• How to roll-your-own live CD for safe home browsing

  Hi, I'm interested in booting-off-flash (i.e. like livecd) for more secure online banking at home. -I like system rescue CD, but AFAIK it doesn't have the wifi drivers. (These are convenient) -ubuntu live cd has the wi-fi drivers, but also has a lot of stuff I don't need -I'd like a way to save some basic config settings (e.g. wifi SSID and passphrase), so that wifi works upon startup, i.e. without having to re-enter the settings. What's the best way to 'roll my own slightly-customized boot-from-flash live cd? thanks, bill

• Not able to find IIS Manager and enable IIS in Windows7 Home Basic

  I enabled IIS services in the add/remove windows components. However, when i want to open the manager, the IIS Manager does not appear under the administrative tools on the control panel. If i type the shortcut "inetmgr" into the run block it doesn't find it. However, i know the service installed correctly. It is a very frustrating problem since everyone says find it here or here but no one gives any help on what to do if is doesn't appear in the said locations at all. Can anyone please help me? The system i am using is Windows 7 home basic. The service installed correctly but i cannot find the IIS Manager.

  Background: I have tried to use routers, but so far all of them can't handle the bandwidth, number of connections eventually limited by the hardware resources, so overall the home routers are decreasing the internet speed. I went through DD-WRT and stuff like that. Question: What I want is to use my Windows7 PC as router. It has 2 LAN cards. I'm going to connect to this router another desktop 2 pcs and notebook through wireless router. The main question is what is the most efficient way to turn this Windows7 box(and I need Windows for native NTFS support) into router with NAT/Routing/Firewall functionality? Is there any routing software recommended for this purpose or I should just use windows native "Internet Sharing"? I'm going to run SIP phones in the LAN, so I need friendly NAT(Full cone perhaps). Also I'm going to have FTP server on that Windows7 "server" PC. As firewall I'm thinking about Comodo. Need to drop all incoming, unless explicitly allowed.

I read somewhere in forum that I have to make my C: logical and then I'd be able to split C: I did the same thing using Partition Wizard. I made C: of 125 GB and shift rest of the space in New drive. I made a bootable disk, performed all the task using partition Wizard After that I have not been able to boot my windows. Even after running system restore several times.

These keys works fine with tcsh and zsh, but not with ksh (print a tilda ~) I found this: bind '^[[3'=prefix-2 bind '^[[3~'=delete-char-forward bind '^[[1'=prefix-2 bind '^[[1~'=beginning-of-line bind '^[[4'=prefix-2 bind '^[[4~'=end-of-line But when I set one bindkey, the last does not work anymore. How can I use these keys in ksh with a .kshrc ? Thanks.

  Hello, What is a good MTA (e.g. Postfix or something else) setup for a home computer behind a NAT, or a laptop that connects to various different wifi networks? I've read a lot of Postfix tutorials on how to set it up this way or that, but they are usually geared towards computers that are servers ie they have a static IP have a domain name are always connected to the same network My requirements are, I guess: Ability to forward mail for "root" to another server of my choosing. No listening for incoming SMTP connections - outgoing only Ability to route outgoing mail via an external SMTP server with authentication (and perhaps encryption) If not Postfix, I need an MTA which can queue up mails in case it temporarily has no internet connection.

  Hello, I am having windows vista home premium OS on my laptop. I am having a windows VPN setup too. All of a sudden my vpn doesnt work when my PC resumed from stand by mode. I tried all options but still I am getting that error. CoId={5B82082D-9236-4AF9-900B-4E8072341C76}: The user workgroup\user dialed a connection named VPNName which has failed. The error code returned on failure is 0. I am also getting the following error when I verified the event logs The user workgroup\user dialed a connection named VpnName which has failed. • Development Server Blocked Only from Home

  Recently I've been having an issue with my CentOS 6 test server running Apache and Webmin running on port 10000 where when I try accessing any part of the server - SSH/FTP and even my domains (I have two - both keep getting timeout errors) when I try accessing from any computer on my home network. However when I access via tethering or via my office networks everything loads fine. While the firewall is the first issue at mind, my router never was set to block any special ports, and even after adding port 10000 as a specific exception I'm having no luck. Also, I doubt this is an IP blacklisting issue because I have websites on other servers using CloudFlare for security and I haven't gotten any warnings. Any assistance is greatly apprecaiated. UPDATE: Just some extra details about the issue: My ISP to my knowledge only blocks off ports 25 and 80 for residential users to prevent them from running web servers - however this issue has only come up a day or two ago, before that I was using the server successfully for months. Also the server is not physically located in any of my workspaces - it's a VPS housed in a datacenter

  Hi! I have public IP 89.103.xxx.yyy, then router and home network with 192.168.1.zz My router is set to portforward every 8056 on ip adress 192.168.1.5 (my PC), where apache is running. Apache listen is set to: Listen 127.0.0.1:80 Listen 192.168.1.5:8056 When i try: Listen 89.103.xxx.yyy:8056 I get message "unexpected end of apache" (I'm using easyphp for windows). Added: When i try to access 89.103.xxx.yyy via browser, it's prompting router request for authorization to access router web-settings. And when i try 89.103.xxx.yyy:8056, browser says that connection timed out =(

• Upgrading my home network to Gigabit Ethernet and Wireless-N turns out slower than before

  My home network has three desktops, three laptops and some NAS drives. All desktops and NAS drives support Gigabit LAN and all laptops support Wireless-N. I was running a 100 BaseT switch though. I recently purchased a Gigabit Ethernet Switch and an Wireless-N ADSL Modem-Router. After upgrading, I noticed that the wireless file transfer speeds from laptop-to-NAS and vice versa became terribly slow. Possibly even slower than before the upgrade. The transfer speeds from desktop-to-NAS (wired) have improved though. As an example, copying a 50GB file from laptop-to-NAS was estimated at 15 hours! Is there something I can do to improve this? Also, should I consider buying a dedicated wireless access point for speed rather than using the Wireless modem-router?

