• How to null a translation in in gettext system?

  Suppose a simple phrase "In" in English needs to be interpreted as "" - empty string in Russian. Is is possible to specify that in the .po file? What normally happens if you set msgstr "" - you'll get the untranslated key, but I want to get nothing in that specific case. Here is a use case: I have underneath a search bar a set of buttons to select questions (for a Q&A site) from particular scopes - like so: (in English) In: [all] [unanswered] [my own] (in Russian I want) [???] [??? ???????] [???] It just sounds more natural. Yes I can leave out In for english, but I don't want to and I do not want to put button (things in [] are buttongs) html into the 'po' file. Thanks!

  Hi, Let's say I have the following class hierarchy: class Base { protected: virtual void foo() = 0; friend class Other; }; class Derived : public Base { protected: void foo() { /* Some implementation */ }; }; class Other { public: void bar() { Derived* a = new Derived(); a->foo(); // Compiler error: foo() is protected within this context }; }; I guess I could change it too a->Base::foo() but since foo() is pure virtual in the Base class, the call will result in calling Derived::foo() anyway. However, the compiler seems to refuse a->foo(). I guess it is logical, but I can't really understand why. Am I missing something ? Can't (shouldn't) it handle this special case ? Thank you.

• CodeIgniter | direct Echo during working script

  Is it possible to echo something while the script for example is still running in a loop? my problem: I ask the server with Ajax and then the server is fetching mails and store them in Database. This took around 15 sec. During that Time the Server should echo his progress so that the Javascript can update a loading bar. This is working with a php script without CodeIgniter well. Is there a way to skip the output class and all that stuff to get a direct echo? Thanks

• cufon problem background image

  Hi guys!! I'm developing a website and for the first time i found problems using cufon... if you think u know about cofon check this.. http://universite.jvsoftware.com If you open with firefox and IE, you will notice in the navigation bar, when you over the titles will appear a border (actually is an image) but if you open it with chrome or safari, that image doesnt appear.... the cufon script is easy to find in the source code, also the css. • Deleted nib still displayed when controller is pushed

  I have an application with a UINavcontroller under a tab bar controller. To create the navigation model I want, I push a container UIView object onto the stack to manage additional views(Thanks Frank). When I created the container class, an associated nib file was created along with it. I at first used that nib file, but it turned out it was better not to. So I deleted the nib (and selected 'also move to trash'). The problem is that it still shows up when I push its view controller onto the stack. I have tried emptying the cache in xcode and restarting xcode. What am I missing?

• Vim: How to exchange key bindings? (bind '|' on '7' key)

  Having the German Mac Keyboard Layout, it is a pain to type | as it is bound to <A-7> and it is hard for me to reach the Alt key. Thus, I'd like to do the following remapping (exchanging the binding for | and 7): imap 7 <Bar> imap <A-7> 7 The first one works, the second one does not. I have already tried all combinations with inor (no remap) but wasn't successful. Maybe I don't get the concept of remapping. Or I am missing something else.

• Android GPS app not closing connection

  Hi there, Fairly new to Android, so just trying to work out: I have a simple Maps app that plots a couple of locations. It's a demo for a potentially bigger app later. The one thing I would like to do is make it exit correctly. I want to assume that when a user hits the "Home" or "Back" button on the phone, that they have exited the app. I want when this has happened for the GPS process to shut down. I can't seem to find any examples of how to do this correctly. I have an onDestroy() subclass with a super.onDestroy() method but this doesn't seem to cut it. I've tested on my phone and while everything else seems to work fine, this is bugging me. I keep seeing the GPS icon in the notifications bar. To give you an example, this doesn't happen when you leave GoogleMaps. Anyone any ideas or know what I'm missing? T

• What do I put in my Ruby (JRuby) code to break into the debugger?

  I'm familiarizing myself with some JRuby code, and I'd like to be able to place a breakpoint in the code and run (as usual) from the command-line, having it break into the debugger when it gets to that point. Is there something I can put in my code to force JRuby to break into the debugger? I've tried running jruby -r debug foo.rb (instead of the usual jruby foo.rb), and then setting a breakpoint with b bar.py:98, and then continuing. But the debugger stops every time there's an exception, and there seem to be a lot of them before it gets to the line of code I'm interested in. I'd like to be able to put the "break-into-debugger" line(s) in my code and run jruby foo.rb and have the first place the debugger stops be at that line. (i.e. I'm looking for the Ruby/JRuby equivalent of import pdb;pdb.set_trace() in Python.)

  I am new at selenium testing and am writing a bunch of tests for a webpage that relies heavily on javascript user interaction. At first I wrote a lot of assertions of the style If I press button A" then assert number of visible rows = x, assert checkboxes checked are such assert title = bar .... [20 more] and so on. Then I switched to checksumming the HTML using MD5: If I press button A" then assert md5(html) = 8548bccac94e35d9836f1fec0da8115c. And it made my life a whole lot easier... But is this a bad practice in any way?

  I am using matplotlib in Python to plot a line with errorbars as follows: plt.errorbar(xvalues, up_densities, yerr=ctl_sds, fmt='-^', lw=1.2, markersize=markersize, markeredgecolor=up_color, color=up_color, label="My label", clip_on=False) plt.xticks(xvalues) I set the ticks on the x-axis using "xticks". However, the error bars of the last point in xvalues (i.e. xvalues[-1]) are clipped on the right -- meaning only half an error bar appears. This is true even with the clip_on=False option. How can I fix this, so that the error bars appear in full, even though their right side is technically outside xvalues[-1]? thanks.

