• NHibernate, each property is filled with a different select statement

  I'm retrieving a list of nhibernate entites which have relationships to other tables/entities. I've noticed instead of NHibernate performing JOINS and populating the properties, it retrieves the entity and then calls a select for each property. For example if a user can have many roles and I retrieve a user from the DB, Nhibernate retrieves the user and then populates the roles with another select statement. The problem is that I want to retrieve oh let's say a list of products which have various many-to-many relationships and relationships to items which have their own relationships. In the end I'm left with over a thousand DB calls to retrieve a list of 30 products. Thanks. I've also set default lazy loading to false because whenever I save the list of entities to a session, I get an error when trying to retrieve it on another page: LazyInitializationException: could not initialize proxy If anybody could shed any light I would truly appreciate it. • Java library to partially export a database while respecting referential integrity constraints

  My production database is several GB's uncompressed and it's getting to be a pain to download and run locally when trying to reproduce a bug or test a feature with real data. I would like to be able to select the specific records that interest me, then have the library figure out what other records are necessary to produce a dataset that respects the databases integrity constraints and finally print it out as a list of insert statements or dump that I can restore. For example: given Author, Blog and Comment tables when I select comments posted after a certain date I should get inserts for the Blog records the comments have foreign keys to and the Author records those Blogs have foreign keys to.

• Auto-generated values for columns in database

  Is it a good practice to initialize columns that we can know their values in database, for example identity columns of type unique identifier can have a default value (NEWID()), or columns that shows the record create date can have a default value (GETDATE()). Should I go through all my tables and do this whereever I am sure that I won't need to assign the value manually and the Auto-generated value is correct. I am also thinking about using linq-to-sql classes and setting the "Auto Generated Value" property of these columns to true. Maybe this is what everybody already knows or maybe I am asking a question about a fundamental issue, if so please tell me.

• How do I do a join in ActiveRecord after records have been returned?

  I am using ActiveRecord in Rails 3 to pull data from two different tables in two different databases. These databases can not join on each other, but I have the need to do a simple join after-the-fact. I would like to preserve the relation so that I can chain it down the line. here is a simplified version of what I am doing browsers = Browser.all # <-- this is fairly small and can reside in memory events = Event.where(:row_date=>Date.today).select(:name, :browser_id) So as you can see, I want to join browsers in on the events relation, where browser_id should equal browsers.name. events is a relation and I can still add clauses to it down the line, so I dont want to run the query on the db just yet. How would I accomplish this?

• When should I write my own Look and Feel for Java Swing instead of customizing one?

  I have used a few different Look and Feels for Java Swing, but I don't really like anyone to 100% so I often end up with customizing it a lot. Sometimes I am thinking about if it is a better idea to write my own LaF (by extending an existing one), but I don't really know. For the moment, I mostly use Nimbus, but I change all colors (to darker ones) and rewrite the appearance of some components, like sliders and scrollbars. I also mostly customize all tables and I am thinking about to change the look of a few other components. When is it recommended to create a new Look-and-Feel instead of customizing one? • Bind a WPF combobox and get selecteditem to a richtextbox

  Hi, I am using a dataset on the server, in this dataset I have a datatable that calls a stored procedure and returns column names from three tables. I call this stored procedure using a web service. I manage to show all the column names in my combobox but when I want to click a button and insert selected column name into a richtextbox I get System.Data.DataRowView in the textbox instead. • InvalidOperationException sequence contains more than one element even when only one element

  I have three tables, tblCompany table, tblParts table and a link table between them tblLinkCompanyParts. Since tblLinkCompanyParts is a link table so the columns that it has are LinkCompanyPartID(primary key), CompanyID from tblCompany table and PartID from tblParts as foreign keys. I have tied them up in the dbml file. In code if I write LinkCompanyParts.Parts (where LinkCompanyParts is an object of the tblLinkCompanyParts type) to get to the corresponding Part object I get the "InvalidOperationException: Sequence constains more than one element". I have looked at the data in the database and there is only one Parts record associated with the LinkCompanyPartID. The stack trace reads like at System.Linq.Enumerable.SingleOrDefault[TSource](IEnumerable`1 source) at System.Data.Linq.EntityRef`1.get_Entity() at ... I read about SingleOrDefault vs FirstOrDefault but since the link table should have a one-one mapping therefore I think SingleOrDefault should work and besides "SingleOrDefault" statement is being generated behind the scenes in the designer.cs file at the following line return this._Part.Entity; Any ideas?

• How do I set a SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services Template to a Default Font?

  I'm creating a new template to create reports from at a later date. I know how to create one, and I know where to save it. However, the problem is this. Everything that is created on the report uses the default font of Arial with a size of 10pt. I need to set mine to default to Tahoma 11pt. I can create a mock title, mock tables, etc and save those to Tahoma 11pt, but any new controls that are used on any version of this report will default back to Arial 10pt. How do I fix this?

