  • Lagging digital tv over ethernet

    I have a HD Home Run TV over ethernet device, which connects the aerial to my router, and from there the router connects to my PC over about 15m of 100Mbps ethernet cable. The TV output lags every second. It does not do so for a computer much closer to the router. It is odd to me that the network rate is around 7Mbps on a 100Mbps cable. I am not downloading or streaming anything else on the affected computer. Is this lag caused by the speed of the cable, the length of the cable, or interference on the cable? I am considering swapping the ethernet cable with shielded ethernet cable.

  • How do I turn a shared computer back into a shared media drive?

    There is an external hard drive that is set up as a shared media device for a TV. I tried to hook up my the library on my desktop as a shared media drive to watch movies from my computer on the TV. It worked for a little bit but about 5 seconds after getting into my computer the tv went blank and I couldn't access the external hard drive any more. When I checked on my computer the Hard drive was no longer a shared media device but now it was a computer on the network. How do I fix this and turn it back into a shared media device so I can access it on the TV?

I would be fine with writing a batch file or a .net program to do it.   • Bridging two connections in windows 7

    I have recently bought an Samsung UE32ES5500 and I want to connect it to the internet. Not wanting to buy an expensive Samsung wireless adapter for the TV, I've decided to use an ethernet cable. Because the Internet cable passes through underground to the bedroom and the TV is located in the living room, i decided to put a router in the bedroom, and receive it's signal in the living room using a windows 7 laptop. Afterwards I connected the laptop to the TV through an ethernet cable, and bridged the two connections in Network Connections in Control Panel on the laptop. The TV successfully finds the laptop (and the router I think) but still cannot connect to the internet. Does anyone knows a solution to this problem? (the connections must be bridged because I want to have only one network in the house)

  • How do I keep windows XP from automatically changing the screen resolution?

    I have an Asus EEEBox (EB202, intel GMA 950) hooked up to my 1080p TV (DVI-HDMI cable). I use it to watch standard definition movies and TV shows. I prefer to run at 1280x720 so that I can see things more easily, but every time I turn off the TV, then back on again, the resolution defaults to 1080p (1920x1080). How can I force a specific resolution? If that's not possible, is there a way to use a batch script to switch to the desired resolution faster?

  • Your finger prints may unlock your iPhone and it’s digital wallets

    The next version of iPhone is going to have a biometric sensor which may allow your finger prints to authenticate and authorize – unlock the device, sign in to an account, authorize a credit card transaction, etc . The iOS 7 beta 4 released couple of days ago had many traces of biometric software libraries embedded in the OS and they make it pretty clear that Apple is preparing a new iPhone with finger sensor. Biometric sensors are not something new in digital devices. Most of us have been already using them on your laptops to unlock the computers as well as to launch applications. Though these sensors are available in many devices, they are hardly reliable. My personal laptop has a biometric sensor and half of the time either it does not work or it does not recognize my finger prints. When works, it works like a charm and very easy to unlock my device. But Apple is known for delivering great products by nailing down technical challenges and blending technology with beautiful user interfaces.  They had been doing when Steve Jobs was leading the pack and hope his legacy will be carried forward by Tim Cook by delivering amazing products in coming months.  I expect iPhone finger sensors to work flawlessly.     When Apple decided to open retail stores, they came to 360Commerce (now part of Oracle Retail) to help with the secret project. Similarly, when Disney Stores decided to reinvent itself, they also came to us for their POS system. In both cases visiting a store is an experience where sales take a backseat to entertainment, exploration, and engagement This quote from a recent Stores Magazine article says it all: "We compete based on an experience, emotion and immersion like Disney," says Neal Lassila, vice president of global information technology for Disney. "That's opposed to [competing] on price and hawking a doll for $19.99. There is no sales pressure technique." Instead, it's about delivering "a great time." While you're attending the NRF conference in New York next week, you'll definitely want to stop by the new 20,000 square-foot Disney store in Times Square. If you're not attending, you can always check out the videos to get a feel for the stores' vibe. This year we've invited Disney Stores to open a pop-up store within the Oracle Retail booth. There will be lots of items on sale that fit in your suitcase, and there's no better way to demonstrate our POS, including the mobile POS running on an iPod Touch. You should also plan to attend Tuesday morning's super-session The Magic of the Disney Store: An Immersive Retail Experience with Steve Finney. In the case of Apple and Disney, less POS is actually a good thing. In both cases it was important to make the checkout process fast and easy so as not to detract from the overall experience. There will be ample opportunities to see this play out in New York next week, so I hope you take advantage.

