• How safe am I signing into Google Spreadsheets with yeroon.net/ggplot2

  I am impressed by what I have seen of yeroon.net/ggplot2 which is a web interface for Hadley Wickham's R package ggplot2. I want to try it out on my own data. The part that has me very excited is that one can use data stored in one's own Google spreadsheet as the data. One just signs into their Google Account so that yeroon.net/ggplot2 can access the spreadsheet list. I have been hesitant to do it. If I sign in whilst on yeroon.net am I handing over my username and password to a third party? It would not be wise of me to divulge my google password to third parties since Google is fast becoming my repository of everything. How do I know if Jeroon's application is using ClientLogin or OAuth? My understanding is very basic and may be wrong but nevertheless here it is. OAuth would be better since it does not actually pass the password onto the third party application.

• Simplest solution to replace a tiny file inside an MSI?

  Many of our customers have access to InstallShield, WISE or AdminStudio. These aren't a problem. I'm hoping there is some way I can provide our smaller customers without access to commercial repackaging tools a freely available set of tools and steps to do the file replacement themselves. Only need to replace a single configuration file inside a compressed MSI, the target user can be assumed to already have Orca installed, know how to use this to customize the Property table (to embed license details for GPO deployment) and have generated an MST file. Disclaimer: this is very similar to another question but both questions and answers in that thread are not clear.

• Is it a good idea to cache data from web services into a database?

  Let's assume that Stackoverflow offers web services where you can retrieve all the questions asked by a specific user. A request to get all question from user A can result in the following json output: { { "question": "What is rest?", "date_created": "20/02/2010", "votes": 1, }, { "question": "Which database to use for ...", "date_created": "20/07/2009", "votes": 5, }, } If I want to manipulate and present the data in any ways that I want, will it be wise to dump it in a local database? At some point, I will also want to retrieve all answers for each question and store them in a local database. The workflow that I'm thinking is: User logs in. Web services retrieve all questions asked by the logged in user, dump them in a local database. User wants all answers for a specific question, another web service does the retrieval and dump them in a local database. After user logs out, delete from the local database all questions and answers from that user.

• Building resultset using collection object

  Hi, I had an issue in building the resultset using java. Here it goes... I am storing a collection object which is organized as row wise taken from a resultset object and putting the collection object(which is stored as vector/array list) in cache and trying to retrieve the same collection object. • Prevent SQL injection from form-generated SQL.

  Hi all, I have a search table where user will be able to filter results with a filter of the type: Field [Name], Value [John], Remove Rule Field [Surname], Value [Blake], Remove Rule Field [Has Children], Value [Yes], Remove Rule Add Rule So the user will be able to set an arbitrary set of filters, which will result essentially in a completely dynamic WHERE clause. In the future I will also have to implement more complicated logical expressions, like Where (name=John OR name=Nick) AND (surname=Blake OR surname=Bourne), Of all 10 fields the user may or may not filter by, I don't know how many and which filters the user will set. So, I cannot use a prepared statement (which assumes that at least we know the fields in the WHERE clause). This is why prepared statements are unfortunately out of the question, I have to do it with plain old, generated SQL. What measures can I take to protect the application from SQL Injection (REGEX-wise or any other way)?

• ASP.NET Web Service - Passing a base object with list/collection?

  We need to create a simple web service in ASP.NET that can be called from PHP or other languages. This in turn will be used to update records in a database for an item submission. The core part is fairly simple, we have a base set of fields for the object - first name, last name, birth date, city, etc. In addition however we need to accept a list of items associated with that object that can range from 0-n. Jan 1 2009, ABC May 1 2010, 123 Jun 30 2010, XXXXX What would be the best way to structure this so it can be easily passed to the ASP.NET web service and processed as a single call for the entire object? Would passing the list of items as a single delimted string be a wise approach? Ex: Jan 1 2009, ABC|May 1 2010, 123|Jun 30 2010, XXXXX

• Using Spotlight as the "database" of an application

  I'm developing an OS X application to organize "things" (as iTunes is to music and iPhoto to photos). Instead of having my own database and index, I'm considering using Spotlight to essentially serve this purpose. Has anyone tried this? Is it wise? The main benefit, as I see it, would be simplicity and avoiding redundancy. It seems a bit wasteful to implement my own index machinery when OS X comes with one built in. I have little experience working with Spotlight, however. From a user's perspective, I do know that it has been slow and imprecise in older versions of OS X. I also have a gut-feeling that since it's aimed at searching the whole filesystem, using it for "local" purposes becomes hackish. Obviously, my applications's index needs to constantly be up-to-date. Can mdimport be used for this?

