• Freeze when installing 13.10

  guys! I encountered an installation problem when I try to make a dual boot computer of win8 and ubuntu 13.10. I follow this guide:http://overtond.blogspot.tw/2013/10/ubuntu-on-gigabyte-p34g-ultrablade.html because the same of the laptop GIGABYTE p34g. I disabled the secure boot(as well as 3D graphic acceleration and Intel rapid start as the above script advised) and start installing. However, installation got stuck like this(http://ppt.cc/iMYQ). I have been bothered by this for a week. Any advice would help, thanks!

• Pendrive USB Ubuntu installation - black screen on boot

  I see many posts on this, but no solution. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my 16GB USB flash drive using this official link using their tool Universal USB Installer. Installation to USB went fine so I set my laptop to boot from USB and the Ubuntu was recognized. I saw the usual boot screen and I chose option "Run Ubuntu from this USB". The boot process started and after 5-6 seconds the screen goes black and non-responsive. I thought that it hang on X loading so I tried switching to console via Ctrl+Alt+F1-6 but the system did not respond. Why is this happening? Am I doing something wrong? PS. My laptop is HP Pavillion G6

  Hi there, Im trying to install ubuntu v10.10 64bit on my pc. Unfortunately when I try to boot the installation from my usb-drive the installation begins with asking for a username and password.. I didn't set up a user or a password for that matter, so what username/pass should I fill in. I already tried to submit the form blank and with root / root but without success.. Somebody knows what the right combination is or explain if I'm a complete idiot for not understanding what to do.. Thank you alL!

• Data recovery from corrupt Ubuntu partition/directory (question about a previous answer)

  I have an Ubuntu installation that won't boot anymore. I asked my previous question about it here: http://superuser.com/questions/15916/ubuntu-chkdsk-equivalent Bolotov replied: As I see from your previous question you can boot Windows so you could use dskprobe from Windows XP Service Pack 2 Support Tools to make sure that fs type is correct ... but it's already correct fs type 7 is NTFS. Message "The type of the filesystem is RAW. CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives." means that windows can't determine fs type for some reason. As we see fs type is correct. To run Chkdsk on your Windows partition you can install Windows Recovery Console, boot in recovery console and check your disk. After checking the disk you will gain access to you c:\ubuntu\disks. I think you can mount your linux partition (which is in file) as usual loop-back device: mount -o loop [path to your linux-loopback-partition] But you should mount windows patrition first. So now I'd like to know: Within the recovery console I will be issuing the commands "chkdsk -r" and then "mount -o loop [path to windows partition]" and then "mount -o loop c:\ubuntu\disks", correct? I do have a ("corrupt and unreadable") c:\ubuntu\disks directory so that appears to be the correct path to the linux partition; do you know the path to the windows partition? would that be just "c:\"?

• assistance recovering/reinstalling/installing ubuntu and win7

  New computer with Windows 7 installed, I defrag, shrink, re-boot from Ubuntu LiveUSB, go to gparted and look at partitions before installing Ubuntu....for some reason Win7 is still taking up 400G of my HD! I resized partition down with gparted, exit and yes of course I can't boot into Windows. When I go to install Ubuntu in new large unallocated space I get a blank screen at the point you are asked what kind of installation you want. I have Ubuntu 12.04 LiveUSB, Windows 7 re-installation disk and driver disks also. The HDD currently has 3 allocated partitions: 'diag' fat16, 'recovery' ntfs and 'OS' ntfs which has a red '!' next to it.

• Migrating to Natty (or any other future versions of ubuntu)

