• Most efficient way to generate 2D portraits

  Hey, I am not sure if this is a fitting question for gamedev, or if it is too art related. I am currently trying, to create 2D character protraits for my game. At first I tried to draw them and even though it helped polishing my drawing skills the end result either required way too much time or it simply looked like it was created by a grade school kid. So I am currently looking into some tools which from which people like me who are not out of the art-world might benefit. Especially tools which can create a 3D head+hair, so that I can render them. I have tried several 3D generation tools such as makehead and makehuman to create the basic head-shape. But I have to admit I am not well versed in what other options are available/what has the best quality/etc.

• Is it relevant to warn about truncating real constants to 32 bits?

  I'm toying around with LLVM and looking at what it would take to make yet another strongly-typed language, and now that I'm around the syntax, I've noticed that it seems to be a pet peeve of strongly typed language to warn people that their constants won't fit inside a float: // both in Java and C# float foo = 3.2; // error: implicitly truncating a double into a float // or something along these lines Why doesn't this work in Java and C#? I know it's easy to add the f after the 3.2, but is it really doing anything useful? Must I really be that aware that I'm using single-precision reals instead of double-precision reals? Maybe I'm just missing something (which, basically, is why I'm asking). Note that float foo = [const] is not the same thing as float foo = [double variable], where requiring the cast seems normal to me.

• What exactly does "keyword" mean in the context of AdSense CPC?

  I have read in a lot of places that CPC depends on the value of "keywords". However I don't understand what this means. I will set forward some scenarios. Suppose I run a blog about knitting and this is a low paying niche. However I suddenly write five frontpage blog posts about forex trading and insurance. When people click on the frontpage ads, would I be getting paid for the low CPC knitting content or for the high paying forex content? Suppose somebody finds my webpage by searching for knitting. However the actual content of the landing page is filled with high paying keywords. Is the CPC for this page determined by the low paying search or the high paying content?

  One of the five people who interviewed me asked a question that resulted in an hour-long discussion: "Explain how you would develop a frequency-sorted list of the ten thousand most-used words in the English language." My initial response was to assail the assumptions underlying the problem. Language is a fluid thing, I argued. It changes in real time. Vocabulary and usage patterns shift day-to-day. To develop a list of words and their frequencies means taking a snapshot of a moving target.   Xamarin 3 was released last week with a great new addition: Xamarin.Forms . This triggered our attention because we've been using such a system for a couple of years now. We've developed it by ourselves and used it for a bunch of projects. We've been looking for a way to make this project open source but we didn't manage to convince the management. They believe we should not make it open source because we won't win anything with it and all that will happen is that the competition will be able to build apps quicker with our library. We believe open sourcing our library will make the world a better place and that it will make our library much more stable and complete. • Can I use the test suite from an open source project to verify that my own 'compatible library' is compatible?

  The question Is it illegal to rewrite every line of an open source project in a slightly different way, and use it in a closed source project? makes me wonder what would be considered a clean-room implementation in the era of open source projects. Hypothetically, if I were to develop a library which duplicates the publicly documented interface of an open-source library, without ever looking at the source code for that library, could that code ever be considered a derivative work? Obviously it would need the same class hierarchy and method signatures, so that it could be a drop-in replacement - could that in itself, be enough to provoke a copyright claim? What about if I used the test suite of the open source project to verify whether my clean implementation behaved in the same way as the original library? Would using the test suite be enough to dirty my clean code? As should be expected from a question like this, I am not looking for specific legal advice, but looking to document experiences people may have had with this sort of issue.

• ASUS EeePC Fn+F2 ruins wireless until restart

  I managed to get my wireless working beautifully (ath5k driver working great), and it works over a disable/enable wireless cycle, even a suspend/wakeup cycle (read some people have issues with that). Unfortunately, I discovered that if I press Fn+F2 on my keyboard (Asus EeePC 900HA, so that's the wireless toggle key), wireless then stops working until I restart the computer. How can I fix this? I'm running UNR 10.10 (with Unity turned off tyvm!). I heard something about Jupiter controlling these keys, but what about asus-laptop? How can I fix this behaviour? TIA. (Note, I'm a power user, but still fairly new to Linux. I'm picking up speed though).

