• Hardware issue: UI freezes and hard drive light goes solid several times per hour

  I have a workstation that has been acting up for the last few weeks. It currently has Windows Server 2008 R2 installed on it, and 2 HDD mirrored. A few times per hour the screen will freeze up, applications will say "not responding", sometimes the screen will turn a lighter shaded color--at the same time the HDD light is on solid. This lasts anywhere from 10 to about 50 seconds. Could this be something with one of the drives or the mechanism keeping the mirror in place? Any other ideas?

• Problem importing pictures from a digital camera with Windows 7

  Hi, Since I'm using Windows 7 (Beta, then RC, now RTM), I have issues when I download pictures from my digital cameras. It happens with my 2 cameras: a Canon Powershot S2 IS and a Canon Ixus 80 IS. When I plug a camera (any of them) to a USB port and switch it on in Play mode, the Autoplay function of Windows 7 starts with this screen: I select "Import pictures and videos" to call the native Windows 7 tool. It searches a bit for pictures to download from the camera and starts the transfer. However, during the transfer, I often get errors like this one: If I use "Try again", it works fine the second time and the picture is retrieved correctly. It's very annoying when it happens 20 or 30 times in a 500-picture download. I cannot leave it running standalone, as I have to watch for the errors and click on "Try again". Any idea what is causing these errors? I tried changing the USB port (normally the cameras are connected via a USB hub but it happens also when I connect them directly to a MB USB port) and the USB cable, but no success. I also checked the SD card by connecting them with a card reader and running a ChkDsk on them but it found no errors on the cards. Update: No problem when I copy the pictures manually with the Windows Explorer. And no problem either when I access the card with a reader. The builtin import tool of Windows is convenient as it sorts the pictures automatically by date (1 folder per day). And this is the way I sort my pictures

  the issue is this Undo the CLEAN command on the portable hdd : DISKPART unfortunately at step no 10, i dont see the option to save the partition table.but there are options for: deeper search quit write a partition. wat should i do?plz help(i run testdrive 6.14) here is how this happened... I ran cmd then diskpart then selected the volume used 'CLEAN' command to clear the configuration (accidentally) does reinstalling my windows solve this ? will my hard drive work on other computers?

• Dual boot OSX and Windows 7 natively

  I'm considering getting one of those new fancy Mac Book Pro's with the fancy screens, but after reading some stuff on the internets about running Windows 7 with bootcamp: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2770866?start=0&tstart=0 It seems you can't use the integrated graphics with windows, this causes windows to chew the battery life: I am afraid it is not possible. Since Apple introduced dual graphics chip laptops, they kept the low power/embedded GPU hidden under Window and they expose only the power hungry discrete GPU. It feels that this is being done on purpose so that it appears to users that OS X offers a better experience and battery life over Windows. So running bootcamp and windows kills the battery, running in parallels means you don't get accelerated 3d support (or something along those lines), so you don't get the performance out of it. I'm wondering: Is it possible to natively dual boot Windows 7 on a MBP, and if so would/does that give windows access to the integrated graphics to be able to not rape the battery?

  My microphone input is very quiet. I record my voice and the recording comes out very faint. I can barely see the level indicator move when I'm 4 inches away, only when I'm 0.5 inches away does it pick up well enough. • Test disk recovery

  I had a 250GB hard disk having several NTFS partitions. The disk was a dynamic disk (created in windows). Now when I formatted windows (which was in another disk), the dynamic disk is shown as offline. I tried using the testdisk tool to recover the data and created a partial backup. Testdisk is able to list all partitions in the disk. All partitions are shown as type 'D' (Deleted). I want to change the 'D' to 'P' (Primary), 'L'(Logical), 'E' (Extended) appropriately and build a new partition table. If I can write the partition table to disk, the disk will be of 'basic' type and should be readable in all OS. What should be the appropriate partition types? I checked the files on the partitions and no OS was ound. So none of the partitions were bootable. Will randomly selecting P,L,E hurt the data in anyway?

  In order to lengthen the lifespan of my machine I am replacing the weakest link, the hard drive and installing a new OS. I had planned on using xp pro as my virtualbox host and ubuntu as guest. After messing with ubuntu desktop and server I am really impressed and am thinking of reversing the virtualbox setup; ubuntu host xp guest. I would use XP for Adobe Fireworks, Netflix, and iTunes (maybe) that's pretty much it. Any reason not to do ubuntu host with xp guest? I know the xp vbox will run slower as a guest but really how much slower? It's a desktop. 4gb ram, 500gb disk, Pent D 3.2 ghz

  On windows, when I plugged in the usb connector, to the device was recognized as a mass storage device and installed all the drivers, to my computer, then the device, automatically restarted and started behaving like a modem, I'm writing this post, using the same modem, through windows... On linux mint (debian kernel, similar to ubuntu 8.10), the device is recognized as a mass storage device, some times, but, has no programs, useful for linux... When I use the modem on windows and restart the computer and login to linux, the device shows up as "not yet configured" in the terminal command "lsusb"... I googled a lot for solutions, tried many things, atlast, configured it and run the command "wvdial". But, get the error, that the modem is not responding, at last ! :'( Please help me out... Many more people are facing this problem, as I could discover, when I googled for it. this is the website address of huawei, the company of my modem...   Is there an alt-tab replacement for windows that works in the same manner as command-tab and command-tick on OS X? example of what I'd like to do: If I hit alt-tab, I'd like to switch between open applications, rather than all windows currently open. If I hit alt-tick, I'd like to switch between open windows of the same application. VistaSwitcher is almost there, in that it allows you to alt-tick switch between windows of the same app. So if I have 4 firefox windows open and one of them is my active window, I can alt-tick to switch between those 4 while ignoring any other open apps. However, VistaSwitcher's alt-tab functionality is similar to stock Windows alt-tab, where you cycle through all open windows, regardless of whether there are multiple instances of certain applications.

