  • Which way is preferred when doing asynchronous WCF calls?

    When invoking a WCF service asynchronous there seems to be two ways it can be done. 1. public void One() { WcfClient client = new WcfClient(); client.BegindoSearch("input", ResultOne, null); } private void ResultOne(IAsyncResult ar) { WcfClient client = new WcfClient(); string data = client.EnddoSearch(ar); } 2. public void Two() { WcfClient client = new WcfClient(); client.doSearchCompleted += TwoCompleted; client.doSearchAsync("input"); } void TwoCompleted(object sender, doSearchCompletedEventArgs e) { string data = e.Result; } And with the new Task<T> class we have an easy third way by wrapping the synchronous operation in a task. 3. public void Three() { WcfClient client = new WcfClient(); var task = Task<string>.Factory.StartNew(() => client.doSearch("input")); string data = task.Result; } They all give you the ability to execute other code while you wait for the result, but I think Task<T> gives better control on what you execute before or after the result is retrieved. Are there any advantages or disadvantages to using one over the other? Or scenarios where one way of doing it is more preferable?

  • Can a second stored procedure doing the same thing finish before first one?

    Hello, I have an audit record table that I am writing to. I am connecting to MyDb, which has a stored procedure called 'CreateAudit', which is a passthrough stored procedure to another database on the same machine called 'CreatedAudit' as well. I call the CreateAudit stored procedure from my application, using subsonic as the DAL. The first time I call it, I call it with the following (pseudocode): Result = CreateAudit(recordId, "Opened") Right after that, I call: Result2 = CreateAudit(recordId, "Closed") In my second stored procedure it is supposed to mark the record that was created by the CreateAudit(recordId, "Opened") with a status of closed. It works great if I run them independently of one another, but when they run in sequence in the application, the record is not marked as "Closed". When I run SQL profiler I see that both queries ran, and if I copy the queries out and run them from query analyzer the record gets marked as closed 100% of the time! When I run it from the application, about once every 20 times or so, the record is successfully marked closed - the other 19 times nothing happens, but I do not get an error! Is it possible for the .NET app to skip over the ouput from the first stored procedure and start executing the second stored procedure before the record in the first is created? When I add a "WAITFOR DELAY '00:00:00:003'" to the top of my stored procedure, the record is also closed 100% of the time. My head is spinning, any ideas why this is happening! Thanks for any responses, very interested in hearing how this can happen.

  • Chrome.tabs.getSelected() doesn't work. What am I doing wrong ?

    Hi there ! I'm building my first GC extension, and I am having a problem using this function. I would like to get the url of the current tab, and to do so (after some google research, of course), I use the chrome.tabs.getSelected() function. Here it is in my code : ... socket.onopen = function(msg){ log("Welcome - status " + this.readyState); chrome.tabs.getSelected(null, function(tab){ sendUrl(tab.url); }); }; function sendUrl(tabUrl) { socket.send("#URL#"+ tabUrl); } The socket.open is a listener for the Websocket API I use in my extension. The log function print the status of the socket (1, which means it's OPEN or connected and ready to communicate, according to the Websocket API), but the chrome.tabs.getSelected() function do not seems to work, as the server do not receive anything (the socket is not the problem here, I tried to send a test message with socket.send() instead of chrome.tabs.getSelected() and the server received it). I put the permissions: ["tabs"] into the manifest.json so I can use this function. So I don't know what I am doing wrong here ? I also tried to put chrome.tab.getSelected() elsewhere in the code, but it is still not working. Any help is welcome :)

    I'm seeing a lot of answers on StackOverflow that say that JavaScript executes code sequentially, but I can actually see my own JavaScript not doing so. I know that one way might be to call add_marker from within add_markers_within_bounds, but for various reasons I'd rather keep it as a separate function.

    I am doing an university project. I need some sample programs on peer to peer programs in java socket programming. Every where people are telling to add a server socket in the client program. I am in a confusion. Can a single program having server socket and client socket will do or i have to create two programs of one initiating a system and another peer program running thrice to solve the problem. or i need to create three programs for three peer systems. I am not clear on the architecture of building peer to peer programs using java sockets. Can some one help me giving a simple program on how to create a peer to peer connection between three systems. I know how to do a socket program for client server model and clear on the concept. But creating a peer to peer architecture sounds complex for me to understand. I also referred this thread. developing peer to peer in java The person commented second says" To make peer2peer app each client opens server socket too. When client A wishes to connect to client B it just connects to its socket. " Need some more sample and an explanation on how peer to peer java socket program works I dont want any external api like jxta to do this task.   • Doing a global count of an object type (like Users), best practice?

