• How to convert none-Latin-based encoded text into UTF-8, or make them coexist on same page?

  Good day, I have a script that scrapes the title/description of remote pages and prints those values into a corresponding charset=UTF-8 encoded page. Here is the problem, whenever a remote page is encoded with non-Latin characters encoding like (Arabic, Russian, Chinese, Japanese etc.) the imported values print as garbled text. I've tried passing those values through either iconv or mb_convert_encoding converters but without much success. Then, I tried detecting the remote encoding first, then change my presentation page's encoding into the remote one instead of the current utf-8, which works okay with the imported values, but the other existing utf-8 content of that language on the page gets garbled instead. Example: If I try to import those values from a Russian windows-1251 into my UTF-8 encoded page which has a mix English/Russian content. I change the imported non-utf-8 string into a utf-8 using either iconv or mb_convert_encoding. I tried: $RemoteValue = iconv($RemoteEncoding, 'UTF-8', $RemoteValue); or $RemoteValue mb_convert_encoding($RemoteValue, "UTF-8", $RemoteEncoding); or $RemoteValue mb_convert_encoding($RemoteValue, "UTF-8", "auto"); without success. If I detect that the remote page is windows-1251 encoded and I change my presentation page (which already has UTF-8 encoded mixed language content) to be similar to the remote page, then the japanese utf-8 content on the existing page gets garbled... Can 2 differently encoded strings coexist on the same page (ex. utf-8 & windows-1251)? Am I using the converters correctly? any hints as to why they don't work? Is there any better way to do this? • Does posting data with a textarea automatically add slashes to (escape) the text?

  Ok, so I'm having a problem with a simple textarea. I'm using a kind of hidden page to easily encode some data using JSON. However, all of my text input is automatically being escaped somewhere and I don't know where. All of my $_POST variables are automatically run through the htmlentities() function when the script starts up, as seen below: $ani->i->post = $this->clean($_POST, true); function clean($values, $unset = false) { if (is_array($values)) { foreach ($values as $key => $value) { $newkey = strtolower($key); $return[$newkey] = $this->clean($value); unset($values[$key]); } return $return; } return htmlentities($values); } I keep getting \' for all of my single quotes when I put the value back into the textarea. I can't find anywhere where it would be adding slashes and I don't remember it being a feature that they were automatically added when you submit from a textarea, and if that was so, why would they not be returning back to a single quote when put back into the textarea? Do I really need to run variables through stripslashes() to get them back to their original form? • How to force the build to be out of date, when a text file is modified?

  The Scenario My project has a post-build phase set up to run a batch file, which reads a text file "version.txt". The batch file uses the information in version.txt to inject the DLL with a version block using this tool. The version.txt is included in my project to make it easy to modify. It looks a bit like this: @set #Description="TankFace Utility Library" @set #FileVersion="0.1.2.0" @set #Comments="" Basically the batch file renames this file to version.bat, calls it, then renames it back to version.txt afterwards. The Problem When I modify version.txt (e.g. to increment the file version), and then press F7, the build is not seen as out-of-date, so the post-build step is not executed, so the DLL's version doesn't get updated. I really want to include the .txt file as an input to the build, but without anything actually trying to use it. If I #include the .txt file from a CPP file in the project, the compiler fails because it obviously doesn't understand what "@set" means. If I add /* ... */ comments around the @set commands, then the batch file has some syntax errors but eventually succeeds. But this is a poor solution I think. So... how would you do it?

• Initial text and paperclipped-URL for action in UIActivityViewController & UIActivityItemSource?

  Finally been making it through Apple's (rather dismal) documentation on the new UIActivityViewController class and the UIActivityItemSource protocol, and I'm trying to send different data sets to different actions called from the activity view. To simplify things, I'm looking at two things. A Facebook posting action, which should say "Check this out!" and also attach a URL to the post (with that cute little paperclip). A Twitter posting action, which should say "Check this out, with #hashtag!" and also attach that same URL (with the same paperclip). It's relatively easy when calling the iOS 6 SL-class posting modals; you just call the individual methods to attach a URL or an image. How would I go about doing this here? I'll note that instead of returning NSString objects from -activityViewController:itemForActivityType, if I return just NSURL objects, they show up with that paperclip, with no body text in the post. If I return an array of those two items, nothing shows up at all.

