  I have asked another question on Hebbian learning before, and I guess I got a good answer which I accepted, but, the problem is that I now realize that I've mistaken about Hebbian learning completely, and that I'm a bit confused. So, could you please explain how it can be useful, and what for? Because the way Wikipedia and some other pages describe it - it doesn't make sense! Why would we want to keep increasing the weight between the input and the output neuron if the fire together? What kind of problems can it be used to solve, because when I simulate it in my head, it certainly can't do the basic AND, OR, and other operations (say you initialize the weights at zero, the output neurons never fire, and the weights are never increased!)

How comes the output of this code is: [0] [0, 1] [0, 1, 2] [0, 1, 2, 3] [0, 1, 2, 3, 4] ?   I want to use multiple aggregate functions in a query. All the examples i have seem on aggregate functions however, are trivial. Typically, they are of the form: SELECT field1,agg_func1, agg_func2 GROUP BY SOME_COLUMNS HAVING agg_func1 OP SOME_SCALAR Where: OP: is a boolean operator (e.g. <, = etc) SOME_SCALAR: is a scalar (i.e. a constant number) What I want to know is if it is possible to write (IN ANSI SQL) queries like: SELECT field1,agg_func1, agg_func2, agg_func3 GROUP BY SOME_COLUMNS HAVING (agg_func1 OP1 agg_func2) OP2 (agg_func2 OP3 agg_func3) Where: OP[N] are boolean operators or ANSI SQL clause operators like 'BETWEEN', 'LIKE', 'IN' etc. Also, assuming this is possible (I have not seen any documentation saying otherwise) are there any efficiency/performance considerations (i.e. penalties) when the HAVING clause consists of a boolean expression combining the output of the aggregate functions - instead of the normal comparison of the output of the aggregate with a constant number (e.g. min('salary') 100 ) - which is often used in the most banal examples involving aggregate functions?

• Neural Network Inputs and Outputs to meaningful values

  I'm trying to determine how to transform my "meaningful input" into data for an Artificial Neural Network and how to turn the output into "meaningful output". The way I can always see of doing it is by convering everything to categories with binary values. For example, rather than outputting age, having a 0-1 for <10, a 0-1 for 10 - 19, etc. Same with the inputs, where I might be using for example, hair colour. Is the only way to turn this into input to have Blonde 0-1, Brown 0-1, etc? Am I missing some entire topic of ANNs? Most of the books and similar I read use theoretical examples.

  Hi all I can't work out how to get the mysql client to return the number of rows deleted to the shell when running a delete. Does anyone know what option will enable this? Or ways around it? Here's what i'm trying, but i get no output: #!/bin/bash deleted=`mysql mydb -e "delete from mytable where insertedtime < '2010-04-01 00:00:00'"|tail -n 1` I was expecting something like this as the output from mysql: deleted 999999 Which is why i have the tail -n 1 so i only pick up the count and not the column name. Any help would be most appreciated.

• Is there a cap on the number of modules WinDbg can see?

  Does anyone know if there is a cap on the number of DLLs WinDbg can see ? I believe Visual Studio was once capped at 500 but I can't find a source for this claim outside of some second hand accounts at work. I'm trying to debug a hairy scenario and WinDbg's stack trace is incomplete. According to Process Explorer, the module I'm interested in is loaded but it doesn't show up in the output of 'lm' in WinDbg. Suspiciously, said output is exactly 500 modules long, even though I know there are many more than that loaded, leading me to believe WinDbg isn't seeing DLLs beyond the first 500. Can anyone confirm ? Or suggest some other reason why a loaded module might not show up in 'lm' ?

  I'm trying understand how to interpret the output of, and use, the Lisp debugger. I've got a pretty simple Backtrace for the evaluation of my function, but I cann't seem to work out how to use it to find out in which Lisp 'form' in my function the exception occurred. I'd appreciate any clues as to what I should be doing, to find the source of the error. I've attached a screen shot (if it's too small to read I can re-post it in parts), with the debug output, the function and the repl (please ignore my very wrong function, I'm just interested in learning how to use the debugger properly). In addition, I hit 'v' on the first frame to go to the source, but this resulted in the error at the bottom of the screen.

• Python IPC, popen too slow

  i need to run a subprocess (./myProgram) form python script and get output, actually i do this: import subprocess proc = subprocess.Popen('./generate_out', shell=False, stdout=subprocess.PIPE, ) while proc.poll() is None: out = proc.stdout.readline() data = doStuff(out) print(data) but is slow, sometimes pass a lot of time between the output produced by ./generate_out and the print(data), knowing that my doStuff() function is very fast, i think there is some buffer slowing down my pipe... Notes: ./generate_out, generates potentially an unlimited number of lines of finite length each. It seems that when too few chars are put in the pipe between the two processes nothing happens, then when enough is produced i get a huge print (non the expected behaviour!) sometimes i wait many seconds (10-20 and more) between generate_out print and python print) what can i do? maybe communicate() is faster? anithing else?   Hi all, What is the best way to transfer changes that include new and deleted directories and/or new and deleted (actually moved) files in those directories from a subversion repository on linux to windows? I do my developments on linux using a subversion repository, but I have to test my changes on windows as well. My windows machine has a tortoisesvn repository which I tried to patch with a svn diff output. This failed miserably since my patch contains a renamed (i.e. deleted and added under a different name) directory, a new directory and the files in there. Do I do things wrong by just applying the svn diff output as a patch in tortoisesvn? For now I think that my best option is to have the windows tree on the same svn version as the linux tree and just copy the entire changed directory over the existing directory. Would that work?

  I just spent a few hours pulling my hair out over this. If I copy and paste the command string, and paste it into the terminal it works perfectly. Also if I replace the command string with something like $command = "echo test > test.txt"; Then this has no problem creating the text file. What could I possibly be doing wrong here???

It works when there are less than 100 records but when it goes over 100 records the count resets for some reason. • Calling software modules (Java, Perl, etc.) from R

  I've recently started using R for Natural Language Processing tasks and find that a lot of applications are available in Java and Perl (for my purposes). For example: A few perl modules are available to find distance measures between words by querying Wordnet. I am aware of the R Wordnet package, but it does not perform the tasks that these CPAN modules do. Many Java packages for NLP are out there, which I'd like to use from within R. I know of rJava, RSPerl, the simple system command amongst others, but I'd like more examples of how I could make calls to Java and Perl applications from R. Recently I tried capturing console output from a perl script. cat( 'print "Hello World\n";',file="hello.pl" ) system(command="c:\Perl64\bin\perl hello.pl") system(command=paste(Sys.getenv("COMSPEC"),"/c","C:\Perl64\bin\perl hello.pl")) None of the above system commands showed 'Hello World' on the R console. I've used "system" before to run perl scripts to perform tasks without wanting to capture console output. Any hints and redirection to other more extensive sources of information would be highly appreciated. Thank you

• Logging fatal/parse errors in PHP5

  I'm writing an error logging service that will be integrated into websites running on my server, that will email me error batches, etc. So I've been trying to find out if there's a way to handle fatal and parse errors, however not using the tricks to handle it in PHP code (output buffer, shutdown function). I'm quite happy to write some C code or something to handle it outside of my PHP code. I would also like to issue a redirect if possible (my sites use output buffering so there shouldn't be any headers sent). I'm pretty sure this could be done with a PHP module, but I've never written one and have no idea where to start.
