  • Expressing the UI for Enterprise Applications with JavaFX 2.0 FXML - Part One

    A new article, the first of two parts, now up on otn/java by Oracle Evangelist and JavaFX expert, James L. Weaver, titled “Expressing the UI for Enterprise Applications with JavaFX 2.0 FXML, Part One,” shows developers how to leverage the power of the FX Markup Language (FXML) to define the UI in enterprise applications.As Weaver explains, “JavaFX 2.0 is an API and runtime for creating Rich Internet Applications (RIAs). JavaFX was introduced in 2007, and version 2.0 was released in October 2011. One of the advantages of JavaFX 2.0 is that the code can be written in the Java language using mature and familiar tools.”He goes on to show how to use the potential of FX Markup Language, which comes with JavaFX 2.0, to efficiently define the user interface for enterprise applications. FXML functions to enable the expression of the UI using XML. “Classes that contain FXML functionality are located in the javafx.fxml package,” says Weaver, “and they include FXMLLoader, JavaFXBuilderFactory, and an interface named Initializable.” Weaver’s article offers a sample application that shows how to use the capabilities of FXML and JavaFX 2.0 to create an enterprise app. Have a look at the article here.

  • MVP Pattern Philsophical Question - Security Checking in UI

    Hello, I have a philosophical question about the MVP pattern: I have a component that checks whether a user has access to a certain privilege. This privilege turns on or off certain UI features. For instance, suppose you have a UI grid, and for each row that gets bound, I do a security check to see if certain features in the grid should be enabled or disabled. There are two ways to do this: have the UI/view call the component's method, determine if it has access, and enable/disable or show/hide. The other is have the view fire an event to the presenter, have the presenter do the check and return the access back down to the view through the model or through the event arg. As per the MVP pattern, which component should security checks fit into, the presenter or the view? Since the view is using it to determine its accessibility, it seems more fitting in the view, but it is doing database checks and all inside this business component, and there is business logic there, so I can see the reverse argument too. Thoughts? Thanks.

  • Ubuntu 12.04 VPN default route issue when using the UI

    When setting up a VPN connection using the UI (System settings = Network) the VPN connection is used as the default route after connecting to it. How can I avoid this? That is without assigning manual addresses. I want the connection to use DHCP. It should use the eth* interfaces for my default route, like they are used before making the connection. The VPN route should only be used when connecting to addresses in the ppp0 adapters range. If possible using the UI only, not that I'm not used to editing config files... But the point of using Ubuntu for me was the "it just works" concept (which is true for 99% of the time, keep up the good work). I tried setting the "Method" combobox in the "Configure..." dialogue to "Automatic (VPN) addresses only". That doesn't make a difference. (Another thing I noticed; the UI shows my connection as a "Wireless connection" in the list control on the left. Don't know why... it has the right icon, but that's probably something for the bug tracker)

  • Oracle ADF and Simplified UI Apps: I18n Feng Shui on Display

    I demoed the Hebrew language version of Oracle Sales Cloud Release 8 live in Israel recently. The crowd was yet again wowed by the simplified UI (SUI). I’ve now spent some time playing around with most of the 23 language versions, or the NLS (Natural Language Support) versions as we’d call them, available in Release 8. Hebrew Oracle Sales Cloud Release 8 The simplified UI is built using 100% Oracle ADF. This framework is a great solution for developers to productively build tablet-first, mobility-driven apps for users who work and live using natural languages other than English. Oracle ADF’s internationalization (i18n) relies on built-in Java and Unicode,  packing in i18n goodness such as Bi-Di (or bi-directional) flipping of pages, locale-enabled resource bundles, date and time support, and so on. Comparing German (left) and Hebrew Bi-Di (right) page components in the simplified UI. Note the change in the direction of the arrows and positions of the text. So, developers who need to build global apps don’t have to do anything special when using Oracle ADF components, all thanks to the baked-in UX Feng Shui, as Grant Ronald of the ADF team would say to the UK Oracle User Group.     SharePoint list items have in the the base Item template a field named Order. This field is not shown by default. SharePoint 2007, 2010 and 2013 have a possibility to specify the order in a UI, using the _layouts page: {SiteUrl}/_layouts/Reorder.aspx?List={ListId} In SharePoint 2010 and 2013 it is possible to add a custom action to a list. It is possible to add a custom action to order list items as follows (SharePoint 2010 description): Open SharePoint Designer 2010 Navigate to a list Select Custom Actions > List Item Menu Fill in the dialog box: Open List Settings > Advanced Settings > Content Types, and set Allow management of content types to No  On List Settings select Column Ordering This results in the following UI in the browser: Selecting the custom Order Items action (under List Tools > Items) results in: You can change your custom action in SharePoint designer. On the list screen in the bottom right corner you can find the custom action: We now need to modify the view to include the order by adding the Order field to the view, and sorting on the Order field. Problem is that the Order field is hidden. It is possible to modify the schema of the Order field to set the Hidden attribute to FALSE. If we don’t want to write code to do it and still get the required result it is also possible to modify the view through SharePoint Designer: Modify the code of the view: This results in: Note that if you change the view through the web UI these changes are partly lost. If this is a problem modify the Order field schema for the list.

