  • Trouble virtualizing application under Windows 7

    Hi, I'm trying to virtualize an application for Windows 7 but am running into trouble: Application will run fine in Windows 7 if installed in the base. When it is virtualized, it will run on XP, but not on Windows 7. I have tried this in three ways: Captured on XP with ThinApp 4.0 Captured on XP with ThinApp 4.5 Captured on Windows 7 with ThinApp 4.5 Even when captured on Windows 7, it will not run on Windows 7 but will run on XP. When captured with a rival product, Altiris SVS, the virtualized app runs fine on Windows 7. Any idea what could cause this behaviour? Looking at the trace file, you see that they are different right from the start when comparing Windows 7 and XP tracefiles. What could cause it to go in completely different directions? (And why does the tracefile on Windows 7 say: Operating System Unknown? Does everybody have that on Windows 7 even with 4.5?) The error message is: "Object variable or with block variable not set".

  • android.app.Application subclass, onTerminate is not being called

    From the documentation for android.app.Application: "Base class for those who need to maintain global application state" I am using my own subclass to maintain an object that I'm using to query a server. Also from the documentation: "onTerminate() Called when the application is stopping." However, onTerminate() in my class is never called. I press the back button while viewing my main activity, and everything seems to shut down. My main Activity's onDestroy() method is called and isFinishing() returns true, but my android.app.Application's onTerminate() method is never called. Why is this? What am I missing? Is there something that is keeping it open?

    Long winded title, short question: If one wants to develop for Windows but not have to rely on any external dependency (no runtime, thus ruling out .net), what supported, alive and fully functioning* alternatives are there? Visual Basic 6 is dead, Visual C++ is obvious and Delphi seems to be the prime choice for that, but I wonder if there are any other alternatives? *as in: Being able to use all the Windows Features like putting an icon in the Notification Area, making the Taskbar Icon flash etc.

    Hi, We plan to sell a Windows portable application. By 'portable' I mean that it can be run from any Windows computer without installing it. For example from an USB stick etc. However the application while (theoretically) it can work anywhere, is targeted to LAN environments. What solutions do you see that while keeping this advantage (in a more or a lesser degree) to still make money from it? PS: The application is/will be written in Delphi.

  • Facebook iframe application redirects to local server

    I am using FaceBook application inside iframe. But when I try to access it using url like http://apps.facebook.com/myapp, it immediately redirects me to my lhttp://localhost:8080 application, which I intended to keep in frame. I assume that my local application should stay in frame, while the general container would be FB site itself, but something is wrong. Any hints?

    Does anyone have experience writing professional OpenGL games on Windows? For the Mac, due to apple's control, the OS seems quite "uniform". For windows, due to different hardware, different drivers installed, etc ... the hardware base seems to have many many different configurations. In theory, OpenGL provides a API that abstracts all this away. In practice, many drivers are often buggy and have weird cases -- has this been a problem for developing games on Windows? Thanks!

  • Looking for application performance tracking software

    I have multiple java-based applications which produce statistics on how long method calls take. Right now the information is being written into a log file and I analyse performance that way. However with multiple apps and more monitoring requirements this is being becoming a bit overwhelming. I am looking for an application which will collect stats and graph them so I can analyse performance and be aware of performance degradation. I have looked at Solarwinds Application Performance Monitoring, however this polls periodically to gather information. My applications are totally event based and we would like to graph and track this accordingly. I almost started hacking together some scripts to produce Google Charts but surely there are applications which do this already. Suggestions?

    Is it possible to configure an ASP.NET application under IIS 7 so it can read files stored in a mapped network drive? I'm not trying to serve up the contents of the drive. I simply need to read the contents within the ASP.NET application. I've searched the Web and haven't really found a solid answer. The questions in my mind are: Is this possible via configuration (i.e. I cannot modify the client code)? If so, what are the step by step instructions. If it is not possible, I'm fine with that. I already know UNC paths work but using them drastically changes the work flow. Thanks! Bobby

    Hi, My system is Windows Server 2008 R2 with IIS 7.5. I need to run a site which is allowed to do some administrative tasks. I have created an AD user account and added it to all the required groups. The site's application pool runs with custom identity set to this AD account. This works, however some tasks fail with 'Access is denied'. I have found that it was caused by UAC (with UAC disabled everything works ok). So my question is - is it possible to run an application pool in elevated mode without globally disabling UAC? Possibly just disabling UAC just for this one account.