• Share buttons vs sharer urls

  As some people might know, adding share buttons from Facebook and Twitter can cause a page to slow down. I've seen many sites pass on the common iframe implementations that these sites offer and simply create icons that link to a sharer url for better control of page performance. http://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnn.com%2F&t=CNN%26s+website%27 However, I've also read that Facebook is dropping support for these links. For example, this link now redirects to the Like Button. http://www.facebook.com/facebook-widgets/share.php Here is an article noting that Facebook is deprecating/has deprecated it's share functionality and is sticking with the Like button. http://www.barbariangroup.com/posts/7544-the_facebook_share_button_has_been_deprecated_called_it I'm assuming this is the same for the sharing url. If the sharer url is no longer a reliable option, what other methods are there besides using 3rd party widgets (like Addthis)?

• Programmer's career path

  I've been working as a programmer for the last few years - different companies and freelancing, mostly developing internal-business web applications (well, that's the current model of development, it seems). Besides simple coding I was working on specs, designing applications, and all those around-like things. My question is, what's the career path I should be aiming for? Is it like working on code for the rest of my life? :) Or do programmers make a good manager-position people (I know, those require quite different set of skills) and I should try to improve myself to this direction? I know it's very subjective. Thing is, lately I find myself much more into the designing/working on specs part of the development project then the coding itself. How do you see it? Would you like to go from development to management? Would you like to work on a project with a manager that used to be a coder? Would you like to hire one? :)

  Hi Everyone, As we move the Java EE6 exams from beta to production, you may notice that we have made a slight change in the branding. Instead of being branded Oracle Certified Professional (OCP), these new credentials are now branded Oracle Certified Expert (OCE). One area where we use the Expert brand is for credentials where the technology is advanced or broader than the path based credential requires. Some are high-end add-on certifications, and others have significant additional technological breadth. In these cases, the Expert brand is an indication that someone is tested in more advanced or in-depth skills - beyond the traditional path-based certification. A few examples are RAC Expert for DBAs, or SQL Expert - also for DBAs. Because (1) all of the Java EE6 credentials require that candidates become certified first in Java SE6, and (2) many people earn more than one Java EE credential, we felt that the Expert branding would be more appropriate. • Installing along side of Windows 8

  It appears as though many people are having problems installing Ubuntu along side Windows 8. My problem, however, seems to be sufficiently different to be unique among such problems. I can't get the Ubuntu 12.10 live-USB installer to run. When I boot I get the following four options: Run from this USB Install to disk Check memory (I can't remember the last one) I have tried the top two. Both result in the screen going black briefly then windows 8 booting as per usual. Does anyone know how I may manage to overcome this problem?

• Youtube ENTIRELY crashes the computer

  About a week ago a regular Synaptic update ran in the background. Ever since, when I try to watch a Youtube video (just hitting "play" on the video) the monitor goes black for a moment, then there are just random bars of colour flashing. The only way to fix it is to turn the computer off using the power button and then restarting the computer. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04. It looks like a lot of people have had troubles since that update (red videos, videos that just don't work) but I haven't found anybody with this kind of spectacular crash. I've tried both Firefox and Chromium, same results. Any ideas?

• Ubuntu 11.04 windows XP dual boot problem

  I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 direct from installation disk in a separate partition alongside an existing Windows XP installation. Ubuntu operates fine. I can see the old XP file system and the other network computer and access the internet. The problem is when the computer starts I get the boot selection list for Ubuntu or XP; but I am not allowed to select Windows XP (I cannot scroll down the list with tab or arrows keys). This would be fine for me but the computer is used by other people who are only familiar with windows XP at the moment. I have downloaded and run Boot Repair. • What is the biggest weakness of students graduating with degrees in Computer Science?

  This question is directed more toward employers and graduate student advisors/professors but all opinions are welcome. What do you find is a common weakness of new hires and/or new grad students? Is it entirely variable dependent on the student and his or her university? Is there a particular skill or skillset that you wish new hires/researchers had expertise in and how can we remedey this deficiency? I realize that this question is general and really encapsulates two questions, one more about the weaknesses of new software engineers and one about the weaknesses of new researchers. However, both types of people tend to come from similar courses of study so I'm wondering if there is any overlap. Note: I am not a professor but I'm interested in how best to revise the undergraduate curriculum in CS.