  I am hoping that this question would help other ubuntu users when migrating to a newer version of ubuntu. This should have all the info that they need. So please when you answer try to phrase them into points for easy understanding. I understand that some questions that I ask might have been asked before by other users. In that case just provide the links to those questions. I am running ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat in case that is important. I can say for sure that a clean install is definitely better than an upgrade since it gives you an opportunity to clean your system and get a fresh start. However some of us like to retain certain software configuration or files etc. The questions are as follows, How do you save the configuration files of certain application like for instance Thunderbird, firefox, etc...so that you can basically paste in the new version of ubuntu? (Thunderbird for instance has all my mail, so I definitely would like to backup its configuration and then use it the new installation that I do) I have some applications like MATLAB and Maple (Based on JAVA) installed. When I migrate, can I just copy the entire installation folder to the new version of ubuntu? Would it still work as now if I do that? When doing a backup which folders should be backed up? Obviously your personal files would be backup. But other than that, is it necessary to back up stuff in the home folder, /usr/bin etc? I have BURG installed. I am guessing that would be erased when I do a clean install along with the program's configuration and everything. How can I do a backup of it? I am dual booting my ubuntu alongside with Windows 7. When I perform the clean install of ubuntu, would GRUB (bootloader) be removed and in anyway jeopardize my windows installation? Over time I have added a lot of PPA which are of course compatible with my current ubuntu version. How do I make a backup of all my PPA and would they be compatible to the newer version of ubuntu when I restore them? I hope this covers all the questions or doubts that a user might face when thinking about performing a clean install of his system. If I missed anything please mention it as a comment and I will add it to my answer.

  I had a dual-boot arrangement on my desktop with 12.04 and 12.10 (testing). Last week, I managed to trash both and ended up re-installing both. After doing all the updates, I activated Ubuntu-one which worked just fine on the previous installations. On both 12.04 and 12.10, the Ubuntu-One window fails to show the folders for syncing and only syncs the Ubuntu-One folder. Adding a folder on my net book on which sync is working properly brings up a pop up on my desktop that tells me a new folder is available for syncing - but the Ubuntu window fails to show it. I have put a screenshot from my net book (working OK) and one from my desktop which shows the problem. Any suggestions please?

  I am installing Ubuntu 12.04 onto my system, which I am dual booting an already installed version of Windows 7 with. The installation goes fine until what I suppose is near the end of the entire thing, where it is at the page where it scrolls through the features of Ubuntu. At this point, it is saying: Detecting file systems... It will not go past this point, and it has been at this part for an hour and a half. What should I do to fix this? I am new to working with Linux operating systems, so please help!

  I've had Kubuntu installed for several years, updating from one major release to another, and now I think I'd like to try to switch to Lubuntu. But since my distribution is already tuned and shaped to satisfy my needs, I'd like not to get a fresh installation, but just purge kubuntu-desktop and install lubuntu-desktop. • Only sdb shows up when installing 12.04 on new Dell inspiron 14z

  I got my brand new Dell Inspiron 14z yesterday, but failed to install Ubuntu. I can boot from a USB stick, and it works well. When trying to install, I confirm that the laptop is connected to the internet etc (as in the 2nd picture in the installation guide: How do I install Ubuntu?). When pressing "Continue" I do not get the question on installation type (alongside/replace/something else). Instead I get a window where I can select partitions: // Picture removed due to low reputation... The problem is that I can only select sdb in the drop drop down box, and I can do do nothing with sdb (like adding partitions etc). The main disk (sda) is partitioned using Gparted the following way: // Picture removed due to low reputation As far as I understand from other threads on askubuntu, this should work... What can I do to install Ubuntu alongside with Windows 7?

  Please go easy on me. I'm a clutzy dinosaur. I currently have a large, unwieldy website hand-coded in html/css with php includes. It currently has a single WP installation in a subdirectory. The plan is to reorganize, and I want to use WP as the CMS and incorporate 3 WP blogs for 3 subdomains. Ideally, would like to create a WP multisite network to allow for further expansion and to save admin trouble. I just want to confirm that if I install WP in the root directory and create 3 blogs (in subdomains), does this mean my website's home page is the mother blog's index.php? Essentially, I will have created 4 blogs - mother at root and 3 children in subdomains? How to set this up on my Mac (OSX 10.5.8) running MAMP for development? And then how to migrate to server without breaking?

• Ubuntu dual-boot errors in 13.10

  Specs: Lenovo U530, 500 GB HDD, 8 GB RAM, 64-bit, i7 Intel Processor with integrated graphics I'm trying to dual-boot Ubuntu but I have the following problems: After booting from live DVD, the GRUB loads but with the following errors: "Could not open '\EFI\BOOT\fallback.efi': 14" and "error: variable 'root' isn't set. I have disabled Fast Startup and SecureBoot before booting the disc. Also, after trying to "Try Ubuntu without installing" my screen, and DVD Drive shutoff momentarily but then my drive boots up but my screen remains black and sometimes flashes but doesn't display anything. I will greatly appreciate any help. P.S. I don't have any previous version of Ubuntu installed so this is NOT an upgrade from a previous version.

