• Sending Email using Java

  Hi Guys, I want my Java application to send out emails to users. But I cant get a good solution. Now, I got some on Google but they use a SMTP server which I dont have. I was wondering if setting up one on my Linux machine would be easy? So, I am using mailx now to send out emails but it sends emails from root which is definately not good. Is there any way to send out emails from a proper email using java? like you can do in php and other languages?

• How to export javascript generated report to pdf?

  Hello... I made a reporting engine with javascript for my project... The problem is with printing.. Although with page-break and css i can produce a good looking report, i want to export that report to a pdf in order to be printed better without ,the url,page title and other stuff that browsers add. Note in Chrome there isnt page setup!!! I am using java for server side. i think sending via ajax the Html of the report somehow and return a url for the pdf report maybe... i am looking for a good tool for this thank you

• Storing data with a stand-alone C++ application

  I work with Apache, PHP, and MySQL for web development and local applications. For the past couple of years I have slowly been learning C++ and want to build an application this summer. Specifically, I want to make a "library" application in which I can store information about the books, CDs, and records that I own. I know this type of app exists, but I want to learn C++ and this seems like a good way to go about it. Here are a few questions: Is it possible to create a stand-alone application that does not require a database for storing data? If the answer to #1 above is "yes", is it a good idea to do this for an application that could potentially need to manage a lot of data? What data-storage options would you recommend for use with a C++ application? Thanks!

• Bootstrap jquery methods Magento's prototype lib

  Wonder if anyone has had this issue. I've integrated Bootstrap nicely into a Magento theme I'm building, all good. That is, until I try using the accordian functions. There seems to be an issue with the code finding the Prototype Libs Methods instead of jQuery's. I've tried the usual fixes, $ - jQuery and no conflict but it only works when I disable the prototype lib - which obviously is not good. Anyone out there come across this and can advise me on a work round? At the moment I'm resigned to using Scriptaculous for the accordian.

• Should i use TabContainer for multiple pages?

  I'm considering if it is a good idea to use an ASP.Net TabContainer-Control in the way that every TabPanel contains content of a different page. For example: Next i want to implement in my application is the masterdata management. Normally i would create one aspx page for every masterdata-table (f.e. Customer - MD_Customer.aspx). Then i would add a link into my Menu to this page. Now i'm thinking of creating one aspx page for all(Masterdata.aspx) with a Tabcontainer and an UpdatePanel for every type of Masterdata. The link it the menu could have an additional MDType as URL-Parameter. My main concerns are related to performance(one "page" for every TabPanel currently means 7 "pages" in one) and maintainability because of increasing complexity. Is it a good approach or a bad idea?   I am having a lot of trouble finding good information on how to call a standard SOAP/WSDL web service with Android. All I've been able to find are either very convoluted documents and references to "kSoap2" and then some bit about parsing it all manually with SAX. OK, that's fine, but it's 2008 so I figured there should be some good library for calling standard web services. The web service is just basically one created in NetBeans. I would like to have IDE support for generating the plumbing classes. I just need the easiest/most-elegant way to contact a WSDL based web service from an Android based phone.

  I have an localized string which needs to take a few variables. However, in localization it is important that the order of the variables can change from language to language. So this is not a good idea: NSString *text = NSLocalizedString(@"My birthday is at %@ %@ in %@", nil); In some languages some words come before others, while in others it's reverse. I lack of an good example for the moment. How would I provide NAMED variables in an formatted string? Is there any way to do it without some heavy self-made string replacements? Even some numbered variables like {%@1}, {%@2}, and so on would be sufficient... is there a solution?

• Pass structured data from C++ app to ASP.NET web service.

  I have Visual C++ application that needs to communicate with a ASP.NET web service. Specifically, the app needs to pass structured data (e.g. objects that contain lists of structures, etc) as a parameter to one of the service methods. The C++ application is already generating an xml document that contains this data. The document is generating using an xml library, so it should always well-formed. What is a good method for passing this data to the web service? I'm thinking about passing the document to the web service as a string parameter, then deserializing to a .NET object based on an xsd. But, I hear that passing an xml doc as a string parameter is not recommended. So, my questions: What are the pitfalls associated with sending the document as a string parameter, assuming that the document itself is always well-formed? Assuming the above is a bad idea, what are some good alternate approaches?