• MoveWindow API doesn't work well on Vista

  Hello! I have an application on Vista which loops through all processes and finds associated main windows in order to move and resize them. The problem is that some windows get moved and resized and some don't. Also it even seems that moved and resized windows aren't moved and resized according to the MoveWindow function call because they are resized to title bar and all of them are on the same line (same y coordinate). Here's the sample code: IntPtr handle; Process[] processList = Process.GetProcesses(); int i = 0; foreach (Process process in processList) { handle = process.MainWindowHandle; if (handle != IntPtr.Zero) //If the process has window then move and resize it. { bool moveResult = MoveWindow(handle, i * 50, i * 50, 500, 500, true); i++; } } Is this because of Vista? What alternative should I use?

  Hi, I want to add an progress bar into my C# based application. I would like to know what is the good way of updating its value at particular events? My problem is, I have single function in UI which does all the processing.This function in turn calls many more functions, creates objects, updates database, etc. (basically performs all the work) and returns values in an output file. I have access to that function only. So in this how to update the progressbar's value at the end of each step? What is the best practice for this kind of situation? • GCC compiler -- bug or unspecified behavior?

  When I have conflicting definitions of the ivars of a class in objective-c (not redeclaring the class in the same file, but rather naming the same class with diff ivars, no warnings or better yet errors are issued by the compiler. However, both sets of ivars are useable by the appropriate methods in the respective files. For instance Foo.m: @interface foo { int a; } - (int)method; @end @implementation foo - (int)method { return a; } @end Bar.m: @interface foo { float baz; } @end @implementation foo (category) - (float)blah { return baz; } @end compiles without warnings or errors. Is this intentional? Is this an unchecked error? (for the record, a and baz are actually the same memory location.)

  I'm mainly using c++ win32 API project and the question is asked keeping in mind: When you use microsoft visual studio 2010 visual c++ editor and you minimize any function, then ahead of the function you get a box; hovering over which you see the entire function. How to implement this in c++ win32 API ? for ex- when a win32 project is created in vs2010, and empty project checkbox is unchecked then by default you get a code which after running produces a window which has a menu bar containing File an Help. Now i want some text to come when i hover over each of them. I do not want a code just a hint how it can be done. Thanks in advance.

• Write file in sub-directory in Android

  I'm trying to save a file in a subdirectory in Android 1.5. I can successfully create a directory using _context.GetFileStreamPath("foo").mkdir(); (_context is the Activity where I start the execution of saving the file) but then if I try to create a file in foo/ by _context.GetFileStreamPath("foo/bar.txt"); I get a exception saying I can't have directory separator in a file name ("/"). I'm missing something of working with files in Android... I thought I could use the standard Java classes but they don't seem to work... I searched the Android documentation but I couldn't fine example and google is not helping me too... I'm asking the wrong question (to google)... Can you help me out with this? Thank you!

  I probably couldn't depict it better in the title (and if it has a term let me know), but just to quell the obscurity, I was referring to something like this. After you wait for the page to load, see how when you scroll down, the social media left bar stays fixed, but then when you scroll just enough that it meets your upper side, it sticks to it as you scroll further. I wanted to implement something corny and pretentious like that, so does anybody know a tutorial or a method to get that done in jquery? (I can probably do it myself, if I'm not mistaken, just need some sense of direction from savvy jqueryists). Is there a way to know when and how much a user scrolls? Can it be done with id's like the # url appendix to jump to a specific element? Just some ideas...

• CSS navigation submenu and seperator

  I have created a navigation bar that is centered with CSS which works. Each li item is separated with a border which is a background image. When hovering on the nav items, the separator disappears because the hover changes the background (I guess) but I wonder how I can fix this, padding or margin can't work because it will just shift the li element. Second problem is that the sub menu items aren't displaying correctly and I have no idea why... • When using out parameters in a function, is it good practice to initialize them in the function?

  I have a function that uses out parameters to return multiple values to the caller. I would like to initialize them in the function, but I wasn't sure if that's a bad idea since you don't know when you call the function that it's going to change the values right away. The caller might assume that after the function returns, if whatever it was doing didn't work, the values would be whatever they were initialized to in the caller. Is it ok / good for me to initialize in the function?   If i enter a url directly into the address bar of the browser, i get the following results: logger.debug ENV['HTTP_REFERER'] // => logger.debug request.referrer // => / So the first one gives me a blank result which is what I expected but the second gives me the root? Is this correct? It seems from the docs (http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActionController/AbstractRequest.html#M000478) that they should return the same thing. And secondly, why does it return the root, if there was no referrer.

• g++: how to specify preference of library path?

  I'm compiling a c++ program using g++ and ld. I have a .so library I want to be used during linking. However, a library of the same name exists in /usr/local/lib, and ld is choosing that library over the one I'm directly specifying. How can I fix this? For the examples below, my library file is /my/dir/libfoo.so.0. Things I've tried that don't work: my g++ command is "g++ -g -Wall -o my_binary -L/my/dir -lfoo bar.cpp" adding /my/dir to the beginning or end of my $PATH env variable adding /my/dir/libfoo.so.0 as an argument to g++ Thanks.