• How do I create a big multiplayer world in UDK?

  I want to create a big multiplayer world in UDK and I'm having a few difficulties. I created the biggest terrain possible but then any terrain related action I do takes forever. However, I've seen videos of people make same size terrain and working without a problem. My pc is strong enough, so maybe someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong. I want to make it even bigger then the biggest terrain size, so I was thinking of doing level streaming but then I read that streaming is working server side which means if I have a player on every terrain all terrains will still be loaded and I want to save as much memory possible so it will work well online. • Is age a factor when looking for internships? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Is it ever too old to learn how to become a programmer? I'm 30 years old going back to school for a 2nd degree in Computer Science. I will be transferring to my local state university this fall and would like to know if my age will be a factor when applying for internships. I have already read a few threads about age and careers: Is it too late to start your career as a programmer at the age of 30? Does it matter that you started developing at 26? While it is reassuring to know that people are getting entry-level programming jobs at 30+, what about internships? Should I even bother with bigger companies like Google, Microsoft, or Apple? I know we have laws against age-discrimination but lets not pretend we live in a perfect world where everyone follows the rules.

• Creating meaningful and engaging quests

  Kill X number of monsters. Gather Y number of items (usually by killing X number of monsters). Deliver this NPC's package to this other NPC who is far far away. etc. Yeah. These quests are easy to implement, easy to complete, but also very boring after the first few times. It's kind of disingenuous to call them quests really; they're more like chores or errands. What ideas for quests have people seen that were well designed, immersive, and rewarding? What specific things did the developers do that made it so? What are some ideas you would use (or have used) to make quests more interesting?

• Is there other ways to do insert/update/delete on a remote oracle database?

  I asked a question recently concerning the speed of execution of insert/update/delete using JDBC driver in a remote machine, but the problem cannot be solved easily. I would like to ask, is there any other way to execute the insert/update/delete to the oracle? The current situation is this: the DB is on a seperate machine than the java program used to update the DB. I looked up the internet and found people suggesting using pure sql or pl/sql to do the update, is that possible? And do we need to operate the sql or pl/sql in a local machine? Because I have no knowledge about pl/sql, so I am not sure if we can create some kind of script and call it on a remote machine. Let say the situation is like this: the input data is on machine A, and the original java program are also on machine A, but the oracle is on machine B. is there any other approach other than JDBC?

• How should I organize my matrices in a 3D game engine?

  I'm working with a group of people from around the world to create a game engine (and hopefully a game with it) within the next upcoming years. My first task is to write a camera class for the engine to use in order to add cameras to the scene, with position and follow points. The problem I have is with using matrices for transformations in the class, should I keep matrices separate to each class? Such as have the model matrix in the model class, camera matrix in the camera class, or have all matrices placed in one class/chuck? I could see pros and cons for each method, but I wanted to hear some input form a more professional standpoint.

• I can't get a native resolution of 1920x1080 on 11.10 (AOC f22 on a Nvidia Geforce GTS 450)

  I have a problem were the highest resolution I can get is 1360x769, this is a 22 inch LCD monitor with a native resolution of 1920x1080_60 I have tried numerous drivers but nothing changed I tried editing the xorg.conf scipt with no success (I am a noob with linux though). Running many commands in terminal witch I got from people with similar problems only gives me errors like "Failed to get size of gamma for output default. I get edid checksum is invalid error on boot down also. I think there maybe a communication problem between my screens EDID and ubuntu although xp and windows 7 detect my screen without any errors and automatically set native resolution. also when I am installing ubuntu I get a horrible screen flashing every few seconds until I have installed the nvidia driver. pc specks if it helps x64 os, mainboard N68PV-GS, 4 gig ram, AMD Phenom(tm) 9350e Quad-Core Processor × 4, Nvidia Geforce gts450 512mb, hard drives set up in a onboard nvidia raid array striped. realy need to get a better resolution, 1360x769 does not look nice on a 22 inch screen. ty