  • Why are "Inverted Colors" considered an accessibility feature? [migrated]

    Why is it that in Apple software (OS X and iOS,) the "Inverted Colors" display feature is considered an accessibility option? I understand that some users are color-blind. This would justify the Black & White, or grey-scale modes. What I don't understand is how or why does inverting the display color help someone with any specific, visual impairment or dysfunction. As a programmer that wants to understand the need so that I can develop better, accessible software, what purpose does this feature serve to the end user who has some form of visual impairment? NOTE: I felt that this was a hard question to categorize on StackExchange. I settled here on Programmers because I assume that questions of accessibility are important to all developers and this question sits somewhere in the middle between topics that StackOverflow and SuperUser may cover. Also, this question isn't specific to Apple software. I've just noticed that this feature has been available on Macs for a very long time, it's a feature on iOS, and it's always associated with the Accessibility settings. If I can garner some information regarding the needs of some users, I think that I can develop better, accessible software.

  • How to Use and Manage Extensions to Safari 5

    While there have been hacks to include extensions in Safari for some time now, Safari 5 now offers proper support for them. Today we take a look at managing extensions in the latest version of Safari. Installation and Setup Download and install Safari 5 (link below). Make sure to download the installer that doesn’t include QuickTime if you don’t want it. Also, uncheck getting Apple updates and news in your email. Then decide if you want to install Bonjour for Windows and have Safari automatically update or not. Once it’s installed, launch Safari and select Show Menu Bar from the the Settings Menu. Then go into Preferences \ Advanced and check the box Show Develop menu in the menu bar. Develop will now appear on the Menu Bar…click on it and select Enable Extensions. Using Extensions Now you can find and start using extensions (link below) that will work with Safari 5. In this example we’re installing PageSaver which takes an image of what is showing in your browser. Click on the link for the Extension you want to install…   Then you’ll get a confirmation asking if you want to open or save it. Opening it will install it right away. Click Install in the dialog that asks if you’re sure you want to. Here we see the Extension was successfully installed and you can see the camera icon on the Toolbar. When you’re on a portion of a webpage you want to take an image of, click on the camera icon and you’ll have the image saved in your Downloads folder. Then you can open it up in a browser or image editor. Go into Preferences \ Extensions and from here you can turn the extensions on or off, uninstall, or check for updates. If you’re a Safari user, or thinking about trying it, you’ll enjoy proper support for extensions in version 5.   • .NET development on a “Retina” MacBook Pro

    The rumor that Apple would release a super high resolution version of its 15” laptop has been around for quite awhile, and one I watched closely. After more than three years with a 17” MacBook Pro, and all of the screen real estate it offered, I was ready to replace it with something much lighter. It was a fantastic machine, still doing 6 or 7 hours after 460 charge cycles, but I wanted lighter and faster. With the SSD I put in it, I was able to sell it for $750. The appeal of higher resolution goes way back, when I would plug into a projector and scale up. Consolas, as it turns out, is a nice looking font for code when it’s bigger. While I have mostly indifference for iOS, I have to admit that a higher dot pitch on the iPhone and iPad is pretty to look at. So I ordered the new 15” “Retina” model as soon as the Apple Store went live with it, and got it seven days later. I’ve been primarily using Parallels as my VM of choice from OS X for about five years. They recently put out an update for compatibility with the display, though I’m not entirely sure what that means. I figured there would have to be some messing around to get the VM to look right. The combination that seems to work best is this: Set the display in OS X to “more room,” which is roughly the equivalent of the 1920x1200 that my 17” did. It’s not as stunning as the text at the default 1440x900 equivalent (in OS X), but it’s still quite readable. Parallels still doesn’t entirely know what to do with the high resolution, though what it should do is somehow treat it as native. That flaw aside, I set the Windows 7 scaling to 125%, and it generally looks pretty good. It’s not really taking advantage of the display for sharpness, but hopefully that’s something that Parallels will figure out. Screen tweaking aside, I got the base model with 16 gigs of RAM, so I give the VM 8. I can boot a Windows 7 VM in 9 seconds. Nine seconds! The Windows Experience Index scores are all 7 and above, except for graphics, which are both at 6. Again, that’s in a VM. It’s hard to believe there’s something so fast in a little slim package like that. Hopefully this one gets me at least three years, like the last one.

