  • Work from home on an iPad?

    The situation: My wife has a 13" MacBook Pro that she uses for email, Facebook, web surfing, and working from home. I'm about to buy us our first iPad. My wife's brother's computer just went belly-up, and she's contemplating giving him her MacBook and just using the iPad. The question is whether or not this is possible or realistic. Obviously, the iPad is well-suited for the email/web/Facebook tasks, but the working-from-home thing is an absolute must -- if the iPad can't handle that, it's a deal-breaker. For my wife, working from home means two things: Accessing her workplace computer's Windows Vista desktop, which she currently does via Remote Desktop. Editing Office documents locally, which she currently syncs via Dropbox. Being able to edit documents locally is important, because sometimes she will download documents and edit them when she doesn't have network access (e.g. on the subway). I'm more than happy to get a keyboard dock for her, so typing won't be an issue. Are there any iPad apps she can use to access her work computer and edit her work files? Thanks for any suggestions!

  • Hosting multiple websites from home

    I have just been accepted for Microsofts Wevsite Spark program which I mainly got for the tools, Visual Studio, Blend. I also have a few of my own websites, personal and a couple of business ones. I also work freelance and sometimes I would like a place to just put a demo up of a clients project. The websites I currently have are all on differnet hosting provders and domain registrars. The WebsiteSpark comes with Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008. It would be really advantagous of me to have all these in one place but also so I have complete control over the database and the environment. So I am thinking over the next 4-6 months of migrating all this to my own server that I will host from home, or maybe even setup at home and then store in a proper datacentre. I was wondering what steps I should take and what to be aware of, specifically: 1) having all these different websites on one computer and having the url got to the proper place. 2) Cost effectiveness? Having the server in home as apposed to datacentre. Most solutions I see charge over £1000 a month to have a machine in datacentre. This is mostly for my own ease of management and shared hosting which I currently have is very limited configuration wise. Would getting a server in house be beneficial for then upgrading to the cloud? What measures should I take with my ISP? I know this is a lot I've asked but just even links to good articles would be good. Thanks

  • SELinux - Allow multiple services access to same /home/dir

    I currently have SELinux enabled and have been able to configure apache to allow access to /home/src/web with a chcon command granting the 'httpd_sys_content_t' type. But now I am trying to serve the rsyslogd.conf file from the same directory, but every time I start rsyslogd I see an entry in my audit log saying that rsyslogd was denied access. My question is, is it possible to grant two applications the ability to access the same directory, while still keeping SELinux enabled? I wonder if there is a better approach?

If then during that page load a deployment occurs, the system tries to include() a file using the original full path and will get the new version of that file. We need it to get the old one from the old dir which has now moved as in: System starts page load and determines SYSTEM_ROOT_PATH constant to be /home/[XXX]/var_www/live or by using PHP's realpath() it could be /home/[XXX]/php_code/current. Symlink for /home/[XXX]/var_www/live get updated to point to /home/[XXX]/php_code/previous instead of /home/[XXX]/php_code/current where it did originally. System tries to load /home/[XXX]/var_www/live/something.php and gets /home/[XXX]/php_code/current/something.php instead of /home/[XXX]/php_code/previous/something.php I'm sorry if that is not explained very well. I'd really appreciate some ideas on how to get around this problem if someone can. Thank you.

  • I cannot connect to home server after a few hours

    I have an old PC and I decided to revive it. A LAMP (for my own use) and a P2P server (torrent and e2dk). My old PC is an AMD Athlon XP (1400 MHz) with 384 Mb of RAM First of all I installed Ubuntu Server 11.10, SSH, FTP, SAMBA and LAMP. With this configuration my home server works well, with no problem. Then I went to the P2P server and I tried rTorrent and then uTorrent Server Alpha. And here is my problem. After a few hours (maybe 10 hours, or maybe 30 hours) with the torrent app running (rTorrent or uTorrent) I lose the connection to my home server. That is, I cannot access via ssh, I cannot access the apache server, etc. but I can ping the home server. It seems that the server freezes and all I can do is reboot the server physically. So, I have two questions: What is the problem? and How can I solve it?

