  • Database/Object Mapping

    Hello everyone, This is a beginner question, but it's been frustrating me... I am using C#, by the way. I'd like to make a few classes, each with their own properties and methods. I would also like to have a database to store certain instances of these classes in case I would ever need to look at them again. So, for example... class Polygon { String name; Double perimiter; int numSides; public Double GetArea() { // ... } } class Circle { String name; Double radius; public void PrintName() { // ... } } Say I've got these classes. I also want a database that has the TABLES "Polygon" and "Circle" with the COLUMNS "name" "perimeter" "radius" etc. And I want an easy way to save a class instance into the database, or pull a class instance out of the database. I have previously been using MS Access for my database stuff, which I don't mind using, but I would prefer if nothing other than .NET need to be installed. I've been researching online a bit, but I wanted to get some opinions on here. I have looked at Linq-to-Sql, but it seems you need Sql-Server. Is this true? If so, I'd really rather not use it because I don't want to have to have it installed everywhere. Anway, I'm just fishing for some ideas/insights/suggestions/etc. so please help me out if you can.   • creating an object within a function of a program

    could someone please tell me what I need to do in order to create an object in a function. I will try to explain by making up some sort of example... Let's say I have a program named TimeScheduler.cpp that implements the class Schedule.h (and I have the implementation in a separate file Schedule.cpp where we define the methods). In the declaration file we have declared two constructors Schedule(); //the default and Schedule(int, int, int);//accepts three arguments to get to the point--let's say in the main program file TimeScheduler.cpp we created our own functions in this program apart from the functions inherited from the class Schedule. so we have our prototypes listed at the top. /*prototypes*/ void makeSomeTime(); etc..... we have main(){ //etc etc... } we then define these program functions void makeSomeTime(){ //process } let's say that inside the function makeSomeTime(), we would like to create an array of Schedule objects like this Schedule ob[]={ summer(5,14, 49), fall(9,25,50) }; what do I have to do to the function makeSomeTime() in order for it to allow me to create this array of objects. The reason I ask is currently i'm having difficulty with my own program in that it WILL allow me to create this array of objects in main()....but NOT in a function like I just gave an example of. The strange thing is it will allow me to create a dynamic array of objects in the function..... like Schedule *ob = new Schedule[n+1]; ob[2]= Schedule(x,y,z); Why would it let me assign to a non-dynamic array in main(), but not let me do that in the function?

    I am attempting to learn how to program. I really do want to learn how to program; I love the building and design aspect of it. However, in Java and Python, I have tried and failed with programs as they pertain to objects, classes, methods.. I am trying to develop some code for a program, but im stumped. I know this is a simple error. However I am lost!     Hello, I'm using Sharepoint 2010 Object Model. I'm trying to retrive the content of a Custom List. Everything works fine except if when I try to retrieve a Choice Field. When I try to retrieve the choice field, I got an PropertyOrFieldNotInitializedException exception...   • System.Reflection - Global methods aren't available for reflection

    I have an issue with a semantic gap between the CLR and System.Reflection. System.Reflection does not (AFAIK) support reflecting on global methods in an assembly. At the assembly level, I must start with the root types. My compiler can produce assemblies with global methods, and my standard bootstrap lib is a dll that includes some global methods. My compiler uses System.Reflection to import assembly metadata at compile time. It seems if I depend on System.Reflection, global methods are not a possibility. The cleanest solution is to convert all of my standard methods to class static methods, but the point is, my language allows global methods, and the CLR supports it, but System.Reflection leaves a gap. ildasm shows the global methods just fine, but I assume it does not use System.Reflection itself and goes right to the metadata and bytecode. Besides System.Reflection, is anyone aware of any other 3rd party reflection or disassembly libs that I could make use of (assuming I will eventually release my compiler as free, BSD licensed open source).

    Which is the right/best tag to use in my HTML file when I want to display the Adobe PDF viewer? Right now I'm using the code below, but there are weird side effects (e.g. it seems to steal the starting focus that I've set to another INPUT text box; it doesn't seem to play real well with the jQueryUI Resizeable class; etc.) <embed src="abc.pdf" type="application/pdf" /> Could I even do the same thing with the OBJECT tag? Are there advantages/disadvantages to using one tag vs. the other?