Specifically to get either (` and ~) or (´ and ¨) I have to press the key twice. Only these two keys behave this way - every other key mapping works.   • Error during Time Machine backups on OS X Lion

    After I turn on my machine, the first couple of Time Machine backups seem to go OK, but after about an hour I get this error: Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder. Latest successful backup: 7/31/11 at 12:32 PM I'm running 10.7. Time Machine is backing up an internal HD to an external USB HD. I've already run Disk Utility to repair the Time Machine partition. It's a relatively new hard drive and didn't have any issues.   • Win 7 Media Center - TV - No audio on HD channels

    I wonder if you can help. I have recently purchased a PCTV Nanostick DVD-T2 290e I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit and I use Windows media center for almost everything. I run a media center machine in my lounge through my Sony AV Amp onto my HD TV. I bought the Nanostick to watch ‘Freeview HD’ programmes when watching the TV through the Media Center – I also have a Sony Freeview Plus system that the Mrs uses. I installed the Nanostick with relatively no issues and as described by many user reviews Media Center picked up the new USB tuner and scanned all the new channels and I was presented with all the HD channels. The issue I have is that there is no audio sound from the HD channels but perfect video. SD works fine. The software that comes with the Nanostick works fine – both sound and vision are perfect for the HD channels. As mentioned, I run my Media Centre lots. I have an extensive DVD and BD collection stored on a server and DVD and BD all play perfectly through Arcsoft Total Media Theatre 5 – with no issues on either SD or HD. My sound card is built into my motherboard and that sends the audio signal to my gfx card and that in turn passes it through to my Sony AV Amp that decodes the audio to be heard on my 5.1 set up. Does anyone have any ideas. I have searched lots on the net and I cant find anyone else with the same issue. I am aware of codecs etc but I don’t really understand it. It also puzzles me that when I read the user/buyer reviews for this product so many people tell the story of faultless installations on the same kind of set up as me.

  • Google TV Gets Bad Reception. Can Media Center Pull in the Signal?

    The news hit Monday morning that Google has decided to delay the release of its Google TV platform, and has asked its OEMs to delay any products that embed the software.  Coming just about two weeks prior to the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Google’s timing is about the worst imaginable.  CES is where the platform should have had its coming out party, especially given all the anticipation that has built up since its initial announcement came 7 months ago. At last year’s CES, it seemed every consumer electronics company had fashioned its own software stack for Internet-based video programming and applications/widgets on its TVs, optical disc players and set top boxes.  In one case, I even saw two platforms on a single TV set (one provided by Yahoo and the other one native to the TV set). The whole point of Google TV was to solve this problem and offer a standard, embeddable platform.  But that won’t be happening, at least not for a while.  Google seems unable to get it together, and more proprietary approaches, like Apple TV, don’t seem to be setting the world of TV-Internet convergence on fire, either. It seems to me, that when it comes to building a “TV operating system,” Windows Media Center is still the best of a bad bunch.  But it won’t stay so for much longer without some changes.  Will Redmond pick up the ball that Google has fumbled?  I’m skeptical, but hopeful.  Regardless, here are some steps that could help Microsoft make the most of Google’s faux pas: Introduce a new Media Center version that uses XBox 360, rather than Windows 7 (or 8), as the platform.  TV platforms should be appliance-like, not PC-like.  Combine that notion with the runaway sales numbers for Xbox 360 Kinect, and the mass appeal it has delivered for Xbox, and the switch form Windows makes even more sense. As I have pointed out before, Microsoft’s Xbox implementation of its Mediaroom platform (announced and demoed at last year’s CES) gets Redmond 80% of the way toward this goal.  Nothing stops Microsoft from going the other 20%, other than its own apathy, which I hope has dissipated. Reverse the decision to remove Drive Extender technology from Windows Home Server (WHS), and create deep integration between WHS and Media Center.  I have suggested this previously as well, but the recent announcement that Drive Extender would be dropped from WHS 2.0 creates the need for me to a) join the chorus of people urging Microsoft to reconsider and b) reiterate the importance of Media Center-WHS integration in the context of a Google compete scenario. Enable Windows Phone 7 (WP7) as a Media Center client.  This would tighten the integration loop already established between WP7, Xbox and Zune.  But it would also counter Echostar/DISH Network/Sling Media, strike a blow against Google/Android (and even Apple/iOS) and could be the final strike against TiVO. Bring the WP7 user interface to Media Center and Kinect-enable it.  This would further the integration discussed above and would be appropriate recognition of WP7’s Metro UI having been built on the heritage of the original Media Center itself.  And being able to run your DVR even if you can’t find the remote (or can’t see its buttons in the dark) could be a nifty gimmick. Microsoft can do this but its consumer-oriented organization, responsible for Xbox, Zune and WP7, has to take the reins here, or none of this will likely work.  There’s a significant chance that won’t happen, but I won’t let that stop me from hoping that it does and insisting that it must.  Honestly, this fight is Microsoft’s to lose.

