  • Create Adventure Game Scene/Room/Backdrop from Real Photo

    - by Lyuben
Is there a suitable software or a good tutorial for creating 2D rooms/scenery for adventure games from real photos? Is it possible to achieve good results by using photos, or the hand-drawn style will always be the best choice? Thank you! --- EDIT --- I want to clarify that I'm particularly interested in the art creation process, not on the environment in which to build games. I'm writing the game in Java for Android, but I don't think it matters. Also, I'm not trying to decide if the game will have photo realistic rooms or not - I want to achieve 2d pixelated, old-school style background scenes and I wonder if this can be made from photos, because I cannot draw them myself. For example, can I shoot a scene with my camera and then make it look something like the image in the following link: PIXEL ART FOREST I know that I cannot get the same quality as an absolutely hand-drawn pixel, but I'm looking for some decent technology/tutorial/software to make them somewhat similar.

  • How to ask and acceptalbe question? [closed]

    - by Richard Seitz
My wife and I own a small art business for the purpose of selling painting. These are paintings done by my wife. We feel because of demand and comments that we should now consider the web to sell our art. How do we start? We already have a registered domain name. We have talked to many people that say they are experts in the design and hosting of webs. What should we ask the potential designer of our web to determine if he/she are professional or just thieves. What does one ask to evaluate the competence and integrity of a web designer? Thank You

Guy Kawasaki, the famous author of The Art Of The Start is writing a new book about Enchantment (will be called Art Of Enchantment). He is asking stories about your employees, your things or even websites you visit. What about your colleagues? I need examples of a programmer (you), getting enchanted by another colleague, programmer, analyst, tester (must be within your team). • Munging non-printable characters to dots using string.translate()

    - by Jim Dennis
So I've done this before and it's a surprising ugly bit of code for such a seemingly simple task. The goal is to translate any non-printable character into a . (dot). For my purposes "printable" does exclude the last few characters from string.printable (new-lines, tabs, and so on). This is for printing things like the old MS-DOS debug "hex dump" format ... or anything similar to that (where additional whitespace will mangle the intended dump layout). I know I can use string.translate() and, to use that, I need a translation table. So I use string.maketrans() for that. Here's the best I could come up with: filter = string.maketrans( string.translate(string.maketrans('',''), string.maketrans('',''),string.printable[:-5]), '.'*len(string.translate(string.maketrans('',''), string.maketrans('',''),string.printable[:-5]))) ... which is an unreadable mess (though it does work). From there you can call use something like: for each_line in sometext: print string.translate(each_line, filter) ... and be happy. (So long as you don't look under the hood). Now it is more readable if I break that horrid expression into separate statements: ascii = string.maketrans('','') # The whole ASCII character set nonprintable = string.translate(ascii, ascii, string.printable[:-5]) # Optional delchars argument filter = string.maketrans(nonprintable, '.' * len(nonprintable)) And it's tempting to do that just for legibility. However, I keep thinking there has to be a more elegant way to express this!

  • How to understand the BODYSTRUCTURE information returned by IMAP servers?

    - by Tony
I'm using python's IMAPClient to retrieve email messages from IMAP server. One of the attributes I retrieve is BODYSTRUCTURE. However, I can't find any documentation on how to interpret the return values. Here's the body structure that IMAP server returns 16:12.679978 < FLAGS (NotJunk $NotJunk \Seen) BODYSTRUCTURE ((("TEXT" "PLAIN" ("CHARSET" "us-ascii") NIL NIL "QUOTED-PRINTABLE" 4888 170 NIL NIL NIL)("TEXT" "HTML" ("CHARSET" "us-ascii") NIL NIL "QUOTED-PRINTABLE" 32407 479 NIL NIL NIL) "ALTERNATIVE" ("BOUNDARY" "Apple-Mail=_3AAA7CD7-3B07-406A-83CB-2C7762C3306E") NIL NIL)("APPLICATION" "PKCS7-SIGNATURE" ("NAME" "smime.p7s") NIL NIL "BASE64" 2414 NIL ("ATTACHMENT" ("FILENAME" "smime.p7s")) NIL) "SIGNED" ("BOUNDARY" "Apple-Mail=_DF4FE6BB-F796-46D7-A593-9723F4315DD2" "MICALG" "sha1" "PROTOCOL" "application/pkcs7-signature") NIL NIL)) Here's the same body structure parsed to python type. • Jquery Flexslider - can't see navigational images (manualControl)

