  • Visual Studio 2012 Update 1 now available for download

    - by Greg Low
Good to see the Visual Studio 2012 team get update 1 out the door. I'm using it now and am pretty happy with it.I like the way that the tools are now being updated out of band. Hopefully, the SQL BI folk will get their templates updated to VS2012 soon too.You can get it here: http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/eng/downloads#d-visual-studio-2012-updateDetailed list of what's changed is here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/visualstudioalm/archive/2012/11/26/visual-studio-and-team-foundation-server-2012-update-1-now-available.aspx

  • Create a system image in Windows 8

    - by Greg Low
One of the things that I've just come to accept is that the designers of Windows 8 and I think very differently. It'll take a long time to convince me that shutting down the computer is a "setting". Even after using Windows 8 for quite a while now, I still find that I struggle nearly every day, just trying to do things that I previously knew how to do. That's just not a good thing.Today I decided to create a system image as I hadn't made one lately. I started in Control Panel looking for Backup options. That yielded nothing except programs that wanted to "Save backup copies of my files with file history". I thought "oh well, let's just try the new search options". I hit the Windows key and typed "Backup". No, nothing came up there either.I searched again all over the Control Panel options to no avail. So it was time to hit Google again. Once again, clearly lots of people used to know how to do this and have been trying to work out where this option went. The first trick is that there are a bunch of Control Panel options that don't appear in the Control Panel. In the address bar at the top, if you click on Control Panel, you'll find there is an option that says "All Control Panel Options". That is curious given that's where I thought I was when I opened Control Panel. No hint is given on that screen that there are a bunch of hidden options. None the less, I then checked out "all" the options. The option that you need to create a system image in Windows 8 turns out to be the "Windows 7 File Recovery" option that appears in this extended list. Why does it say "Windows 7" when it's for "Windows 8" as well and I'm running "Windows 8"? Why do I have to choose an option that says "File Recovery" to create a system image backup?<sigh>But at least I've recorded it here for the next time I forget where to find it.

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services: A generic error occurred in GDI+

    - by Greg Low
While building some maps today in SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services, I kept coming up with an error that said: A generic error occurred in GDI+ I was struggling to think what I'd done wrong. After much nashing of teeth and removal of hair, I finally worked out what the error was. When I got to the "Choose Color Scheme and Visualization" page of the map wizard for building a color analytical map, I hadn't picked the correct value for the "Field to Visualize" drop-down. I'm guessing that because...(read more)

  • Suggestion: ALLFILES option for RESTORE

    - by Greg Low
The default action when performing a backup is to append to the backup file yet the default action when restoring a backup is to restore just the first file.I constantly come across customer situations where they are puzzled that they seem to have lost data after they have completed a restore. Invariably, it's just that they haven't restored all the backups contained within a single OS file. This happens most commonly with log backups but also happens when they have not restored the most recent database backup file.It is not trivial to achieve this within simple T-SQL scripts, when the number of backup files within the OS file is unknown. It really should be.I'd like to see a FILES=ALLFILES option on the RESTORE command. For RESTORE DATABASE, it should restore the most recent database backup plus any subsequent log files. For RESTORE LOG (which is the most important missing option), it should just restore all relevant log backups that are contained. If you agree, you know what to do: please vote:  https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/769204/option-to-restore-all-backups-files-within-a-media-setAlternately, how would you write a T-SQL command to restore all log backups within a single OS file where the number of files is unknown? Would love to hear creative solutions because all the ones that I think of are pretty messy and need dynamic SQL.

  • Why does my laptop resume immediately after suspend?