• Code working in jsFiddle but not in browser...

  I'm trying to run the following code, written on my local machine: http://www.jsfiddle.net/WShdx/3/ Functionality-wise (ignore the broken images in the previous and next buttons, and the wrongly-sized main images) the click/hover function is working properly in jsfiddle. However, on my local machine it's not working at all.   I am going to develop a Google Gadget container site, that will be able to host OpenSocial compatible widgets (that I believe are Google gadgets, too, right?). Do you have any guidance where to start? I know that the good start is the iGoogle Developer Home site and that framework what I would like exists - Shindig, but is little clumsy. Tutorial links do not work, for start. Do you think it would be wise to use Shindig? Maybe just for a start and then develop any customizations, if needed? Or would be wiser to start from scratch? So where to start? Do you have any advices, tips or other useful resources to get on faster with this topic? I guess I can start with Compliance - Gadget Server?

• Rotation towards an object in 3d space

  hello, i have two coordinates on a 2d plane in 3d space, and am trying to rotate one coordinate (a vector) to face the other coordinate. my vertical axis is the y-axis, so if both of the coordinates are located flat on the 2d plane, they would both have a y-axis of 0, and their x and z coordinates determine their position length/width-wise on the plane. right now, i'm calculating the angle like so (language agnostic): angle = atan2(z2-z1,x2-x1); and am rotating/translating in space like so: pushMatrix(); rotateY(angle); popMatrix(); this doesn't seem to be working though. are my calculations/process correct?

• Security precautions and techniques for a User-submitted Code Demo Area

  Hey folks Maybe this isn't really feasible. But basically, I've been developing a snippet-sharing website and I would like it to have a 'live demo area'. For example, you're browsing some snippets and click the Demo button. A new window pops up which executes the web code. I understand there are a gazillion security risks involved in doing this - XSS, tags, nasty malware/drive by downloads, pr0n, etc. etc. etc. The community would be able to flag submissions that are blatantly naughty but obviously some would go undetected (and, in many cases, someone would have to fall victim to discover whatever nasty thing was submitted). So I need to know: What should I do - security wise - to make sure that users can submit code, but that nothing malicious can be run - or executed offsite, etc? For your information my site is powered by PHP using CodeIgniter. Jack

• Why packets injected with libpcap are duplicated?

  I'm using sharppcap in order to send packets as part of a monitoring system. Usually it works well but I've encountered the strangest bug on a hosted vista machine and I would like your help. On that virtual vista machine, injected packets are duplicated. That is, if I send a ping request using libpcap, it somehow gets duplicated and I get two requests on the destination machine. The two requests are almost identical byte-wise, and the only difference between them is that the second packet's TTL field is one minus the original packet's value. Using wireshark I can see the packet gets duplicated before it (and its clone) leave the vista machine. The problem is manifested even when using other tools for injecting packets using libpcap (namely PlayCap). Any ideas?

• std::string == operator not working

  Hello, I've been using std::string's == operator for years on windows and linux. Now I am compiling one of my libraries on linux, it uses == heavily. On linux the following function fails, because the == returns false even when the strings are equal (case sensitive wise equal) const Data* DataBase::getDataByName( const std::string& name ) const { for ( unsigned int i = 0 ; i < m_dataList.getNum() ; i++ ) { if ( m_dataList.get(i)->getName() == name ) { return m_dataList.get(i); } } return NULL; } The getName() method is declared as follows virtual const std::string& getName() const; I am building with gcc 4.4.1 and libstdc++44-4.4.1. • Whats the best way to stop this app crash when buttons rapidly pressed iphone obj-c

  Hi, I'm not entirely sure why this crash is happening and I'd like to get advice on the best way to deal with it. My app has 3 buttons. Each button requests a different XML file from a server which is used to populate a table view. If I rapidly press the buttons in sequence , button 1 button 2 button3 button 1 button 2 button3 button 1 button 2 button3 the application quits. What could be causing this. Would id be in the NSURLRequest side of things or the table view population side? How would you suggest I stop this behaviour? I was going to just set a boolean "isRequesting" to true when a button is pressed and set it to false when the table view is finished populating. If any button is pressed while isRequesting is True they do nothing. Does that sound wise or is there a better way? Thanks, dub

• What's so bad about in-line CSS?