    - by Kim Thomas
I've spent a lot of time looking at the post on 3/13/12 re: manual controls, but isn't getting me all the way there...probably because I don't know jquery. Sorry, newbie on board. I'm trying to get the right/left arrows to show, as well as the 1, 2, 3...at the bottom. They are there, I see the lists on Firebug, just don't know how to add them to the "hook" (?) so they appear. • .NET file Decryption - Bad Data

    - by Jon
I am in the process of rewriting an old application. The old app stored data in a scoreboard file that was encrypted with the following code: private const String SSecretKey = @"?B?n?Mj?"; public DataTable GetScoreboardFromFile() { FileInfo f = new FileInfo(scoreBoardLocation); if (!f.Exists) { return setupNewScoreBoard(); } DESCryptoServiceProvider DES = new DESCryptoServiceProvider(); //A 64 bit key and IV is required for this provider. //Set secret key For DES algorithm. DES.Key = ASCIIEncoding.ASCII.GetBytes(SSecretKey); //Set initialization vector. DES.IV = ASCIIEncoding.ASCII.GetBytes(SSecretKey); //Create a file stream to read the encrypted file back. FileStream fsread = new FileStream(scoreBoardLocation, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read); //Create a DES decryptor from the DES instance. ICryptoTransform desdecrypt = DES.CreateDecryptor(); //Create crypto stream set to read and do a //DES decryption transform on incoming bytes. CryptoStream cryptostreamDecr = new CryptoStream(fsread, desdecrypt, CryptoStreamMode.Read); DataTable dTable = new DataTable("scoreboard"); dTable.ReadXml(new StreamReader(cryptostreamDecr)); cryptostreamDecr.Close(); fsread.Close(); return dTable; } This works fine. I have copied the code into my new app so that I can create a legacy loader and convert the data into the new format. The problem is I get a "Bad Data" error: System.Security.Cryptography.CryptographicException was unhandled Message="Bad Data.\r\n" Source="mscorlib" The error fires at this line: dTable.ReadXml(new StreamReader(cryptostreamDecr)); The encrypted file was created today on the same machine with the old code. I guess that maybe the encryption / decryption process uses the application name / file or something and therefore means I can not open it. Does anyone have an idea as to: A) Be able explain why this isn't working? B) Offer a solution that would allow me to be able to open files that were created with the legacy application and be able to convert them please? Here is the whole class that deals with loading and saving the scoreboard: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Text; using System.Security.Cryptography; using System.Runtime.InteropServices; using System.IO; using System.Data; using System.Xml; using System.Threading; namespace JawBreaker { [Serializable] class ScoreBoardLoader { private Jawbreaker jawbreaker; private String sSecretKey = @"?B?n?Mj?"; private String scoreBoardFileLocation = ""; private bool keepScoreBoardUpdated = true; private int intTimer = 180000; public ScoreBoardLoader(Jawbreaker jawbreaker, String scoreBoardFileLocation) { this.jawbreaker = jawbreaker; this.scoreBoardFileLocation = scoreBoardFileLocation; } // Call this function to remove the key from memory after use for security [System.Runtime.InteropServices.DllImport("KERNEL32.DLL", EntryPoint = "RtlZeroMemory")] public static extern bool ZeroMemory(IntPtr Destination, int Length); // Function to Generate a 64 bits Key. private string GenerateKey() { // Create an instance of Symetric Algorithm. • Trouble connecting to vsftpd on ubuntu server

