  • Audio Problems with my Mac running Ubuntu 12.04

    - by Tomtom
I've got a mac (desktop around 2008). I installed Ubuntu 11.10, then remembered I had 12.04 on a disc. I installed 12.04 and now the audio will not work. I've tried all the killallpulse and looked briefly at the Alsa thing. I put in speakers and they only work with the headphone setting. When i put in cat /proc/asound/cards I get: 0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel HDA Intel at 0x50600000 irq 47 I do have the Mac startup noise but no sound in Ubuntu

  • How does the fstab 'defaults' option work? Is relatime recommended?

    - by hushs
I know the fstab defaults option means this: rw,suid, dev, exec, auto, nouser, async. But what if I want to add one more option, for example relatime, should I still add defaults too or they are applied anyway? Is it needed to add at least one option? Some examples: 1. UUID=bfb42838-d866-4233-9679-96e7536356df /media/data ext3 defaults 0 2 2. UUID=bfb42838-d866-4233-9679-96e7536356df /media/data ext3 0 2 3. UUID=bfb42838-d866-4233-9679-96e7536356df /media/data ext3 defaults, relatime 0 2 4. UUID=bfb42838-d866-4233-9679-96e7536356df /media/data ext3 relatime 0 2 Is the (2) correct(no option at all)? Are the (1) and (2) the same? Are the (3) and (4) the same? Furthermore, I read in the Ubuntu Community Documentation that in Ubuntu 8.04 relatime was used as default for linux native file systems. Is it still true for 12.04? If yes, then why do I see this if I use the mount command: /dev/sda2 on / type ext4 (rw,errors=remount-ro) If no, why not? It isn't recommended to use relatime now? I just wanted to apply it to my non system partitions, it is a good idea? EDIT: I found an other command to list the mounted partitions and their options: cat /proc/mounts This is the result of a partition mounted with the defaults option in fstab: /dev/sdb2 /media/adat ext3 rw,relatime,errors=continue,barrier=1,data=ordered 0 0 This is the output of mount for the same partition: /dev/sdb2 on /media/adat type ext3 (rw) And here is both result if the same partition mounted from Nautilus as a non-root user: /dev/sdb2 /media/adat ext3 rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,errors=continue,barrier=1,data=ordered 0 0 /dev/sdb2 on /media/adat type ext3 (rw,nosuid, nodev, uhelper=udisks) So it looks like relatime is used if we mount an ext partition in 12.04. So it is unneeded to add it manually. So my problem is broadly solved. But I still can't see why the options that should be in the defaults are not listed even with the cat /proc/mounts. Maybe there is a third and even better method to list the partition mount options :)

  • Nvidia R310 Drivers break Starcraft

    - by user19192
I was originally using the latest proprietary Nvidia drivers from nvidia-current, after upgrading the new R310 drivers my system works fine, but Starcraft 2 won't run anymore. (I'm running it through play-on-linux) I get that the application has attempted to load the C runtime library incorrectly and that DirectX failed to initialize. Previously, executing echo 0|sudo tee /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope would fix the problem, but does no longer work. Any ideas? Or do I have to downgrade back to nvidia-current drivers.

  • Where I can find /sbin/hotplug in my kernel source

    - by Rahul
I am reading hotplug events. And I want to enable automatic loading unloading module, when a new device is added. For that I read that kernel does it using /sbin/hotplug script, but I am not able to find it in my source code, can someone help me out where can I find it? Also when I tried to do cat /proc/sys/kernel/hotplug there is nothing coming in output, I am running the same kernel which I downloaded and built.

