  Hi All, I need to program a very huge web site. The site should contain public part with search engine, user registration forms, cart and all other stuff. The private part should contain administrative web application with a lot of data grids, complex edit forms, security checks, services and so on. Also I need very good support for html mailing and pdf exports. Web services are also required. I am considering to use jsf. Can you recommend me books or other stuff where I can find all this info for building what i need? Is seam good option for this? I have looked their site and page seam on production. The sites listed there are far from professional and enterprise. Is there any book that explains how to build complete web site with jsf technology from login, security, sending mails, pdf conversion, time dependent background processes and everything else that big sites needs. I do not have time reading 20 books. In every php book all this stuff is explained but I have not seen a single java book that at least from high view will explain all of this. Regards

  Shouldn't storage classes be taught early in a C class or book? I notice that a lot of books, even some of the better ones, covert it toward and end of the book and some books just add it as an appendix. I would teach it together with variables. This is so foundational and I think unfortunately many do not make it that far in a book. Now that auto has a different meaning (vs being optional) it may confuse people that didn't realize it has always been there. for example: C Programming: A Modern Approach 18.2 Storage Classes 401 Properties of Variables 401 The auto Storage Class 402 The static Storage Class 403 The extern Storage Class 404 The register Storage Class 405 The Storage Class of a Function 406 Summary 407

• Is "PHP and MySQL Web Development, 4th ed." an outdated book to learn from?

  I want to get into web stuff, and thought of going with PHP+MySQL. I have experience in C#, C++, desktop graphics, but no web stuff besides HTML, CSS which I started learning 2 months ago. On SO PHP-book question, the highest rated book is "PHP Objects, Patterns and Practice". However, I'm not sure if it's a book to start PHP with... or is it? Most of the books mentioned in that SO question seem to be for those who already know PHP. I considered "PHP & MySQL Web Development, 4th Ed.", but someone mentioned that "it uses the mysql_* functions which are almost deprecated." Help?

• How do you choose a programming/data structure/algorithm book?

  I really should not be mentioning the name of the book, but the first time I read it (during my under-grad days) I almost concluded that data structure was a bad course to pick. Which brings me to the question I am asking here. What makes a programming or data structure or algorithm book tick? Clearly, lucid explanation is one. But I also realize that organization of the material is very important and so is diagrams. What else? Some pointers would obviously help when I hang out in my neighborhood computer book shop the next time.

  When I did my undergraduate studies in elecrical engineering, there was this book called "Basic Electricity" by Van Valkenburgh. If you read that book cover to cover, your fundamentals in electrical engineering would be bulletproof. I would recommend it all my juniors and I absolutely loved it. Is there such a book in the field of computer science? I am not so concerned about the algorithms. I am looking more into something that tells me how does everything work beneath the covers. TCPIP, memory management, DNS, routing, SSL, buffer, queuing etc.

  Joel mentions in several of his blog posts that it is very important for a developer/software entrepreneur to have solid understanding of Economics. Yet the Fog Creek MBA book reading list does not include any Economics books. Is there any good material that people can recommend? Obviously, I am not as concerned about mathematical treatise as foundations and basic principles. For example, I was able to find a very good high-level read on Macroeconomics: Concise Guide to Macroeconomics but I am yet to find anything similar on Microeconomics. Any suggestions and reading pointers would be highly appreciated.

• Flash AS3 Coloring Book - Movieclip only clickable in certain spots (Event Listeners)

  I am working on a coloring book and have a movieclip (outlines) containing many movieclips that can be changed to whatever color the user has selected. However it seems like some of the movieclips can be clicked anywhere and work great, and others you need to click a certain spot for it to color in. I have an example here: http://jeffkilroy.com/hosted/softee/coloring.html Notice the three sections of the icecream (top, middle, bottom). The middle is clickable from anywhere inside the movieclip, however the top and especially bottom require you to click on specific spots in order for you to activate the event listener. Not sure if it is a depth issue because I would assume if that is the case it would activate at least a different movieclip but it just seems nothing happens at all.   going through both the django book and tutorial, am a bit confused to the differences in approach (aren't they both written by the same people?) can anyone who has experience in both give a short review on them? i have decent python skills (largely untested though), but no experience at all in web apps and am trying to decide which one to stick to. i briefly looked in to practical django projects but that was a bit too complicated for me, my background is primarily bash scripting, the python i know i learned from an instant hacking tutorial and diving into python.