    - by littleK
I have installed Ubuntu Server 10.10 and I am using it to host a domain that I have. I am trying to set up FTP for the server, but I am running into some problems. I have successfully installed vsFTPd and I have opened up ports 20, 21 on my firewall. In my vsFTPd configuration, I have enabled SSL. Every time I try to connect to my server via FTP, I receive a "Connection Refused" error. I have had a little more success with SSL disabled, however the connection process will time out after the LIST command (but it does accept my authentication). Here is my vsFTPd configuration, the SSL stuff is at the bottom: # Example config file /etc/vsftpd.conf # # The default compiled in settings are fairly paranoid. This sample file # loosens things up a bit, to make the ftp daemon more usable. # Please see vsftpd.conf.5 for all compiled in defaults. # # READ THIS: This example file is NOT an exhaustive list of vsftpd options. # Please read the vsftpd.conf.5 manual page to get a full idea of vsftpd's # capabilities. # # # Run standalone? vsftpd can run either from an inetd or as a standalone # daemon started from an initscript. listen=YES # # Run standalone with IPv6? # Like the listen parameter, except vsftpd will listen on an IPv6 socket # instead of an IPv4 one. • Can't Get Virtual Users Setup in VSFTPD -Tried Everything

    - by N.T.
Have Ubuntu 11.10 with vsftpd installed and working. Can not get virtual users setup at all? Vsftpd will allow main Ubuntu owner account to login, but nothing else? I've followed several tutorials on adding virtual users, but nothing works? I just need to add 2 virtual users and have them be able to upload files to vsftpd Ubuntu computer from other computers on my Lan network. Everywhere I've looked, people just point toward tutorials on adding virtual users, but that just is NOT working. I've been struggling with this for over a week now! PLEASE Help. Thanks. I'll even give a donation if someone can figure this out. here is the vsftpd.conf file I am using. I copied the original, and make a new one, every time I try a tutorial. So far, none have worked. Here is the vsftpd.conf file I'm using. (I hope this helps?) # Example config file /etc/vsftpd.conf # # The default compiled in settings are fairly paranoid. This parameter and the listen parameter are mutually # exclusive. #listen_ipv6=YES # # Allow anonymous FTP? (Disabled by default) anonymous_enable=YES # # Uncomment this to allow local users to log in. local_enable=YES # # Uncomment this to enable any form of FTP write command. write_enable=YES # # Default umask for local users is 077. You may wish to change this to 022, # if your users expect that (022 is used by most other ftpd's) local_umask=022 # # Uncomment this to allow the anonymous FTP user to upload files. This only # has an effect if the above global write enable is activated. Also, you will # obviously need to create a directory writable by the FTP user. #anon_upload_enable=YES # # Uncomment this if you want the anonymous FTP user to be able to create # new directories. anon_mkdir_write_enable=YES # # Activate directory messages - messages given to remote users when they # go into a certain directory. dirmessage_enable=YES # # If enabled, vsftpd will display directory listings with the time # in your local time zone. • loading multiple .mat files in MATLAB

    - by smilingbuddha
I have 110 files named time1.mat, time2.mat ..., time110.mat. I want to load these matrices into the MATLAB workspace. I have always used load -'ASCII' matrix.mat to load an ASCII matrix file in the current folder. So I tried doing for i=1:10 filename=strcat('time',int2str(i),'.mat'); load -'ASCII' filename end But I am getting a MATLAB error as ??? Error using ==> load Unable to read file filename: No such file or directory. ? Of course the string filename seems to be evaluated correctly by MATLAB as time1.mat. in the first iteration where it crashes at the load line. Any suggestions how I should do this?