  • swapping or trashing with vast amounts of unmapped pagecache

    - by Marco
I'm using kubuntu jaunty (i386 32bit), kernel 2.6.28-13-generic. I've 4Gb of RAM, of which only 3317Mb are seen by the system (I guess because of the 32bit system). I'm seeing that the pagecache utilization is continually growing, up to the point that the system is unusable (after a few days). This happens also when I don't do anything (all user applications closed and the bare minimum of services enabled). If enabled, the system starts to use swap space (using it all in the end). Even if swap is disabled, disk activity becomes continuous, with the system unresponsive. For example, right now the system is working (albeit a tad slow), with only firefox and wing ide running, and I have 2Gb cached with only 45Mb mapped: $ free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 3346388 3247328 99060 0 8416 2117980 -/+ buffers/cache: 1120932 2225456 Swap: 2144668 519448 1625220 $ cat /proc/meminfo MemTotal: 3346388 kB MemFree: 97128 kB Buffers: 7872 kB Cached: 2120224 kB SwapCached: 413860 kB Active: 2304596 kB Inactive: 865984 kB Active(anon): 2279168 kB Inactive(anon): 830236 kB Active(file): 25428 kB Inactive(file): 35748 kB Unevictable: 32 kB Mlocked: 32 kB HighTotal: 2492940 kB HighFree: 5456 kB LowTotal: 853448 kB LowFree: 91672 kB SwapTotal: 2144668 kB SwapFree: 1625244 kB Dirty: 84 kB Writeback: 0 kB AnonPages: 629304 kB Mapped: 45768 kB Slab: 45600 kB SReclaimable: 21756 kB SUnreclaim: 23844 kB PageTables: 4468 kB NFS_Unstable: 0 kB Bounce: 0 kB WritebackTmp: 0 kB CommitLimit: 3817860 kB Committed_AS: 3735020 kB VmallocTotal: 122880 kB VmallocUsed: 9352 kB VmallocChunk: 66600 kB HugePages_Total: 0 HugePages_Free: 0 HugePages_Rsvd: 0 HugePages_Surp: 0 Hugepagesize: 4096 kB DirectMap4k: 16376 kB DirectMap4M: 888832 kB If I try to drop the caches, little happes: # sync ; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches ; free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 3346388 3220580 125808 0 3020 2100600 -/+ buffers/cache: 1116960 2229428 Swap: 2144668 519356 1625312 Right now I've vm.swappiness = 5, but I've tried also with 0 and 1 (without noticeable differences). • Understanding Linux SCSI queue depths

    - by Troels Arvin
I'm experimenting with the effects of different SCSI queue depth values on a Dell server running CentOS Linux 5.4 (x86_64). The server has two QLogic QLE2560 FC HBAs connected via multipathing to a storage system. The storage system has allocated two LUNs to the server, each connected through four paths in an active-active-active-active round-robin configuration. All in all, the two LUNs exist as eight /dev/sdX devices, represented by two devices in /dev/mpath. I currently adjust the queue depth values in /etc/modprobe.conf and check the result (after rebooting) by looking in the seventh column of /proc/scsi/sg/devices. Two questions related to that: Is there a way to adjust queue depths without rebooting or unloading the qla2xxx kernel module? E.g., can I echo a new queue depth value into some /proc or /sys-like file to update the queue depth? If I set the queue depth to 128, is that 128 in total for all devices handled by the qla2xxx module?, or 128 for each HBA? (256 in total), or 128 for each of the eight /dev/sdX devices (1024 in toal)?, or 128 for each of the two /dev/mpath/... devices (256 in total)? This is important for me to know so that my server doesn't flood the storage system, affecting other servers connected to it.

  • Xen dom0 reports incorrect amount of RAM with dom0_mem set

    - by xen_amnesiac
I've done a fair bit of searching about this, but have found nothing that answers my question. I have a system with 6GB of RAM which acts as a Xen server. For reference, it runs Ubuntu 12.04. I've set the kernel parameter dom0_mem:512M,max:512M in /etc/default/grub as follows: GRUB_CMDLINE_XEN_DEFAULT="dom0_mem=min:512M,max:512M" I've tried variations of that, with the same result. My question is this: With the above set, the dom0 reports in all applications a RAM amount of 422M. cat /proc/meminfo gives the following: $ cat /proc/meminfo MemTotal: 432472 kB MemFree: 54144 kB Buffers: 17640 kB Cached: 220104 kB SwapCached: 30172 kB Active: 136500 kB Inactive: 167780 kB Active(anon): 6156 kB Inactive(anon): 60516 kB Active(file): 130344 kB Inactive(file): 107264 kB Unevictable: 52 kB Mlocked: 52 kB SwapTotal: 1794044 kB SwapFree: 1682012 kB Dirty: 0 kB Writeback: 0 kB AnonPages: 39572 kB Mapped: 8048 kB Shmem: 136 kB Slab: 44324 kB SReclaimable: 22012 kB SUnreclaim: 22312 kB KernelStack: 1280 kB PageTables: 3840 kB NFS_Unstable: 0 kB Bounce: 0 kB WritebackTmp: 0 kB CommitLimit: 2010280 kB Committed_AS: 329192 kB VmallocTotal: 34359738367 kB VmallocUsed: 313988 kB VmallocChunk: 34359417340 kB HardwareCorrupted: 0 kB AnonHugePages: 0 kB HugePages_Total: 0 HugePages_Free: 0 HugePages_Rsvd: 0 HugePages_Surp: 0 Hugepagesize: 2048 kB DirectMap4k: 524696 kB DirectMap2M: 0 kB top, htop, free -m, and byobu's RAM monitor all report the same amount. At first I thought this was because of the onboard graphics borrowing some memory, but have now switched to a dedicated GPU and it persists. Is this normal behavior, or has something gone amiss? It's just about 100MB of RAM that's "gone", and I have no idea where it went. I understand that it's normal that not all RAM is available for allocation, but does the system really take an amount relatively high to the amount of RAM available?

