• Is it dangerous to add/remove a hard-drive to a Windows machine which is in stand by?

  Can I add a SATA drive to a Windows 7 machine which is in standby mode? The hardware supports hot-plug. Could pulling the drive out while in standby corrupt the data on the drive (unflushed caches, ...)? Does Windows flush before standing by? How about swapping a drive with another drive of different kind (SSD - mechanical disk) and size, also while in stand-by. Could the OS when waking up believe that the old drive is still there, and write to it and thus corrupt it, since the new one has different partitions and data?

• Converting to a mac-book pro for multi disciplined development.

  Hi all, I am in a bit of a bind. I have been contracted to create a small suite of applications for Android, iOS and WP7. Currently I am also on the market for a new notebook for development. Now the issue I have is I can either buy a consumer grade macbook and a laptop or I could just buy an 8gb Ram, SSD, i7 mackbook and virtualise windows 7. I have never used a mac or macbook before so before I go purchase anything I would like to know what your thoughts are on this. Has anyone any experience with this?

  I'm pretty new to Ubuntu and I'm having some troubles mounting my drive or getting it to detect media. • cannot boot ubuntu 13.10 with my usb, Can i change the kernal on my laptop to run it?

  Currently i am running 12.04 and looking for an upgrade to 13.10 I first tried a bootable 64bit usb and failed. With the message saying "Kernal requires an x86-64 CPU but only detected an I686 CPU Unable to boot please use a kernal appropriate for your CPU" then tried 32bit and same message came up. Is this due to my laptop simply being to slow? or can/should i change the kernal somehow? • How to mount drive in /media/userName/ like nautilus do using udisks

  As of my current installation of Ubuntu 13.10 Unity, when i click on a drive in nautilus it get mounted in /media/username/mountedDrive i read that nautilus use udisks to do that. • Replace gvimext.dll in Windows 8

  How can I get the "Edit with ... using tabs" functionality in gVim on Windows 8 (64-bit)? I'd like to swap out gVim's stock gvimext.dll for one that adds an "Edit with ... using tabs" option to Explorer's right-click context menu. On Windows 7 (64-bit) I used to be able to download the DLL and swap it in by following these instructions. However, I can't get it to work in Windows 8. The stock installation's context menu (sans "... using tabs") works fine (without a restart) ...but after replacing the DLL the gVim context menu options disappear and the gvimext.dll no longer seems to even load. (Windows 8 was restarted) if I again replace gvimext.dll with a backup of the stock DLL, the context menu options remain missing and the DLL still seems to fail to load (Windows 8 was restarted, again) If I re-install gVim, the context menu items return (even without a restart) What is the difference here between Windows 7 (where swapping DLL's works) and Windows 8 (where swapping DLL's fails)?

• Is it safe to compress my Windows 7 %USERPROFILE%\AppData folder?

  Having just read Scott Hanselman's latest blog entry, Guide to Freeing up Disk Space under Windows 7, he suggests turning on NTFS compression which I already do for a number of less travelled folders that contain static files such as downloads or images. However I am wondering if it's wise to turn on NTFS compression for the whole of my %USERPROFILE%\AppData folder? My system drive is a 128 GB SSD residing in a Dell Precision T5400 3Ghz Quad Core Xeon workstation so I ought not to notice the extra cycles used to compress and decompress files on their way to and from the disk. However would there be any good reasons not to do this? In fact could I safely compress the whole of my %USERPROFILE% folder?

• Get the Windows 7 Start Menu Back in Windows 8 with Classic Shell

  I just thought I’d give readers a heads up that you can use Classic Shell to get the old Windows 7 style of start menu back instead of using the new crappy Windows 8 metro start screen; plus it’s free and open source .  You can still access the metro start screen with Shift+WindowsKey or Shift clicking the start menu button.  This program also defaults to showing the desktop on startup instead of the metro start screen (but that can be disabled), and is super configurable and has tons of options to tweak it just the way you want if you are picky like me   The only thing I would say is when installing the app, only install the Classic Start Menu; you don’t need the other ones. • My hard disk does't get recognized

  For a few days now I have a problem with my 500GB internal hard disk. I am on Linux Mint 13 but I have the same problem with my Windows installation. When running fdisk -l I can see my hard disk (same on BIOS) but I can't mount it even via the disk utility program. In Windows XP I can see it on the My Computer menu but when I click it, it say's: D:\ is not accessible The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable Is there a way to fix it? Or at least save some of my files and format it? Should I be thinking about the worst-case scenario e.g. my HDD is dead? Edit: The filesystem is NTFS.