  I have one machine in which Windows8 is already installed and having 3 partitions(one for windows OS). Now i wanted to install Ubuntu12.04, i have tried many times but ubuntu 12.04 installer not able to fine those partitions, even it is not recognise windows partition. please refer the images and please help me to solve this issue.   I cannot install Ubuntu 11.10 from a USB stick. It doesn't boot to Ubuntu page for installation but remains on Windows 7. I've downloaded the 11.10 version iso file and burnt it to a USB stick. After I inserted it, the USB stick is a symbol of Ubuntu installation and I clicked wubi to try to install it. But it didn't boot to Ubuntu but stayed on Win 7 after restart. It occurred error and said "windowsBackend" object has no attribut "cd_path" when I chose "Help me to boot from CD". I thought it's the problem of my computer model (acer travelmate 8481), but it can't boot on an old computer using XP as well. How can I solve this problem and install Ubuntu to replace Windows?

  I have Solaris Studio almost working. My only issue seems to be Java. Solaris Studio supports Java version 1.6.0_13 and newer and looks for a valid Java installation in the following order: 1) Location specified with --jdkhome command line option 2) In PATH environment variable 3) At /usr/jdk/latest location, if exists 4) At /usr/java location, if exists 5) At /usr location, if exists ============================ I try typing --jdkhome in the console but I get an command not found error. I have added the following to my /home/aflory/.bashrc file: PATH=$PATH:/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_24/bin:/home/aflory/solstudio12.2/bin export PATH I am running Ubuntu 10.04 64bit. I tried installing the 64 bit version of Java JDK, then I tried installing the 32bit version of Java JDK. I don't believe there is a 64bit version of Solaris Studio.

• Ubuntu won't stay installed

  I recently experienced OS problems with Windows 8 so I decided to wipe my hard drive and install Ubuntu using a usb boot. I am able to "Try Ubuntu" or choose to install instantly, however, after installation it asks me to restart my computer but when I do this I receive the same installation options I originally had, "Try Ubuntu", "Install", "OEM Install", "Repair Disk". I initially thought this was the result of leaving the boot usb in, so I tried reinstalling, but now I just receive a message saying "No boot disc or boot disc failed". This happens with any type of install I do, I've tried clearing the hard drive multiple times, making a new boot usb, but nothing seems to help. I've tried reinstalling windows, but I encounter the same problem, without the usb I get an error. I have an Acer Aspire M3470, I cleared my hard drive and attempting to install via usb boot. I have a weird BIOS menu probably because of AMD but it's been hard to find information regarding my particular BIOS menu. HERE is an image of my BIOS menu

But its too complicated and also I do not want to create symlinks and mount and all the stuff mentioned there. • Problem with DualBooting Ubuntu 13.10 and Win7

  this is my first post here on AskUbuntu, not first time using it though. I wanted to install Ubuntu 13.10 on my PC to have all my work stuff there and leave Win7 for gaming. So i did my research on how to Dual Boot when you already have Win7 installed, here are the steps i took Used Disk Management on Win7 and shrunk that partition, leaving 80GB free for Ubuntu. Made a Bootable pendrive following the instructions on Ubuntu`s website. During the installation steps there was supposed to be a Install alongside Win7, but there wasnt, so i chose Something else. Everything was fine and i was able to install Ubuntu no problem on my unallocated 80GB partition (76GB Ubuntu + 4GB swap) There was a prompt for me to restart my PC and so I did expecting to see the dual boot screen (grub right?) Now, when i restarted my PC, Grub never showed up and it booted straight to Windows. Then I did some more research and found out that that could happen. Tried three things then Plugging in bootable pendrive again and selected Try Ubuntu without installing. Then i followed some instructions found here (How can I repair grub? (How to get Ubuntu back after installing Windows?)) and i could chroot into my Ubuntu install just fine. Repaired grub as instructed on that link, restarted the PC and booted straight into Win7 again. Again, used the bootable pen drive to Try Ubuntu... and used the Boot-repair tool (recommended repair). Again, booted straight into Win7. Lastly, i installed easyBCD on my Win7 and made a new entry for Ubuntu (Linux/BSD). When i rebooted the PC, there was the option to choose between Win7 and Linux, chose linux and it didnt work, taking me straight to a command line-like enviroment that read Minimum bash like scripting or something, as if I didn`t have a Linux OS installed. So, I thought I`d try and repair my Ubuntu install. And during the Installation method step there was the choice to install alongside Ubuntu 13.10! and that right there drove me crazy. Here is a screenshot of gparted showing how things are set up now http://imageshack.us/f/801/77u3.png/ Notice on the left-hand side how i can access my installation files just fine. sdb1- win7 reserved space, sdb2- win7 OS, sdb3- 76GB ubuntu install, sdb5- 4GB swap area. • 12.04 freezes on install