  • NFS4 permission denied when userid does not match (even though idmap is working)

    - by SystemParadox
    I have NFS4 setup with idmapd working correctly. ls -l from the client shows the correct user names, even though the user ids differ between the machines. However, when the user ids do not match, I get 'permission denied' errors trying access files, even though ls -l shows the correct username. When the user ids do happen to match by coincidence, everything works fine. sudo sysctl -w sunrpc.nfsd_debug=1023 gives the following output in the server syslog for the failed file access: nfsd_dispatch: vers 4 proc 1 nfsv4 compound op #1/3: 22 (OP_PUTFH) nfsd: fh_verify(28: 00070001 015c0001 00000000 9853d400 2a4892a5 4918a0ba) nfsv4 compound op ffff88003d0f5078 opcnt 3 #1: 22: status 0 nfsv4 compound op #2/3: 3 (OP_ACCESS) nfsd: fh_verify(28: 00070001 015c0001 00000000 9853d400 2a4892a5 4918a0ba) nfsd: fh_verify - just checking nfsv4 compound op ffff88003d0f5078 opcnt 3 #2: 3: status 0 nfsv4 compound op #3/3: 9 (OP_GETATTR) nfsd: fh_verify(28: 00070001 015c0001 00000000 9853d400 2a4892a5 4918a0ba) nfsd: fh_verify - just checking nfsv4 compound op ffff88003d0f5078 opcnt 3 #3: 9: status 0 nfsv4 compound returned 0 nfsd_dispatch: vers 4 proc 1 nfsv4 compound op #1/7: 22 (OP_PUTFH) nfsd: fh_verify(28: 00070001 015c0001 00000000 9853d400 2a4892a5 4918a0ba) nfsv4 compound op ffff88003d0f5078 opcnt 7 #1: 22: status 0 nfsv4 compound op #2/7: 32 (OP_SAVEFH) nfsv4 compound op ffff88003d0f5078 opcnt 7 #2: 32: status 0 nfsv4 compound op #3/7: 18 (OP_OPEN) NFSD: nfsd4_open filename dom_file op_stateowner (null) renewing client (clientid 4f96587d/0000000e) nfsd: nfsd_lookup(fh 28: 00070001 015c0001 00000000 9853d400 2a4892a5 4918a0ba, dom_file) nfsd: fh_verify(28: 00070001 015c0001 00000000 9853d400 2a4892a5 4918a0ba) nfsd: fh_verify - just checking nfsd: fh_lock(28: 00070001 015c0001 00000000 9853d400 2a4892a5 4918a0ba) locked = 0 nfsd: fh_compose(exp 08:01/22806529 srv/dom_file, ino=22809724) nfsd: fh_verify(36: 01070001 015c0001 00000000 9853d400 2a4892a5 4918a0ba) nfsd: fh_verify - just checking fh_verify: srv/dom_file permission failure, acc=804, error=13 nfsv4 compound op ffff88003d0f5078 opcnt 7 #3: 18: status 13 nfsv4 compound returned 13 Is that useful to anyone? • Usage of putty in command line from Hudson

