  I'm writing a jQuery application to allow analysis of data with the help of visual cues. My data is retrieved via XMLHttpRequest in the form of JSON. The visual cues include histograms, spark lines, and various other graph types. The idea is that the user is able to narrow their data via these various visual views. My question is thus - aside from the Google Charts API, does there exist a JavaScript way of presenting a Venn Diagram? Requirement: no Flash. Canvas is acceptable.

• Stable random color algorithm

  Here we have an interesting real-world algorithm requirement involving colors. 1) Nice random colors: In ordeeing to draw a beautifull chart (i.e: pie chart) we need to pick a random set of Colors that: a) are different enought b) Play nicely Doesnt Look hard. For example u fix bright and saturation and divide hue in steps of 360/Num_sectors 2) Stable: given Pie1 with sectors with labes ('A','B','C') and Pie2 with sector with labels ('B','C','D'), will be nice if color('B',pie1)= color('B',pie2) and the same for 'C' and so on, so people don't get crazy when seeing similar updated charts, even if some sectors appear some dissapeared or the number of sectors changed. The label is the only stable thing. 3) hard-coded colors: the algorithm allows hardcoded label-color relationships as an input but stills doing a good work (1 & 2) for the rest of free labels. I think this algorithm, even if it looks quite ad-hoc, will be usefull in more then one situation. Any ideas?

  What is your opinion about open source software? It is helpful in many situation, for example a community can correct many bugs. But I also think that it can be dangerous for a software developer. If you develop an application and share its source code, a lot of applications can grow with a little effort, simply copying part of your code. For example, if you develop a library in WPF which can be used to create charts, and share your code, this can be dangerous for companies which main business is WPF component developing. And obviously it is dangerous for a software developer who works in that company. What do you think about this?

• Stress Test tool for Password Protected Website

  We need to run a stress test on a password protection section of a website we host. What tool (paid or free) would be best for us to use for this? We'd like to be able to create several 'scripts' and then have the stress test simulate X number of users. Each script will have us login as a specific user and then click on some links and submit forms to simulate an actual user. Ideally the software would also create some nice data exports/charts. Server is a linux web server, but we could run this on linux or Windows so software that will run on either is fine.

  I'm looking to create a filter that can give me two things: number of request pr minute, and average responsetime pr minute. I already got the individual readings, I'm just not sure how to add them up. I don't want to store the data in any database. Just a way to get current numbers out when requested As this is a high volume application; low overhead is essential.   i will be analysing vast amount of network traffic related data shortly. i will pre-process the data in order to analyse it. i have found that R and SPSS are among the most popular tools for statistical analysis. i will also be generating quite a lot of graphs and charts. so i was wondering what is the basic difference between these two softwares. i am not asking which one is better. i just wanted to know what are the difference in terms of workflow between the two besides the fact that SPSS has a GUI. I will be mostly working with scripts in either case anyway so i wanted to know about the other differences.

• How to store user preferences? Cookie becomes bigger..

  My application (Asp.Net MVC) has great interaction with the user interface (jQuery/js). For example, setting various searches charts, moving the gadgets on the screen and more .. I of course want to keep all data for each user. So that data will be available from any page in the Dumaine and the user will accepts his preferences. Now I keep all data in a cookie because it did not seem logical asynchronous access to the server each time the user changes something and thet happens a lot.When the user logout from the application I save the cookie to the database. The problem is the cookie becomes very large. The thought that this huge cookie is attached to each server request makes me feel that my attitude is wrong. Another problem cookies have size limit. It varies from your browser but I definitely have been close to the border - my cookie easily become 4kb Is there another solution?

• Plotting 3-tuple data points in a surface / contour plot using matplotlib

  I have some surface data that is generated by an external program as XYZ values. I want to create the following graphs, using matplotlib: Surface plot Contour plot Contour plot overlayed with a surface plot I have looked at several examples for plotting surfaces and contours in matplotlib - however, the Z values seems to be a function of X and Y i.e. Y ~ f(X,Y). I assume that I will somehow need to transform my Y variables, but I have not seen any example yet, that shows how to do this. So, my question is this: given a set of (X,Y,Z) points, how may I generate Surface and contour plots from that data? BTW, just to clarify, I do NOT want to create scatter plots. Also although I mentioned matplotlib in the title, I am not averse to using rpy(2), if that will allow me to create these charts.

