• Rail 3 custom renderer: where do put this code?

  I'm following along with Yehuda's example on how to build a custom renderer for Rails 3, according to this post: http://www.engineyard.com/blog/2010/render-options-in-rails-3/ I've got my code working, but I'm having a hard time figuring out where this code should live. Right now, I've got my code stuck right inside of my controller file. Doing this, everything works. When I move the code to the lib folder, though, I have explicitly 'require' my file in the controller that needs the renderer or it won't work. Yes, the file gets loaded when it sits in the lib folder, automatically. but the code to add the renderer isn't working for some reason, until I do a require on it. where should I put my code to add the renderer and mime type, so that rails 3 will pick it up and register it for me, without me having to manually require the file in my controller?

• No route matches when trying to edit

  Here's the scoop: I've created a test app that allows users to create ideas and then add "bubbles" to these ideas. Currently, a bubble is just text. I've successfully linked bubbles to ideas. Furthermore, when a user goes to view an idea it lists all of the bubbles attached to that idea. The user can even delete the bubble for any given idea. My problem lies in editing bubbles. When a user views an idea, he sees the idea's content as well as any bubbles for that idea. As a result, I've set all my bubble controls (editing and deleting) inside the ideas "show" view. My code for editing a bubble for an idea is <%= link_to 'Edit Bubble', edit_idea_bubble_path %>. I ran rake routes to find the correct path for editing bubbles and that is what was listed. Here's my error: No route matches {:action=>"edit", :controller=>"bubbles"} In my bubbles controller I have: def edit @idea = Idea.find(params[:idea_id]) @bubble = @idea.bubbles.find(params[:id]) end def update @idea = Idea.find(params[:idea_id]) @bubble = @idea.bubbles.find(params[:id]) respond_to do |format| if @bubble.update_attributes(params[:bubble]) format.html { redirect_to(@bubble, :notice => 'Bubble was successfully updated.') } format.xml { head :ok } else format.html { render :action => "Edit" } format.xml { render :xml => @bubble.errors, :status => :unprocessable_entity } end end end To go a step further, I have the following in my routes.rb file resources :ideas do resources :bubbles end So far everything seems to function except when I try to edit a bubble. This is my first article!", comments: [{content: "It sucks"}, {content: "Best article ever!"}] }], without_protection: true) However rake db:seed gives me the following error message: rake aborted! Comment(#28467560) expected, got Hash(#13868840) Tasks: TOP => db:seed (See full trace by running task with --trace) It is possible to seed the database like this? If yes a follow-up question: I've searched some and it seems that to do this kind of (nested?) mass assignment I need to add 'accepts_nested_attributes_for' for the attributes I want to assign. (Possibly something like 'accepts_nested_attributes_for :article' for the Comment model) Is there a way to allow this similar to the 'without_protection: true'? Because I only want to accept this kind of mass assignment when seeding the database.

• Should I include the binary in a Rails plugin or not?

  Hello. I'm trying to roll out a little Rails plugin that is basically is just a wrapper to a 7zip archiver. Should I include the 7zip binaries for windows, mac and linux with it or explain to user that it's a dependency and they need to get it working. I know it's not that difficult to install a 7zip, but what is the best practice in general. The reason I'm asking is cause I've ran so many times into gems that need some sort of dependency that doesn't compile properly or is not available in ready form for the OS in question and then I end up spending have a day hunting down for a binary or a way to compile the program. (Have happened to me both on Mac and Windows, not on Debian so far. )

• How do I do a join in ActiveRecord after records have been returned?

  I am using ActiveRecord in Rails 3 to pull data from two different tables in two different databases. These databases can not join on each other, but I have the need to do a simple join after-the-fact. I would like to preserve the relation so that I can chain it down the line. here is a simplified version of what I am doing browsers = Browser.all # <-- this is fairly small and can reside in memory events = Event.where(:row_date=>Date.today).select(:name, :browser_id) So as you can see, I want to join browsers in on the events relation, where browser_id should equal browsers.name. events is a relation and I can still add clauses to it down the line, so I dont want to run the query on the db just yet. How would I accomplish this?

