• Data Warehouse: One Database or many?

  At my new company, they keep all data associated with the data warehouse, including import, staging, audit, dimension and fact tables, together in the same physical database. I've been a database developer for a number of years now and this consolidation of function and form seems counter to everything I know. It seems to make security, backup/restore and performance management issues more manually intensive. Is this something that is done in the industry? Are there substantial reasons for doing or not doing it? The platform is Netezza. The size is in terabytes, hundreds of millions of rows. What I'm looking to get from answers to this question is a solid understanding of how right or wrong this path is. From your experience, what are the issues I should be focused on arguing if this is a path that will cause trouble for us down the road. If it is no big deal, then I'd like to know that as well.

• problem with Doctrine i18n in Symfony

  i have table data i want to internationalize. i added this code in my schema.yml: I18n: fields: [name] and another table with a suffix "_translation" was created. the problem is that this table's id column is not auto-incremented. so when adding fixture data there will be a problem. i wonder if there is a way to make this column auto-incremented, or else i have to manually correct this for a lot of tables everytime i want to add fixture data. thanks.

  I have two tables, events and photos, which relate together via the 'Event_ID' column. I wish to select ONE random photo from each event and display them. How can I do this? I have the following which displays all the photos which are associated. How can I limit it to one per event?   Is it possible to configure Hibernate reverse engineering and code generation tool in such a way that one-to-many relation between tables is mapped to entities inheritance instead of enrites relation? I have Person table and Employee table, which are related with the foreign key (Person contains basic information, Employee the rest). In my Java code I would like this relation mapped to inheritance Employee extends Person. This can be done by hand, but maybe I missed some custom configuration parameter that I can use. I couldn't find any official documentation - docs link on RedHat Hibernate page (http://www.hibernate.org/5.html#A10) is broken...

  I have two tables in sqlite: CREATE TABLE fruit ('fid' integer, 'name' text); CREATE TABLE basket ('fid1' integer, 'fid2' integer, 'c1' integer, 'c2' integer); basket is supposed to have count c1 of fruit fid1 and c2 of fruit fid2 I created a view fruitbasket; create view fruitbasket as select * from basket inner join fruit a on a.fid=basket.fid1 inner join fruit b on b.fid=basket.fid2; it works (almost) as expected. When I type pragma table_info(fruitbasket); I get the following output 0|fid1|integer|0||0 1|fid2|integer|0||0 2|c1|integer|0||0 3|c2|integer|0||0 4|fid|integer|0||0 5|name|text|0||0 6|fid:1|integer|0||0 7|name:1|text|0||0 The problem is that I cannot seem to SELECT name:1. How can I do it other than going back and re-aliasing the columns?

• Injecting relationships in DBIx::Class

  I have a handful of DBIx::Class::Core objects that model various database tables. For some of those models (those that have a 'queue' column), I have another class inject subs (basically, to 'move' the model object along it's queue states). I'd like to also have that class inject has_many relationships ala class($name)->has_many('queue_history','MySchema::Result::QueueHistory', { 'foreign.record_id'=>'self.id' }, { where => { type => $name }} ); but I can't seem to get the relationships to register properly (keep getting "No Such Relationship" errors - however, when calling the relationship method on the sources provides back the relationship). Any clues as to what's wrong?

• How do I get rid of extra lines in my output from Rails

  I am using Rails 2.1 to output tables from a database. But the output includes lots of extra lines and tabs. I am using a while loop with lots of nested if statements. • Preview result of update/insert query without comitting changes to database in MySQL?

  I am writing a script to import CSV files into existing tables within my database. I decided to do the insert/update operations myself using PHP and INSERT/UPDATE statements, and not use MySQL's LOAD INFILE command, I have good reasons for this. What I would like to do is emulate the insert/update operations and display the results to the user, and then give them the option of confirming that this is OK, and then committing the changes to the database. I'm using InnoDB database engine with support for transactions. Not sure if this helps but was thinking down the line of insert/update, query data, display to user, then either commit or rollback transaction? Any advise would be appreciated.

  I have asked this once before but i didnt get a very clear answer. I need to know how to make a rating script for a site. I have a form that submits a rating out of ten to mysql. How would you get the average rating to be displayed from the mysql column using php? One person suggested having two tables; one for all the ratings, and one for the average rating of each page. Is there a simpler method than this?

  I use EF for the back-end DataLayer in my asp.net websites. I create a class library and add the Model in it, reference it and use it from the ASP.NET Website. But this time, I generated the model from database but it seems does not implement IDisposable, and the methods I used to see are not there. DeleteObject , SaveChanges etc. There are only Two tables in the DB and the Model was generated with only the TableSets and two methods AddToTableSet ... Had anybody encountered such a problem?