• Conventions for the behavior of double or triple "click to select text" features?

  Almost any mature program that involves text implements "double click to select the word" and, in some cases, "triple click to select additional stuff like an entire line" as a feature. I find these features useful but they are often inconsistent between programs. Example - some programs' double clicks do not select the ending space after a word, but most do. Some recognize the - character as the end of a word, others do not. SO likes to select the entire paragraph as I write this post when I triple click it, VS web developer 2005 has no triple click support, and ultra-edit 32 will select one line upon triple clicking. We could come up with innumerable inconsistencies about how double and triple click pattern matching is implemented across programs. I am concerned about how to implement this behavior in my program if nobody else has achieved a convention about how the pattern matching should work. My question is, does a convention (conventions? maybe an MS or Linux convention?) exist that dictates how these features are supposed to behave to the end user? What, if any, are they?

• Editting CSS in iframe that sets Select tag's text color to black?

  This is a very specific question for a Google Chrome extension. http://www.meebo.com/mobile/ This page is where you're kicked to when you go to Meebo.com on an iPhone or Droid phone. But if you notice, the Status box where you can set yourself away or what you want your status to be has white text on a white background. In order to get a website to appear in a Google Chrome extension's popup window (the one that drops down when you click the icon next to the address bar) that isn't an included html file in the extension, I need to use an iFrame. I know that there's security measures about Cross-Site stuff like javascript and I'm not surprised I'm having trouble accessing the CSS. But there's a class, status, and it's color is white and I need to change that to black. I've tested it with Chrome's Inspect Element window and if I change that, I'll be fine. I've tried changing the manifest.json file to inject a CSS file using Content-Scripts, but nothing... I'm new to Chrome Extensions but I have experience doing web development.

  What I am trying to do is create some arbitrary sql command with parameters, set the values and types of the parameters, and then return the parsed sql command - with parameters included. I will not be directly running this command against a sql database, so no connection should be necessary. • Why might my PHP log file not entirely be text?

  I'm trying to debug a plugin-bloated Wordpress installation; so I've added a very simple homebrew logger that records all the callbacks, which are basically listed in a single, ultimately 250+ row multidimensional array in Wordpress (I can't use print_r() because I need to catch them right before they are called). My logger line is $logger->log("\t" . $callback . "\n"); The logger produces a dandy text file in normal situations, but at two points during this particular task it is adding something which causes my log file to no longer be encoded properly. Gedit (I'm on Ubuntu) won't open the file, claiming to not understand the encoding. In vim, the culprit corrupt callback (which I could not find in the debugger, looking at the array) is about in the middle and printed as ^@lambda_546 and at the end of file there's this cute guy ^M. The ^M and ^@ are blue in my vim, which has no color theme set for .txt files. I don't know what it means. I tried adding an is_string($callback) condition, but I get the same results. Any ideas?

In this configuration, every label nested in the box must be written in a single line. If the text is too long, then the overflow must be hidden. In my example, the third item will be displayed Another label, but a or Another label, but a .... When the cursor is entering the div box, the width of the box is modified (for example to 200px). In this configuration, the labels that were shorten in the first configuration are now displayed in the whole space. With my code snippet, the third label is displayed in two lines when the box has a 120px, and I do not want that... How can I achieve that? Note that I would be great if the solution works also for IE6! Even if I prefer a pure CSS/HTML solution, (simple) Javascript (and jQuery) is allowed!

• Should I use a binary or a text file for storing protobuf messages?

  Using Google protobuf, I am saving my serialized messaged data to a file - in each file there are several messages. We have both C++ and Python versions of the code, so I need to use protobuf functions that are available in both languages. I have experimented with using SerializeToArray and SerializeAsString and there seems to be the following unfortunate conditions: SerializeToArray: As suggested in one answer, the best way to use this is to prefix each message with it's data size. This would work great for C++, but in Python it doesn't look like this is possible - am I wrong? SerializeAsString: This generates a serialized string equivalent to it's binary counterpart - which I can save to a file, but what happens if one of the characters in the serialization result is \n - how do we find line endings, or the ending of messages for that matter? Update: Please allow me to rephrase slightly. As I understand it, I cannot write binary data in C++ because then our Python application cannot read the data, since it can only parse string serialized messages. Should I then instead use SerializeAsString in both C++ and Python? If yes, then is it best practice to store such data in a text file rather than a binary file? My gut feeling is binary, but as you can see this doesn't look like an option.

