and directs an url beginning with www.domain.com/subdomains/ to www.example.com/. Does anyone know what is going on here? Thanks for you help.

• Get local network interface addresses using only proc?

  How can I obtain the (IPv4) addresses for all network interfaces using only proc? After some extensive investigation I've discovered the following: ifconfig makes use of SIOCGIFADDR, which requires open sockets and advance knowledge of all the interface names. It also isn't documented in any manual pages on Linux. proc contains /proc/net/dev, but this is a list of interface statistics. proc contains /proc/net/if_inet6, which is exactly what I need but for IPv6. Generally interfaces are easy to find in proc, but actual addresses are very rarely used except where explicitly part of some connection. There's a system call called getifaddrs, which is very much a "magical" function you'd expect to see in Windows. It's also implemented on BSD. However it's not very text-oriented, which makes it difficult to use from non-C languages.

The UI folks will mock up a screen in PowerPoint and we (the development group) will take it from there. So, for a side gig of mine I decided to do some mock ups to show the client prior to dev and I'm quickly feeling that PowerPoint is not the right tool for this. What are you using for this type of stuff - some other software? pen/paper?

  There are many open-source libraries that can be compiled with Visual Studio. I'm porting a program from Linux to Windows, but it depends on a number of libraries. I don't know what the best practices regarding libraries are on Windows. On Linux, these libraries are typically part of the distribution. To use sqlite on Debian, for example, you need only to install libsqlite3-dev and the include files and libraries (both static and dynamic) are automatically installed and available to your program. If you need a different version than your distribution supplies, you can compile it in your home directory, install it to ~/include and ~/lib, and set the appropriate environment variables so that your compiler includes those directories in its search path. What is the best way to use libraries that are distributed as source on Windows? If I link dynamically rather than statically, is there an easy way to copy required DLLs into the output directory to ease redistribution (assuming license requirements are met)?

• How to avoid becoming a programmer while still beign closely involved with computer science/Industry

  I am studying computer science (A masters at an Ivy league), however most of the jobs i find involve way too much of programming. And frankly programming is not an issue, however programming without a meaning (read financial institution (non trading), other non mainstream jobs) bore me to death! I dont want to end up becoming a .NET,C#, Java kind of programmer. Can someone tell where i should look for jobs if i wish to do some real computer science work such as Machine Learning etc. I don't mind programming but becoming a Financial Software dev at Bloomeberg or an SDET at Microsoft isn't actually one of my goals. [note: I have interviewed for intern both positions listed above, and thankfully i got an intern for a data mining position in a top 750 Alexa rank web company] Sorry if angered anyone with a subjective question
