  The Square Reader is a tiny magnetic credit card reader that has taken the mobile payment industry by storm. This clever hack dumps the credit card reading in favor of snagging the audio from old music reels. Evan Long was curious about whether the through-the-headphones interface of the Square Reader could be used to read audio data off old magnetic recordings. With a very small modification (he had to bend a metal tab inside the reader to allow the audio tape to slide through more easily) he was able to listen to and record audio off old reels. • Beta Testing iOS Application

  I was wondering if it is advisable to get a small team of beta testers for an iOS application that will be released to the App Store. I am developing an iOS application and I have setup a beta application form however I was wondering if it is advisable to even do beta testing considering I am actively testing and using my application on all of my own iOS devices (iPad 2, 2 iPod Touches and an iPhone 4 (plus, of course iOS Simulator)) - all running various versions of iOS 4. My question is: would you advise someone to get beta testers for an iOS application and, if so, how would you advise them to go about getting testers. This was the one that was five minutes, in which I explained Collation using examples comparing US English, UK English and Australian English. At the end, I showed my Arsenal thongs.   Hey guys, I'm debating myself about memory allocation on iOS. I write most of my code in C++ and I really like using ObjectPools, FreeLists, etc. In order to pre-allocate a lot of the stuff that I'll be constantly "alloc/dealloc" during the course of my game, ( like particles, game entities, etc ). Still on iOS, it's not like we are developing for a console like PSP, where I can know for fact that I'll get a fixed amount of memory. iOS , will issue "memory warnings" when the system needs memory. Does anyone have some suggestions about this ? Is it too serious since the new iPod touch/iPhone 4 are carrying more RAM ? or it's still a big concern ? Thanks!

This is not a duplicate, it is true that there are several of them about ios5 but not one of them asks specifically about music syncing or ubuntu oneiric ocelot... I'm just so angry at Apple because of this, my iPod classic syncs just fine with Banshee but my iPad 2 won't, because they suddenly decided to change how uploading music to their app works in ios5. I looked around and saw that an unstable libimobiledevice-1.1.2. was available, but I can't manage to install it! It's a nightmare, any help would be greatly appreciated.

  I have a Internal Audio Hardware card and my Laptop (Lenevo IdeaPad) presents a single slot as a combo Microphone and headphone jack. On Windows, I attach my ipod headphone to jack and speak directly to my computer. I assume there is a microphone which is listening to my voice and I can communicate two-way. On Ubuntu, the microphone always seem to be listening to random noise. So any input by speaking to the computer is not possible. What could be the reason and how do I troubleshoot this?

  I know it is goofy to geek out about such things, but I am a pretty goofy geek.  Today we published support for the Apple icons for devices like the iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.  Now when you add Geekswithblogs.net to your home screen (via the little + in Safari) it will load the icon to the left instead of a screenshot of the site.  We have been using my iPhone and iPad to surf to GWB for awhile and we were tired of that screenshot.  Simple Google/Bing search and a little Photoshop CS5 (Amazing!!!) work and there it is.  Next step we are taking in the Apple iPad/Phone arena is getting our developer kit and seeing what possiblities there are for Geekswithblogs.net and a custom App.  Got any ideas?   I have an external copy of Windows 7 alongside Quantal and I installed Content Manager Assistant on it. I was able to start the program successfully by finding the Executable file of the program in the program folder in Windows and run it in Wine, however Wine didn't recognize my PSVita that was connected through one of my USB ports. Is there any way to configure WINE to properly recognize the Vita? Content Manager Assistant is a Windows and Mac only program that allows you to transfer files between your PC and PSVita, kinda like iTunes for iPod.

