• mySQL Left Join on multiple tables with conditions

  Hi, I have a problem. I have 4 tables: Invoice_Payment, Invoice, Client, and Calendar Basically, I have the below query, which works well, except, months with no date_due don't return. I.E only months with a date_due will be returned. I think I have to use a left join and join the calendar table with something like: LEFT JOIN Calendar ON Invoice_Payments.date_paid = Calendar.date_field. But I'm having no luck SELECT MONTHNAME(Invoice_Payments.date_paid) as month, SUM(Invoice_Payments.paid_amount) AS total FROM Invoice, Client, Invoice_Payments WHERE Client.registered_id = 1 AND Client.id = Invoice.client_id And Invoice.id = Invoice_Payments.invoice_id AND date_paid IS NOT NULL GROUP BY YEAR(Invoice_Payments.date_paid), MONTH(Invoice_Payments.date_paid) Any help appreciated.

• Mysql: Convert DB from local time to UTC

  I need to convert an existing (datetime fields) db from local time ut UTC. The values are stored ad datetimes on a server with time zone CET (+1) (with summertime +2). When selecting data I use UNIX_TIMESTAMP(), which magically compensates for everything, ie, time zone shift and dst (if i've read the docs right). I'm moving the db to a new server with UTC as system time. Simply subtracting -1 H won't work, as summer time is +2. Any ideas for a clever way to do this? (using sql or some script lang)

• Two models, one STI and a Validation

  Let's say I have two tables -- Products and Orders. For the sake of simplicity assume that only one product can be purchased at a time so there is no join table like order_items. So the relationship is that Product has many orders, and Order belongs to product. Therefore, product_id is a fk in the Order table. The product table is STI -- with the subclasses being A, B, C. When the user orders subclass Product C, two special validations must be checked on the Order model fields order_details and order_status. These two fields can be nil for all other Product subclasses (ie A and B). In other words, no validation needs to run for these two fields when a user purchases A and B. My question is: How do I write validations (perhaps custom?) in the Order model so that the Order model knows to only run the validations for the two fields -- order_details and order_status -- when Product subclass C is being saved to the orders table?

• Tool(s) to lower the friction of programming against Interfaces in Visual Studio C#?

  Hi I am a relatively new user of Visual Studio and I am trying "program against interfaces". I can see that when I create a class I can "Extract Interface" from the Refactor menu but you seem to only get one shot at this. ie. If I add a read only property FullName to my Customer class I would like to be able to right click and update the interface. At the moment I can only create a new interface from the Refactor menu. I want to update the interface I have already created not create new one. So the kind of tool I would be looking for would display check boxes for all valid members of the class with those already in the interface checked. It would also be handy to be able to to create the initial interface file in a different project (in the same solution), and for the tool to keep track of this. Does such a tool / add in / menu item exist (other than Ctrl C / V)? Thanks, John

  Hello guys, I was hoping someone can shed some light on what might be occurring on my page. Okay what I currently have on my page is a simple form that collects first name, last name, city, state and email. Once submitted it will hit a PHP page that updates our DB and echo's back to the designted div with a class of .response. I am using jquery.validation and placing that dynamic function within the submitHandler like so: submitHandler: function(form) { $(form).ajaxSubmit({ target: '.response', // target element(s) to be updated with server response resetForm: true, success: function() { $('#commentform').hide(); $('.response').show(); } }); So what I am getting is a div that is not being populated with the echo from my php file in FF and in IE I am getting the message of thank you but the page is taking me to the update.php script in which I have the form action pointing to. • What should I grab as a development platform, an iPod or an iPad?

  Hey all, I've recently gotten into the world of contract programming, and two of my clients have indicated that they'd like to do something 'trendy', like ipod touch/iphone/ipad development. I have a mac laptop (first gen macbook pro) that I'll have to upgrade to snow leopard to do the development for any of them, from what I've read. So that's already a bit of a commitment, given all the stuff I have on that laptop I'll have to make sure is recoverable from backup. My budget is limited, but I think I need to learn this skill. Which device should I get to learn this kind of development, an iPod touch or an iPad? I don't have the money for an iPhone. I think that the iPhone/iPad SDK has an emulator mode, but I like to have the device I'm going to roll out on available to make sure that everything works as I'd expect, ie, what's easily readable on a laptop screen is still readable on the touch, etc.

  I am currently doing visual c++ for an Internet Explorer toolbar button. I have a registration script file (*.rgs) that defines or maybe register the features of my button inside the Windows registry. My objective is, I want my button to change its *.ico image, based on certain conditions process from my *.cpp file. My problem is, I don't understand, how can I somehow change the *.ico file for my button in real time, during my application is running? For example, IF f = 1, ico_file = green.ico; ELSE ico_file = red.ico; Any idea, that you guys can point to me, how can I change the *.ico file for my Internet Explorer toolbar button while the IE is running.