  This is a shameless information gathering exercise for my own book. One of the talks I give in the community is an introduction to web site vulnerabilities. Usually during the talk I can see at least two members of the audience go very pale; and this is basic stuff, Cross Site Scripting, SQL Injection, Information Leakage, Cross Site Form Requests and so on. So, if you can think back to being one, as a beginning web developer (be it ASP.NET or not) what do you feel would be useful information about web security and how to develop securely? I will already be covering the OWASP Top Ten (And yes this means stackoverflow will be in the acknowledgements list if someone comes up with something I haven't thought of yet!)   Hello, I'm currently managing a site that I feel could be optimized and utilized to be much faster, however, I'm having difficulty finding reliable information to do it. I find the Apache documentation to be a hard read, and too technical about things I don't have a strong grasp on. I'm just looking for a good beginner/intermediate book about server administration to learn as much as possible about Apache, as well as how to create a nice secure, robust server that doesn't crash at the first hint of unusual traffic surges. • counting number of new entries in guest book

  I want to display the number of new(unseen) guest entries in the guest book of a user. I was thinking to count it so that, total number of entries in guestbook minus entries in guestbook at time of last login. However, I think that is not a good approach, because if the user logs in but does not go to his guestbook, in that case, the entries should be still "new", also if some new entry is posted in the user while he is online, it does not work in that case too. Any suggested please?

Does anyone have a code snippet or knows the code to get a persons name and number Eg 'Fred Smith - 027 292 2112". I haven't had much luck with the stuff I've tried.   I'm trying to learn Qt4. I have written code in C, C#, Python, PHP, Java and JavaScript before, but not in C++. Is there a book on Qt4 that you can recommend me? I've found some books I might like, but they're a little on the expensive side. I'm not ready to commit to Qt before I've played with it for a while, so I'd prefer to keep it under 30 bucks. • What's a good book for learning BCPL?

  A long time ago, I worked on some BCPL code (very similar to C although even more basic, difficult though that is to imagine). Now, as part of a compiler course, we're going to be setting assignments for building some of the parts of the compiler (lexical and semantic analysis) and I'd like to know what the community thinks is the best book for learning about the language (and concrete why you think it's the best). Not how to write compilers for it, just on how to program in it. It'll be up to the students themselves to figure out how best to develop a compiler. We're using BCPL since the chance of people being able to plagiarise code for a compiler is very slim. Any suggestions?

  Hi folks, I have a list of books titles: "The Hobbit: 70th Anniversary Edition" "The Hobbit" "The Hobbit (Illustrated/Collector Edition)[There and Back Again]" "The Hobbit: or, There and Back Again" "The Hobbit: Gift Pack" and so on... I thought that if I normalised the titles somehow, it would be easier to implement an automated way to know what book each edition is referring to. normalised = ''.join([char for char in title if char in (string.ascii_letters + string.digits)]) or normalised = '' for char in title: if char in ':/()|': break normalised += char return normalised But obviously they are not working as intended, as titles can contain special characters and editions can basically have very different title layouts. • Unable to import example projects from book (newbie question)

  I am trying to import projects from a book "Beginning Android 2" but when I choose the root directory the "Finish" button is still grayed out. I've tried importing the project from scratch with no success, and I've also tried to create a template project with the same name and everything and then importing into that (Import existing projects into workspace) but it always says "No projects are found to import". The contents of the folder are: Res folder, src folder with .java file, the manifest, build, and default.properties files. I am new to android dev (obviously) so I appreciate the help.
