  • Best jQuery/Prototype book for complex ajax?

    I've been working on a complex app with one main dashboard. I don't particularly like the design because it tries to do too much on one page. So the lead developer thought it would be a good idea to use ajax - because the page is so big. Refreshing part of it is far faster than loading it again. Problem is there's several ways data can be used. Adding items Editing rows Performing actions on selected rows (selected using a checkbox) Changing single items (like location, phone) My problem is making GENERALIZABLE ajax code that can operate on the data in a div, using class names to assemble the proper information for the ajax call. I did pretty well, but can't help but want to see if there's a better way to do it.

  • Good "Modelling & Simulation" book recommendations for programmers?

    I'm a programmer, and have completely forgotten all the advanced engineering Math I studied ~20 years ago at school. I now have an urgent need to learn about Modelling and Simulation. Though the present context is Disease Modelling, I'm not sure if there's such a thing as 'general' modelling and simulation... with concepts / techniques / algorithms that could be used in just about any domain (and not just limited to biology, finance, trade, economic, weather, etc.) Would you have any recommendations that are easy to read by a semi-Math-literate programmer? Basically, I cannot afford to drown myself in too much Math and theory behind M & S, hence this post. Tia...

    Guys in one of excersises (ch.5,e.8) from TC++PL Bjarne asks to do following: '"Run some tests to see if your compiler really generates equivalent code for iteration using pointers and iteration using indexing. If different degrees of optimization can be requested, see if and how that affects the quality of the generated code"' Any idea how to eat it and with what? Thanks in advice.

  • Can someone recommend a resource/site/book to improve problem solving skills

    I am a reasonably experienced developer (.NET, c#, asp.NET etc) but I'd like to hone my problem solving skills. I find that when I come up against a complex problem I sometimes implement a solution that I feel could have been better had I analyzed the problem in a different way. Ideally what I am looking for is a resource of some type that has 'practice problems and solutions' as I think my skills will only get better by practicing this more and adopting better practices. I hope my question is not to vague and I wont get upset with people answering with opinions etc.. thanks

    Hi, I am working through an example in Java Concurrency in Practice and am not understanding why a concurrent-safe container is necessary in the following code. I'm not seeing how the container "locations" 's state could be modified after construction; so since it is published through an 'unmodifiableMap' wrapper, it appears to me that an ordinary HashMap would suffice. EG, it is accessed concurrently, but the state of the map is only accessed by readers, no writers. The value fields in the map are syncronized via delegation to the 'SafePoint' class, so while the points are mutable, the keys for the hash, and their associated values (references to SafePoint instances) in the map never change. I think my confusion is based on what precisely the state of the collection is in the problem. In other words, how to emulate xml data storage with html as semantically as possible. Some various solutions that I've seen mentioned in passing are custom DTD, custom attributes with xhtml, early adoption of html5 and its data- attribute.     From Herb Sutter and Andrei Alexandrescu's 'C++ Coding Standards', Item 16: Avoid Macros under Exceptions for this guideline they wrote: For conditional compilation (e.g., system-dependent parts), avoid littering your code with #ifdefs. Instead, prefer to organize code such that the use of macros drives alternative implementations of one common interface, and then use the interface throughout. I'm having trouble understanding exactly what they mean by this. How can you drive alternate implementations without the use of #ifdef conditional compile macro directives? Can someone provide an example to help illustrate what's being proposed by the above paragraph? Thanks

    i've read about design patterns and it seems that there are a lot of different design patterns to use. i wonder if there are some books that acts like a reference. "you want to build a framework, then consider this, this and this pattern". also giving some examples. then jumps to another implementation eg. search engine and gives some patterns and concrete examples to use. in this way you learn about the weakness and strength about each pattern and where they will fit, instead of just reading about every design pattern decoupled from each other. are there good "reference sheets" or other tutorials good for a beginner at this? thanks

    This summer I'm getting into UNIX (mostly *BSD) development. I've graduate level knowledge about operating systems. I can also understand the code & read from here and there but the thing is I want to make most of my time. Reading books are best for this. From my search I found that these two books The Design and Implementation of the 4.4 BSD Operating System (1996) "Unix Internals: The New Frontiers" by Uresh Vahalia (1996) (See here for 2nd edition) are like established books on UNIX OS internals. But the thing is these books are pretty much outdated. So, Is there any recent books that covers internals of recent Unix OS? How about books on other Unix operating systems? They seem to be recent than above books but how close are they to OpenBSD/FreeBSD? Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris Kernel Architecture, 2 edition (July 20, 2006) HP-UX 11i Internals (February 1, 2004) I really don't prefer HP-UX as its not open source.

    I have made application in which I have kept calendar,now I need that if admin changes his calendar and if it is affected to user and if that user is currently looking that calendar then whatever changes Admin has done that should reflect to user without refreshing the page, just like when email comes to Gmail then without refreshing we can see the inbox marked as unread... I am looking to try to get a social network site up and running on Ruby on Rails and was looking at RailsSpace: Building a Social Networking Website with Ruby on Rails (Addison-Wesley Professional Ruby Series) - Paperback (July 30, 2007) by Michael Hartl. This was published in 2007, however, and the newer reviews say it is not very helpful. Does anyone know if there are any new publications out there that walk you through building a social network site while teaching you the code(rather than just using a out of the box program)? Thanks