  I'm trying to allow users to 'favorite' links (that is, create a new Favorite record with their user_id and the link_id) This is what I have so far.. When I click favorite (as a user), the new record is assigned to the user_id but the link_id field is nil. How can I pass the link_id into my FavoritesController?   I have a Location that can have Events. I want to have an upcoming_events method but want it to round down such that if someone looks at 10pm at night, it will show todays events. • Linking two models in a multi-model form

  Hey Guys, I have a nested multimodel form right now, using Users and Profiles. Users has_one profile, and Profile belongs_to Users. When the form is submitted, a new user is created, and a new profile is created, but they are not linked (this is the first obvious issue). The user's model has a profile_id row, and the profile's model has a user_id row.   Hey Guys, I've just started using the .where method, and I'm a little bit confused about how to fully utilize it. I'd like to do something like: @books = Book.where(:author_id => 1 || 2) clearly I know that doesn't work, but I'm trying to demonstrate that I want some extra logic here. some "or" "and" "does not equal" etc. Any ideas for where I can research this? • Too Few Arguments

  I am trying to get some Javascript working in my Rails app. I want to have my index page allow me to edit individual items on the index page, and then reload the index page upon edit. • Namespaced controller redirect urls

  Hello, i have probably a simple question. I have created a namespace panel with categories controller. After creating or editing a category, rails redirects me to website.com/categories/:id instead of website.com/panel/categories/:id. I've noticed that in the _form view, the @panel_categories argument of form_for() function points to /categories nor /panel/categories and that's causing this behaviour. Offcourse i can add a :url => '/panel/categories' param but i feel that it's not the best solution... Can you provide me any better solution? • How to create view in RoR if skipped during controller generation

  When I run this: rails generate controller hello index it no doubt generates hello controller, but accidentally when I run another command like this: rails generate controller world it creates the world controller successfully, but missed the Route "world/index" like as "hello/index". For this mistake I need to use destroy controller and then generate it once more, is thr some kind of mid way command that I can generate if forgotten something rather than destroying and creating every time. This command rails generate controller contact-us index creates a route as contact_us/index or contact_us after changing routes.rb under config folder. How could I create a more SEO friendly URL in RoR? Like localhost:3000/contact-us? I am working on some very basic rules to follow RoR..like 3 static pages (Home, About us, Contact Us) Just simple html content to understand more, will certainly add more features to it as well. localhost:3000/home localhost:3000/About_us localhost:3000/contact_us I created this via creating home, About_us, contact_us controller command and then changed html in views. Since I am on an initial phase, I read somewhere for static pages we can create this in our public like what we have error pages there in the folder or the approach im using is correct?

  I am using Sunspot and Will_paginate for search in my application and don't how to have my search results start out with certain ordering conditions. The model I am searching is the UserPrice model and want my :price and :purchase_date in descending order or lowest price to highest and present date to past: class UserPrice < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible :price, :product_name, :purchase_date belongs_to :product # Sunspot configuration searchable do text :product_name do product.name end end end class SearchController < ApplicationController def index @search = UserPrice.search do fulltext params[:search] paginate(:per_page => 5, :page => params[:page]) end @user_prices = @search.results end end Even though I don't know how, I'm not sure if I would use Sunspot or Will_paginate to sort by order of price and purchase date. How would I achieve this though? Thank you. How do I fix this?

• Why is Routes.rb not loading the IPs from cache?

  I am testing this in local. My ip is 127.0.0.1. The ip_permissions table, is empty. When I browse the site, everything works as expected. Now, I want to simulate browsing the site with a banned IP. So I add the IP into the ip_permissions table via: IpPermission.create!(:ip => '127.0.0.1', :note => 'foobar', :category => 'blacklist') In Rails console, I clear the cache via; Rails.cache.clear. I browse the site. I don't get sent to pages#blacklist. If I restart the server. And browse the site, then I get sent to pages#blacklist. Why do I need to restart the server every time the ip_permissions table is updated? Shouldn't it fetch it based on cache?
