• Proper chart scaling in Reporting Services 2005

  I'm developing a simple bar-chart in Reporting Services 2005 with a stored procedure as data-source. The values in this graph can be both positive and negative, and can span a very big range, and hence I cannot specify any non-dynamic scale that will work for all scenarios. The problem I'm facing is that the automatic scaling pretty much sucks. I get no line to show where the zero-point is, and the y-scale labels are from top to bottom: 8818 -191181 -391181 etc etc... So my question is, what is the best approach to make the scale more adapted to human reading? Is there any guide out there? Does reporting services 2008 handle this better? Also, moving away from Reporting Services is not really an option. I realize how to put values and expression in the max, min, and the gridline interval fields, although its more of a question what expressions I should put there.

• How to figure out "progress" while sorting?

  I'm using stable_sort to sort a large vector. The sorting takes on the order of a few seconds (say, 5-10 seconds), and I would like to display a progress bar to the user showing how much of the sorting is done so far. But (even if I was to write my own sorting routine) how can I tell how much progress I have made, and how much more there is left to go? I don't need it to be exact, but I need it to be "reasonable" (i.e. reasonably linear, not faked, and certainly not backtracking).

• attaching multiple files to a domain class

  I've seen various Grails plugins which allow easier handling of file uploads, however these tend only to support a single file per form-submit. I'd like a multi-attach form where as soon as you pick one file, an extra field and button is added using JS (various sites do it like this). Do you know of any good plugins which provide elegant uploading of multiple files without excessive coding? A progress bar either per-file of for the whole process would also be very nice. I don't know to what extent I can allow GORM to handle a java.io.File field (or in this case a Collection<File>).

• Correct way to textually report the remaining time on a long running process?

  So you have a long running process, perhaps with a progress bar, and you want a text estimate of the remaining time, eg: "5 minutes remaining" "30 seconds remaining" etc. If you don't actually want to report clock time (due to accuracy or resolution or update-rate issues) but want to stick to the text summary, what is the correct paradigm? Is "one minute" left displayed from 0 to 60 seconds? or from 1:00 to 1:59? Say there's 1:35 Left - is that "2 minutes remaining" or "1 minute remaining"? Do you just pare it down to "A few minutes left" when you're less than 3 minutes? What is the preferred (least user-frustrating) method?

Inside the table is a notifications_type:string column that contains the type of notification, i.e. "foo" or "bar" or "oof" I want the user to be able to select what notifications they want to display, so there are checkboxes below the result that correspond to prefs_display_foo:boolean, prefs_display_bar:boolean in the User model. What is an elegant way for me to set the :conditions in the find to properly display the sorted results? Also, currently I have it as a method in the user, but how would I do it as a has_many :notifications, :conditions = .....

• c++: what is a good idea for a list of strings?

  I simply want to build an RPG and make it as neat as possible, I wish to define a pile of strings which I may want to edit later, so I tried something like this: enum {MSG_INIT = "Welcome to ...", MSG_FOO = "bar"}; But I just get errors, such as that MSG_INIT is not an integer! Why must it not be a string, are that what enums are only for? What do you think is the best way to define a pile of strings? In a struct called msg or something? I'm kinda new to all this so I'd really appreciate small examples.

  We have a PostgreSQL database. And we have several tables which need to keep certain data in several languages (the list of possible languages is thankfully system-wide defined). For example lets start with: create table blah (id serial, foo text, bar text); Now, let's make it multilingual. How about: create table blah (id serial, foo_en text, foo_de text, foo_jp text, bar_en text, bar_de text, bar_jp text); That would be good for full-text search in Postgres. Just add a tsvector column for each language. But is it optimal? Maybe we should use another table to keep the translations? Like: create table texts (id serial, colspec text, obj_id int, language text, data text); Maybe, just maybe, we should use something else - something out of the SQL world? Any help is appreciated.

• Retain Site Background and Switch Pages?

  I was about to redo a Rails site today using AJAX so that the background could remain in place. Then I thought, "that would be exactly like using frames," and then I thought about SEO consequences and I dropped the idea entirely and took a look around the Web. It turns out that few sites -- except for Google itself, which has the link bar at the top -- are doing this. It doesn't look impossible to do, but it's not exactly easy. Aside from Ajaxing, you have to think about updating the query-string and having SEO-friendly links (that actually don't work, but rather make background requests via Javascript). Will any of the new technologies -- HTML5, perhaps -- solve this problem and allow us to have a Web with background colors (and other static elements) that do not disappear momentarily between page refreshes? On the other hand, why are few devs doing this with current technologies? Is it just not a big deal, too complicated to implement, or....?

When I load this settings file, I can use the variables defined in settings.php in the script itself, but not within any functions I define in it.   In lua, it's legal to do this : table={} bar if(table[key]==nil) foo However, using C API, I couldn't find way to check if there's a nil value on the specified position. lua_getglobal(L,"table"); lua_gettable(L,key); If there's a nil value stored in table[key], lua_gettable would give me the "unprotected error in call to Lua API (attempt to index a nil value)" message. Is there any way to check if there's actually something associated with that key, before actually pushing the key to do so ?

  I am about to embark on my first outlook 2007 plugin. I would like to create a new tool bar that will have a button that will initially be disabled. When the user selects a message the button should be enabled... but only if the email is of a certain type of email... This is where I need your expert advice, is there a way to quickly flag an email in outlook, so that in the email select event you can look for a property of that email... for example... on_select if mail.type = "FromISP" then I would prefer not to use the from field.... the other thing is during the send process I need to set the flag, I am doing this again using .net so I have full control over how the mail is created.   I am working on a project where I am required to build a page somewhat similar to the one you see when you visit a website like blockbuster. When you click on browse more you are taken to a page with a bar on top with different page numbers and a drop down to select the number of pages you want to view on that page. I want to include a feature like that on my page but I am not sure where to start. In my page I have list of 200 items which I want to display page by page. I was suggested to use custom tags, but is there a more simpler or efficient way to create that functionality. My web application uses Spring MVC framework and is coded entirely in Java. I just want to line up vertically all the boxes and i am new to web design so i dont understand much about HTML or CSS. I dont think Frontpage 2003 has CSS.