    - by Igor Zinov'yev
I seem to be having some problem with suspend mode. Every time I try to suspend my laptop, it just locks the screen. Or maybe it successfully suspends just to resume only an instant after. What could cause such a behaviour? I'm running 32-bit Ubuntu 12.04 with the 3.2.0-25 kernel on a HP dv5-1178er Pavilion laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo). Here are the relevant log sections: kern.log: Jun 1 10:42:21 igor-laptop kernel: [ 2225.131171] PM: Syncing filesystems ... done. • Difficulty analyzing text from a file

    - by Nikko
    I'm running into a rather amusing error with my output on this lab and I was wondering if any of you might be able to hint at where my problem lies. The goal is find the high, low, average, sum of the record, and output original record. I started with a rather basic program to solve for one record and when I achieved this I expanded the program to work with the entire text file. Initially the program would correctly output: 346 130 982 90 656 117 595 High# Low# Sum# Average# When I expanded it to work for the entire record my output stopped working how I had wanted it to. 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 High: 0 Low: 0 Sum: 0 Average: 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 High: 0 Low: 0 Sum: 0 Average: 0 etc... I cant quite figure out why my ifstream just completely stopped bothering to input the values from file. I'll go take a walk and take another crack at it. If that doesn't work I'll be back here to check for any responses =) Thank you! #include <iostream> #include <fstream> #include <iomanip> #include <string> using namespace std; int main() { int num; int high = 0; int low = 1000; double average = 0; double sum = 0; int numcount = 0; int lines = 1; char endoline; ifstream inData; ofstream outData; inData.open("c:\\Users\\Nikko\\Desktop\\record5ain.txt"); outData.open("c:\\Users\\Nikko\\Desktop\\record5aout.txt"); if(!inData) //Reminds me to change path names when working on different computers. { cout << "Could not open file, program will exit" << endl; exit(1); } while(inData.get(endoline)) { if(endoline == '\n') lines++; } for(int A = 0; A < lines; A++) { for(int B = 0; B < 7; B++) { while(inData >> num) inData >> num; numcount++; sum += num; if(num < low) low = num; if(num > high) high = num; average = sum / numcount; outData << num << '\t'; } outData << "High: " << high << " " << "Low: " << low << " " << "Sum: " << sum << " " << "Average: " << average << endl; } inData.close(); outData.close(); return(0); }

  • Typecasting a floating value or using the math.h floor* functions?

    - by nobody
Hi, I am coding up an implementation of Interpolation Search in C. The question is actually rather simple, I need to use the floating operations to do linear interpolation to find the correct index which will eventually be an integer result. In particular my probe index is: t = i + floor((((k-low)/(high-low)) * (j-i))); where, i,j,k,t are unsigned ints, and high, low are doubles. Would this be equivalent to: t = i + (unsigned int)(((k-low)/(high-low)) * (j-i)); Is there any reason I would actually want to use math.h floor* functions over just a simple (int) typecast?

  • How efficient is an if statement compared to a test that doesn't use an if? (C++)

    - by Keand64
I need a program to get the smaller of two numbers, and I'm wondering if using a standard "if x is less than y" int a, b, low; if (a < b) low = a; else low = a; is more or less efficient than this: int a, b, low; low = b + ((a - b) & ((a - b) >> 31)); (or the variation of putting int delta = a - b at the top and rerplacing instances of a - b with that). I'm just wondering which one of these would be more efficient (or if the difference is to miniscule to be relevant), and the efficiency of if-else statements versus alternatives in general.

  • "...redeclared as different kind of symbol"?

    - by CodeNewb
#include <stdio.h> #include <math.h> double integrateF(double low, double high) { double low = 0; double high = 20; double delta_x=0; double x, ans; double s = 1/2*exp((-x*x)/2); for(x=low;x<=high;x++) delta_x = x+delta_x; ans = delta_x*s; return ans; } It says that low and high are "redeclared as different type of symbol" and I don't know what that means. Basically, all I'm doing here (READ: trying) is integrating from low (which I set to 0) to high (20) to find the Riemann sum. The for loop looks kinda trippy too...I'm so lost.