  • Apple Airport Express, Extreme and Time Capsules, BT Home Hub, Wireless Extenders confusion

    I post quite frequently in Stack Overflow, but use Superuser less frequently. Mainly as I don't change hardware often and rarely have software issues! I live in a small stone cottage, and have an office in a separate building across a yard. I have a BT Homehub which is located in the cottage and a series of Ethernet cables running across the yard to the office. This is fine for my wired stuff. My main office computers are PCs running Windows 7 Ultimate, and one on Win7 Home, all working fine. I also have an old laptop on Win XP which works fine wirelessly in the house for those evenings in front of the TV catching up on a bit of work. I also have an iPhone and an iPad. Recently, I have been trying to get WiFi in the office so I can use Adobe Shadow (or whatever it now is!) to improve mobile web development efficiency using my iPhone and iPad, so I bought this: http://www.ebuyer.com/393462-zyxel-wre2205-500mbps-powerline-wireless-n300-range-extender-wre2205-gb0101f Thinking that would be lovely just plugged into the socket by the door in the office, extending the perimeter of the WiFi from my Homehub. I can't get it to work properly! If I plug a laptop into its ethernet port I can get it to connect to the Homehub and give me a kinda of wired, wireless extender. If, however, I plug the ethernet port into my home hub, it then seems to extend the network, but only my iOs devices work, and all my wired stuff stops working, and seems to create an infinite loop where windows connects to my homehob, and then rather to the internet, it then connects back to the extender thing. Anyway... in the meantime, I took a fatal trip to the Apple Store, where I purchased an Airport Express... solely for the purpose of hooking my iOs devices up as wireless music players in the house. I knew it had WiFi, but didn't want to use that part as an extender, I didn't think it would work on a Homehub anyway. It doesn't work on a Homehub! I now have a new wireless network in the house, which, when anything connects to it cannot connect to the Internet, so it works ONLY as a wireless music player. I then borrowed some Powerline Adaptors from someone and realised that this whole thing was getting totally out of control! It seems all the technology is out there but it's so complicated to get the right series of devices. To further add to the confusion, I wouldn't mind a network hard drive. I bought one that broke and lost everything, so now we're on to looking at the Apple Time Capsules. So my question is... IF... I buy an Apple Time Capsule, can I: Hook that up to my Homehub, leaving the homehub connected to the Internet so my Hub phones still work, then disable wireless on the homehub Link up my Airport Express to the Time Capsule PROPERLY so it will connect to the Internet Do the above with an Apple TV box should I buy one in future Use the Time Capsule as a network hard drive to store video and music that can be viewed/listened to via my iOS devices/Apple TV/Aiport Express anywhere even with my main PC off (this currently stores all this data) Hope that the IOS devices like the WiFi from the TimeCapsule better than the Homehub and work without extension, or buy another Airport Express to get WiFI in the office. Or... should I buy an Airport Extreme and use a USB hard drive for the network drive?