    Hi, I know keeping global counters is frowned upon in app engine. I am interested in getting some stats though, like once every 24 hours. For example, I'd like to count the number of User objects in the system once every 24 hours. So how do we do this? Do we simply keep a set of admin tool functions which do something like: SELECT FROM com.me.project.server.User; and just see what the size of the returned List is? This is kind of a bummer because the datastore would have to deserialize every single User instance to create the returned list, right? I could optimize this possibly by asking for only the keys to be returned, so the whole User object doesn't have to be deserialized. Then again, a global counter for # of users probably would create too much contention, because there probably won't be hundreds of signups a minute for the service I'm creating. How should we go about doing this? Getting my total number of users once a day is probably a pretty typical operation? Thank you

  • Doing a DELETE request from <a> tag without constructing forms?

    Is there any way to force an <a href> to do a delete request when clicked instead of a regular GET? The "Rails" way is to dynamically generate a <form> tag that adds the appropriate params so that it gets routed to the right place, however I'm not too fond of that much DOM manipulation for such a simple task. I thought about going the route of something like: $("a.delete").click(function(){ var do_refresh = false; $.ajax({ type: "DELETE", url: "my/path/to/delete", success: function(){ do_refresh = true; }, failure: function(){ alert("There is an error"); } }); return do_return; //If this is false, no refresh would happen. If it //is true, it will do a page refresh. }); I'm not sure if the above AJAX stuff will work, as it's just theoretical. Is there any way to go about this? Note: Please don't recommend that I use the rails :method => :delete on link_to, as I'm trying to get away from using the rails helpers in many senses as they pollute your DOM with obtrusive javascript. I'd like this solution to be put in an external JS file and be included as needed.

  • Eclipse Check for Updates issue

    I install Eclipse from the Software Center so it links up and will be updated with the rest of my software. Because I am developing for Android, however, I have to install the ADT Plugin within Eclipse by going to Help Install new software (or something to that effect). Now, I do understand that I can update Eclipse through the actual Ubuntu software center/system, but in order to update plugins and extensions within Eclipse, I have to go to Help Check for Updates (which then scans all plugins for updates). The only issue, is that when I installed through the software center, the owner became root, and whenever I run it without root, I'm not able to update - I get the error message "Insufficient access privileges to apply this update." When I run it as root, all of my plugins disappear, because I guess I installed them as myself, not as root. I tried to install the plugins as root, but the Install New Software choice would not work. Ubuntu 12.04 and Eclipse 3.7.2-1

    SSAS Compare has a brand new website! The old page was thrown together in the way that most Red Gate labs sites tend to be — as experimental sites for experimental products. We’ve been developing SSAS Compare for a while now, so we decided it was time for something a bit prettier. The new site is mostly the work of Andrew, our marketing manager, who has all sorts of opinions about websites. One of the opinions Andrew has is that his photo should be on every site on the internet, or at least every Red Gate site on the internet, and that’s why his handsome visage now appears on the SSAS Compare page. Well, that isn’t quite true. According to Andrew, people download more software when they have photos of human beings to look at. We want as many people to try SSAS Compare as possible, so we got the team together for an intimate photoshoot directed by Red Gate’s resident recorder of light, Dom Reed (aka Mr Flibble). The photo will appear on the site as soon as Dom is finished photoshopping us into something more palatable, which is a big job. Until then, you’ll have to put up with Andrew. We’ve also used the new site to announce a special offer. Right now, SSAS Compare is still a free beta, but by signing up to our Early Access Program, you’ll get a 20% discount when we release SSAS Compare as a fully-fledged product.   • A star algorithm implementation problems

    I’m having some trouble implementing the A* algorithm in a 2D tile based game. The problem is basically that the algorithm gets stuck when something gets in its direct way (e.g. walls) Note that it only allows Horizontal and Vertical movement.   • Multiple problems using BOINC in Ubuntu 12.04

    I installed Berkeley's BOINC software in Windows and I loved it, however I'm having the following problems using it in Ubuntu 12.04: 1) The software doesn't appear in the systray, only in the Unity dock (left side) 2) I can minimize BOINC to the dock but when I open and close other program it maximizes again, wich is very annoying 3) The software can't be closed, it only minimizes to the Unity dock, and nothing happens using right click and close either 4) The software doesn't start at startup or as a startup application 5) It doesn't have a screensaver like in Windows I know it's a lot a problems, but I hope they can be fixed, because I love to use this software, and knowing it's open-software it would be a shame it didn't run on Ubuntu like it should.