  • Is it possible to pull a webpage or content from the web into a widget on the android home screen

    Hi there. I have a php web page that will randomize an image that is 158x154. I was able to get the android application to work, but would also like to get it to work as a widget. How the heck can I get a widget to pull information from the net? I got the widget to work and layout correctly with a black sample image. I have tried to look at the wiki sample, but it is a bit too complicated for my little brain to grasp. The data that gets pulled looks something like: <html><body bgcolor="#000000">center> <a href="http://www.website.com" target="_blank"> <img border="0" src="http://www.webiste.com//0.gif"></a> <img src="http://www.webiste.com" style="border:none;" /> </center></body></html> Help please.     I have a typical semi advanced home network scenario: A cable modem - eth A wireless router (netgear n600) eth and wlan A home server (Running ubuntu 12.04 LTS, connected over wlan) A bunch of wireless clients (wlan) Lying around I have anoher cheaper wlan router, and two different USB wlan NIC's that are known to work with Linux. ACTA struck. I want to route ALL of my WAN traffic through a remote server through a VPN. For sake of completition, lets say there is a remote server running debian sqeeze where a VPN server is to be installed. The network is then to behave so that if the VPN is not operative, it is separated from the outside world. I am familiar with general system/network practices, but lack the specific detailed knowledge to accomplish this. Please suggest the right approach, packages and configurations you'd use to reach said solution. I've also envisioned the following network configuration, please improve it if you see fit: ==LAN== Client ip:10.1.1.x nm:255.0.0.0 gw:10.1.1.1 reached via WLAN Wlan router 1: ip: 10.1.1.1 nm:255.0.0.0 gw: 10.10.10.1 reached via ETH Homeserver: <<< VPN is initiated here, and the other endpoint is somewhere on the internet. eth0: ip:10.10.10.1 nm: 0.0.0.0 gw:192.168.0.1 reached via WLAN Homeserver: wlan0: ip: 192.168.0.2 nm: 255.255.255.0 gw: 192.168.0.1 reached via WLAN ==WAN== Wlan router 2: ip: 192.168.0.1 nm: 0.0.0.0 gw: set via dhcp uplink connector: cable modem Cable Modem: Remote DHCP. Because when making the build often it needs to install some special tools, and to install to the existing system. Using chroot avoids making any changes to the host system. To set up such a build environment, the first step is to make a chroot. I'm following the setup guide at https://wiki.debian.org/Schroot [wheezy-test] description=Contains the SPICE program aliases=test type=directory directory=/srv/chroot/test users=jsmith root-groups=root script-config=desktop/config personality=linux preserve-environment=true In the host on my setup the /home is on /dev/mapper. When schroot is entered, the same home is bind-mounted. Is there a way to avoid this? I prefer to use a different /home inside chroot. When changing the type from directory to plain, the binding is not performed. However that also loses /proc, /sys, etc. You'd have to manually bind-mount them. That does not seem to be a good solution. If a simple configuration change is unavailable, any idea where the script is for type=directory? Probably I'll manually modify the script.   • Unexpected deletion of directory

    I find that somehow the Downloads directory in /home/user/ is deleted. on using $locate Downloads, it shows the existence of directory without any existence of files within. now when i manually create directory named Downloads, $ locate Downloads shows the directory as well as the files the original folder had. also there is no hidden Downloads folder nor can i access the folder or its files this behavior is quite unexpected .... please help.

    Is an install of Windows 7 Home Premium Family Pack license upgradeable? Suppose I'm able to install Windows 7 Home Premium on my computer using a Family Pack key. Would I then be able to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate using the Anytime Upgrade option? Considering that the Family Pack only uses one key to activate three PCs, what happens when I upgrade one of those computers with Anytime Upgrade? Would I be able to use the Anytime Upgrade key on all three computers? Or just one computer? Is upgrading this license key even possible?

  • Most basic, low power home surveillance system

    I am thinking of setting up a simple but effective surveillance system for my house that is: Very low powered (preferably no PCs left running out of stand-by mode) Cheap. When motion (or sound) is detected, I would like it to: Send an email/phone alert to me Record and upload video to the web (in case they steal the camera) So I imagine a system where I leave a netbook PC in stand-by mode and have it woken up by a motion detector. This initiates software to send alerts and periodically upload recorded video to the web. The software part is easy for me, but I'm not really a gadget-man so I'd like some advice on using a motion sensor of some sort to wake up the PC. Does anyone have some good advice?   • pure-ftpd: one readonly/non-deletable file in home directory

    Is there a way to have a file in the user's FTP home directory without the ability to modify/remove it from that directory over FTP? So the user has write permissions on his own home folder, thus the ability to remove files. An exception should be made for a single file, which has the same filename and contents for each account. The solution I'm thinking of right now to run a periodic script to check the presence of that file, and if not, put it back. But I wonder whether there's a better solution than this.

