• Webhosting with custom database choice [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I am trying to find somewhere to host a website which uses OrientDB as its database. My budget doesn't stretch to a dedicated server where I can configure everything as I need it. Rather, I am hoping to find somewhere, ideally UK based, that will allow me to install/install for me OrientDB on their server, that is of the normal shared server variety. Is anybody able to point me in a good direction for this please (whilst UK is preferable it is not essential)?

  There are a lot of manuals. I am trying to create an database to hold information of these documents. But, there is a small problem. How can I give meaningful id to the manuals? Are there any standard or logic behind the giving meaningful id to the documents? If there is no standard, can you tell me how I should do that? example: table : manual id | manual name EDIT: Not Meaningful ID 1 or M1 or foo 2 C2 bar 3 P123 name ... ... ... • Best Way to Handle Meta Information in a SQL Database

  I've got a database where I want to store user information and user_meta information. The reason behind setting it up in this way was because the user_meta side may change over time and I would like to do this without disrupting the master user table. If possible, I would like some advice on how to best set up this meta data table. • Looking for a reporting tool that will allow vector graphics in output file (PDF)

  I have been tasked with evaluating our current system that we use for creating and outputing reports. Currently we are using Crystal Reports ver 8, (I know that this is and old version.), which has a custom commandline app that we wrote in C# to execute the report for a given parameter passed through the command line. We like Crystal becuase it's easy to setup and design the report. It's also easy to print and create a PDF file from crystal using our custom commandline program. One of the problems/complaints that we have is that Crystal does does not appear to have a method that will allow us to create a PDF file with a vector images, such as our company logo. Crystal Reports always converts an image into a bitmap. When the PDF is printed, the results are less than flattering, and the PDF file size is increased. Does anyone have any recomendadtions for a reporting product that we should consider?

Each time I try to call the ListChildren method I get an insuffient permission exception. The code is: ReportingService2005SoapClient rService = new ReportingService2005SoapClient(); CatalogItem[] cItems = null; rService.ListChildren("/", false, out cItems); I added the ASP.net (iusr) account into the local admin group on the PC and still get the exception. • Robustly killing Windows programs stuck reporting 'problems'

  I am looking for a means to kill a Windows exe program that, when being tested from a python script, crashes and presents a dialog to the user; as this program is invoked many times, and may crash repeatedly, this is not suitable. The problem dialog is the standard reporting of a Windows error: "Foo.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" and offers a Debug, Send Error Report, and Don't Send buttons. I am able to kill other forms of dialog resulting from crashes (e.g. a Debug build's assert failure dialog is OK.) I have tried taskkill.exe, pskill, and the terminate() function on the Popen object from the subprocess module that was used to invoke the .exe Has anyone encountered this specific issue, and found a resolution? I expect automating user input to select the window, and press the "Don't Send" button is one possible solution, but I would like something far simpler if possible

  Hi, I have a fairly basic SQL Server Reporting Services report that is using nested row groups. Each sub-group depends on expanding its parent to be visible which is all pretty standard. The layout is something like this: { Company { { Car SUM(Price) { { { Part Price My desired result when expanded is something like this (which I get fine): - SuperCarCompany - SuperCar 20 Door 20 - SuperCar2 70 Door 30 Window 40 - OtherCarCompany - SuperCar2 50 /* Same SuperCar2 */ Door 50 - MoreCarCompany - BestCarEver 535 Engine 500 Door 30 Window 5 And when opened initially something like this: + SuperCarCompany + OtherCarCompany + MoreCarCompany However, I'm getting this: + SuperCarCompany + SuperCar2 70 (i.e. sum of all SuperCar2) + OtherCarCompany + SuperCar 20 + MoreCarCompany + BestCarEver 535 and I can even expand these superfluous rows like this: + SuperCarCompany - SuperCar2 70 (i.e. sum of all SuperCar2) Door 30 (i.e. first child of any SuperCar2) The superflous rows dissapear immediately when I expand the expected row above it (i.e. I'd need to expand all expected rows to get rid of all superflous rows). Any idea on the cause?

  Greetings, I created a report which uses custom library created by me. I've copied these libraries to the following folders: c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.3\Reporting Services\ReportServer\bin\ c:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\ Everything works find when I run the report using Visual Studio. When I install it on Production Server (where these dlls were also copied) the following error is returned: Failed to load expression host assembly. Details: The type initializer for 'MyParserForReportingServices.MyParser' threw an exception. (rsErrorLoadingExprHostAssembly) Can someone please help me?

• Create Sum of calculated rows in Microsoft Reporting Services

  This seems like it should be simple but I can't find anything yet. In Reporting Services I have a table with up to 6 rows that all have calculated values and dynamic visibility. I would like to sum these rows. Basically I have a number of invoice items and want to make a total. I can't change anything on the DB side since my stored procedures are used elsewhere in the system. Each row pulls data from a different dataset as well, so I can't do a sum of the dataset. Can I sum all the rows with a table footer? Similarly to totaling a number of rows in Excel? It seems very redundant to put my visibility expression from each row into my footer row to calculate the sum.