  • Infinite loop when using fscanf

I wrote this simple program in C, because I'm studying FILES right now at University. I take a txt file with a list of the results of the last race so my program will show the data formatted as I want. Here's my code: /* Esercizio file Motogp */ #include <stdio.h> #define SIZE 20 int main () { int pos, punt, num; float kmh; char nome[SIZE+1], cognome[SIZE+1], moto[SIZE+1]; char naz[SIZE+1], nome_file[SIZE+1]; FILE *fp; printf ("Inserisci il nome del file da aprire: "); gets (nome_file); fp = fopen (nome_file, "r"); if (fopen == NULL) printf ("Errore nell' apertura del file %s\n", nome_file); else { while (fscanf (fp, "%d %d %d %s %s %s %s %.2f", &pos, &punt, &num, nome, cognome, naz, moto, &kmh) != EOF ) { printf ("Posizione di arrivo: %d\n", pos); printf ("Punteggio: %d\n", punt); printf ("Numero pilota: %d\n", num); printf ("Nome pilota: %s\n", nome); printf ("Cognome pilota: %s\n", cognome); printf ("Nazione: %s\n", naz); printf ("Moto: %s\n", moto); printf ("Media Kmh: %d\n\n", kmh); } } fclose(fp); return 0; } and there's my txt file: 1 25 99 Jorge LORENZO SPA Yamaha 164.4 2 20 26 Dani PEDROSA SPA Honda 164.1 3 16 4 Andrea DOVIZIOSO ITA Yamaha 163.8 4 13 1 Casey STONER AUS Honda 163.8 5 11 35 Cal CRUTCHLOW GBR Yamaha 163.6 6 10 19 Alvaro BAUTISTA SPA Honda 163.5 7 9 46 Valentino ROSSI ITA Ducati 163.3 8 8 6 Stefan BRADL GER Honda 162.9 9 7 69 Nicky HAYDEN USA Ducati 162.5 10 6 11 Ben SPIES USA Yamaha 162.3 11 5 8 Hector BARBERA SPA Ducati 162.1 12 4 17 Karel ABRAHAM CZE Ducati 160.9 13 3 41 Aleix ESPARGARO SPA ART 160.2 14 2 51 Michele PIRRO ITA FTR 160.1 15 1 14 Randy DE PUNIET FRA ART 160.0 16 0 77 James ELLISON GBR ART 159.9 17 0 54 Mattia PASINI ITA ART 159.4 18 0 68 Yonny HERNANDEZ COL BQR 159.4 19 0 9 Danilo PETRUCCI ITA Ioda 158.2 20 0 22 Ivan SILVA SPA BQR 158.2 When I run my program, it return me an infinite loop of the first one. • jQuery "Autocomplete" plugin is messing up the order of my data

    - by Max Williams
I'm using Jorn Zaefferer's Autocomplete plugin on a couple of different pages. In both instances, the order of displayed strings is a little bit messed up. Example 1: array of strings: basically they are in alphabetical order except for General Knowledge which has been pushed to the top: General Knowledge,Art and Design,Business Studies,Citizenship,Design and Technology,English,Geography,History,ICT,Mathematics,MFL French,MFL German,MFL Spanish,Music,Physical Education,PSHE,Religious Education,Science,Something Else Displayed strings: General Knowledge,Geography,Art and Design,Business Studies,Citizenship,Design and Technology,English,History,ICT,Mathematics,MFL French,MFL German,MFL Spanish,Music,Physical Education,PSHE,Religious Education,Science,Something Else Note that Geography has been pushed to be the second item, after General Knowledge. The rest are all fine. Example 2: array of strings: as above but with Cross-curricular instead of General Knowledge. Cross-curricular,Art and Design,Business Studies,Citizenship,Design and Technology,English,Geography,History,ICT,Mathematics,MFL French,MFL German,MFL Spanish,Music,Physical Education,PSHE,Religious Education,Science,Something Else Displayed strings: Cross-curricular,Citizenship,Art and Design,Business Studies,Design and Technology,English,Geography,History,ICT,Mathematics,MFL French,MFL German,MFL Spanish,Music,Physical Education,PSHE,Religious Education,Science,Something Else Here, Citizenship has been pushed to the number 2 position. I've experimented a little, and it seems like there's a bug saying "put things that start with the same letter as the first item after the first item and leave the rest alone". Kind of mystifying. I've tried a bit of debugging by triggering alerts inside the autocomplete plugin code but everywhere i can see, it's using the correct order. it seems to be just when its rendered out that it goes wrong. Any ideas anyone? max EDIT - reply to Clint Thanks for pointing me at the relevant bit of code btw. To make diagnosis simpler i changed the array of values to ["carrot", "apple", "cherry"], which autocomplete re-orders to ["carrot", "cherry", "apple"]. Here's the array that it generates for stMatchSets: stMatchSets = ({'':[#1={value:"carrot", data:["carrot"], result:"carrot"}, #3={value:"apple", data:["apple"], result:"apple"}, #2={value:"cherry", data:["cherry"], result:"cherry"}], c:[#1#, #2#], a:[#3#]}) So, it's collecting the first letters together into a map, which makes sense as a first-pass matching strategy. What i'd like it to do though, is to use the given array of values, rather than the map, when it comes to populating the displayed list. I can't quite get my head around what's going on with the cache inside the guts of the code (i'm not very experienced with javascript).