I know that I have to add a line in a .bashrc file (or .profile, or .bash_profile) I´ve created all those files, at different times but nothing... I´m a new mac user, but I use Linux too and I dont know what happened, I just need to export java home to perform my work... and is really necessary for me to add environment variables too. I like to have a graph view (e.g. as in Task Manager) but also nice are tool that lets me see what IP/port that's incoming/outgoing. Command line is fine. Or even some tutorial. Thanks.   • Restore Default OSX Home Folder Icons

    I want to keep folders such as Pictures and Documents in my home folder in sync between computers; at the moment, I'm using Dropbox to do this. On Computer A I added a symlink to the folders in my home directory to the Dropbox folder. On Computer B I deleted the existing Pictures and Documents folders and replaced them with symlinks to the folders in the Dropbox folder. This works very well, except that in Finder I don't see the nice little icons that Lion has by default for folders of a particular kind. Is there any way to restore these?

    Hello! At home we have a wireless router that my family want to use. We have our main computer physically connected to the router, and my laptop is connected wirelessly. When the network is like this then it is faultless. However, when my brother introduces is Apple MAC into the equation, both my laptop and the family machine gets all sorts of problems, primarily long load times and timeouts. The MAC, however, works fine. I think I've read something here or SF about a MAC continusly pinging a router which times it out, but I've not found any solution so far.     Here's a crude representation of what I've got at home: floor 2 INTERNETS ---- MODEM/ROUTER ---- MY COMPUTER | floor 1 WIFI REPEATER ---- stuff | floor 0 more stuff TELEVISION Now, as part of our sat tv subscription we can get an additional service if we connect our decoder (located by TELEVISION obviously) to the internet. What they suggest is buying a Netgear 3DHD WIRELESS HOME THEATER NETWORKING KIT holy shit isn't my bullshit-o-meter flying high right now from the general buzzwordyness of this thing. What does this thing actually do that our existing wireless-enabled routers don't do? What's the point of having a third wifi router in the same house, this time only for one television? If I do decide to plunge €99 for this, should I connect it to the wifi repeater (which does not provide AAA quality internet, at least for all gaming purposes) or to my modem/router (risking issues with low signal?).

    I installed MacPorts on OS X 10.5 and I found out that when I connect to the computer using SSH and use mc - Midnight Commander - the HOME and END keys do not work. I have to mention that I'm using putty and I am able to use the keyboard very well on Linux machines like Fedora, Ubuntu,... Here is putty keyboard configuration (a configuration I found to be optimal over time): Backspace key: 127 Home/End keys: Standard Function keys: Xterm R6 Cursor keys: Normal Numpad: normal Terminal type string: xterm-color I'm looking for a command line solution/script that does these changes, this make much easier to create a prepare OS script for configuring a new OS.

  • Macbook Pro keyboard with BootCamp - missing the Home/End/PageUp/PageDown keys

    Last year I converted from Windows to a MacBook Pro and went through the process of learning the ways of the Mac keyboard. In particular, I learned that Ctrl-left and Ctrl-right were the Mac way of doing Home and End. I'm now doing a project on Windows 7 on Bootcamp, and finding that I'm missing the Windows Home and End keys in a completely different way -- they don't exist, but the Mac combos don't work either. Any suggestions for getting this functionality somehow? Code editing is a real drag without these keys.

  • Reinstalled Windows XP Home, shows as XP Pro, 'invalid' errors

    We reinstalled Windows XP Home after hard drive crash. The system now shows as XP Pro and we're constantly getting 'invalid software' popups, images show in solid black. We called Microsoft, they said the serial number is valid etc. We're assuming that the pop ups are because that it is now XP Pro instead of Home. Or could it be something else? Or how can we determine what the issue is in order to correct it? Thanks for any advice on this. jb