    - by kij
Hi, I'm trying to use putty in command line from an hudson job. The command is the following one: putty -ssh -2 -P 22 USERNAME@SERVER_ADDR -pw PASS -m command.txt Where 'command.txt' is a shell script to execute in the server through SSH. If i launch this command from the Window command prompt, it works, the shell script is executed on the server machine. If i launch a build of the hudson job configured with this batch command, it doesn't work. The build is running... and running... and running.. without doing anything, and i have to stop it manually. So my question is: Is it possible to launch an external programm (i.e. putty) from an hudson job ? ps: i tried SSH plugin but... not a really good plugin (pre/post build, fail status of the commands launched not caught by hudson, etc.) Thanks in advance for your help. Best regards. kij EDIT: These are the build logs: [workspace] $ cmd /c call C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\hudson7429256014041663539.bat C:\Hudson\jobs\Artifact deployer\workspace>putty -ssh -2 -P 22 USER@SERV_ADD -pw PASS -m com.txt Le build a été annulé Finished: ABORTED And the Hudson.err.log file at the same time (after a stop): 3 juin 2010 18:27:28 hudson.model.Run run INFO: Artifact deployer #6 aborted java.lang.InterruptedException at java.lang.ProcessImpl.waitFor(Native Method) at hudson.Proc$LocalProc.join(Proc.java:179) at hudson.Launcher$ProcStarter.join(Launcher.java:278) at hudson.tasks.CommandInterpreter.perform(CommandInterpreter.java:83) at hudson.tasks.CommandInterpreter.perform(CommandInterpreter.java:58) at hudson.tasks.BuildStepMonitor$1.perform(BuildStepMonitor.java:19) at hudson.model.AbstractBuild$AbstractRunner.perform(AbstractBuild.java:601) at hudson.model.Build$RunnerImpl.build(Build.java:174) at hudson.model.Build$RunnerImpl.doRun(Build.java:138) at hudson.model.AbstractBuild$AbstractRunner.run(AbstractBuild.java:416) at hudson.model.Run.run(Run.java:1241) at hudson.model.FreeStyleBuild.run(FreeStyleBuild.java:46) at hudson.model.ResourceController.execute(ResourceController.java:88) at hudson.model.Executor.run(Executor.java:124) My shell script only write "hello" in a "hello.txt" file on the server, and nothing is done.

  • limits.conf to set memory limits

    - by Rupert Jipe

  • Zero downtime uploads / Rollback in IIS

    - by NickatUship
I'm not sure if this is the right way to ask this question, but here's basically what i'd like to do: 1.) Push a changeset to a site in IIS. 2.) Don't interrupt the users. 3.) Be able to roll back effortlessly. So, there are a few things that I know have to happen: 1.) Out of Proc session - handled 2.) Out of Proc cache - handled So the questions that remain: 1.) How do i keep from interrupting the users? If i just upload the files to bin, the app recycles and takes 10+ seconds to come back online 2.) How do i roll back effortlessly? I was thinking a possible solution would be to have two sites set up in IIS, one public and one private. Uploads go to private and get warmed up. After warmup, the sites are swapped. A rollback only entails swapping to private without an upload. This seems sound in theory, but Im not sure of the mechanics. Any ideas?

  • How to configure a shortcut for an SSH connection through a SSH tunnel

    - by Simone Carletti
My company production servers (FOO, BAR...) are located behind two gateway servers (A, B). In order to connect to server FOO, I have to open a ssh connection with server A or B with my username JOHNDOE, then from A (or B) I can access any production server opening a SSH connection with a standard username (let's call it WEBBY). So, each time I have to do something like: ssh johndoe@a ... ssh webby@foo ... # now I can work on the server As you can imagine, this is a hassle when I need to use scp or if I need to quickly open multiple connections. I have configured a ssh key and also I'm using .ssh/config for some shortcuts. I was wondering if I can create some kind of ssh configuration in order to type ssh foo and let SSH open/forward all the connections for me. Is it possible? Edit womble's answer is exactly what I was looking for but it seems right now I can't use netcat because it's not installed on the gateway server. weppos:~ weppos$ ssh foo -vv OpenSSH_5.1p1, OpenSSL 0.9.7l 28 Sep 2006 debug1: Reading configuration data /Users/xyz/.ssh/config debug1: Applying options for foo debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh_config debug2: ssh_connect: needpriv 0 debug1: Executing proxy command: exec ssh a nc -w 3 foo 22 debug1: permanently_drop_suid: 501 debug1: identity file /Users/xyz/.ssh/identity type -1 debug2: key_type_from_name: unknown key type '-----BEGIN' debug2: key_type_from_name: unknown key type 'Proc-Type:' debug2: key_type_from_name: unknown key type 'DEK-Info:' debug2: key_type_from_name: unknown key type '-----END' debug1: identity file /Users/xyz/.ssh/id_rsa type 1 debug2: key_type_from_name: unknown key type '-----BEGIN' debug2: key_type_from_name: unknown key type 'Proc-Type:' debug2: key_type_from_name: unknown key type 'DEK-Info:' debug2: key_type_from_name: unknown key type '-----END' debug1: identity file /Users/xyz/.ssh/id_dsa type 2 bash: nc: command not found ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host

