  Example: User installs app v.1.0, adds data. Then the dev submits 10 updates in 10 weeks. After 11 weeks, the user wants v.11.0 and grabs a copy from the app store. Assuming that the app has got 11 .xcdatamodel versions inside, where ***11.xcdatamodel is the current one, what would happen now since the persistent store of the user is ages old? would the migration happen 10 times, step-by-step through every migration iteration? Or does the actual migration of data (lets assume gigabytes of data) happen exactly once, after Core Data (or the persistent store coordinator) has figured out precisely what to do to go from v.1.0 to v.11.0?

• How exactly can Python compliment your C# skills for windows based development?

  I'm looking for a fun challenge, and am thinking about learning Python. I've heard really good things about the language. My question is, how (if at all) can Python compliment the skills of a typical C# developer working mainly with MS technologies on a Windows Platform. Some examples of typical C# dev on windows would be (SOA applications, web applications, windows services, automation, xml handling) Surely there must be some scenarios where knowing Python would help you get certain tasks done quicker or more efficiently than using traditional C# / MS technologies.   I am currently using jQuery cycle to display featured projects. I currently have the next and prev buttons setup, I also have four rounded buttons in between. I would like them to function as both a link to the corresponding slide as well as add a class to the button who's slide is currently active. I have the nav setup and the active class setup I just need the jQuery. You can see the code at http://jjnold.com/dev in the main slider at the top. I was thinking it's probably something like this to assign the class but I'm not sure how to link to the corresponding slide and have them work together. • Beginning Programmer Interested in Android - Should I Start with Java?

  I'm a beginner in programming. My experience so far is only in Actionscript 2 and 3. So I have a basic understanding of declaring variables, loops, arrays, if/then, do/while... I'm wanting to move to developing for Android phones so I'm wondering what suggestions people have for where to go next. Should I jump right to Android? Start with a 'beginning Java' approach? Or should I go some other route to beef up my knowledge of OOP concepts before launching into Android? • Point IIS at debug folder

  I am working on an asp.net mvc web service and an Android app that need to be able to communicate with one another. However, when running a web service/web site in Visual Studio it can only be accessed by that machine. So what I want to do is point IIS at my project's bin/debug folder, thus exposing my dev environment to my local network. I know this is possible because my work machine is set up this way, I just don't know how it is done. How do I configure IIS to load a web app from the debug directory of my Visual Studio project?

• Deploying Rails app over VPN

  You'll have to bear with me as I'm not a Ruby dev, but have inherited a Ruby system. I need to deploy some changes to the app from my repository to the server. I've been instructed to run cap deploy and told that that script will get the latest code from my repository and deploy it to the server. My problem is that I have to VPN to get to the production server and the VPN client then blocks access to my local network, cutting off the repository. So my question is, how can I change my deploy.rb so that I can deploy from my local machine instead? Or is there a better way. If you need to see the deploy.rb, please let me know. Thanks Dave

  I've never been able to find a good script or plugin for sql server Management Studio (2005 and or 2008) for a very common scripting need: specifying a few/all rows in a table and scripting their insert. You can guess my story: I've got some configuration data in my dev db and I need to script it for deployment to UAT and then production. I've found a few cludgy systems in the past, that were more trouble than they were worth. I need something free and unobtrusive. Once I find it I'll share it with the other 20 developers in my shop who are annoyed by this. Aren't we all annoyed by this by the way? What is the best, easiest, free, way to specify a few/all rows in a table and get a script their insert?

• .net configurable business error messages

  Hi all, I need to implement some kind of solution such that in our business logic layer when certain conditions are met an error message is returned. That error message should be configurable either in a file or table that can be edited at run time if needed. I've seen it done before a few ways and it always ends up something like "This error message is {0}" and then when the dev goes the use the message they dont neccesarily know how many (if any) parameters the message needs. Just hoping to leverage off something that may have already been done, I dont think there is a provider or anything already in the .net framework.

• Windows service thread not updating database until complete

  I have a windows service with a FileSystemWatcher. When a new file is dropped in my folder a new thread is created, started, and I begin processing the file. Throughout this process I am making updates to the database (Linq to SQL) to keep track of the file's processing progress. Problem is none of my database updates are reflected throughout the process, just an update after everything has been completed. Any ideas? Note: when doing dev/testing my code was in an aspx page and worked great, but when I put it in a windows service I no longer get the progress updates. Thanks!

