• Apache mod_rewrite driving me mad

  The scenario I have a webhost that is shared among multiple sites, the directory layout looks like this: siteA/ - css/ - js/ - index.php siteB/ - css/ - js/ - index.php siteC/ . . . The DocumentRoot is at the top level, so, to access siteA, you type http://webhost/siteA in your browser, to access siteB, you type http://webhost/siteB, and so on. Now I have to deploy my own site, which was designed with having 3 VirtualHosts in mind, so my structure looks like this: siteD/ - sites/sitename.com/ - log/ - htdocs/ - index.php - sites/static.sitename.com - log/ - htdocs/ - css - js - sites/admin.sitename.com - log/ - htdocs/ - index.php As you see, the problem is that my index.php files are not at the top level directory, unlike the already existing sites on the webhost. Each VirtualHost should point to the corresponding htdocs/ folder: http://siteD.com -> siteD/sites/sitename.com/htdocs http://static.siteD.com -> siteD/sites/static.sitename.com/htdocs http://admin.siteD.com -> siteD/sites/admin.sitename.com/htdocs The problem I cannot have VirtualHosts on this host, so I have to emulate it somehow, possibly with mod_rewrite. The idea Have some predefined parts in all of the links on the site, that I can identify, and route accordingly to the correct file, with mod_rewrite. Examples: http://webhost/siteD/static/js/something.js -> siteD/sites/static.sitename.com/htdocs/js/something.js http://webhost/siteD/static/css/something.css -> siteD/sites/static.sitename.com/htdocs/css/something.css http://webhost/siteD/admin/something -> siteD/sites/admin.sitename.com/htdocs/index.php http://webhost/siteD/admin/sub/something -> siteD/sites/admin.sitename.com/htdocs/index.php http://webhost/siteD/something -> siteD/sites/sitename.com/htdocs/index.php http://webhost/siteD/sub/something -> siteD/sites/sitename.com/htdocs/index.php Anything that starts with http://url/sitename/admin/(.*) will get rewritten, to point to siteD/sites/admin.sitename.com/htdocs/index.php Anything that starts with http://url/sitename/static/(.*) will get rewritten, to point to siteD/sites/static.sitename.com/htdocs/$1 Anything that starts with http://url/sitename/(.*) AND did not have a match already from above, will get rewritten to point to siteD/sites/sitename.com/htdocs/index.php The solution Here is the .htaccess file that I've come up with: RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/siteD/static/(.*)$ [NC] RewriteRule ^siteD/static/(.*)$ siteD/sites/static/htdocs/$1 [L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/siteD/admin/(.*)$ [NC] RewriteRule ^siteD/(.*)$ siteD/sites/admin/htdocs/index.php [L,QSA] So far, so good. It's all working. Now to add the last rule: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/siteD/(.*)$ [NC] RewriteRule ^siteD/(.*)$ siteD/sites/public/htdocs/index.php [L,QSA] And it's broken. The last rule catches everything, even the ones that have static/ or admin/ in them. Why? Shouldn't the [L] flag stop the rewriting process in the first two cases? Why is the third case evaluated? Is there a better way of solving this? I'm not sticking to rewritemod, anything is fine as long as it does not need access to server-level config. I don't have access to RewriteLog, or anything like that. Please help :(

• How do I host multiple independent, secured SharePoint sites (WSS 3.0) without using Active Directory on the same server?

  I have a SharePoint site set up on one of my networks to service Active Directory users. To be clear, this is a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 installation running on Windows Server 2003 Standard. It is not an option to upgrade the server or SharePoint version. Management would like to create several new sites, one for each of a handful of clients. These sites will be used like "dropboxes" or FTP sites so that my company can make large files available to outside contacts, and vice versa. Here are my requirements: I do not want to have to create Active Directory accounts for each external contact. If possible, I would like to store the external usernames and passwords in a database that I can write a small GUI for so that management can handle adding their own external contacts. Each client site must be sandboxed from each other and from my main company SharePoint site. I would like to keep everything running on port 80 and be able to access the sites as either clientname.mycompany.com or www.mycompany.com/clientname If anybody has ever done this I would really appreciate hearing about any lessons you learned and suggestions for how to set this up. • Why can't I route to some sites from my MacBook Pro that I can see from my iPad?

  I am on M1 Cable (residential) broadband in Singapore. I have an intermittent problem routing to some sites from my MacBook Pro—often Google-related sites (arduino.googlecode.com and ajax.googleapis.com right now, but sometimes even gmail.com.) This prevents StackExchange chat from working, for instance. Funny thing is, my iPad can route to those sites and they're on the same wireless network! I can ping the sites, but not traceroute to them which I find odd. That I can get through via the iPad implies the problem is with the MBP. In any case, calling M1 support is... not helpful. I get the same behaviour when I bypass the Airport Express entirely and plug the MBP directly into the cable modem. • Is there a limit to how many sites can be hosted on a single IP address when using HTTP Host Headers on Windows 2008?

