  At times when we develop new features or functionality, we gradually "turn it on" to ensure a smooth transition and minimal impact for users. Instead of one big sudden change, we are able to control with the configuration aspects of the functionality that make it more or less intrusive to the user. This is all done in the same release/version of the software, so no software development changes are required (unless bugs turn up that need to be fixed). For example, initially we may only perform logging or analysis of data without acting upon it. Or we make something optional for a period of time before it becomes compulsory. The idea is that this reduces the potential for problems either on the technical side as well as unexpected changes by the user. The question is, is there a formal name for this approach?

• Kubuntu screensaver won't autostart

  Am using Ubuntu Lucid + kubuntu-desktop. NVidia works fine. Screensavers set to autostart & worked fine after initial install. Now screensaver attempted to start (brief flash of black only) but since quit doing that.. All screensavers work fine in Test mode. Is there a file entry that controls this?. kde/autostart is empty - should there be an entry here? Would the log files show up any relative errors? I am a newbie & the log info is way out of my league! Have not found any relative posts here or other forums. I would appreciate suggestions.

  Basically I want to develop a Address lookup(part of my project) using C# (and I can use SQL if necessary). I have a very large text file which have all the UK address and postcodes. Addresses needs to be looked up from this text file. For example, as soon as a user type in the first letter of the postcode it should list all the postcodes starting with that letter and as they type in further, the list should narrow down. Could you guys please how I can do this search very fast and list the results in a efficient way. If you guys know any methods and technologies pls do advice.

  I'm trying to develop a desktop application which is similar to CCleaner. But I'm having problems with R&D resources... I can't find good books about Windows Operating System Programming Topic Examples; Explaining Windows 7 (or even 8) registry. Which registry entry turn on/off "showing desktop icons" Or, What is Windows registry defrag?, How can you defrag registry?, How can you optimize windows startup for( Windows 7 ) etc. I googled my questions, find msdn-some stackoverflow topics etc. But I can't find a book about low-level explaining current windows 7 operating system... Tasks check every minute with a third party application through web services, retrieving data which is written in the database, then the data is forwarded to it's original destination. • Having trouble's understanding NIF model file format?

  I'm attempting too develop a 3rd party application to make it easy to import 3d model part's into my mod for skyrim the plan was to have a fileviewer and preview window of the nif model but since , I don't know what the NIF file format actually is or where to get the vertex data from it or the hole nine yards of parsing a text file in detail I'm at a lost what to do. I'm very good at C++ but not at this super over complicated file formats , id much prefer .obj over the nif file format specification here -- http://niftools.sourceforge.net/doc/nif/index.html If someone could help me in understanding the file format in a natural and simple way and the exact parsing needed to create the 3D Model in the frustum and a explanation on how you figured that out would be happy to know.   I have no experience as a programmer but I'd like to become a iPhone developer. Some people tell me to learn java because it is a Object Oriented Language. Other people tell me to go with C++. However, everyone advises me to actually learn any language and learn what programming is all about before I actually develop for iPhone.   My development env. is, Win7 Ultimate Ruby 1.9.2p180 Rails 3.0.9 Gem 1.8.5 sqlite3 and mysql2 gems are installed My IDE is netbeans 7.0. ruby plugin for netbeans 7.0 is installed. i want to create a new rails app thru netbeans. but it hangs at the process of 25%. does someone hit the same issue? Is there a solution? From the output, i can see the rails app file structures are created. I know some of you may suggest me to use linux to develop rails app. that's an option. but i am newer to linux. i'd like to use win7 at present.

• AntClassLoader bug exposed by forgetful NetBeans

  Many users have run into ClassNotFoundExceptions and NoClassDefFoundErrors after working with web services that target GlassFish while developing their projects in NetBeans. The issue usually appears as a dialog similar to this This can be pretty debilitating. The bug appears to be in the AntClassLoader, which is tickled by the wsimport ant task that ships with GlassFish 3.1.2. The fix is pretty simple: Upgrade the Metro bits that ship in 3.1.2 with bits that have had a patch applied. There are detailed instruction about installing the updated Metro bits onto GlassFish. This upgrade is probably useful for any install of GlassFish 3.1, but it is critically important for folks that develop web services from inside NetBeans and deploy them onto GlassFish 3.1.2.