  As a freelancer, and previous Adobe trainer, I get a look-in at many development workflows and alternate styles of programming and design and therefore quite open to different workflows. But a recent post I had, I needed to use SQL - so I whipped out navicat and wrote a nice join statement. I had sniggering comments and sideways glances when I told the developers I was working with navicat, I preferred a GUI to bash and I prefer Aptana to notepad. I felt a little insulted and under skilled as I didn't want to sit in front of reams of spewing green text. I know and use the tools when required but I prefer more attractive, modern products. Have you guys had this? What do you do to overcome it - apart from using bash and notepad more? How do you subdue a developer who's being arrogant about his skill? And is it my fault? I hope this question is not subjective, I do feel like I am inferior to my peers due to it - so some advise would really help.

  I have a table, where I need to do a case insensitive search on a text field. If I run this query in LinqPad directly on my database, it works as expected Table.Where(tbl => tbl.Title.Contains("StringWithAnyCase")) // also, adding in the same constraints I'm using in my repository works in LinqPad // Table.Where(tbl => tbl.Title.Contains("StringWithAnyCase") && tbl.IsActive == true) In my application, I've got a repository which exposes IQueryable objects which does some initial filtering and it looks like this var dc = new MyDataContext(); public IQueryable<Table> GetAllTables() { var ret = dc.Tables.Where(t => t.IsActive == true); return ret; } In the controller (its an MVC app) I use code like this in an attempt to mimic the LinqPad query: var rpo = new RepositoryOfTable(); var tables = rpo.GetAllTables(); // for some reason, this does a CASE SENSITIVE search which is NOT what I want. tables = tables.Where(tbl => tbl.Title.Contains("StringWithAnyCase"); return View(tables); The column is defiend as an nvarchar(50) in SQL Server 2008. Any help or guidance is greatly appreciated!

• What's the best way to send user-inputted text via AJAX to Google App Engine?

  I'm developing in Google App Engine (python sdk) and I want to use jQuery to send an Ajax request to store an answer to a question. What is the best way to send this data to the server? Currently I have: function storeItem(question_id) { var answerInputControl = ".input_answer_"+question_id; var answer_text = $(answerInputControl).text(); $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: "store_answer.html", data: "question="+question_id, success: function(responseText){ alert("Retrieved: " + responseText); } }); } This takes a question Id and provides it to the server via the query string. But on the server-side, I'm unable to access the content of the answer control which I want to store. Without Ajax, I'm able to perform this operation with the following: class StoreAnswers(webapp.RequestHandler): def post(self): question_id = self.request.get("question_id") answer_text = self.request.get("input_answer" + question_id) But when doing this call through Ajax, my answer_text is empty. Do I need to send the contents of this control as part of the data with the Ajax request? Do I add the control itself to the query string? Its contents? Does it matter that the content might be a few hundred characters long? Is this the most-recommended practice? If sending it as a query string, what's the best way to escape the content so that a malicious user doesn't harm the system?

• best REGEXP friendly Text Editors + most powerful REGEXP syntax?

  I am fluent with Microsoft Visual 2005 regular expressions and they are a big time saver. I seem to learn them best by having a vaguely organized cheat sheet thrown at me, at which point I read just a little and play with them until I understand what's going on. That learning approach has worked well for me, for now. I would really like to take this to the next level though. Basically -- What is the REGEXP convention that is generally regarded as the most open-ended and powerful? VS2005 Regexps seem kind of gimped, so maybe I'm a kid playing in a sandbox. Are there text editors out there that can perform a highlight all matches, list lines containing string, or some kind of powerful function like that in conjunction with the very strongest REGEXP language? If not I can just use multiple programs and a weird technique but I'd like to avoid that. I wonder if a stronger REGEXP language or a "stronger" regEXP writer might be able to have his search match all results on all lines even by clicking a "find next" by adding some simple criteria to the search. Anyway, please provide advice!