  Hi everyone, I'm new to SQL Server reporting services, and am trying to decipher an existing report. It's nothing too bad, but I notice it does have two report datasets defined. (They are generated via separate stored procedures) I'm trying to figure out where and how the report datasets are linked together so the Fields collection has both sets of columns available and the report has a single rowset to traverse. Is there a section in the report layout where a joining of datasets is defined? I'm using Visual Studio 2005 to design and preview the report fwiw. Thanks for your help!

• Buy or build tool for Data Reporting ?

  We have been asked to provide a data reporting solution. The followng are the requirements: i. The client has a lot of data which is generated everyday as an outcome of the tests they run. These tests are run at several sites and they get automatically backed up into a central server. ii. They already have perl scripts which post process them and generates excel based reports. iii. They need a web based interface for comparing those reports and they need to mark and track issues which might be present in those data. I am confused if we should build our own tool for this or we should go for already exiting tool(any suggestions?). Can you please provide supportive arguments for the decision that you would suggest?

• Using Report (Reporting Services) parameter values in ASP.NET page

  I have a report (Reporting Services) integrated into an ASP.NET that shows dropdownlists to select report parameter values. The dropdownlists are populated using direct database selects, though I see the report RDL files do contain the paramter values and datasets as defined in the report designer. Is it possible to obtain the report parameters "available values" in ASP.NET to populate the dropdownlists? This would avoid some code duplication. Update If the parameter doesn't use a query for available values, the following works: foreach (ValidValue value in this.ReportViewerControl.ServerReport.GetParameters()["myParameter"].ValidValues) { this.DropDownListControl.Items.Add(new ListItem(value.Label, value.Value)); } Still haven't found a way to access report datasets though...

• Reporting. MS Word templates population required

  Application we developed fills MS Word templates with data from Database. Customers require to have ability edit Word templates via MS Word (change style, font, layout e.t.c) with no additional software to be installed and no training. AFAIK, Sql Reporting Services and Crystal Reports can't populate MS Word templates produced in MS Word. So we implemented our custom solution that maps .net classes onto xml-saved MS Word documents. It looks like we declare class MyTemplate { // maps to [age] field declared in ms document straight in the text int Age { get; set; } // maps to table by attributes applied to property (omitted) List<Person> Persons { get; set; } } We also implemented images insertion. Are there any free libraries for this task or may be you use your own MS-word templators in your projects?

Users will have different custom metrics, businesses willl have seperate metrics, the admin section will have seperate, Advertises will have seperate, etc. So basically the goal is to have 1 framework in place for all Analytics, which will be custom user to user and even use that for the system analytic needs also. It will include data analytics as there will be user ratings/reviews to perfomr data mining on for businesses, USers will have basic reporting on their needs (like friend demographics, filter by different preferences, etc). • Advanced Data Source Engine coming to Telerik Reporting Q1 2010

  This is the final blog post from the pre-release series. In it we are going to share with you some of the updates coming to our reporting solution in Q1 2010. A new Declarative Data Source Engine will be added to Telerik Reporting, that will allow full control over data management, and deliver significant gains in rendering performance and memory consumption. Some of the engines new features will be: Data source parameters - those parameters will be used to limit data retrieved from the data source to just the data needed for the report. Data source parameters are processed on the data source side, however only queried data is fetched to the reporting engine, rather than the full data source. This leads to lower memory consumption, because data operations are performed on queried data only, rather than on all data. As a result, only the queried data needs to be stored in the memory vs. the whole dataset, which was the case with the old approach Support for stored procedures - they will assist in achieving a consistent implementation of logic across applications, and are especially practical for performing repetitive tasks. A stored procedure stores the SQL statements and logic, which can then be executed in different reports and/or applications. Stored Procedures will not only save development time, but they will also improve performance, because each stored procedure is compiled on the data base server once, and then is reutilized. In Telerik Reporting, the stored procedure will also be parameterized, where elements of the SQL statement will be bound to parameters. These parameterized SQL queries will be handled through the data source parameters, and are evaluated at run time. Using parameterized SQL queries will improve the performance and decrease the memory footprint of your application, because they will be applied directly on the database server and only the necessary data will be downloaded on the middle tier or client machine; Calculated fields through expressions - with the help of the new reporting engine you will be able to use field values in formulas to come up with a calculated field. A calculated field is a user defined field that is computed "on the fly" and does not exist in the data source, but can perform calculations using the data of the data source object it belongs to. Calculated fields are very handy for adding frequently used formulas to your reports; Improved performance and optimized in-memory OLAP engine - the new data source will come with several improvements in how aggregates are calculated, and memory is managed. As a result, you may experience between 30% (for simpler reports) and 400% (for calculation-intensive reports) in rendering performance, and about 50% decrease in memory consumption. Full design time support through wizards - Declarative data sources are a great advance and will save developers countless hours of coding. In Q1 2010, and true to Telerik Reportings essence, using the new data source engine and its features requires little to no coding, because we have extended most of the wizards to support the new functionality. The newly extended wizards are available in VS2005/VS2008/VS2010 design-time. More features will be revealed on the product's what's new page when the new version is officially released in a few days. • Optimising Database Mirroring over WAN

