  I have downloaded .Net framework 4.5 and Visual Studio 2012 since it was released to MSDN subscribers on the 15th of August.For people that do not know about that yet please have a look at Jason Zander's excellent blog post .Since then I have been investigating the many new features that have been introduced in this release.In this post I will be looking into theIn order to follow along this post you must have Visual Studio 2012 and .Net Framework 4.5 installed in your machine.Download and install VS 20120 using this link.My machine runs on Windows 8 and Visual Studio 2012 works just fine. I have also installed in my machine SQL Server 2012 developer edition. I have also downloaded and installed AdventureWorksLT2012 database.You can download this database from the codeplex website.   Before I start showcasing the demo I want to say that I strongly believe that Entity Framework is maturing really fast and now at version 5.0 can be used as your data access layer in all your .Net projects.I have posted extensively about Entity Framework in my blog.Please find all the EF related posts here. In this demo I will show you how to split an entity model into multiple diagrams using the new enhanced EF designer. We will not build an application in this demo.Sometimes our model can become too large to edit or view.In earlier versions we could only have one diagram per EDMX file.In EF 5.0 we can split the model into more diagrams.1) Launch VS 2012. Express edition will work fine.2) Create a New Project. From the available templates choose a Web Forms application  3) Add a new item in your project, an ADO.Net Entity Data Model. I have named it AdventureWorksLT.edmx.Then we will create the model from the database and click Next.Create a new connection by specifying the SQL Server instance and the database name and click OK.Then click Next in the wizard.In the next screen of the wizard select all the tables from the database and hit Finish.4) It will take a while for our .edmx diagram to be created. When I select an Entity (e.g Customer) from my diagram and right click on it,a new option appears "Move to new Diagram".Make sure you have the Model Browser window open.Have a look at the picture below 5) When we do that a new diagram is created and our new Entity is moved there.Have a look at the picture below  6) We can also right-click and include the related entities. Have a look at the picture below. 7) When we do that the related entities are copied to the new diagram.Have a look at the picture below  8) Now we can cut (CTRL+X) the entities from Diagram2 and paste them back to Diagram1.9) Finally another great enhancement of the EF 5.0 designer is that you can change colors in the various entities that make up the model.Select the entities you want to change color, then in the Properties window choose the color of your choice. I store this dates in this format, but I would like to make a Date array from these numbers with the format 03/16 03/17 03/18 ... Until the String newDateStr it is working, I manage to change the type of the date. But I get syntax error: Type mismatch: Cannot convert from java.util.date to java.sql.data. I suspect the problem but if it is not possible, how can i do this?

  I have a gps time in the database,and when I do some query,I have to use the java.util.Date,however I found that I do not know how to change the gps time to java.util.Date. Here is a example: The readable time === The GPS time 2010-11-15 13:10:00 === 634254192000000000 2010-11-15 14:10:00 === 634254228000000000 The period of the two date is "36000000000",,obviously it stands for one hour,so I think the unit of the gps time in the db must be nanosecond. 1 hour =3600 seconds= 3600*1000 milliseconds == 3600*1000*10000 nanoseconds Then I try to convert the gps time: Take the " 634254228000000000" as example,it stands for("2010-11-15 14:10:00"); SimpleDateFormat sdf = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ssZ"); Date d = new Date(63425422800000L); System.out.println(sdf.format(d)); The result is 3979-11-15 13:00:00+0000. Of course it is wrong,then I try to calculate : 63425422800000/3600000/24/365=2011.xxx So it seems that the gps time here is not calcuated from Epoch(1970-01-01 00:00:00+0000). It maybe something like (0001-01-01 00:00:00+0000). Then I try to use the following method: Date date_0=sdf.parse("0001-01-01 00:00:00+0000"); Date d = new Date(63425422800000L); System.out.println(sdf.format(d.getTime() + date_0.getTime())); The result is: 2010-11-13 13:00:00+0000. :( Now I am confusing about how to calculate this gps time. Any suggestion?

  What would be the best approach to finding a date in a freeform text? A post where a user may place a date in it in several different ways such as: July 14th & 15th 7/14 & 7/15 7-14 & 7-15 Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th Saturday July 14th and 15th and so on. Is regex my best choice for this type of thing with preg_match? I would also like to search if there are two dates, one for a start date and a second for an end date, but in the text I'm searching there may be one date or two.   hello, i have created two create actions..one to call the create view and the other to process the create view using httppost. when i call the create view, it gets published correctly , dropdowns and all. the problem is that when i fill out the create form and click on the submit button, i get an error; Object reference not set to an instance of an object. My first thoughts are that i am passing a null model to the httppost create action.. How can i check to see if i am passing in a null model to the httppost create action? thanks