• Limiting Subscriptions to be emailed using SSRS

  Currently, our system will do a "foreach" over all Subscriptions which are returned from the ListSubscriptions method of ReportingService and fire a Timed Subscription event so that they receive the report as an email. In our dev environment, I don't want every subscription of these reports to be sent out when we are testing. Is there a way I can create a new subscription with my own email address being used so that I receive the report? The temp subscription could then be deleted after sending. Any ideas on how to do this?

  This is a pretty simple question about setting parameters in the my.cnf file for mysql 5.1. This page gives me the parameters I can tune: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/server-parameters.html and so I think I would need to write key_buffer_size = 256M But when I open my current my.cnf, it has the line: key_buffer = 16M My question is, do I need "key_buffer_size" or "key_buffer" or does it not matter which I use? And, how would I know if something in the my.cnf is incorrect? Where's the daemon start log file? I am running ubuntu; I think version 8.04 LTS

  How are people handling the use of templates in their Go-based AppEngine applications? Specifically, I'm looking for a project structure that affords the following: Hierarchical (directory) structure of templates and partial templates Allow me to use HTML tools/editors on my templates (embedding template text in xxx.go files makes this difficult) Automatic reload of template text when on dev server Potential stumbling blocks are: template.ParseGlob() will not traverse recursively. For performance reasons it has been recommended not to upload your templates as raw text files (because those text files reside on different servers than executing code). Please note that I am not looking for a tutorial/examples of the use of the template package. This is more of an app structure question. • is it a good idea to write tests for environments other than development?

  Let's say I have a (fairly typical) set of environments: PROD, UAT, QA, DEV. Is it a good idea to run your tests across all environments? Here's what I'm thinking of. I have a proc in SQL that my code depends on, I'll call it proc_getActiveCustomers. If that proc isn't present my app will go south real fast. So I write a test that checks for the existence of this proc in the database. Nothing new here. But when I then deploy my app to the QA environment, would I also want to have a test that checks that environment for the existence of proc_getActiveCustomers? I think this is a good idea but I've never heard much about testing in environments outside of development. Makes me wonder if there's some downside I'm not aware of. The direction that I'm going is to have a list of environments in code and then passing that environment into my unit test.

  Hi everyone, When trying memcache:get, I'll get the following error message back: Message: Memcache::get() [memcache.get]: Server localhost (tcp 11211) failed with: Failed reading line from stream (0) I run a Windows 32bit test environment (XP) and here's how my code looks: function getMulti(array $keys) { $items = $this->memcache->get($keys); return $items; } My memcache servers are two local computers in the LAN that my dev. environment is connected to. • Jetty: Mount to a directory on a different host

  I'm looking to map to a directory on a different host using Jetty/Maven when working locally. I've found you can do this w/ Apache using mod_jk (JkMount/JkUnMount), but haven't figured it how to do the same on jetty. On our dev/q/live servers, we have Apache in front of JBoss and use mod_jk to do this. Locally, we're using jetty To give you an idea of what I'm talking about, this is how you would configure Apache to accomplish this: in httpd.conf: JkMount /images/* host2 JkMount /* host2 JkUnMount /images/* host1 workers.properties: worker.list=host2,host1 worker.host2.host=host-2.theDomain.com worker.host2.port=46654 worker.host1.host=host-1.theDomain.com worker.host1.port=46655 Is there a way to configure Jetty to do the same thing? • SQL Server 2005: When clicking "Add" database I keep getting 'verify that the path or file exists'

  When I right click on "databases" in Sql Server 2005 Management Studio and then Attach... Add I get the following error: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\SQL Server Management Studio\ Projects\Path\To\MDF\And\LDF\Files\ cannot access the specified path or file on the server. Verify that you have the necessary security privileges and that the path or file exists. The answer is easy - the MDF and LDF files where removed when Nant (by way of my dev machine) issued a drop command. But, after replacing the MDF and LDF files, I want to reattach the database but the above error keeps coming up when I select "Add". Also, I have already "unattached" the database in question and it no longer appears on the left under "databases". I have tried to replace a copy of the MDF and LDF files in the folder being referenced and that didn't work. Any ideas as to how to gracefully get rid of this error?