    I recently got asked by our network guys about botlenecks in the WAN that used for mirroring to our DR I site. They asked me to turn off encryption of Database Mirroring so that the riverbed software  they were using could optimise the packets sent over the WAN. I was a bit sceptical at first about the security risks, but it seems the riverbed software has its own form of obfuscation making the packets difficult to read. After reading an article by rusanu I realised that it could be done with minimal downtime and potential reducing network traffic by 5-10% on its own. • I need an approach to the problem of preventing inserting duplicate records into the database

  Apologies is this question is asked on the incorrect "stack" A webservice that I call returns a list of data. The data from the webservice is updated periodically, so a call to the webservice done in one hour could return the same data as a call done in an hour. Also, the data is returned based on a start and end date. We have multiple users that can run the webservice search, and duplicate data is most likely to be returned (especially for historical data). However I don't want to insert this duplicate data in the database. I've created a db table in which the data is stored (most important columns are) Id int autoincrement PK Date date not null --The date to which the data set belongs. LastUpdate date not null --The date the data set was last updated. UserName varchar(50) --The name of the user doing the search. I use sql server 2008 express with c# 4.0 and visual studio 2010. Entity Framework is used as the ORM. If stored procedures could be avoided in the proposed solution, then that will be a plus. Another way of looking interpreting what I'm asking a solution for is as follows: I have a million unique records in my table. A user does a new search. The search results from the user contains around 300k of the data that is already in the db. An efficient solution to finding an inserting only the unique records is needed.

• What relational database system should I learn? [closed]

  At the moment i know sqlite (my favorite), mysql (its ok, i get annoyed) and i do not want to learn ms/t sql (it only allows one nullable row if the column is unique). I am thinking about learning a new database system. My requirements for it is Must allow multiple connections at once (read and write) All or data i choose must be ACID compliant Performance should be good. I have a 17gb table in one project. It should perform well on read and transactional writes. With mysql it took hours to restore it and there were no foreign keys on that specific table. It only finished in a workday because i found a suggestion to adjust a setting which i think was key-buffer. And it still took hours Unique columns that allow more then one row to be null. I shouldn't have to say it but dammit MS. Allows one to make ongoing backups. Something like 'binary logs'. Some relatively small amounts of data i can grab and apply it to my local db to have it in sync with the one on the server. Table joins. I rather not write a bunch of queries to simulate a join What I would like but is not required Foreign keys. This may be a requirement later Open sourced Fair tool support. So i can measure queries, easily backup/restore, etc .NET and C (or C++) interface. (I seen one that uses raw tcp with JSON which was okish) Good subquery support. Once i was working with an older version of mysql (i believe <5.1 but it could have been 5.1) and i had to write many queries to do one query because it couldn't do subqueries. Or maybe it couldnt do it efficiently and died bc of memory limitations with a huge dataset. What db system should i learn?

• Looking to create website that can have custom GUI and database per user

  I have developed an MS Access database for a company to track data in regards to production of a certain commodity. It has many many tables, forms, reports, etc. These were all done as the user requested, and resemble the users previously used system, mostly printed worksheets and excel workbooks. This has created a central location for all information and has allowed the company to compare data in a new way. I am now looking to do this for other companies, but would like to switch it to a web application. Here is my question. What is the best way to create unique solutions for individual companies that can have around 100 users each? I would love to create one site that would serve all parties, but that would ruin the customizable nature of what I am developing. I love the ability to create reports, excel sheets, pdf, graphs, etc with access, but am tired of relying on my customers software, servers, etc. I have some experience with WAMP, but I am far better at VBA. I was okay at PHP, and was getting a grasp on JavaScript a few years back. I am also trying to decide whether to go with WAMP or LAMP, if web is the best choice. Also, should I try set up one site for all users that after log-in goes to company specific pages, or individual sites for each company? Should I host or use a service?

• Choosing the Database Solution for Large Data Application

  I have been tasked to write an application that will be a combination of document and inventory management in VB.net which will be used to store document images in TIFF, PDF, XPS, TXT, DOC, PPT and so on as binary data that can be retrieved for viewing, printing, and possible OCR to be searchable as well along with meta data such as sender, recipient, type of document, date, source, etc. So the table would probably be something like: DOC_NAME, DOC_DATE, NOTES, ... DOC_BINARY (where the actual document will be put inside) What my concern is finding a database solution that will not become unstable due to size restrictions, records limitations and performance. Some of the options are MS_SQL, SQL Express, SQLite, mySQL, and Access. Now I can pretty much eliminate Access right off the bat as it is just too limiting and not scalable. I can further eliminate SQL Express because of the 2 GB limit and again scalability. So that leaves me with MS_SQL, SQLite and mySQL (although if anyone has other options they think would be good as well, please feel free to share them, by no means am I set on these only). So this brings me to what you guys think is the best option for what I have described. The goal is that the data is all in one place (a single file) that will make backup and portability easier. For small volume usage, pretty much any solution will hold for a while, but my goal is to think ahead and make sure its able to withstand heavy large volume usage as well. Another consideration is also the interoperability with .NET and stability of such code to avoid errors and memory leaks. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.