• Template apps for iPhone

  Is there a good place to get starter apps for iPhone, where you choose from any of a large set of permutations?...for instance with a nav bar and a flip screen and a 3 deep table view, with Core Data support etc. I guess what I was hoping for is some kind of wizard where you can check a few boxes and have a working app as a starting point....but more than just the 3 or 4 choices that come with xCode. If not a wizard, just a nice set of a couple dozen permutations. Also....is there any good sample apps out there that show the difference between identical apps, one which uses Interface Builder and one not? Aside from being handy for myself, I'd think these would be great as a teaching tool. I've googled a bit and come up with nothing.

• Advantages of GitHub over Bitbucket for Git Repositories [closed]

  Now that Bitbucket also supports Git repositories, it seams to me that it is a good alternative to GitHub, especially since its free plan includes unlimited private repositories, which is not available on GitHub. Yet, GitHub seams much more popular. Are there any major reasons to choose GitHub as the hosting site for Git repositories instead of Bitbucket? (Although I have no problems with making my personal projects publicly available in general, I like the idea of being able to make the switch from public to private or vice versa any time I want. But if there are some good reasons to use GitHub, I would be willing to give up this freedom.)

  i have a good, working valid non-corrupted database in mssql that i want to revert to a point in time how is that done? the standard RESTORE command requires a full backup as a starting point, and then log backups thereafter. i cant understand why this must be done from a backup. if my db is good and the logs are OK, why cant i just revert with a STOPAT from the live logs in the db? one dba suggested that whenever i want to restore i should THEN make a log backup and then RESTORE with STOPAT. i believe it would work but sounds a little backwards any better ideas? thank you very much

• Do you know any build systems with decent support for parallelization?

  Hi, I am looking for a build system (working on ms windows) that has good support for parallelization of tasks/targets (or whatever you call them). To be more specific - during build (that is initiated on MS Windows machine) I need to copy source files to a number of different machines (which are not necessarily running Windows) and start a remote job on each of them - and I really like to do that on all machines at once. Does anyone know a build system that's capable of executing such a task in parallel. From what I googled, the options currently available are: -j switch in make - but i don't know if nmake supports this -some custom nAnt tasks -msbuild has some form of support for parallelization - seems similiar to make (meaning you don't specify what to do in parallel, just specify that it would be nice to build things that way) -fake (f# make) is written in functional programming language which are known to have good parallelization support - but I'm not very skillful in functional programming area. Any other solutions I could explore?

Cannot find too much documentation on this - best I came up with was someone having a go a few years ago to see what was supported on retro virus site.   The original question is related to overloading operator= and I like to share my findings as it was nontrivial for me to find them. I cannot imagine reasonable example to use (a=b) as lvalue. With the help of IRC and google I've found the next article: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc301415.aspx it provides two examples. (a=b)=c f(T& ); f(a=b) but both a bit not good, as first violate associativity and I believe that it is bad practice. The second one give me the same feeling. Could you provide more good examples why it should be non constant?

• Running script constantly in background: daemon, lock file with crontab, or simply loop?

  I have a Perl script that queries a database for a list of files to process processes the files and then exits Upon startup this script creates a file (let's say script.lock), and upon exit it removes this file. I have a crontab entry that runs this script every minute. If the lockfile exists then the script exits, assuming that another instance of itself is running. The above process works fine but I am not very happy with the robustness of this approach. Specifically, if for some reason the script exits prematurely and the lockfile is not removed then a new instance will not execute properly. I would appreciate some advice on the following: Is using the lock file a good approach or is there a better/more robust way to do this? Is using crontab for this a good idea or could I better write an endless loop with sleep()? Should I use the GNU 'daemon' program or the Perl Proc::Daemon module (or some other equivalent) for this?