• Ways to wrap 32-bit .dll so it will work in a 64-bit OS

  So, I've been using JPIB to communicate with GPIB devices in my java program. However, I have run into a snag. Newer systems are built on 64 bit OS's. However, the jpib.dll file is written in 32-bit. I can't think of any kind of calls that it would need to make that are truly 64-bit dependent. The real trouble here is that the JPIB project hasn't been updated since september of 2006. I've tried emailing the dev through SourceForge but I don't think I'll get anywhere with that. Does anyone know of any ways around this? Or know how (and could tell me how) to recompile the .dll into AMD-64 compliance?

  I have written a script to create an audit trails to my database in a second one db. So far I had no problems during tests on my dev machine from SQL Server Management Studio. Problems started to occurs when I first tried to test my triggers from my application by modyfing data in it. Using profiler I found out, that my audit trails db is not visible in sys.databases, so here lies the problem. The application using an Application Role, so as I found on MSDN, that's why I can't get access to other db on the server. I'm not a DBA. I have no experience with properly settings the security stuff, so please guide me, how can I set the setting for guest account (according to MSDN) to get access to this db? I need to have a record for this database in sys.databases and I need to be able to insert data in this database in all tables. No select, update or delete I need.

I want to use a Windows text editor to edit code that's on my Ubuntu server. I've tried using the Shared Folders setting, adding "/var/www" but it says that the path is not absolute. When I click on "other", it only allows me to browse folders on my Win7 host. Both the host and guest are 64-bit OS. Thanks in advance!

  Hello, I am writing a backend application which needs to be able to send multiple SQL commands to a MySQL server. MySQL = 5.x support multiple statements, but unfortunately we are interfacing with MySQL 4.x. I am trying to find a way (hint: regex) to split SQL statements by their semicolon, but it should ignore semicolons in single and double quotes strings. http://www.dev-explorer.com/articles/multiple-mysql-queries has a very nice regex to do that, but doesn't support double quotes. I'd be happy to hear your suggestions.

  I'm curious, I've been developing pretty powerful websites/web apps, and I've never learnt XML, even odder I've never really felt the need to. It's not like Curl or Prepared Statements where before knowing what they did and how they worked I had a feeling 'there's got to be an easier way to do this!' or 'there's got to be something designed for this!'. Currently I work with MySQL and JSON and I don't have this feeling of 'I need to learn that' (XML), this must be wrong! I'm really interested to hear some compelling arguments for XML, and learn about things which it can do beter than JSON or MySQL (or some other aspect of web dev) and when i should be using it!

• Resizing Ubuntu x64 Server Partition with VirtualBox not reflected in OS

  I've already resized my virtual disk with VirtualBox, but now need to extend the partition of my Ubuntu VM itself. I thought I was on my way with GParted live CD, but after I resize the "extended" filesystem partition, and then the child "lvm2 pv" filesystem partition to fill the unallocated space, df -h still shows the original disk size after I reboot into the VM. Any tips on this? I've scoured the webs tirelessly. Should I be resizing the boot (/dev/sda1) partition instead? Should I try to convert my lvm2 to ext4 or something? I'm lost on this. Note: VirtualBox hard disk is "dynamic". Specs: VBox 4.2.18 Ubuntu 12.04.2 amd64 Gparted 0.16.2-1b-i486

• case sensititivity with users controller on certain hosting

  We generally use two different hosting services. On one, everything works ticketyboo, as it does on my local dev servers. On the other server, however, I am having this problem: I can't access the users controller like this: http://www.example.com/users/login But I can like this: http://www.example.com/Users/login ** note the capitalised 'Users' ** If I displace the application to a sub-folder everything works fine (both upper- and lowercase). The hosting company have looked at it and can't see a problem at their end and they assure me that users is not a reserved word. You might say this isn't a problem, just use the version that works. Unfortunately it leads to problems downstream where Cake core starts generating urls itself. Anybody else seen this problem or know the solution? [This only occurs on the users controller - all others work as expected]