• Application Event Log keeps getting corrupted

  I recently asked about repairing a corrupt event log, because it seemed to be a one-off event. The event log has since exhibited the same behavior 3 times. We have been trying to find patterns, but so far we have found nothing. The server runs several ASP.NET applications and three scheduled tasks written in .NET. The last modified date of the event log once happened to be the same time as one of the scheduled tasks, but the others have not been. Any suggestions of where to look next or a way we can get any information out of a corrupt evtx file? The server is running critical e-commerce applications, so we want to keep the number of restarts required to a minimum. • How to hide a partition?

  I bought a small 32 GB SSD to store the operating system (Windows 7) and my applications. I'll copy the existing boot partition (30 GB) from my harddisk (WD Velociraptor) to the SSD using GParted but I'd like to keep the existing partition intact (keeping all data on it) so I can go back to it if there is a problem with the SSD. How can I hide the partition so it is not visible anymore to Windows? What should I change with GParted? Second question: how can I keep the harddisk partition synced with the SSD so I have a backup? I'm looking for a near real-time solution (not something like Acronis Drive Image).

• How can I recover [data from] my failing USB key?

  I have a Corsair Flash Voyager USB key, and it's almost completely failed. When I plug it into my [WinXP] computer, the OS mounts it and open up explorer to the drive's root directory. However, if I try to copy any data off, I get an error message saying that the device is not there. If I leave it plugged in, the OS seems to oscillate between seeing it and not seeing it, since the "Safely Remove Hardware" tray icon appears and disappears every few seconds. The damage was probably caused by my abuse, either from plugging it in with my keys hanging off of it or from losing the cap and keeping it in my pocket uncapped. Is there anything I can do to save the data from it or even rehabilitate the drive?

  Just bought a new HP pavilion desktop with Windows 8. I wish to totally remove Windows 8 and all data on the hard drive, remove any windows partitions, delete all data, and then install a fresh Linux. Problem is I can seem to get to boot from USB or boot from CD. It appears that Windows 8 added the following two "features": UEFI which substitutes what we have known as the BIOS Secure Boot which prevents anything but the installed operating system How do I completely and totally erase all traces of Windows 8? Is it still possible to reformat the hard drive? I don't want a duel boot, I don't want to go back to Windows 7, I just want anything Windows gone.

• Installation of 11.10 on new drive (no OS)

  I have a Dell Dimension 600 XPS Phoenix BIOS version A03, the original HD crashed and burned. Dell didn't send OS disks (was on the original drive and no back up disks), so I am trying to install Ubuntu 11.10 on the new drive. The new drive is a Western Digital 1TB. I formatted the new drive by putting it in an enclosure and formatting it with Windows 7 on my HP system. When I put the cd in the cdrom it boots to the cd with the Advanced user screen (won't boot into the usually Windows GUI). When I try to install (or run from live Cd) I get the same error message. Same with trying the various boot options. The message is: VFS: cannot open root device "(NULL)" or unknown-block(8,1) Please append a correct "root=" boot option: Here are the available partitions: Kernal Panic- not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount rootfs on unknown-block(8,1) and then it lists Trace messages then freezing. Any help or suggestions are appreciated in advance.

  I have 1 GB hard drive. First all of its contents were gone after a virus got in (when I have the drive to someone else). After research found that it was a virus may be. I run Nortan antivus and removed certain virus. Then ran malewarebytes, now ad-aware and avg 2011 antivirus. Now i could see the files on my other computer. But now I have hooked this to my new macbook pro (windows installation) and i can't see the files. The antivurs does find all the files. MacOSX wrote a 400 MB directory there which i can see but nothing else. How to fix this? Which program will fix it?

(Implying that ALL of them are "formatting methods"... even #3) Reformat using NTFS (quick) Reformat using NTFS Leave the current file-system intact (no changes) What choice #3 really mean? Does it mean: A. Leave the current file-system (whatever file-system is already in use) and reformat to match that. (ie. If you current have NTFS, reformat to that again. If you currently have FAT32, reformat to that again. That is: Reformat without changing to a different file-system. Leave the current type.) or... B. Do absolutely nothing. Don't format. Don't delete any of my files. Abort the formatting process entirely.

  I am trying to install linux on my laptop, a Toshiba Satellite C6550-S5200. I did it once but something happened so I removed it then I had to destroy all data on hard drive so now I have nothing on it. Well I got a iso file burned to a CD and to a flash drive. With the flash drive I get. SYSLINUX 4.06 EDD 4.06-pre7 Copyright (C) 1994-2012 H. Peter Anvin et al With the CD it will start booting it but somewhere loading it up, the dots turn all orange and stay that way and my CD drive turns quiet. Oh and some more info the images work because I tried loading them up on another pc and it worked just fine.