  • Should Android and iPhone UI be different?

    I'm not completely new to developing apps, but I'm at a point where I'm trying to develop something and deploy it on several mobile platforms. To only concentrate on two major ones, suppose I'm developing an app for Android and iPhone and designing UI and the general user interaction architecture. Both platforms give guidelines as to how their UIs should work. For example, most iPhone apps have the Navigation Bar (the one that says Testing 1 and has a Back button) and an Icon Bar for navigating a program, while Android uses an Options Menu fetched via a Menu button and the "back" navigation is handled with the physical Back button on the device. I've seen many apps that try to force the same UI on every platform. For example, custom-building an iPhone style Icon Bar and putting it in their Android apps, but it just doesn't quite look right to me and it feels like it violates UI design guidelines somewhat. Are there any good design patters for implementing something sufficiently similar on both platforms, yet still platform-specific enough so that the user would not feel out of their comfort zone? What do people usually do in these situations?

    I came across this error when i was trying to ajaxify my sharepoint site. After adding the AjaxifyMoss from the codeplex  developed by Richard Finn. And tried loading my site i got the error Error: The base type 'System.Web.UI.MasterPage' is not allowed for this page So  i decided to check the web.config and i noticed the SafeControl tag doesn't have the .Net 2.0 assembly included despite the fact i added both vsersios 2.0 and 3.5. Its possible the.Net  3.5 assebply overwrote the 2.0. Anyway after i added the below which is the 2.0 verison       <SafeControl Assembly="System.Web, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a" Namespace="System.Web.UI" TypeName="*" Safe="True" AllowRemoteDesigner="True" />  And refreshed my page. It worked

    I have a schedule table I'm using jQuiry Sortable for editing. Each day is a UL, and each event is an LI. My jQuery is: $("#colSun, #colMon, #colTue, #colWed, #colThu").sortable({ connectWith: '.timePieces', items: 'li:not(.lith)' }).disableSelection(); To make all LI's sortable except those with class "lith" (day names). User can drag an event from day to day, or add new events by clicking a button, which appends a new dragable event (LI) to the fist UL (Sunday). I want to make each day accept only up to 10 events. How do I do this? Thanks in advance!

    My application works just fine until, in some unidentified conditions, it begins throwing this errors: When these errors start appearing, they appear in all over the application, no matter the code is built using ObjectDataSource or SqlDataSource. However, apparently, if the code uses some "classic", code-behind data-binding, that code does not throw errors (they do not show in the application event log), the page is displayed but it does not contain any data.... Please HELP tracking these very strange errors !!!!!!   • Display issue with jQuery dialog: form shows as separate window

    On my button click, the jQuery dialog appears with just the title and buttons. When you mouseover, then you see the form inputs in front of the dialog covering the buttons.   • Opening href in jQuery Dialog

    Okay, so I've got the following code to create a dialog of a div within a page: $('#modal').dialog({ autoOpen: false, width: 600, height: 450, modal: true, resizable: false, draggable: false, title: 'Enter Data', close: function() { $("#modal .entry_date").datepicker('hide'); } }); $('.modal').click(function() { $('#modal').dialog('open'); }); All working fine. But what I want is to also be able to open a link in a dialog window, kinda like... <a href="/path/to/file.html" class="modal">Open Me!!</a> I've done this before by hardcoding the path: $('#modal').load('/path/to/file.html').dialog('open'); but we can't hardcode the path in the javascript (as there will be multiple coming from the database) and I'm struggling to understand how to get this to work. I'm also pretty sure that the answer is really obvious, and I'm merely setting myself up to be humbled by the clever folk here at StackOverflow, but I've scratched my head for long enough this afternoon, so my ego has been put away, and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction...     I have somewhat of a strange question that is not really technical, but I do hope to collect meaningful advice. I'm building a large web application, basically a photo sharing community site. As part of this site, logged-in users can go to their profile, from which they can see their own things (images, comments, votes) as well as edit their details and preferences. Users can also see profiles of others users (their images, comments, votes), but of course not edit their details. The question I have is simple but it keeps bothering me: What to call the personal links and content of a user?     One of the most intriguing items in the recently released Visual Studio 2010 Feature Pack 2 is the ability to create and edit UI tests in Silverlight. Here is an example of a coded UI test. I haven't had much time to use it yet, but for people who have, I am curious as to what your thoughts are. Is this something you have found to be particularly useful? I would like to be able to automate a significant amount of regression testing that we are currently performing manually.     I have been tasked with using coded UI to measure performance on a proprietary windows desktop application. The need is to measure how long it takes for the next page/screen to display after a user clicks on a control. For example - a user enters their ID and PW and clicks sign-in. The need is to measure how long it takes for the next screen to display when the user clicks the sign-in button. I understand the need to define what indicates the screen is loaded and ready for use. One approach is to use control.WaitForControlReady and use BeginTimer/EndTimer. Is coded ui a dependable and accurate way of measuring time? Is WaitForControlReady the best method to determine when a control is ready for use?