    We need to write unit tests for a wxWidgets application using Google Test Framework. The problem is that wxWidgets uses the macro IMPLEMENT_APP(MyApp) to initialize and enter the application main loop. This macro creates several functions including int main(). The google test framework also uses macro definitions for each test. One of the problems is that it is not possible to call the wxWidgets macro from within the test macro, because the first one creates functions.. So, we found that we could replace the macro with the following code: wxApp* pApp = new MyApp(); wxApp::SetInstance(pApp); wxEntry(argc, argv); That's a good replacement, but wxEntry() call enters the original application loop. If we don't call wxEntry() there are still some parts of the application not initialized. The question is how to initialize everything required for a wxApp to run, without actually running it, so we are able to unit test portions of it?

What language-specific/tech-specific books (like those named above) would teach me a great deal about general programming techniques and good habits? I'm thinking Java books would be very good for me (I code in C# primarily), as both these languages are similar and so I am sure that specialist books on Java threading, performance tuning, etc, can be applied to C# (not all 100% content of a Java book).   • Implementing the outside application „openedFileView“ in c# Project

    I work on a application where i want to find out which files on my filesystem is used by a Process. After trying around with the System.Diagnostics.Process class, and didn´t get the resulst i wanted i find the application called OpenedFileView from Nirsoft. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/opened_files_view.html Basically it does exactly what i want but i have some problems with the implimication in my project. The option wich “OpenedFileView” gives you is to start it with some arguments that it creates you an txt file with all the information i want. But for my case i want to whach the processes in realtime, and if i start the application repetitively i always have the hourglass at my mouse cursor. So after this i tryed some ways to get rid of it, tryed out to put it in a BackgroundWorker Thread. But this changed nothing at all. I also looked for a way to force the Process not to exit, and sending new arguments to it, but this also didn´t worked. So is there any way to use this application in the way I want, or does this didn´t work at all? I hope somebody can help me either with getting away this annoying mouse cursor hourglass, or with a better implimication of this application so i can use it in realtime!   • Annoying Application on Mac Creating Unwanted File

    Last year, I installed an application on my Mac called Pocketcam. A few days later, I have removed the app from my Mac by dragging and dropping it into the trash bin. Apparently by doing that, it didn't remove the application completely as there are still some files left on the computer that is creating a log file in my document folder. The file keeps coming back after deleting it numerous times. So my question is, "how do I find the file that is creating that file and remove it completely from my Mac?"

  • Why would autoconf/automake project link against installed library instead of local development libr

    I'm creating a library libgdata that has some tests and non-installed programs. I am running into the problem that once I've installed the library once, the programs seem to be linking to the installed version and not the local version in ../src/libgdata.la any longer. What could cause this? Am I doing something horribly wrong? Here is what my test/Makefile.am looks like: INCLUDES = -I$(top_srcdir)/src/ -I$(top_srcdir)/test/ # libapiutil contains all of our dependencies! AM_CXXFLAGS = $(APIUTIL_CFLAGS) AM_LDFLAGS = $(APIUTIL_LIBS) LDADD = $(top_builddir)/src/libgdata.la noinst_PROGRAMS = gdatacalendar gdatayoutube gdatacalendar_SOURCES = gdatacalendar.cc gdatayoutube_SOURCES = gdatayoutube.cc TESTS = check_bare check_PROGRAMS = $(TESTS) check_bare_SOURCES = check_bare.cc (libapiutil is another library that has some helper stuff for dealing with libcurl and libxml++) So, for instance, if I run the tests without having installed anything, everything works fine. I can make changes locally and they are picked up by these programs right away. If I install the package, these programs will compile (it seems like it does actually look locally for the headers), but once I run the program it complains about missing symbols. As far as I can tell, it is linking against the newly built library (../src/libgdata.la) based on the make output, so I'm not sure why this would be happening. If i remove the installed files, the local changes to src/* are picked up just fine. UPDATE 2 I did two tests. First, I did this after blowing away my dev-install directory (--prefix) and in that case, it creates test/.libs/lt-gdatacalendar. Once I have installed the library, though, it creates test/.libs/gdatacalendar instead. The output of ldd is the same for both with one exception: # before install # ldd test/.libs/lt-gdatacalendar libgdata.so.0 => /home/altern8/workspaces/4355/libgdata/src/.libs/libgdata.so.0 (0xb7c32000) # after install # ldd test/.libs/gdatacalendar libgdata.so.0 => /home/altern8/workspaces/4355/dev-install/lib/libgdata.so.0 (0xb7c87000) What would cause this to create lt-gdatacalendar in one case but gdatacalendar in another?   • Automated testing in Android development

    I have an ordinary project with JUnit tests that are connected to the classes in my Android Project. I want my server to run some JUnit tests in my testproject everytime I commit my code from my Android Project. Is there a best practise to do this? So far I only managed to run the tests when they are a part of a while the JUnit tests and Android classes are separated into 2 different projects, since JUnit runs on JVM and Android in an emulator on DVM (Dalvik Virtual Machine).