  • Is there any complications or side effects for changing final field access/visibility modifier from private to protected?

    I have a private final field in one class and then I want to address that field in a subclass. I want to change field access/visibility modifier from private to protected, so I don't have to call getField() method from subclass and I can instead address that field directly (which is more clear and cohessive). Will there be any side effects or complications if I change private to protected for a final field? UPDATE: from logical point of view, it's obvious that descendant should be able to directly access all predecessor fields, right? But there are certain constraints that are imposed on private final fields by JVM, like 100% initialization guarantee after construction phase(useful for concurrency) and so on. So I would like to know, by changing from private to protected, won't that or any other constraints be compromised?

  • Right-aligning button in a grid with possibly no content - stretch grid to always fill the page

    Hello people, I am losing my patience with this. I am working on a Windows Phone 7 application and I can't figure out what layout manager to use to achieve the following: Basically, when I use a Grid as the layout root, I can't make the grid to stretch to the size of the phone application page. When the main content area is full, all is well and the button sits where I want it to sit. However, in case the page content is very short, the grid is only as wide as to accommodate its content and then the button (which I am desperate to keep near the right edge of the screen) moves away from the right edge. If I replace the grid and use a vertically oriented stack panel for the layout root, the button sits where I want it but then the content area is capable of growing beyond the bottom edge. So, when I place a listbox full of items into the main content area, it doesn't adjust its height to be completely in view, but the majority of items in that listbox are just rendered below the bottom edge of the display area. I have tried using a third-party DockPanel layout manager and then docked the button in it's top section and set the button's HorizontalAlignment="Right" but the result was the same as with the grid, it also shrinks in size when there isn't enough content in the content area (or when title is short). How do I do this then? ==EDIT== I tried WPCoder's XAML, only I replaced the dummy text box with what I would have in a real page (stackpanel) and placed a listbox into the ContentPanel grid. I noticed that what I had before and what WPCoder is suggesting is very similar.   • Is there any open source DVD duplication software like Nero?

    Nero Essentials isn't working right and I wondered if there was anything open source that I could use. I need to duplicate a DVD that I have authored - not a data disc a "real" dvd (with vob files, etc.) CDBurnerXP did not have this. Or, if I create an .iso is that the same thing when I burn it back to my duplicate? Thanks.

  • ajaxSubmit and Other Code. Can someone help me determine what this code is doing?

    I've inherited some code that I need to debug. It isn't working at present. My task is to get it to work. No other requirements have been given to me. No, this isn't homework, this is a maintenance nightmare job. ASP.Net (framework 3.5), C#, jQury 1.4.2. This project makes heavy use of jQuery and AJAX. There is a drop down on a page that, when an item is chosen, is supposed to add that item (it's a user) to an object in the database. To accomplish this, the previous programmer first, on page load, dynamically loads the entire page through AJAX. To do this, he's got 5 div's, and each one is loaded from a jquery call to a different full page in the website. Somehow, the HTML and BODY and all the other stuff is stripped out and the contents of the div are loaded with the content of the aspx page. Which seems incredibly wrong to me since it relies on the browser to magically strip out html, head, body, form tags and merge with the existing html head body form tags. Is this code good? Is it working against .Net, and is that why we are having issues?

    Let's assume some things: Back-ups do run every X minutes, yet the things I save should be permanent. There's a firewall and virus scanner in place, yet there happens to be a zero day attack on me. I am using Windows. (Although feel free to append Linux / OS X parts to your answer) Here is the problem Any software can change anything inside my user folder. Tampering with the files could cost me my life, whether it's accessing / modifying or wiping them. So, what I want to ask is: Is there a permission-based way to disallow programs from accessing my files in any way by default? Extending on the previous question, can I ensure certain programs can only access certain folders? Are there other less obtrusive ways than using Comodo? Or can I make Comodo less obtrusive? For example, the solution should be proof against (DO NOT RUN): del /F /S /Q %USERPROFILE%