• In Django how display all of the values aftere the for loop is finished instead of displaying them one by one

  Hello, In my django project in the view I call the last 6 values in the column and send them to the template. I then would like to pass into google charts api those 6 values and have a graph.   Which project tracking tool do you use? Does it allow programmers to bill hours worked to projects/tasks? Does it allow to track items promised vs. items delivered? Does it allow to forecast personnel needs when you have only a ballpark estimate of how many hours you are going to need for different task types? Does it integrate with your bug tracker? [Mantis] Does it integrate with your source control tool? [Subversion] Does it allow you to easily publish your schedule and current priorities to team members? Does it produce reports on any or all of the above? Am I even right in calling a tool that does those things a "Project tracking/management tool"? What does your tool have that makes you love it and use it every day? I don't really care about Gantt charts. I find Microsoft Project quite clunky for this needs (although I'm hardly an expert user).

• Invert bitmap colors

  I have the following problem. I have a charting program, and it's design is black, but the charts (that I get from the server as images) are light (it actually uses only 5 colors: red, green, white, black and gray). To fit with the design inversion does a good job, the only problem is that red and green are inverted also (green - pink, red - green). Is there a way to invert everything except those 2 colors, or a way to repaint those colors after inversion? And how costly are those operations (since I get the chart updates pretty often)? Thanks in advance :) UPDATE I tried replacing colors with setPixel method in a loop for(int x = 0 ;x < chart.getWidth();x++) { for(int y = 0;y < chart.getHeight();y++) { final int replacement = getColorReplacement(chart.getPixel(x, y)); if(replacement != 0) { chart.setPixel(x, y, replacement); } } } Unfortunetely, the method takes too long (~650ms), is there a faster way to do it, and will setPixels() method work faster?

  I want to create an interface similar to the following in Silverlight. http://demos6.dundas.com/Silverlight/ I need to create a dashboard where different elements can be re-arranged using Silverlight. The dashboard elements can be different usercontrols that in turn may contain charts, guages, grids...... The user should be able to dynamically add and remove dashboard elements. The user should also be able to use drag and drop to reposition the dashboard elements. • Graph visualization code in javascript?

  Hi. I have a data structure that represents a directed graph, and I want to render that dynamically on an HTML page. Does anyone know of any javascript code that can do a reasonable job with graph layout? These graphs will usually be just a few nodes, maybe ten at the very upper end, so my guess is that performance isn't going to be a big deal. Ideally, I'd like to be able to hook it in with jQuery so that users can tweak the layout manually by dragging the nodes around. Edit: Google's Visualization API seems to be more "graphs as charts" oriented than "graphs as nodes" oriented. I didn't see any node-oriented visualizations already built there, anyway. Do you know that one exists?

• Can we have ExtJs components inside a Flex driven page

  Hi, I am working on a page which mainly consists of Charts and Grids. Thought that Flex would be the best fit with some cool effects. But however, I now feel that ExtJs grid looks better than Flex data grid. My question is whether there is any possibility / mechanism to embed Ext JS grid into a Flex page. Lets say my main page has a Flex tab panel. In first tab, I would like to see 'Flex Chart' and in second tab I would want to see 'ExtJS grid'.   I'm trying out the Highcharts jQuery plugin for creating charts of data in an MVC application. But I need to get the data for the function dynamically from an Action Method. How can I do that? • transition of x-axis results in overflow