  • Jquery Tabs - Change css depending on a specific tab

    So, I am working in this page http://universidadedoingles.com.br/text-tabs/tabs-text.html As you guys can see, I have four tabs and an arrow right below, I need to do that the arrow go below the selected tab, if a click on tab 3, that arrow should go below tab 3, simple as that! but I don`t know! You also can see that when the page loads on tab 1 and you click on tab 2 the effect I want works pretty well, here`s the jquery I am using for that: $(document).ready(function() { $("a.tab2").click(function() { $(".arrow-spacer").addClass("tabs2"); }); }); That`s it, thank you vey much for any kind of help. p.S - i am using a mac, so theres no IE for testing yet, this looks good in Safari and Chrome.

  • Initialize content of a jQuery remote tab on initial page load

    I'm using the jQuery tabs library to create a set of remote (i.e., ajax loaded) tabs. However, to avoid the initial page load being empty until the ajax request finishes, I'd like to include the content for the initial tab with the initial page download. I've got this generally working by providing a div in the initial page load that matches the title of the tab, but even though this content appears immediately, as soon as I initialize the tabs it does the ajax request IN ADDITION which is both wasteful and causes a flicker. My basic question is how can I get jQuery tabs to NOT do an ajax request for the initially selected tab, and get this content as part of the initial page load, while still loading the other tabs dynamically. The complication is that I can't hard code the ids/hrefs for which tab is the "initial" one since the initial tab will change based on available content. I'm sure there is some kind of hacky way to do this with javascript rewriting the URLs of tabs dynamically before I initialize the tabs but I'm looking for a cleaner solution. Any ideas?

  • How do I keep child elements together with parent jQuery sortable.

    I have a list of items like this... <ol> <li> <span></span> <img src="image.png" /> <p>Image Caption</p> </li> </ol> And I want to be able to sort the LI's but not the sub elements, they should just move with their parent. I am using the jQuery to do that... $('ol li').sortable({ 'cursor': 'move' }); And its working but not moving the whole lot just the element you clicked i.e. the <p>, <img> or <span> I can't figure out how to solve this so I looked about and found an option called 'items': '> li' which was recommended but upon using this nothing drags any more but using firebug + jquery plugin I can see there is a sortable on the <li> still. Not sure what to do, example here: http://clareshilland.unknowndomain.co.uk/ Press ctrl+l to login. Enter the login details: Username: clarePassword: demo Select 'edit' from under then 'image' portion of the menu. The sortables should be those polaroids. Thanks in advance, another one I've been banging my head on the table with.

  • How can I drag from a connected vertical list to the first item of a another list below with jQueryUI Sortable?

    Hi all, I have have several ULs vertically down a page. They are setup using jQueryUI's sortable(). My live example is: http://jsfiddle.net/pborreli/pJgyu/ I can drag from answers to make it the final element in questions. But when I drag from questions to answers the placeholder jumps to the second item in the questions list. At that point I can then drag it to the top. Any ideas why I am having this issue dragging from a list above to the first element of a list below? I've tried editing the padding and margin on both the lists and the sortable items.     I've got a few demo videos I've been making as tutorials, and I'm using a link to open a dialog box and put the demo video in that box. I use the same div to show other notes on the page when a user selects to view a complete note. The code I use to show the notes is jQuery('span.Notes').live('click', function(){ var note=jQuery(this).data('note'); jQuery('div#showNote').text(note); jQuery('div#showNote').append(''); jQuery('div#showNote').dialog({ modal: true, close: function(){ jQuery('div#showNote').dialog('destroy').empty(); } }); }); The code I use for the demo videos is VERY similar. jQuery('a.demoVid').click(function(){ var videoUrl=jQuery(this).attr('href'); jQuery('div#showNote').dialog({ modal: true, height: 400, width: 480, close: function(){ jQuery('div#showNote').dialog('destroy').empty(); } }); swfobject.embedSWF(videoUrl,'showNote','480','390','8.0.0'); return false; }); I can click on as many notes as I want, and the dialog opens up and shows the note. However, when I click the demoVid, the dialog opens, but then closing the dialog kills any other 'showNote' dialogs on the page, so I can't open any more notes, or demo videos.

  • jQueryUI Sortable won't accept connected Draggable on a nested UL

    I've posted an example here: http://jsfiddle.net/ericclemmons/LEHLX/2/ Really, what it comes down to is the classic "assigning users to groups" issue. I have a list of users and a list of groups, but I'd like to be able to have nesting of the groups: user "Eric" would be in "Users", "Web", and "Administrators". The problem is that I cannot drag a user to an empty <ul> in the list.
