  • Has anybody here helped fake-create technical details for the movies / TV shows?

    - by none
This is based on another SO question: Have you ever recognized any source code visible in a movie? where we were discussing some of the cheap tricks to add technical "details" to a scene (e.g. showing HTML/java script code or hexdumps and mockup GUIs). Which brought up the question: Has anybody here helped create "computer effects" (e.g. as a technical consultant) for movies/TV shows to add some pseudo-technical details to a scene? If you can, please do provide details - what exactly were you supposed to do, and what did you end up doing? Were your proud of your contribution to the final product? What was the pay like?

  • Create an iTunes Account without a credit card

    - by Matthew Guay
iTunes Store offers a large variety of free content, but to download it you have to have an account. Usually you have to enter your credit card information to sign up, but here’s an easy way to get an iTunes account for free downloads without entering any payment info. Although iTunes Store is known for paid downloads of movies, music, and more, it also has a treasure trove of free media.  Some of it, including Podcasts and iTunes U educational content do not require an account to download.  However, any other free content, including free iPhone/iPod Touch apps and free or promotional music, videos, and TV Shows all require an account to download.  If you try to download a free movie or music download, you will be required to enter payment information. Even though your card will not be charged, it will be kept on file so you can be charged if you download a for-pay item.  However, if you only plan to download free items, it may be preferable to not have your account linked to a credit card. The following steps will get you an account without entering your credit card info. Getting Started First, make sure you have iTunes installed.  If you don’t already have it, download and install it (link below) with the default settings. Now open iTunes, and click the iTunes Store link on the left. Click the App Store link on the top of this page. Select a free app to download.  A simple way to do this is to scroll down to the Top Free Apps box on the right side, hover your mouse over the first item, and click on the Free button that appears when you hover over it. A popup will open asking you to sign in with your Apple ID.  Click “Create New Account”. Click Continue to create your account. Check the box to accept the Store Terms and Conditions, and click Continue.   Enter your email address, password, security question, and date of birth, and uncheck the boxes to get email if you don’t want it…then click Continue. Now, you will be asked to provide a payment method.  Notice now that the last option says None!  Click that bullet option… Then enter your billing address.  Simply enter your normal billing address, even though you are not entering a payment method.  Click Continue and your account will be created! If you get the Address Verification screen just verify your county and click Done. An email will be sent to you to verify your account… Click on the link in your email to verify your account, iTunes will launch and you’re prompted to enter in the Apple ID and Password you just created. Your account is successfully created! Now you can easily download any free media from iTunes.  Keep an eye on the Free on iTunes box on the bottom of the iTunes Store page for interesting downloads, or if you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, watch the popular Free downloads on the Apps page. And of course there is always great content on iTunes U to grab free as well. Purchasing for-pay media If you want to purchase an item on the iTunes store later, simply click on the item to download as normal.  Click Buy to proceed with the purchase. iTunes will prompt you that you need to enter payment information to complete the purchase.  Enter your Apple ID email and password, and then add the payment information as prompted.   Remove Payment Information from an iTunes Account If you’ve already entered payment information into your iTunes account, and would like to remove it, click Store in the top iTunes menu, and select View My Account. Enter your Apple ID email and password, and click View Account.   This will open your account information.  Click the Edit Payment Information button.   Now, click the None button to remove your payment information.  Click Done to save the changes. Your account will now prompt you to enter payment information if you try to make a purchase.  You could repeat these steps after making a purchase if you do not want iTunes to keep your payment info on file. Conclusion This is a great way to make an iTunes account without entering your credit card, or to remove your credit card info from your account.  Parents may especially enjoy this tip, as they can have an iTunes account on their kids computer or iPod Touch without worrying about them spending money with it. • New iPad vs. iPad 2–Side by side comparison of hardware specification [Infographic]

    - by Gopinath
Apple released the 3rd generation of iPad on March 7th with spectacular hardware and software specs. The new iPad is the most advanced tablet available in the market with not much of competition. The closest competitor to the new iPad is not from Android or RIM or Amazon as they are no where close to the standards of the new iPad . But the competitor is none other than previous generation of iPad 2. In order to help you decide which Apple tablet suits your requirements here is an infographic comparing the iPad  with iPad 2

  • Mentioning a price for a service behind a free app in App Store

    - by David
We are making a business service and have created an app to be used as a front-end. The app is free, but the service is not. Due to Apple taking 30% of in-app purchases, our service cannot be bought as an in-app purchase. My question is: Could Apple choose to throw out our app if we mention the price of the service in the description of our app in iTunes or in a help-text in the app? It seems unreasonable that this would cause problems, but the potential consequences to our business could be terrible so I want to make sure.

  • Is there any way to get faster app reviews?