    Hey so I get this error in this code: Private Sub Request_Stuff_button_Click() Call Main.createObjects Call My_Control.requestStuff End Sub at the 'Call My_Control.requestStuff' line. The 'Main' module looks like this: Public My_Control As ControlObject Public Sub createObjects() If My_Control Is Nothing Then Set My_Control = New ControlObject End If End Sub The weirdest thing is that when I add Dim x As Integer x = My_Control.dummyInt right before the line that gets me the error, x gets the correct value right before the error happens which means My_Control is definitely an object and is definitely not nothing. This error is killing me, thanks in advance.

As this is the case how can it be avoided when creating objects and how can one model objects to take this into account. I have a ListBox in Class1 view which displays Class2. How to map the output of the ListBox back to IList Class2s property of Class1? I am able to display the values in the ListBox but unable to map back the SelectListItem to IList.

    In the system which I'm currently developing I often have to navigate an object tree and based on its state and values take actions. In normal Java this results in tedious for loops, if statements etc... Are there alternative ways to achieve tree navigation, similar to XPath for XML? I know there is JXPath and OGNL, but do you know any other libraries for such purpose? Do you know any libraries which generate bytecodes for specific tree navigation expressions to make the processing as fast as Java native fors and ifs?

And I'm trying to guess where this restriction came from and have no ideas.

    We have a serial port which is connected to hundreds of physical devices on the same wire. We have protocols like Modbus and Hart to handle the request and response between the application and devices. The question is related to managing the reference count of the channel.     Hi, I am new to NHibernate and need some information regarding the internal working of the engine: I have a table called Student and the design is as follows: RollNo Name City Postcode and there are 5 more columns like this. I have School class and mappings associated with it. I am querying RollNo and Name using session as given below: IQuery query = session.CreateQuery("SELECT RollNo,Name FROM Student); Executing query.List resulting in error because the query is returning object[][]. Now, I changed the query as given below: IQuery query = session.CreateQuery("FROM Student); Executing query.List on this query yeilds the desired results. But, the results contain more data than I want. Could you please let me know the query to which I can get RollNo and Name from Student and castable as Student collection. Thanks, Mahesh

    Hello all, I was wondering what is the better method for Casting objects for C#: MyClassName test = (MyClassName)object; MyClassName test = object as MyClassName; I know already that if you do the first way, you get an exception, and the second way it sets test as null. However, I was wondering why do one over the other? I see the first way a lot, but I like how the second way because then I can check for null... If there isn't a 'better way' of doing it, what are the guidelines for using one way or the other?

  • Hibernate -using Table per subclass - how to link an existing superclass object to a sibclass object

    Hi, I have a User hibernate class, Clerk class and Consumer class. All these maps to their own tables in database. The User PK also acts as Clerk's and Consumer's PK. So now my problem is that if a user is initially a Clerk, he has a record in Users table and Clerks table. If that user wants to become a consumer, I want to link that User's record to the new Consumer's record. So even if I pass the userId to the consumer's record, it treats it as a new User to be persisted and gives a duplicate_key exception. How do I tell Hiernate to link the same user object with this new Consumer object. Thanks in advance, -Chandni

  • Simple way to reorder methods of a Java class in IntelliJ?

    Is there a simpler way of reordering methods within a class source file in IntelliJ than cutting and pasting the code manually? Nowadays I often need this while refactoring legacy code, e.g. to move related methods close to each other in the source code. In Eclipse AFAIK there is a view similar to the Structure view of IntelliJ, where I can drag and drop methods around. However, this does not work in IntelliJ and I couldn't find any hints from its help either. I am using IntelliJ 9.0.2 to be specific.

Is it still good to have two separate classes only to split some code into two parts and to separate functional elements?

  • Background & Research Methods section (Writing an Article)

    It is my first time writing an article on a software project. I am supposed to use ACM UbiComp paper format. I already have a structure that I should follow and there is a Background & Research Methods section after Abstract, Introduction, Related Work sections. I have browser through several articles, but some of them either dont have it, have only background section or have only research methods section. I am having hard time to find an article that has this section and moreover what I must write on here. My project is about Bluetooth location tracking and I do have the implementation and evaluation, so it is not something theoretical.