  For reasons that are lost in the mists of time, our older Windows (2000, 2003) servers have been configured with a "Administrative" IP address and three further "Hosting" IP addresses. There are also additional IP's for sites with SSL certificates. The "Administrative" IP address is where all our internal provisioning, monitoring and other such apps are bound to. We lock this down and don't permit access to it from the outside world (other than over our VPN). The three "Hosting" IP addresses are used for IIS website hosting (in conjunction with host headers). Historically, new site IP address allocations have been rotated through these three IP addresses. I'm not really sure why. I'm building a new batch of servers and I'm considering just having a single hosting IP address. Our servers can host up to 1200 sites on a single machine. Is there a technical limit to the number of IIS sites that can bind to a single IP address? Our Linux platform seems to do just fine with just a single shared IP + host headers. I initially thought this might be an SEO thing, but given that IPv4 address space conservation is paramount I hardly think Google or other search engines could reasonably penalise site rankings just because hundreds of sites hang off the same IP.

  Ok, so I had this working just fine before making a few controller additions and the relocation of some code. I feel like I am missing something really simple here but have spent hours trying to figure out what is going on. Here is the situation. class Question < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :sites end and class Sites < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :questions end I am trying to display my Sites in order of the sum of the 'like' column in the Sites Table. From my previous StackOverflow question I had this working when the partial was being called in the /views/sites/index.html.erb file. I then moved the partial to being called in the /views/questions/show.html.erb file and it successfully displays the Sites but fails to order them as it did when being called from the Sites view. • Two different sites, same IP, same top-level domain, on IIS 7.5 -- one works and the other displays HTTP 404 error

  I'm running a Windows 2008 R2 box with IIS 7.5 as the web server. On IIS, I have two websites: mysubsite1.mysite.com and mysubsite2.mysite.com. There is only one IP on the server and both sites share this IP. Here is how I have the bindings configured: mysubsite1.mysite.com works fine. However, mysubsite2.mysite.com gives me the following error: Not Found HTTP Error 404. The requested resource is not found. Now, if I change the Host name field for mysubsite1.mysite.com to blank and restart the web server, both sites work! The question is why is the host name field for the first site causing an HTTP 404 error for the second site when both sites' Host name fields are filled? I would appreciate any insight. Thank you.

• Why do all my sites randomly stop in iis?

  I have a GoDaddy Account with a virtual hosting environment. For some reason every few weeks, all of our sites (both websites and FTP sites) are stopped. I restart them and they start normally, but I would like to prevent this from happening in the future. It is an iis thing. When you open up iis you can see that each of the sites has been stopped in iis. Also, I have tried looking at the event viewer and I don't see anything, but I am not sure what I am looking for.

• Terminal command to change permissions to my 'Sites' folder and apply change to enclosed items?

  Using Snow Leopard, I'm having issues with permissions in my Sites folder. While I can navigate to localhost/~username and read any files or folders there, the same permissions have not been applied to enclosed items, and I get a 403 error trying to access them in the browser. If I select one of these enclosed folders and get info using Finder, I see the user 'Everyone' is set to 'No Access' but I can't change that (this behavior seems buggy, actually). And if I select my 'Sites' folder, the tool to 'Apply to enclosed items' is grayed out... Is there a Terminal command I can use to grant 'Read Only' access to my Sites folder, and all it contains, for the user 'Everyone'?

  When JPEG images are used by a web page, they are typically rendered top-down ... but they can also be rendered using a mode called progressive JPEG, where the image starts out full-size, but blurry, and then gets sharper with successive passes, until it's fully loaded. Progressive loading requires the image have been saved that way. Why don't more web sites use progressive JPEG? What are the drawbacks? Is it simply a lack of tool support, or are these files somehow inferior to traditional top-down rendered JPEG images?

The three i know are http://codepad.org/ shows source and runs code online http://www.pastie.org/ share source with syntax highlighting http://jsfiddle.net/ great for JS help or for the occasional test. What else do you know of? One answer per question. I'll let lints and validators slide since you do paste code into them. Mention a weakness if you do know one so others wont be surprised or disappointed.

  It seems like I've been plagued with memory usage issues most of the time I've been blogging (7 years). I upgraded my hosting to a HostGator VPS and still seem to have issues. I have about a dozen WP 3.4.2 sites running within a single account. Each has a separate installation. I finally installed TPC! Memory Usage within one of my WP installs to see what was going on. The memory usage just standing still is on the order of 40 MB. This seems high, but I don't know. What would be a reasonable memory usage for these WP installs? Do I need to take other things into account, or am I even looking at it the right way?

  Say we've produced a widget for other sites to use, like so: <iframe src="http://example.com/whatever.php" frameBorder="0" width="200px" height="300px" scrolling="no"></iframe> The client would like to be able to see within GA who has embedded the thing. Is there some referer information automatically passed that I can look for, or do I need to add something? whatever.php is already loading the analytics Javascript(we're also tracking clicks on an outbound link). [EDIT] Looking around a bit more, I found what seems to be a similar question on SO with an answer saying this can be found, automatically, but I still can't seem to find the information. The question's also old enough the respondent is probably referring to the old interface, though. Maybe someone could explain getting to it in the new look. (I won't likely be able to train this client to switch, deal with the old look, etc.)

Is that correct? Or would it be just an SEO boost for that particular URL? If it is just an SEO boost for the particular URL, it does me little good since that page does not link to any of my other pages. Am I thinking about this correctly? How are these things typically handled so that there is a benefit to my site's SEO?