  • Wacom Bamboo CTH460L issues

    - by Robert Smith
I recently bought a Wacom Bamboo Pen & Touch CTH460L. I installed doctormo's PPA, however, the pen functionality didn't work and the touch was very glitchy (when I touched it, it immediately double clicked and began to drag elements in the screen). I tried to configure it using the wacom-utility package in the Synaptic Package Manager (version 1.21-1) but that didn't work either. Then I followed this post (#621, written by aaaalex), and after some problems trying to restart Ubuntu (graphics related problems), the pen works fine (it could be better, though) but the touch functionality doesn't work anymore. Currently I have installed xserver-xorg-input-wacom (1:0.10.11-0ubuntu7), wacom-dkms (0.8.10.2-1ubuntu1) and wacom-utility. The Wacom Utility only displays an "options" field under "Wacom BambooPT 2FG 4X5" but no other option to configure it. What is the correct way to get this tablet working on Ubuntu 10.04?. By the way, currently I can't start Ubuntu properly when the tablet is connected (in that case, Ubuntu start in low graphics mode). I need to connect it later. UPDATE: I uninstalled xserver -xorg-input-wacom, and wacom-utility because one of them prevented Ubuntu to start normally. I only re-installed wacom-dkms 0.8.10.2-1ubuntu1. The pen is working but no touch functionality. The side buttons don't work either. Thanks in advance.

  • After my laptop wakes up from sleeping/hibernating, the LCD/brightness is very low. How can I set it to default?

    - by meder
In Power Management Preferences, On AC Power tab, I have brightness to 100%. "Dim display when idle" is not checked. I know for sure my LCD brightness is capable of going higher, because if I hit Fn and F7 then it resets the monitor brightness and settings for a few seconds, but the resolution breaks and then the brightness goes back. PS: OS is Debian Lenny ( I set the tags but for clarification ) and laptop is a Thinkpad.

    I had to install CloudLinux so that I could somewhat controle the CPU ussage and more importantly the Concurrent-Connections the Websites use. But as you can see the Server load is way to high and thats why some sites take up to 10 sec. to load! Server load 22.46 (8 CPUs) (!) Memory Used 36.32% (2,959,188 of 8,146,632) (ok) Swap Used 0.01% (132 of 2,104,504) (ok) Server: 8 x Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E31230 @ 3.20GHz Memory: 8143680k/9437184k available (2621k kernel code, 234872k reserved, 1403k data, 244k init) Linux Yesterday: Total of 214,514 Page-views (Awstat) Now my question: Can I shift some of the CPU usage to the RAM? Or what else could I do to make the sites run faster (websites are dynamic - so SQL heavy) Thanks top - 06:10:14 up 29 days, 20:37, 1 user, load average: 11.16, 13.19, 12.81 Tasks: 526 total, 1 running, 524 sleeping, 0 stopped, 1 zombie Cpu(s): 42.9%us, 21.4%sy, 0.0%ni, 33.7%id, 1.9%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 8146632k total, 7427632k used, 719000k free, 131020k buffers Swap: 2104504k total, 132k used, 2104372k free, 4506644k cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 318421 mysql 15 0 1315m 754m 4964 S 474.9 9.5 95300:17 mysqld 6928 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 2.0 0.0 90:42.85 kondemand/3 476047 headus 17 0 172m 19m 10m S 1.7 0.2 0:00.05 php 476055 headus 18 0 172m 18m 9.9m S 1.7 0.2 0:00.05 php 476056 headus 15 0 172m 19m 10m S 1.7 0.2 0:00.05 php 476061 headus 18 0 172m 19m 10m S 1.7 0.2 0:00.05 php 6930 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 1.3 0.0 161:48.12 kondemand/5 6931 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 1.3 0.0 193:11.74 kondemand/6 476049 headus 17 0 172m 19m 10m S 1.3 0.2 0:00.04 php 476050 headus 15 0 172m 18m 9.9m S 1.3 0.2 0:00.04 php 476057 headus 17 0 172m 18m 9.9m S 1.3 0.2 0:00.04 php 6926 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 1.0 0.0 90:13.88 kondemand/1 6932 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 1.0 0.0 247:47.50 kondemand/7 476064 worldof 18 0 172m 19m 10m S 1.0 0.2 0:00.03 php 6927 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.7 0.0 93:52.80 kondemand/2 6929 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.3 0.0 161:54.38 kondemand/4 8459 root 15 0 103m 5576 1268 S 0.3 0.1 54:45.39 lvest