• Auto mount USB drive with permissions for all users

  I have an Ubuntu 14.04 based Media Center and I store the media files on a USB HDD. I add files to drive directly on a Mac so I have it formatted as FAT32. The problem is that after reconnecting the drive to the Ubuntu, it mounts at /media/user/drivename and only the root user is allowed access. I need several applications to have full access to this drive. I can change file permissions in the terminal but it doesn't change because of the /media/user location. I am able to manually sudo mount /dev/sdc1 /media/drivename & sudo chmod 777 /media/drivename but the mount point changes each time. Is there a way to make this drive always mount where root and other applications have access?

• What power cord does a WD16001032 hard drive use?

  I have a Western Digital 160GB My Book USB external hard drive (WD16001032), but I can't find its power cord (or, at least, figure out which one it is in my box of cords). It might be that only one power cord would fit, but I'm a bit cautious since I just tried one of the cords with a router and could smell electronics burning when I used an incorrect one. What voltage/amps are needed for this drive? I can't find specs on Western Digital's site. I'm assuming this is due to it being an older drive.

  Possible Duplicate: Securely erasing all data from a hard drive In my personal collection are an increasing number of relatively new drives, only put on the shelf due to upgrades; in the past I have never sold hard drives with used machines for fear of having the encrypted password databases that have been stored on them compromised, but as their numbers increase I find myself more tempted to do so (due to the $$$ I know they're worth on the used market). What tools then exist to make the recovery of data from said drives difficult to the extent that selling them could be justified? Another way of saying this would be: what tools/method exist for making the attempts at recovery of any data previously stored on a certain drive impractical? I assume that it is always possible to recover data from a drive that is in working order. I assume also there are some methods for preventing recovery of data due a program called dban, and one particular feature in macOSX that deals with permanently deleting data from a disk.

• Windows 7 System Image Restore to SSD - SSD not detected?

  I recently bought a new SSD (OCZ Vertex 2 120GB) as a replacement for my laptop HDD . I created a System Image on an external drive using the Win 7 backup and restore tool and then restored this image to the SSD using the Win 7 disk. AHCI is enabled in Win 7 and the BIOS, but it seems that windows is not detecting the disk as an SSD because, in the defragger, the disk is still available for defragging. Prefetch and Superfetch were also still enabled. I have manually disabled scheduled defragging, prefetch and superfetch. I have also checked that TRIM is enabled using: fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify and the result is '0' (it is). Performance seems ok, but not quite as fast as I expected. Was restoring from a win7 generated system image a mistake? Am I getting optimal SSD performance?

• Boost Up My Old Laptop Using a SSD

Since I can't afford to buy a new laptop, I thought maybe I could throw an ADATA SP600 64GB SSD as primary drive and move my current HDD to DVD-ROM space by using HDDCADDY. I know that 64gb will come short after installing Visual Studio, SQL Server, etc. So is there anyway to just install the kernel part of windows on SSD and the rest on HDD. Doesn't windows have built-in support to do this? (ReadyBoost is out of picture since it's just simple caching)

• Windows 7 boot error

  I am running windows 7 professional, everything was working fine until I installed a software driver clearner suggested by nvidia customer service and I cleaned only nvidia graphic driver installation since then my windows does not work at all. I can access everything from startup repair, did lots of time repair but nothing happened. System restore does not work it says c: drive is not available, its 100% there and I can access every file from command prompt. Almost two days passed and I applied every solution discussed on several forums, now only thing left is either install fresh windows (Which i really don't want to do) or update windows (which windows does not let me to do, it says I have to update it from windows) My question is there any way to update (not fresh/custom installation) windows from command prompt? P.s: Safe mode, safe mode command nothing works except startup repair option. I ran sfc /scannow no problem found. I also removed all attached hardwares. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have found that FAT32 might be an option, but as a video editor I often deal with files over the 4 GB limit. And since Mac doesn't read NTFS (very well with third-party programs) I'm considering FAT32. I'm curious, what happens when you try to write a file that is over 4 GB? What is a good way around this?