  When I see website starter code and examples, the CSS is always in a separate file, named something like "main.css", "default.css", or "Site.css". However, when I'm coding up a page, I'm often tempted to throw the CSS in-line with a DOM element, such as by setting "float: right" on an image. I get the feeling that this is "bad coding", since it's so rarely done in examples. I understand that if the style will be applied to multiple objects, it's wise to follow "Don't Repeat Yourself" (DRY) and assign it to a CSS class to be referenced by each element. However, if I won't be repeating the CSS on another element, why not in-line the CSS as I write the HTML? The question: Is using in-line CSS considered bad, even if it will only be used on that element? If so, why? Example (is this bad?): <img src="myimage.gif" style="float:right" />

If am not mistaken semantic mistakes deal with problems concerning meanings, for example writing a sentence that is correct grammar wise but doesn't make any sense is a semantic mistake, morphological mistakes deals more or less on how the word should look like, for example childrenS is a morphological mistake, so that leaves lexical mistakes, what are those exactly?? can someone sum up the differences between those 3 mistakes please so that I may know for sure that I got them down correctly?   Hello. My application is a product which will have reporting capabilities. The product, when in production, is expected to have several ad-hoc report defined by the end users. I am looking for a platform that can be tailored to harness the business entities and extend reporting capabilities (definition & execution) to the end user. Here are some constraints: From the usability standpoint, I like what MS Access reports offer. But of course it is not suitable for the target web application. However, it certainly is a source of inspiration usability wise. Cost is a constraint. So something recommended from open source world will be appreciated. Otherwise too I'd like to know. The product in question is somewhat 'generic' in nature. Mine is a ASP.Net platform.

  I have a project on heroku working fine. Now I want to create same project with different url (same code) as the one I have working now. So that I can give the new url to the customer as a 'test' site. I know in heroku i can just rename the url but I want to completely separate development from test (database wise). What is the best solution? Do I start from scratch? cd into new folder on my machine...clone project from github...make new database -test ...push to heroku...etc. etc.

• Will SQL Server Partitioning increase performance without changing filegroups

  Scenario I have a 10 million row table. I partition it into 10 partitions, which results in 1 million rows per partition but I do not do anything else (like move the partitions to different file groups or spindles) Will I see a performance increase? Is this in effect like creating 10 smaller tables? If I have queries that perform key lookups or scans, will the performance increase as if they were operating against a much smaller table? I'm trying to understand how partitioning is different from just having a well indexed table, and where it can be used to improve performance. Would a better scenario be to move the old data (using partition switching) out of the primary table to a read only archive table? Is having a table with a 1 million row partition and a 9 million row partition analagous (performance wise) to moving the 9 million rows to another table and leaving only 1 million rows in the original table?

• Can documents indexed with Solr on JDK6 be retrieved using only lucene api on JDK1.4?

  My runtime environment is still on JDK1.4 but I like the Solr features related to how documents are ingested and indexed. Would I be able to index my documents using Solr offline on a recent version of the JDK, copy the index over and use it in my runtime environment with an older version of the JDK? Version wise, Solr 1.4.0 uses Apache Lucene 2.9.1 which is JDK1.4 compatible. (but Solr itself requires JDK5). Assuming what I'm trying to do is even possible, what features would I lose if I search Solr indices only with the Lucene API?

• Should I commit or rollback a transaction that creates a temp table, reads, then deletes it?

  To select information related to a list of hundreds of IDs... rather than make a huge select statement, I create temp table, insert the ids into it, join it with a table to select the rows matching the IDs, then delete the temp table. So this is essentially a read operation, with no permanent changes made to any persistent database tables. I do this in a transaction, to ensure the temp table is deleted when I'm finished. My question is... what happens when I commit such a transaction vs. let it roll it back? Performance-wise... does the DB engine have to do more work to roll back the transaction vs committing it? Is there even a difference since the only modifications are done to a temp table?