• Error after installing Lubuntu 14.04 through liveUSB

  A friend asked me to install ubuntu on his toshiba NB 200 netbook to replace windows xp. I formatted the flash drive, ran an nb5sum check on the iso and after running netbootin , I checked the drive for errors. No problems so far. During the installation, while everything seemed normal, the installation regularly paused until I pressed a button or moved the mouse. After restarting, it doesn't boot and it starts a shell showing : "General error mounting filesystems A maintenance shell will now be started CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and reboot the system " Any ideas? Any help is appreciated!

Many seem to have gotten rid of java, so I would not like to develop for an environmet, that users do not have on their computers, and that they are not willing to install for security reasons.   From the perspective of a developer what do you consider to be the most important environmental factors or work place perks/policies that contribute to increase productivity? For example, my top four includes the following: No internet restrictions - Because honestly ever few hours I need a 15 min deload, which usually involves checking my gmail account and or browsing a few choice site. Personal office with a door - for obvious reasons Dual monitors - do people really develop software with one monitor still? Flexible hours - This could be interpreted in different ways, but basically I really appreciate that fact that I can roll into work at 7am, 11am or whenever and the time police aren't on my back. It is just understood that I will put in my 8 hours or more if needed and get my job done however that works out.

• Macbook 8.1 overheating

  I have a macbook 8.1 with ubuntu 12.04 installed. But my cpu is getting very hot. On Mac my CPU is 50-60°C warm. But on ubuntu my mac is getting very hot and is by about 60°C but with min 3000rpm instead of 2000 on mac and the fan is getting very loud with 4500rpm on ubuntu when im browsing (without flash) or doing something else. i set it to 3000rpm because it is not getting so noisy instead of 2000rpm minimum. But thats not that what im expected. What ive done: i installed lm-sensors to see the temperatures and started the sensors-detect i installed macfancld, jupiter, the newest drivers from x-updates and installed the i965-va-driver oh and i installed mesa - with the default version my sandbridge was displayed as unknown i added GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=force drm.vblankoffdelay=1 pcie_aspm=force drm.vblankoffdelay=1 i915.semaphores=1 i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.i915_enable_fbc=1" ive added rfkill block bluetooth to /etc/rc.local to switch of bluetooth by default on boot my mac is not as noisy as before but it is noisy and sometimes very hot i hope you can help me

Does anyone know what languages might have been used in earlier missions, especially the Mars PrOP-M rover missions of the early 1970s which were somewhat autonomous and could navigate obstacles?   When somebody did mention "PSY" during a dinner at OOW this year with customers and colleagues from Korea I was completely clueless. I even didn't understand correctly who or what "PSY" is. I did forget about that until last week as a German online magazine did report on over 500 mio youtube hits for "Gangnam Style". Well ... I didn't know that I've almost missed a global phenomenon. And now I've learned that the song is omnipresent in Korea (and not only here) - and Gangnam is a really nice (and expensive) quarter of Seoul not that far away from my hotel. And if you need some rest during your lunch break you may watch these youtube vids - but don't blame me if you don't get the song out of your head anymore ... Gangnam Style by PSY Eton Style - my personal favorite Jakarta Flash Mob - wow! And NO - that's not the type of music I'd usually listen to!!!

• Samsung NC10 Broadcom difficulties

  I am new to Ubuntu/Linux and am stuck already! Any help much appreciated. I have managed to install Ubuntu Maverick 10.10 (from a USB flash drive) on my NC10 which also has Windows 7 on the partitioned drive. But the wireless internet is not working. I have identified the hardware as a Broadcom BCM4313. I have also managed to find that the correct driver is installed (Modaliases for Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA driver). I have followed advice from elsewhere and there does not seem to be any competition from other drivers. I am now stuck and do not have any other internet access on this netbook. Any ideas?

I plan to develop a Python program that sends the URL of a given website to a virtual machine where the dynamic execution of the eventual malicious JavaScript embedded in the website's page is monitored. My questions: Should my VM be Windows or Linux ? What if the malware damages my VM: is there a hint how to avoid that ? Or launch a new VM automatically instead ?