    - by David
I am trying to build a business around an iPhone app. The app will be our main sales channel, and being able to adapt the sales channel faster than the 9-10 days delay cause by the app review times is crucial. Therefore, I was wondering whether there is anything I can do to improve the speed of reviews. I am thinking that the publishers of Angry Birds, surely would not have to wait in line for reviews on the same terms as some obscure free app. So what can I do? Some things I am considering: Would Apple prioritize apps that they earn money on? Could I in some way pay Apple directly? I already know of the possibility of requesting an expedite review, but it seems like one can get punished for supplying a non-technical reason.

  • Apple Co-founder Wozniak: Windows Phone is more beautiful and intuitive than Android

    - by Gopinath
It’s a great day for Microsoft and Nokia who are working hard to resurrect Windows Phone. Steve Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple and gadget lover, has all praise for Windows Phone after using Nokia Lumia 900 for a while. He shared his experience of using Lumia powered by Windows Phone 7.5 in a interview and he is very impressed. Here are the few good quotes from the interview Just for looks and beauty, I definitely favor the Windows 7 Phone over Android. I’m kinda shocked how every screen is much more beautiful than the same apps on Android and iPhone. I’m just shocked, I haven’t seen anything yet that isn’t more beautiful than the other platforms. It’s more intuitive and beautiful. This is going to change the perception of Windows Phone  which is seen  as “not-so good” operating system for mobiles.  Along with these high profile endorsements, if Microsoft can manage to attract developers in building good apps then Windows Phone is going to be a fitting competitor to iOS and Android. via aNewDomain

  • Xcode license agreement different than Apple Developer Agreement?

    - by longpine
The Apple Developer Agreement (on their website when signing up for a developer account) says: "Apple reserves the right, at its discretion, to modify this Agreement, including any rules and policies at any time." And also: "You agree to follow Apple's Guidelines For Using Apple Trademarks and Copyrights as published on Apple's website at www.apple.com/legal/guidelinesfor3rdparties.html ("Guidelines") and as may be modified from time to time." If I buy a Mac with OS X, it comes with Xcode, correct? In that case what does the license agreement for Xcode say? Does it contain the clauses above, or anything similar? If anyone wants to post a copy of the license agreement here, that would be helpful, but I'm not sure if copyright would allow that.

  • Why didn't Apple initially implement copy and paste in the iPhone?

    - by Howiecamp
Why didn't Apple implement copy and paste prior to iPhone OS 3.0? The answers I don't think are correct (but I could certainly be wrong) are: They couldn't figure out how to do it and provide a good user experience Some crazy multi-tasking or battery limitation iPhone users didn't want or need it (this was Microsoft's argument and is totally specious) Thoughts?

  • Over-scan Issues when using HDTV through VGA

    - by RPG Master
Right now all we can do is set the TV to 1280x768 instead of its native resolution of 1360x768. Setting it to its native resolution gives you a screen with a large portion of the left side of the screen cut off. • Can only "agents" build and submit Applications to Apple?

    - by Martin
I'm afraid I know the answer to this but I'll ask on the longshot chance that I'm wrong: I've been doing some freelance work creating an iPhone application for a company. They've created their own developer account and added me as an team member with "admin" rights. That seems to be the highest assignable rights (with the only higher level being "agent" and belonging only to whoever signed up for the account). Yet, I don't have an option under the provisioning portal to create a distribution certificate or profile. Is there any way to create these myself without having to ask my client for their primary login? They're not particulary tech savy so it would be difficult to walk them through the process to create the necessary certificates (and would require me giving them a certificate request from my computer, etc. etc.). But it seems like there should be some way to create a distribution build without "agent" rights, right? Could Apple seriously expect only one person from a company to do all the building and uploading of apps to the store?

  • How can I track a bug report in Apple’s Radar?

    - by zoul
Hello! There’s a feature I’d like to use on iOS. It has already been requested on Radar and people from Apple say that they will probably implement it. Is there a way to get to the particular bug report in Radar so that I can watch the progress? I know I can’t see other people’s bug reports on Radar. What if I file a duplicate bug report, will that let me know when the original bug closes? I know about Open Radar, but the request in question is not there.

  • Which trick uses Apple to show icons in the dock contextual menu ?

    - by Matthieu Riegler
My question is quite simple : To use a custom menu for the apps icon on the dock, - (NSMenu*) applicationDockMenu: (id) sender; of the NSApplicationDelegate has to return the menu that the dock will display. Using setImage on a NSMenuItem, you can normaly add icons to the menu. They show up on the normal menu, but not on in contextual menu of the app's dock icon. Then how did Apple manage QuickTime, XCode, Preview to show icons in the list of recent opened files accessible in their dock contextual menu ? Thx.

  • Do all the network cards use the same frequency to send signals to wire?

    - by smwikipedia
I am comparing my cable TV wire to my network wire. In a TV cable wire, different frequencies are used by different TV channels. And since a certain channel use a fixed frequency, I think the only left way to represent different signal is with the carrier wave's amplitude. But what about the network wire? For all the network cards with the same type, do they also use different frequencies to send signals just like TV cable? I vaguely remember that they use frequency adjustment to represent signals. So the frequency should not be a fixed one. So how did all the network cards that sharing the same medium differentiate their own signal from others?