• If an app runs well on iPhone 3GS with iOS 5.1, how to know that it runs well on iOS 4.3? [closed]

  I bought an iPhone 3GS just to test backward compatibility of apps that I developed, but it arrived preinstalled with iOS 5.1. So even if an app runs well on iPhone 3GS and iOS 5.1 with its hardware limitation, how can we tell that it runs well even on iPhone 3GS with iOS 4.3? Will it actually be better to install iOS 4.3 on the phone so that we know even the older iOS can support it, so the newer iOS will work well supposedly? Or is there a need to buy yet another iPhone 3GS and install 4.3 on one and 5.1 on the other? (my assumption is that if we set the app's build target iOS to 4.3, the iPhone 3G won't be able to install it, because iPhone 3G only runs iOS up to 4.2. So the target device is 3GS but not earlier. But it will exclude iPod Touch 2nd Generation as well because they also can only support iOS up to 4.2 only)

• Toshiba Satellite a300 with Maverick keeps crashing.

  I just installed 10.10 on my girlfriends Toshiba Satellite a300 and for about two days it has been working just fine for two days but today it started acting pretty wonky. Several times over the machine just dies as if it didn't have a battery and someone yanked out the power supply. After such a crash I'll have to wait a while before powering it up again or it will die before it even reaches the startup screen. It sort of seems like it's reacting to something I do. I kept it on for several hours while we were out of the house and it was still fine when I came back. I haven't been doing anything I can imagine is especially CPU-intensive when the crashes occur, but I have been trying to set up her iPod with Rythmbox and / or Banshee. If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd be very grateful.

The photos from the iOS were successfully uploaded, but in Ubuntu One, although it shows the "syncing" and "synchronized" marks over the icons, the files are not showing in the website (one.ubuntu.com). In short: My files are not showing in the Ubuntu One website, although the icons have the "uploaded" mark. Any idea what can be wrong here? obs1: Also, not sure if it's related, the icon-marks will show only when I open the Ubuntu One Control Panel. It shows the message "file was uploaded", but there's nothing online. obs2: The folder I'm trying to synchronize is 30mb size. And my connection is 8mbps.

• Do I need to notify a user if I am using statistics software in an iPhone app?

  Hello, I am currently creating a (very simple) Objective-C client to send basic statistical data to my server for an iPhone app - just things like the state of the app (first-launch or launch, error, etc), along with the make/model/version (i.e.: "iPod touch 4.2"). No personally identifiable information or location data is sent. Is there anything, in the Apple Developer agreement or otherwise, that states that I must notify the user if I am doing this? I'm not interested in selling the data or anything, I just want to use the data to make my apps better. I am not adverse to telling the user I am doing this if it is required, I just don't want to scare the users (the paranoid "oooh, they're tracking me, they know exactly where I am" crowd) if I don't have to. • Can't Boot Ubuntu, video drivers or x-server problem?

  I was uninstalling some programs that I installed to try and get my iPod touch working with Ubuntu (I gave up on that) when ubuntu just crashed. Now after I choose ubuntu in GRUB, it gives me a screen that says "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode: your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself" It was working just fine before I started to uninstall those programs. I think that I might have uninstalled something necessary to the system. If I click OK on the screen, it gives me options to reconfigure, troubleshoot, exit to console, or restart X. But no matter what I choose I still can't boot into ubuntu - I get stuck looking at the splash screen which stalls forever. I was receiving support from one of my mate's and he was doing something with the LiveCD, and now the message doesn't pop up any more, I just get stuck at a never ending splash screen. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

  I am interested in how each individual smart phone is allowed to handle data transfers within a third-party app. I am interested in designing apps that allow customers to update, transfer, download, etc. data from their smart phone to their personal computer and vice-versa. (Ranging from just text, to XML, to a Relational Database) I only have experience with the Ipod Touch before and one particular app that maintained all the data on an online server, so to update the data on your pc or iphone you had to go online, are there other ways to do it? Like bluetooth, wireless LAN, USB, etc? I believe Apple has certain policies on this in order to control the App Store and individual Iphones. I suppose each company has a particular policy on how an app is allowed to transfer data to another system, does anyone have a good understanding of this? Thank you.