I believe self-signed certificates are a bad idea so i was wondering how this actually work to have one installed on my server. This server is currently being accessed being outside.. this is basically for learning/pratical purpose. So if i understand correctly, it is possible OR do we have to buy an SSL certificate somewhere and install it on the server for use ? (by importing it in IIS) what are the actual brief steps ?   I have a Linksys router and a Belkin wireless router at home. The Linksys router is connected to cable modem and two computers, as well as to the Belkin wireless router. A 3rd computer is connected to the Belkin router through Wifi. The IP addresses of the computers connected to Linksys are 192.168.1.101 and 192.168.1.102. The IP address of the Linksys router on LAN is 192.168.1.1. The IP address of the Belkin wireless router is 192.168.2.1(based on the 3rd computer's routing table) and the IP address of the 3rd computer is 192.168.2.5. If I ping 192.168.1.101 from 192.168.2.5, all are well. However, if I ping 192.168.2.5 from 192.168.1.101, Destination Host Unreachable. Why?

  I have a full system image using Acronis True Image Home 10 and want to run it as a virtual machine on Windows 7 Professional. I have created a virtual machine but Windows Virtual PC doesn't allow access to a USB external hard disk when booting from the Acronis Recovery CD. I've copied the backup onto the host machine and I can access it via the network using the Acronis boot CD but I'm wondering if there is an easier way? Does any other free Virtual Machine software support USB devices during boot (i.e. I can restore a backup image from the USB hard disk directly)

  I am trying to install MS SQL Database 2005 on Windows XP Home SP3. It fails giving no reason ("Database failed to install"), then exits. I had already installed MS SQL Database Express Edition 2008 during 2005 setup. But when I removed 2008 one and tried to install 2005 afterwards it still failed with same error. The error happens when I am trying to install Dragon Age Toolset or Visual 2008 Pro edition.   If I've got a typical home router -- say a Net Gear -- which has certain ports forwarded to a internal server, is there a way to tweak the router to let me access that internal server using the external IP address from within the same network? Is there a non-enterprise grade router that can handle this type of thing? In case that was strangely worded, let me re-phrase with an example. My external IP is 1.2.3.4. My internal server is 10.4.3.100 Port 1178 is being forwarded from the router to 10.4.3.100. I'd like to be able to be able to hit 10.4.3.100 from an internal ip of 10.4.3.10 by using the external ip of 1.2.3.4. Possible?

  I'm trying to understand exactly what IIS 6.0 (on Windows Server 2003) does when I change the "Local Path" of a web site's Home Directory while the site is running. (Specifically with regard to ASP.NET applications.) I'm trying to build support for or against this practice in a deployment scenario: e.g. deploy the new code alongside the old code, then simply switch the IIS web site's local path to the folder containing the new code. IIS seems to handle this gracefully, but I notice that w3wp.exe still keeps some handles on the old code folder after the change. That's strange to me, because I would have expected IIS to recycle the application pool if this happened. Is this safe? Is the behavior well-defined?

• Windows Home Server backup recovery missing driver for USB Device

  I'm doing a backup recovery of a Windows 7 PC from the backup on Windows Home Server. I've done this before and am accustomed to the prompt to load drivers for devices such as the NIC from a USB flash drive, which I have all loaded up with the drivers from the special folder in the WHS backup repository for this PC. My problem on this PC is that one of the drivers the recovery CD complains is missing is "USB Device", and it fails to find the drivers when I click the button to scan for and install drivers. So it seems it can't access the USB flash drive to load the other drivers. Any suggestions? I think my next step is to pull a DVD drive from another system and plug it in with a CD burned with the device drivers.

  Is there any way to have Windows 7 hibernate Bob's account when switched to Mary's account and vice versa? I.e.: Bob is logged in Bob clicks Start shutdown switch user Bob's session is saved to disk Mary logs in Mary's session is restored as it was when Bob's turn started Both are heavy users (30+ chrome tabs open, multiple documents, multiple spreadsheets, music playing, etc) I would like to set up the system so that each gets the full use of the computer while still having all their open apps the way they left them. I suppose I could try setting up a VM for each, but I'd rather not add anything else to the mix here if I don't have to. This is Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit running on a Lenovo G550 laptop

• Logout trouble with alternative shells (Win7 Home Premium x64)

  I've tried bb4win and Litestep, and every time I need to log out for some reason (shutdown and all included), the system hangs and the spinning icon next to the "Logging out" text stops spinning. Changing the shell in registry for both local machine and current user causes this behavior. Any ideas on what might cause this? Alternatvely, what steps can I take to figure out what is going wrong? In Linux, you are able to open things in a framebuffer and examine the output, but with Windows it is not so clear to me how to see what is happening under the hood, especially with this Home Premuim version. Update: Since logging out normally to switch the shell back to Explorer doesn't work normally, I have to end Litestep first. However, when I do so, an Explorer navigation window pops up (not the taskbar). This also occurs with bb4win.