  Hi! I'm implementing a new machine learning algorithm in Java that extracts a prototype datastructure from a set of structured datasets (tree-structure). As im developing a generic library for that purpose, i kept my design independent from concrete data-representations like XML. My problem now is that I need a way to define a data model, which is basically a ruleset describing valid trees, against which a set of trees is being matched. I thought of using BNF or a similar dialect. Basically I need a way to iterate through the space of all valid TreeNodes defined by the ModelTree (Like a search through the search space for algorithms like A*) so that i can compare my set of concrete trees with the model. I know that I'll have to deal with infinite spaces there but first things first. I know, it's rather tricky (and my sentences are pretty bumpy) but I would appreciate any clues. • Excel parsing (xls) date error

  I'm working on a project where I have to parse excel files for a client to extract data. An odd thing is popping up here: when I parse a date in the format of 5/9 (may 9th) in the excel sheet, I get 39577 in my program. I'm not sure if the year is encoded here (it is 2008 for these sheets). Are these dates the number of days since some sort of epoch? Does anyone know how to convert these numbers to something meaningful? I'm not looking for a solution that would convert these properly at time of parsing from the excel file (we already have thousands of extracted files that required a human to select relevant information - re-doing the extraction is not an option).

• JIRA JQL searching by date - is there a way of getting Today() (Date) instead of Now() (DateTime)

  I am trying to create some Issue Filters in JIRA based on CreateDate. The only date/time function I can find is Now() and searches relative to that, i.e. "-1d", "-4d" etc. The only problem with this is that Now() is time specific so there is no way of getting a particular day's created issues. i.e. Created < Now() AND Created >= "-1d" when run at 2pm today will show all issues created from 2pm yesterday to 2pm today when run at 9am tomorrow will show all issues created from 9am today to 9am tomorrow What I want is to be able to search for all issues created from 00:00 to 23:59 on any day. Is this possible?

  I find examples and tutorials about models and about validation. And I places that say the validation (or most of it at least) should be in the model, which I agree with. But I can't any examples or tutorials that show how that should be done. Could anyone help me with a simple example on how that could be done? Where would you have the rules in the model? Where would the validation happen? How would the controller know if the validation passed or fail? How would the controller get error messages and things like that? Hope someone can help, cause feel a bit lost here :p

  Hi Rails'ers, I encountered some problem while trying to translate my model's names and attributes in a Rails 2.3.5 app. I have the following model: class BillingPlan < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :billing_option_id belongs_to :order belongs_to :user belongs_to :billing_option end When validation fails, my models attributes are translated correctly, but the modelname itself is not.   I am using Joda Time library to convert my String dates to a real date, because this seemed like the easiest solution to do this.   Hi All, I have an application that uses WPF Composite, and I have an issue. I've got a big database that is attached to the application and I need it exposed to different modules as part of the application. What is the best way to expose my Entity Framework model to all my different modules and views inside them? Do I have one EF model or a separate one for each module and then only the tables that each module needs. The only problem being that some tables have a relationship and will have different views and those views will be in different modules. Any ideas how to resolve this?

  Hello, I've been searching for quite a while now to find a way to limit wordpress tags by date and order them by the amount of times they appeared in the selected timeframe. But I've been rather unsuccesful. What I'm trying to achieve is something like the trending topics on Twitter. But in this case, 'trending tags'. By default the wordpress tagcloud displays the most popular tags of all time. Which makes no sense in my case, since I want to track current trends. Ideally it would be something like: Most popular tags of today Obama (18 mentions) New York (15 mentions) Iron Man (11 mentions) Robin Hood (7 mentions) And then multiplied for 'most popular this week' and 'most popular this month'. Does anyone know of a way to achieve this?

• What is the difference between MVC model 1 and model 2?

  I've recently discovered that MVC is supposed to have two different flavors, model one and model two. I'm supposed to give a presentation on MVC1 and I was instructed that "it's not the web based version, that is refered to as MVC2". As the presentations are about design patterns in general, I doubt that this separation is related to Java (I found some info on Sun's site, but it seemed far off) or ASP. I have a pretty good understanding of what MVC is and I've used several (web) frameworks that enforce it, but this terminology is new to me. How is the web-based version different from other MVC (I'm guessing GUI) implementations? Does it have something to do with the stateless nature of HTTP? Thanks, Alex

  I am making a Viewer model with belongs_to :users belongs_to :orders that joins the models Users and Orders with a :has_many :through => :viewers. And the Viewer model has the attributes of user_id and order_id. How would I set it up so that new viewers are only accepted if both user_id and order_id are unique in the same row? I remember in MySQL being able to do so with a flag (although I can't for the life of me remember what it was), but I'm not sure how to do it with Rails. Can I do something like (for Viewer.rb) validates_uniqueness_of :user_id, :scope => :order_id?