In our website objects are users, teams, companies, channels and groups (please don't ask why there are groups and teams - it is complicated for me too, but teams are releated to user's talent) Users, teams, channels, companies and groups have all their own tables.   I'm trying to set up a query that shows the first post of each thread and is ordered by the date of the last post in each thread.   Forgive me if this is an easy question. I teach classes and want to be able to select those students who have taken one class, but not another class. I have two tables: lessons_slots which is the table for every class such as: -------------------- -ID name slots- -1 basics 10 - -2 advanced 10 - -3 basics 10 - --------------------- The other table is class_roll, which holds enrollment info, such as: -------------------- -sID classid firstname lastname- -1 1 Jo Schmo -2 1 Person Two ... -13 2 Jo Schmo --------------------- What I want to do, I select everyone who has not had the advanced class (for example). I've tried doing SELECT * FROM lessons_slots LEFT JOIN class_roll ON lessons_slots.ID = class_roll.classid WHERE lessons_slots.name != 'advanced' But that doesn't work. Any ideas?

• Login fails after upgrade to ASP.net 4.0 from 3.5

  I cannot log in using any of the membership accounts using .net 4.0 version of the app. It fails like it's the wrong password, and FailedPasswordAttemptCount is incremented in my_aspnet_membership table. (I am using membership with mysql membership provider.) I can create new users. They appear in the database. But I cannot log in using the new user credentials (yes, IsApproved is 1). One clue is that the hashed passwords in the database is longer for the users created using the asp.net 4.0 version, e.g 3lwRden4e4Cm+cWVY/spa8oC3XGiKyQ2UWs5fxQ5l7g=, and the old .net 3.5 ones are all like +JQf1EcttK+3fZiFpbBANKVa92c=. I can still log in when connecting to the same db with the .net 3.5 version, but only to the old accounts, not the new ones created with the .net 4.0 version. The 4.0 version cannot log in to any accounts. I tried dropping the whole database on my test system, the membership tables are then auto created on first run, but it's still the same, can create users, but can't log in.

  I've got a SQL Server database with the the following tables: Client (ClientID, ClientName) SalesAgent (AgentID, AgentName) Item (ItemID, Description) Purchase (PurchaseID, ClientID, Price) PurchaseSalesAgent (PurchaseID, AgentID) Each purchase is only ever one item to one client but there can have been multiple agents involved. I want to return the following list of columns: ClientName, Description, Price, Agents Where Agents is the names of all the agents involved in the purchase. Either as a comma separated list or as multiple columns with one agent in each. I'm looking for a way that's compatible with SQL Server 2000 but I'd also be interested in if there's a better way of doing it in SQL Server 2008.

• DataReader or DataSet when pulling multiple recordsets in ASP.NET

  I've got an ASP.NET page that has a bunch of controls that need to be populated (e.g. dropdown lists). I'd like to make a single trip to the db and bring back multiple recordsets instead of making a round-trip for each control. I could bring back multiple tables in a DataSet, or I could bring back a DataReader and use '.NextResult' to put each result set into a custom business class. Will I likely see a big enough performance advantage using the DataReader approach, or should I just use the DataSet approach? Any examples of how you usually handle this would be appreciated.

  Hi, I have a system with 2 different projects, one is called LINQ_Extensions and the other is ORM_Linq. On ORM_Linq i have the LINQ diagram with the SQL tables "converted" in clases. One of the Class is called "Tipos_Pago" In the other project i have another class (partial class) "Tipos_Pago". I want to use the method OnValidate to validate the properties include in the class "Tipos_Pago", so i create this partial class. In the 2 projects i put the same NameSpace "ORM_Linq"(I changed the NameSpace of the project "LINQ_Extensions" to have the same of the project "ORM_Linq") After those chages, Visual Studio give me this error: Error 1 No defining declaration found for implementing declaration of partial method 'ORM_Linq.Tipos_Pago.OnValidate(System.Data.Linq.ChangeAction)' C..\Tipos_Pago.cs 13 22 Extensiones_Linq I don't have any Idea of what happend, can someone help me? The questions are: Context: Large (50M - 500M rows) OLAP Prep tables, not NOSQL, not Columnar. MySQL and DB2 1) Does the order of keys in a PK matter? 2) If the cardinality of the columns varies heavily, which should be used first. For example, if I have CLIENT/CAMPAIGN/PROGRAM where CLIENT is highly cardinal, CAMPAIGN is moderate, PROGRAM is almost like a bitmap index, what order is the best? 3) What order is the best for Join, if there is a Where clause and when there is no Where Clause (for views) Thanks in advance.

  I have 2 tables, 1 with countries, 1 with states. The states table has a column with Population. I'm using entities and I have created a List of states for the countries public class TblCountries { //Entities for my table country ... public List<tblStates> States { get; set; } } So now I can for example List all the states that belong to a country. Now what I want to do is count the population, so I can show the population that of an entire country. I tried using in my view @foreach (var item in Model.Countries) { @Html.DisplayFor(modelItem => item.States.Count<population>) } But this doesn't work, anyone know how to do this?   I have already setup syncing with Microsoft Sync Framework, and now I need to add fields to a table. How do I re-provision the databases? The setup is exceedingly simple: Two SQL Express 2008 servers The scope includes the entire database Using Microsoft Sync Framework 2.0 Synchronizing by direct access. Using the standard new SqlSyncProvider Do I make the structural changes at both ends? Or do I only change one server and let Sync Framework somehow propagate the change? Do I need to delete the _tracking tables and/or the stored procedures? How about the triggers? Has anyone been using the Sync Framework? Please help.