  • High load average due to high system cpu load (%sys)

    - by Nick
We have server with high traffic website. Recently we moved from 2 x 4 core server (8 cores in /proc/cpuinfo), 32 GB RAM, running CentOS 5.x, to 2 x 4 core server (16 cores in /proc/cpuinfo), 32 GB RAM, running CentOS 6.3 Server running nginx as a proxy, mysql server and sphinx-search. Traffic is high, but mysql and sphinx-search databases are relatively small, and usually everything works blazing fast. Today server experienced load average of 100++. Looking at top and sar, we noticed that (%sys) is very high - 50 to 70%. Disk utilization was less 1%. We tried to reboot, but problem existed after the reboot. At any moment server had at least 3-4 GB free RAM. Only message shown by dmesg was "possible SYN flooding on port 80. Sending cookies.". Here is snippet of sar 11:00:01 CPU %user %nice %system %iowait %steal %idle 11:10:01 all 21.60 0.00 66.38 0.03 0.00 11.99 We know that this is traffic issue, but we do not know how to proceed future and where to check for solution. Is there a way we can find where exactly those "66.38%" are used. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Creating an ec2 image on amazon fails at mkfs.ext3

    - by Dave Orr
    I'm trying to create an image of my ec2 instance in Amazon's cloud. It's been a bit of an adventure so far. I did manage to install Amazon's ec2-api-tools, which was harder than it seemed like it should have been. Then I ran: ec2-bundle-vol -d /mnt -k pk-{key}.pem -c cert-{cert}.pem -u {uid} -s 1536 Which returned: Copying / into the image file /mnt/image... Excluding: /sys/kernel/debug /sys/kernel/security /sys /proc /dev/pts /dev /dev /media /mnt /proc /sys /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules /mnt/image /mnt/img-mnt 1+0 records in 1+0 records out 1048576 bytes (1.0 MB) copied, 0.00677357 s, 155 MB/s mkfs.ext3: option requires an argument -- 'L' Usage: mkfs.ext3 [-c|-l filename] [-b block-size] [-f fragment-size] [-i bytes-per-inode] [-I inode-size] [-J journal-options] [-G meta group size] [-N number-of-inodes] [-m reserved-blocks-percentage] [-o creator-os] [-g blocks-per-group] [-L volume-label] [-M last-mounted-directory] [-O feature[,...]] [-r fs-revision] [-E extended-option[,...]] [-T fs-type] [-U UUID] [-jnqvFKSV] device [blocks-count] ERROR: execution failed: "mkfs.ext3 -F /mnt/image -U 1c001580-9118-4a50-9a25-dcf02be6d25f -L " So mkfs.ext3 wants -L, which is a volume name. But ec2-bundle-vol doesn't seem to take in a volume name as an argument, and the docs (http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AmazonEC2/gsg/2006-06-26/creating-an-image.html) don't seem to think one should be needed. Certainly their sample command: # ec2-bundle-vol -d /mnt -k ~root/pk-HKZYKTAIG2ECMXYIBH3HXV4ZBZQ55CLO.pem -u 495219933132 -s 1536 doesn't specify anything. So... any help? What am I missing?

  • Accidentally dd'ed an image to wrong drive / overwrote partition table + NTFS partition start

    - by Kento Locatelli
I screwed up and set the wrong output for dd when trying to copy a freenas iso, overwriting the wrong external hard drive. Ironically, I was trying to setup a freenas server for data backup... External drive is only used for data storage, system is entirely intact Drive had a single NTFS partition filing the entire device (2TB WD elements) Drive originally had an MBR partition table. Drive now shows as having a GPT, presumably from the freenas image. Drive was mounted at the time, with maybe a couple kB of data written/read after running dd Drive is just a few months old and healthy (regular SMART / fs checks) I have not reboot the OS (crunchbang) /proc/partition still holds the correct information (and has been stored) Have dd's output (records in / out / bytes) testdrive did not find any partitions on quick or deep search running photorec to recover the more important data (a couple recent plaintext files that hadn't been backed up yet). Vast majority of disk content ( 80%) is unnecessary media files. My current plan is to let photorec do it's thing, then recreate the mbr with gparted and use cfdisk to create another NTFS partition using the sector information from /sys/block/.../. Is that a good course of action (that is, a chance of success)? Or anything else I should try first?