• Page doesn't un-cache itself in ASP.NET C#

  Hi, I sometimes find that I need to press CTRL+REFRESH BUTTON (or simply REFRESH BUTTON) in order for pages to be updated. I thought this may have been a problem with using AJAX Update Panel and things, but it also happens on pages where there is no AJAX partial rendering. I have also removed if(!isPostBack), and yet still I need to refresh the page for the contents to be updated. Is it to do with the cache? Does anyone know of a fix for this? I believe it only happens with IE 7 (which I am using). I tried the same feature with Chrome, and it worked as it is supposed to.

• Removing a result from Queryset

  Is there a simple way to discard/remove the last result in a queryset without affecting the db? I am trying to paginate results in Django, but don't know the total number of objects for a given query. I was planning on using next/previous or older/newer links, so I only need to know if this is the first and/or last page. First is easy to check. To check for the last page I can compare the number of results with the pagesize or make a second query. The first method fails to detect the last page when the number of results in the last set equals the pagesize (ie 100 records get broken into 10 pages with the last page containing exactly 10 results) and I would like to avoid making a second query. My current thought is that I should fetch pagesize + 1 results from the db. If the queryset length equals 11, I know this is not the last page and I want to discard the last result in the queryset before passing the queryset to the template.

• Automated testing of a website for IE7 javascript errors?

  This week I decided to add a new element to a javascript array by copying a similar one from a previous line; unfortunately I forgot to remove the comma so the end result was something like var a = [1, 2, 3,]. The code went live late Friday afternoon just before everyone left for the week-end, and it completely broke everything in Internet Explorer 7 (and lower I assume) since it's such a great browser. Since there was no one to read emails (week-end) it went unnoticed for quite a while, and I really don't want something like this to happen again (especially in my code).. This is not the first of weird IE7 problems; I was wondering if there was a way to automatically test key pages looking for javascript or css errors, or really anything that IE8 would output in its new console in development tools. If there isn't, what do you usually do? You test the website after every change with all the browsers you support? (Something I'll do from now, at least for IE, if there is no way to run automated tests)

  In the Script documents that asp.net automatically generates how can I surround the whole generated scripts with try/catch statement to avoid 'Microsoft JScript Compilation error' My issue is: i got a DevExpress control (ASPxGridView) that added and set-up in run time, since i activated the grouping functionality in the grid I still get JS error says ';' expected whenever i use (click) on one of grouping/sorting abilities, I activated script Debugging for IE, in the JS code turns out that there is no missing ';' and once i click ignore for the error msg that VS generates every thing works fine, and surly end-user can't see this msg so i figured out if i try/catch the script that may help avoid this error. • Footer issue in IE6 & 7

  Hi At the following site http://www.r2integrated.com/clients/FMX/index.html In IE 6 & 7 the footer's background should be grey; outside of the white box. It looks correct in firefox, chrome & IE8, but not IE6 & 7 the footer's background is white and inside the box. I have tried many things with no luck. I wonder if anyone can offer suggestions? thank you chaser

• Adding data (not only text) to a multi column ListView (WPF)

  I am working on a WPF application in C# (.NET 4.0) where I have a ListView with a GridView that has two columns. I dynamically want to add rows (in code). My dilemma is that only the first column will have regular text added to it. The second column will have an object that includes a multi column Grid with TextBlocks. (see link http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/803/listview.png/) If I do what you would normally do when you want to enter text in all columns (ie. DisplayMemberBinding) all I get in the second column is the text "System.Windows.Grid", which obviously isn't what I want. For reference if I just try to add the Grid object (with the TextBlocks) with the code listView1.Items.Add(grid1) (not using DisplayMemberBinding) the object gets added to the second column only (with the first column being blank) and not how it normally works with text where the same text ends up in all columns. I hope my question is detailed enough and any help with this would be much appreciated. EDIT: I have tried the following code, howeever every time I click the button to add a new row every single row gets updated with the same datatemplate. • To what point is making an HTML page valid worth it?

  Since a long time ago, when I found out about the W3C Validator, I made sure every HTML document I made was valid HTML. However, I think sometimes it just isn't necessary to waste time making it valid. Of course, for actual Internet pages may be important, but is making pages on an Intranet, or even little front-ends that are used with other programs, when the HTML page renders correctly in the most used browsers (not necessarily counting IE 6 and 7). I think I'm mostly talking about little improvements over code, such as wrapping every shown element of the page on <p> or <div> tags.