  • Multiple synonym dictionary matches in PostgreSQL full text searching

    - by Ryan VanMiddlesworth
I am trying to do full text searching in PostgreSQL 8.3. It worked splendidly, so I added in synonym matching (e.g. 'bob' == 'robert') using a synonym dictionary. That works great too. But I've noticed that it apparently only allows a word to have one synonym. That is, 'al' cannot be 'albert' and 'allen'. Is this correct? Is there any way to have multiple dictionary matches in a PostgreSQL synonym dictionary? For reference, here is my sample dictionary file: bob robert bobby robert al alan al albert al allen And the SQL that creates the full text search config: CREATE TEXT SEARCH DICTIONARY nickname (TEMPLATE = synonym, SYNONYMS = nickname); CREATE TEXT SEARCH CONFIGURATION dxp_name (COPY = simple); ALTER TEXT SEARCH CONFIGURATION dxp_name ALTER MAPPING FOR asciiword WITH nickname, simple; What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

  • How to configure a Firebird Database to run in memory

    - by Robert
I'm running a software called Fishbowl inventory and it is running on a firebird database (Windows server 2003) at this time the fishbowl software is running extremely slow when more then one user accesses the software. I'm thinking I maybe able to speed up the application by forcing the database to run "In Memory". However I can not find documentation on how to do this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. Robert

  • Using ListViews on the Android?

    - by Robert
Hey everyone, I am just getting started with the Android SDK and I had a quick question. I am trying to set up a ListView with a rectangle of color on the left and then a bit of text for each row. I also want to make it so I can click each entry in the list and open a new activity to display some information (similar to the contact list). Anyone have any examples to help me out? Thanks a ton, Robert Hill

  • Embed resource in .NET Assembly without assembly prefix?

    - by Robert Fraser
Hi all, When you embed a reosurce into a .NET assembly using Visual Studio, it is prefixed with the assembly name. However, assemblies can have embedded resources that are not assembly-name-prefixed. The only way I can see to do this is to disassemble the assembly using ildasm, then re-assemble it, adding the new resource -- which works, but... do I really need to finish that sentence? (Desktop .NET Framework 3.5, VS 2008 SP1, C#, Win7 Enterprise x64) Thanks, All the best, Robert

  • process tree

    - by Robert
I'm looking for an easy way to find the process tree (as shown by tools like Process Explorer), in C# or other .Net language. It would also be useful to find the command-line arguments of another process (the StartInfo on System.Diagnostics.Process seems invalid for process other than the current process). I think these things can only be done by invoking the win32 api, but I'd be happy to be proved wrong. Thanks! Robert

  • Hiding Group Column Names

    - by Robert
You once replied to a post about hiding list group header names. http://edinkapic.blogspot.com/2008/06/hiding-list-view-group-headers.html I do not write code or jQuery at that. But you mentioned that it would be better to write a solution in jQuery. Would you have code that would hide the group header and colon in a 2003 list (SP v.2)? Do you have any good leads? Thanks. Robert S.

  • Get nested item from XML with jQuery

I've looked at some examples on the web but I am still struggling with this. I would like to get the value for "descShort" tag within the "indexDesc" tag and then after that display the value from the "last" tag? • How much RAM 64bit Windows 8 reserves to OS internal use?

    - by Barleyman
Windows reserves some memory for it's internal use which is not normally allocated to applications. This reserve is seen most easily if you run without a page file or limit the pagefile to relatively small size (such as 3GB). Windows will allocate primarily RAM up to the limit, fill up remaining free space in the page file (if any) and issue a low memory warning when there is no page file space left and the allocated RAM limit is exceeded. The limit appears to be a percentage of the total system RAM. Windows 7 x64 limit is discussed here and methods for circumventing the "low memory warning" is discussed here. Disabling the low memory warning has some advantages - You can use some 600MB more RAM on 8GB machine) But there is a serious disadvantage - When you're out of ram, programs will crash. How much RAM can you allocate on 8GB Windows 8 x64 before you get the low memory warning? Is it possible to adjust the warning threshold?