I don't know what to do... :/ P.S.: I've created a partition with the Ubuntu installer. My hard disk drive is 250 gb (there around) and the partition is 30gb big...   Some time ago I mapped a network drive on my Snow Leopard Mac, which was upgraded to Lion. The network drive is not active any more and I receive popups all the time with the error: There was a problem connecting to the server XXXX. I have no idea how I configured at the time. I may have included a mount command, in a config file but I don't know any more where I did it. I reviewed the Preferences/Account/Login items and there is no permanent mapping there. OSX is updated as Nov 27,2011 and the issue is not related to the upgrade to Lion itself but to a misconfiguration. Any help will be greatly appreciated.   I have Adobe CS5 installed and running on the Windows 7 side of my machine. Since I'd hate to boot up into Windows just to use Photoshop, I'm trying to get it in Ubuntu 12.04. Tutorials I found suggested that the easiest way to have it in Ubuntu was to install Wine, and copy my Windows installation over. Here are the exact steps I've done up to this point. From Windows, exported the registry key for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Adobe to the desktop. Changed to Ubuntu, downloaded Wine from Software Center Terminal: $ sudo apt-get install wine ttf-mscorefonts-installer $ winecfg $ wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks $ sh winetricks msxml6 gdiplus gecko vcrun2005sp1 vcrun2008 msxml3 atmlib Moved registry export to home folder. So to restate my question, How can I get Photoshop running in Ubuntu 12.04? I'm not sold on doing it in this specific way, I just want to use Photoshop without having to reboot. • What are some fast methods for navigating to frequently used folders in Windows 7?

  (This is a followup question from my previous question.) In windows XP I used to be able to quickly navigate to frequently used folders by making use of the 'Favorites' menu item and the hotkey behaviour. In certain conditions it could be set up so that getting to a particular folder was as easy as alt-a x (and without a file explorer window open it was as fast as win-e alt-a x). I am struggling to get anywhere near this speed in Windows 7 and would like to solicit advice from others regarding fast folder navigation to see if I am missing any methods. My current way to navigate quickly is basically move hand to mouse move cursor to navigation pane/pain. scroll all the way to the top (because normally I the panel is focused on whatever deep directory structure I am already in). sift through my 50+ favorites to get the one I want, or click a link to a folder that contains further links in some sort of 'pseudo-tree' functionality. select it. This is slower than my previous method by upwards of an order of magnitude. There are a couple of things I've contemplated: add expandable folders, not just direct links, to the favorites menu. add expandable folders, not just direct links, to the start menu. add links of my favorite folders to a submenu of the start menu so that they come up when I search them. They do but this still rather cumbersome started using 7stacks - url here (I cannot link the url directly due to lack of reputation but http://www.alastria.com/index.php?p=software-7s). This is about the closest I've gotten to some sort of compact, customizeable, easy to access, tree based navigation structure. How do you power users quickly navigate to your favorite folders? Are there keyboard shortcuts I am missing? Can someone recommend other apps or addon or extensions that can achieve this sort of functionality? The Current solution (thanks to the answers below) I am going to use is a combination of Autohotkey and 7stacks - autohotkey to launch 7stacks, 7stacks with the 'menu' stack type for fast, key-enabled navigation to folders organised in a tree structure. This solves about 90% of the issue, the only issues are (note that these are really minor, I am really splitting hairs more than anything here) Can't use this for existing folder navigation (ie already have a explorer window open, want to go to another directory) A bit more cumbersome to add/remove entries to compared to xp favorites. A little slower than xp favorites. Whatever. I'm happy. Thanks guys. • Please wait for User Profile Service... on WIndows 7 takes around 1-2 minutes to process

  When loggging into our domain, after entering account credentials the log in process takes around 1-2 minutes before it gets past the User Profile Service, the rest of the process takes 2-3 secs. This effects all machines running Windows 7 Enteprise 32-bit and is on fairly high spec laptops (SSD drives, i5 2.93Ghz CPU, 4GB memory). Is there any way to speed this up or is this time delay acceptable? Thanks in advance.

• Windows explorer doesn't open My Documents, Music or anything when clicking the library?

  I recently installed Windows 7, and for some reason my Libraries don't open to My Documents, Music and so on.. I can access my files by typing into the explorers address bar, but clicking anything doesn't do anything, it just stays on the same screen. What's wrong? Since this is occurring on a relatively new install, I currently have 259GB free out of 297GB on my HD. The My Documents folder only has about 500 mb of Data.