• Passing parameters thru Ruby's OAuth

  I'm using Mirven's Twitter OAuth Sinatra example and trying to figure out how I can send a 'next page' parameter with the Oauth request: ie. The user attempts to visit /edit/profile which requires a login so I redirect to /request which deals with login via twitter - I now want to be able to redirect the user to the address they were originally looking for if they log in successfully. I thought I could do this in the .get_request_token line with this code: @request_token = @consumer.get_request_token({:oauth_callback => "http://#{request.host}/auth"},{:next => params['next'] || '/'}) But params has no additional items in the /auth handler. I'm new to OAuth, how would I go about doing this?

• Can I add an additional eula/tos inside my app on top of the iphone app store agreement

  I have an app that allows users to generate and publish content. I would like to possibly be able to use the content they publish/create to make derivative works, ie books etc (similar to what icanhazcheeseburger has done.) If I were to put an opt in alert to ask the user whether or not they would like to be a part of this, would this violate the iphone sdk? I know this is not programming question so I'm not sure if this is a fair question, but I thought I heard something like you can't add a eula you have to abide by whatever apple dictates in their app store agreement. Also if you have suggestions on different ways to approach getting users to agree to this I'm all ears, but yes that is kind of subjective. Thanks folks, Nick

• How do you fix the Silverlight application shift that occurs in the Firefox browser?

  Hi, Currently I have an Silverlight application that when run on Firefox browser (ver 3.6) the entire contents of the Silverlight application shifts a little, and also the scrollbars on both the bottom and the side appear when I first use it. This does not happen in IE 8. How can I fix this in Firefox so it doesn't happen? The project type I created was the "Silverlight 3 Application + Website" via Expression Blend 3. • DynaCache invalidation in clustered environment

  We are using Horizontal cluster in our PROD with WAS 6.1 as the Application server. We have enabled dynacache service for some of the JSP fragments using SHARED-PUSH in cachespec.xml file. Now we want to do cache invalidation programmatically..ie. whenever something changes in DB related to cache the cache should get invalidated. so can you please let me know what steps are involved in it to achieve this? any configuration settings at server side or any development changes.

  Hi Ok dealing with Partial Loops I want to do several things Perhaps pass in extra variables - seen it done like this echo $this-partialLoop('Loop.phtml', array('data' = $data, 'var1' = foo)); But this does not seem to work - I can not extra the data using $this-var $this-data-var or $data-var not sure how to access the data in the loop Sutotals for columns - need a way of resetting variables or passing in a default value - linked to the above I suppose ie $subtotal += rowTotal; In the view that calls the partial I would like to get access to the subtotal values generated so I can display these in another table below. Any help appreciated the docs on partialLoop seems incomplete. Ian

• Does Android support near real time push notification

  I recently learned about the ability of iPhone apps to receive nearly instantaneous notifications to apps. This is provided in the form of push notifications, a bespoke protocol which keeps an always on data connection to the iPhone and messages binary packets to the app, which pops up alerts incredibly quickly, between 0.5 - 5 seconds from server app send to phone app response time. This is sent as data - rather than SMS - in very very small packets charged as part of the data plan not as incoming messages. I would like to know if using Android there is either a similar facility, or whether it's possible to implement something close to this using Android APIs. To clarify I define similar as: Not an SMS message, but some data driven solution As real time as is possible Is scalable - ie: as the server part of a mobile app, I could notify thousands of app instances in seconds I appreciate the app could be pull based, HTTP request/response style, but ideally I don't want to to be polling that heavily just to check for notification .. besides which it's like drip draining the data plan.

• List the names of existing directories from .tgz file in a bash variable

  I would like to find all the directories that are in a .tgz file and that already exist on the system and put the result in a bash variable. I have tried this: EXISTING=`for f in \`tar tzf $ARCHIVE\`; do if [ -d "/tmp/unpacked-data/\$f" ]; then echo \$f; fi; done` with no luck. If I echo the value of $f before the if in the loop, I get all the files, ie this works: EXISTING=`for f in \`tar tzf $ARCHIVE\`; do echo \$f; done` Can someone tell me why the \$f doesn't work in the if statement? • Google groups not finding discussion thread but regular google search does?

  I'm having a problem with google groups and finding my own discussion threads. I go to the google group (in my case Android developer group) web view and try to search for my thread by entering the extact title of my thread. But it doesn't appear in the search results. On the other hand, when I search for the same title in the regular google web search, I get the thread right on top of the result list. I thought it might take a while until the groups index all new threads, but still after a few days, it still wouldn't show up. • Creating a "netbeans property" style dialog box

  Hi I've been trying to create a GUI using netbeans, that includes a dialog similar to Netbean's own "property dialog" that appears when designing. ie. a dialog that contains a table that can be expanded by tree nodes. Something like the dialog on this page, http://platform.netbeans.org/tutorials/nbm-property-editors.html As far as I can understand, the page I linked to describes a custom editor I can set up for use within netbeans while designing - I'm just looking for a way to doing something similar for my actual application I'm writing. Is there an easy way to do this?