  I'm new to ubuntu and can't for the life of me understand how to get around this issue. I'm having a problem where when I insert the boot disk that i burned for 12.04, it loads and gives me the language option and select an installation type, i select either try ubuntu / install ubuntu and it begins to load. Then after about 5 mintues of the purple screen with the dots under the UBUNTU it freezes the whole computer, and the only way to get out is to turn off the laptop with the power button. I have read previous threads saying people had similar "freezing" issues including ones that mention my model of laptop, HP Pavillion DV1000. But it appears their problems are post installation and relate to their wireless cards. I have tried changing the boot options (F6) and I am totally stuck. Can anyone shed any light on to this issue?   I am trying to install Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 on my laptop. It just failed on the entry selection step(to select installation or try it first). However, when I tried it on my desktop computer, the installation went smoothly . I've thought of that and got a few clues. My Desktop computer had Window XP installed already, while my laptop has only got Linux(Fedora 14) Is there a laptop version of Ubuntu? And I just downloaded the wrong one? Thanks for any suggestion! PS: My laptop is ASUS K42J, RAM size is 2G. I am using liveusb to create the usb stick.

• Upgrade to 13.04 was not successful. Gstreamer not working. What do?

  I finally decided to upgrade to 13.04. In the middle of the installation my computer froze completely, and so I decided to force quit. I log back on, and notice that the login says 13.04, but not everything was updated. So I run the software updater. Some of the stuff gets updated, but not everything, I suppose. I try to run Rhythmbox, but it says that it's not able to form playback, and that the Gstreamer was messed up, and to please check installation. I don't know what other bugs maybe running. That's just the first I've encountered. The software updater won't let me update anymore because it says the updates need authentication.

• New laptop, Windows 8.1, attempting dual install. Ubuntu installer doesn't 'see' existing OS

  Though I've used Ubuntu for a few years, I'm new to installation. Previously I had help and now I'm doing it alone (moved across the world). Windows 8.1 came preinstalled on my new laptop (Toshiba Satellite C70-A-17C - Core i5, 8 GB RAM, 750 GB HDD). I have already followed a few steps I found online to prepare for a dual install (with Ubuntu 14.04). I backed up Windows, created a bootable Ubuntu USB and DVD (just in case one didn't work), turned off fast boot and secure boot, and shrunk C:/. The new unallocated drive portion is 292.97 GB. After shrinking C:/, I restarted Windows a couple of times to make sure everything was working fine (it is). I then attempted to install with the Ubuntu live USB. However, the Ubuntu installer doesn't see that Windows 8.1 is already installed. I don't understand, and don't want to mess with Ubuntu partitioning when I don't know where the partitions will be created. My concern is that, if I go further with the installation process, Windows might be overwritten or compromised in some way. I then tried to reboot using the Ubuntu live DVD, thinking I might get a different result. However, I can't figure out how to make the laptop boot from the CD drive. I went into the BIOS and found no option there, either. Any help is very appreciated! EDIT: Looks like I can't link directly to each photo. Here is my album of screenshots: http://imgur.com/a/zChCo Here you can see that there's no option to boot from CD drive, only USB. Everything looks okay so far. I don't understand this. Ubuntu has not yet been installed. Unmounting partitions? (I chose 'no'.) Even though the laptop came pre-installed with Windows 8.1, the Ubuntu USB installer can't see it. I chose 'something else'. I need to pick and format partitions. I scrolled down and took a second shot to include all information. Completely lost and cancelled installation.