  First of all, no: this question is not about the (yet) ugly transition of the lines (I might open another one for that, though..). I'm displaying data in line charts and the user can select the time horizon. The x-axis then correspondingly transitions so as to fit to the changed time horizon. In attached image, e.g., the time horizon was 1 week and then I switched to 4 weeks. The number of ticks on the x-axis increases from 7 to 28, correspondingly. Question: How can I prevent the x-axis animation to display outside the svg container? As you can see, the additional dates fly in from the left and they are being animated far far outside the container. Any ideas? • Dynamically created image doesn't show when <img>'s src is refreshed to point to it

  Hello, I have a javascript function generateGraph() { ... jQuery.get('chart.php?month='+month+'&year='+year); document.getElementById('graph').src = 'charts/'+month+'_'+year+'.png'; ... } which is called onChange. It basically creates, if not exists, or refreshes if already exists, a PNG image (using the first line above) and supposedly displays the generated image (using the second line above). The first line works, but the second one doesn't. Meaning, the image is generated, but the second line can't display the image, unless the page is reloaded, or if the image being referred to already existed before the page was loaded (meaning the 1st line just "refreshed" the image) Any ideas as to why this is and how to fix it?   There are plenty of programming languages out there, as you all may know. I am primarily looking for a list of programming languages WITH some very neat proof of concepts. I would really like to learn a new language, but whenever I dive into something new and popular, it isn't what I expected. Any tutorial out there will give you code, small examples, but won't show you the true power of the language. I am looking for examples that run entirely on the language that it is exemplifying. For example, If I said C#, I could possibly show you a complete C# app with backend queries, reports, tables, all with a nice interface. It would be completely reliant on the language that is provided, so no supporting languages. I understand that most languages are integrated with other languages in order to provide a richer application. Any links, charts, websites that may reflect this request is appreciated.

  I tried to add multiple series in highcharts synchronously, but the response time is very slow. It took almost 3-5 seconds to display the charts. Here is part of the code. while(chart.series.length>0){ chart.series[0].remove(true); } chart.addSeries(series1); chart.addSeries(series2); chart.addSeries(series3); chart.addSeries(series4); chart.addSeries(series5); When I remain only one addSeries command, it response immediately, so I realized it may be the problem of add multiple series in highcharts synchronously. Not so good at highcharts, so is there anyone could help me about this? Or maybe there is another way to do this, I am much appreciated.

  Hi all, After running a bunch of simulations I'm going to be outputting the results into a table created using SQLAlchemy. I plan to use this data to generatw statistics - mean and variance being key. These, in turn, will be used to generate some graphs - histograms/line graphs, pie-charts and box-and-whisker plots specifically. I'm aware of the Python graphing libraries like matplotlib. The thing is, I'm not sure how to have this integrate with the information contained within the database tables. Any suggestions on how to make these two play with each other? The main problem is that I'm not sure how to supply the information as "data sets" to the graphing library. Thanks in advance.

• Good code architecture for this problem?

  I am developing a space shooter game with customizable ships. You can increase the strength of any number of properties of the ship via a pair of radar charts*. Internally, i represent each ship as a subclassed SpaceObject class, which holds a ShipInfo that describes various properties of that ship. I want to develop a relatively simple API that lets me feed in a block of relative strengths (from minimum to maximum of what the radar chart allows) for all of the ship properties (some of which are simplifications of the underlying actual set of properties) and get back a ShipInfo class i can give to a PlayerShip class (that is the object that is instantiated to be a player ship). I can develop the code to do the transformations between simplified and actual properties myself, but i would like some recommendations as to what sort of architecture to provide to minimize the pain of interacting with this translator code (i.e. no methods with 5+ arguments or somesuch other nonsense). Does anyone have any ideas? *=not actually implemented yet, but that's the plan.

  I am planning on using Flash Builder 4/Flex to write an AIR application which is primarily based around recording, storing and analyzing data. I'll be creating charts etc that need to update in almost real time. It's essential to me that the application be able to function without an internet connection so I need a local database of some variety, but I would also eventually like to build in online synchronization of the data where either database can be update each other based on newer information. Moreover, some type of encryption would definitely be welcome, and speed is a large concern With all that in mind, what is my best approach to try and avoid headaches down the road?