  I'm using two tables. First (friendlist), which contains users who are on the list of friends and the other table (members) that contains the basic data of the users. Friendlist looks like: id | myid | date | user ----------------------------------------- 001 | 50624 | 2010-01-01 | 32009 002 | 41009 | 2010-05-05 | 50624 003 | 50624 | 2010-03-02 | 23007 The column "myid" contains members who added other users (those from column "user") to their frindlist. I want to get the list of all users that I have added to list and those who add me to their friendlist. In this example, if my id is 50624, the list would look like: | allfriends | --------------- 32009 41009 23007 Then I need to check all users from "allfriend" list with data from the table "members". I want to get only the users with status 1. When an Item on a list is selected by single mouse click, i want my preview composite to show the data of the item.   I'm having two tables: A [ID, column1, column2, column3] B [ID, column1, column2, column3, column4] A table will always be subset of B table (meaning all columns of A are also in B). I want to update a record with a specific ID in B with their data from A for all columns of A. This ID exists both in A and B. Is there an UPDATE syntax or any other way to do that without specifying the column names, just saying "set all columns of A"? I'm using postgresql, so a specific non-standard command is also accepted (however, not preferred). Thanks.

  I have 3 tables (follows, postings, users) follows has 2 fields - profile_id , following_id postings has 3 fields - post_id, profile_id, content users has 3 fields - profile_id, first_name, last_name I have a follows.profile_id value of 1 that I want to match against. When I run the SQL statement below I get the 1st step in obtaining the correct data. However, I now want to match the postings.profile_id of this resulting set against the users table so each of the names (first and last name) are displayed as well for all the listed postings. • Is there any framework for Windows Forms, DB driven application development/prototyping?

  I'm writing simple database driven application, 80% of functionality is CRUD operations on about 15 tables. Coming from web development background I figured I can cover almost all of these CRUD cases with Rails scaffolding or say Django admins. So I started to look around for Rails/Django-like framework but for Windows Forms applications (ofcourse I understand that "rich client" application development significantly differs from a web development and I'm not expecting anything really similar). I was surprised that except for a variety of ORMs (let's call it Model-layer) it seems like I'm left with little choice when it comes to View-Controller layer. Maybe I'm missing something? PS. I evaluated Visual Studio DataSet Designer, but it seems to work only for the most simple cases, and requires additional code for any slightly nontrivial task. There's this webpage where the tables are rendered from dynamic context (from multiple different datasources, and each of them uses a different layout to represent essentially the same real world concept). As a result, this table is binded to a bean, and it's columns/layout are generated from this bean. Now I need to add a command link on a specific column, equivalent to <a4j:commandLink value="#{actBean.Ids}" action="#{actBean.genDetails}"> <f:setPropertyActionListener target="#{actBean.Ref}" value="#{cont}"/> </a4j:commandLink> in a JSF page.   I usually use ORM instead of SQL and I am slightly out of touch on the different JOINs... SELECT `order_invoice`.*, `client`.*, `order_product`.*, SUM(product.cost) as net FROM `order_invoice` LEFT JOIN `client` ON order_invoice.client_id = client.client_id LEFT JOIN `order_product` ON order_invoice.invoice_id = order_product.invoice_id LEFT JOIN `product` ON order_product.product_id = product.product_id WHERE (order_invoice.date_created >= '2009-01-01') AND (order_invoice.date_created <= '2009-02-01') GROUP BY `order_invoice`.`invoice_id` The tables/ columns are logically names... it's an shop type application... the query works... it's just very very slow... I use the Zend Framework and would usually use Zend_Db_Table_Row::find(Parent|Dependent)Row(set)('TableClass') but I have to make lots of joins and I thought it'll improve performance by doing it all in one query instead of hundreds... Can I improve the above query by using more appropriate JOINs or a different implementation? Many thanks.

  I used sqlite to populate a DB with some Tables in it. I made a function at another javascript page that executes the database & selects some values from the table. I have this query SELECT type_id, type_name FROM room_type WHERE id NOT IN (SELECT room_type FROM reservation WHERE start_date >= '$start_date' AND end_date <= '$end_date') What the query does is it selects the rooms that are not booked between the start date and end date. Also, as you can see from the reservation table, we also have 'number of rooms booked between the two dates' factor also... I need to add this 'no.of booked rooms between the two dates' factor also in to the query... The query should return the type of rooms for which at least one room is free between the two dates. I worked out the logic but just can't represent it as a query....! How will you do this...? Thanks for your suggestions..!

  I just did some testing for Int PK join Vs Guid PK. Tables structure and number of records looking like that: Performance of CRUD operations using EF4 are pretty similar in both cases. As we know Int PK has better performance rather than strings. So SQL server execution plan with INNER JOINS are pretty different Here is an execution plan. As i understand according with execution plan from attached image Int join has better performance because it is taking less resources for Clustered index scan and it is go in two ways, am i right? May be some one may explain this execution plan in more details?

• Optimizing Mysql to avoid redundancy but still have fast access to calculable data

  An example for the sake of the question: I have a database which contains users, questions, and answers. Each user has a score which can be calculated using the data from the questions and answers tables. Therefore if I had a score field in the users table, it would be redundant. However, if I don't use a score field, then calculating the score every time would significantly slow down the website. My current solution is to put it in a score field, and then have a cron running every few hours which recalculates everybody's score, and updates the field. Is there a better way to handle this?
