  • How to prevent robots from automatically filling up a form?

    I'm trying to come up with a good enough anti-spamming mechanism to prevent automatically generated input. I've read that techniques like captcha, 1+1=? stuff work well, but they also present an extra step impeding the free quick use of the application. (I'm not looking for anything like that please). I've tried setting some hidden fields in all of my forms, with display: none; However, I'm almost certain a robot (which is essentially a program) can be configured to trace that form field id and simply not fill it. Do you implement/know of a good anti automatic-form-filling-robots method? Is there something that can be done seamlessly with HTML AND/OR server side processing, and be (almost) foolproof? (and please no JS, one could simply disable it, and there goes my anti-spam method). Btw I'm trying not to rely on sessions for this (like, counting how many times a button is clicked to prevent overloads).

    Concept: Lets say we have table Properties with columns id and name (lets say with some predefined values: "Good" "Better" "Best"). Another table Users has column property_id with many to one relation on Properties (property_id = id). Users has default value on property_id, lets say 1 which means "Good". We might have another table analogue to Users however with default property, lets say "Better". What I need is ability to change default value for Users or other tables in administrator's panel. In mysql I can set default value for column like this: ALTER TABLE <Table> CHANGE <Column> DEFAULT <NEW_DEFAULT_VALUE> I can retrieve default value: SELECT DEFAULT(<Column>) FROM <Table> LIMIT 1 Is it possible to achieve this concept with Doctrine? What I actually need is such method in my table class: class UserTable extend Doctrine_Table { /* ... */ getDefaultProperty() { } setDefaultProperty($value) { /* $value can be either integer or Doctrine_Record */ } }

My requirements is just: persistance storage for schema less data; some simple in-proc quering; good to have transactions and versioning; ruby API; map/reduce is aslo good to have; should work on shared hosting What I do not need is REST/HTTP interfaces (I will use it in-proc). Also I do not need all scalability stuff.

  • Hide Adsense on localhost

    I have a site built in Ruby On Rails which has many ads in different templates and views. It is hard to actualy remove each ad between tests and deployments. I don't know whether Google approves many impressions (even if without clicks) on localhost. How do you deal with this issue? Maybe it is a good solution to set a variable/constant available everywere to enable/disable ads easily. Do you think it is a good solution? If so, how do I declare a global variable for views?

    Hi, I found this article (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb967663.aspx) and thought great thats exactly what I'm trying to do. I want to programatically build a product brochure using content controls and openXML. The article in question refers to an accompanying video which unfortunately does not appear to be available, nor does the code. I posted a comment to ask where they are but in the meantime does anybody know of a good example. There are plenty of examples of binding/merging one record into a openXML Word document. But I want to bind a whole list of records to create a product brochure. Can anyone point me to good tutorial? Thanks

  • Fast, cross-platform timer?

    I'm looking to improve the D garbage collector by adding some heuristics to avoid garbage collection runs that are unlikely to result in significant freeing. One heuristic I'd like to add is that GC should not be run more than once per X amount of time (maybe once per second or so). To do this I need a timer with the following properties: It must be able to grab the correct time with minimal overhead. Calling core.stdc.time takes an amount of time roughly equivalent to a small memory allocation, so it's not a good option. Ideally, should be cross-platform (both OS and CPU), for maintenance simplicity. Super high resolution isn't terribly important. If the times are accurate to maybe 1/4 of a second, that's good enough. Must work in a multithreaded/multi-CPU context. The x86 rdtsc instruction won't work.

    what is best way to model many-to-many relationship? lets say we have a two classes , Team and Player any given Player can be in multiple Team s any Team can have as many Player s as they like I like to call methods like playerX.getTeamList() to get the list of all the Team s he/she is in teamY.getPlayerList() to get the list of all the Player s in the team (or have some other way to do this effectively) I can think of two ways of doing this , but they just don't feels like good oop pattens. can you think of any good ways , perhaps a design patten ?

  • Running script constantly in background: daemon, lock file with crontab, or simply loop?

    I have a Perl script that queries a database for a list of files to process processes the files and then exits Upon startup this script creates a file (let's say script.lock), and upon exit it removes this file. I have a crontab entry that runs this script every minute. If the lockfile exists then the script exits, assuming that another instance of itself is running. The above process works fine but I am not very happy with the robustness of this approach. Specifically, if for some reason the script exits prematurely and the lockfile is not removed then a new instance will not execute properly. I would appreciate some advice on the following: Is using the lock file a good approach or is there a better/more robust way to do this? Is using crontab for this a good idea or could I better write an endless loop with sleep()? Should I use the GNU 'daemon' program or the Perl Proc::Daemon module (or some other equivalent) for this?

    Hi, I want to add an progress bar into my C# based application. I would like to know what is the good way of updating its value at particular events? My problem is, I have single function in UI which does all the processing.This function in turn calls many more functions, creates objects, updates database, etc. (basically performs all the work) and returns values in an output file. I have access to that function only. So in this how to update the progressbar's value at the end of each step? What is the best practice for this kind of situation? What is the good way to keep UI logic and business logic seperate? I want to avoid writting progressbar related code in my library code. Please suggest some solution. Thanks and Regards,

    i got an idea for making php template engine fast and user friendly but i'm not sure if it's good or bad. the idea is to create a fake template engine: creating a template editor in control panel that let user see something like this: <html> <head> <title>{title}</title> </head> <body> {content} </body> </html> what the editor actually does is to replace all php code like <?php echo $this->title; ?> to user friendly {title} but it's not really replacing it just in the view when the user save the template the template actually saved as fast pure php template. the question is this a good idea or bad ? your answers is highly appreciated.

    I need to design and I'm looking in to using WCF to accomplish this. Basically here is how I have it: Server process: Generate list of files to transfer across multiple FTP/SFTP sites in to a queue. Client(s): Talk to server to get files to transfer. Transfer the files acquired. All the data necessary to transfer the files will be present. Once transferred successfully, notify the server to remove it from the queue. Also, make sure no other client is trying to perform the transfer. Are there are any good articles/design patterns to use? I think it sounds like a good candidate for WCF since ideally it would be load balanced against a few machines. Development will be in C#/.NET 3.5.

How do I create an iterator that hides a nested for loop? For instance, I have a class Foo, inside of the Foo is a Bar, and inside of the Bar is a string. I could write for (const Foo& foo : foo_set) for (const Bar& bar : foo.bar_set) if (bar.my_string != "baz") cout << bar.my_string << endl; but instead I want to be able to do something like: for (const string& good : foo_set) cout << good << endl; How do I do something like this?

    I want to use Python to make a configuration file generator. My roughly idea is feeding input with template files and some XML files with the real settings. Then use the program to generate the real configuration files. I got several questions: Is there any open source configuration generator program? (what could be the keyword), I wonder if there's anything can be added/modified in the design. Does Python have good XML parser module? Is it good idea to use XML file to save the original settings? I've been thinking to use Excel since it's more intuitive to maintain, but harder for program to parse. Not sure how people deal with this. Hope the community can give me some suggestions.     i'm using this function to highlight the results from mysql query: function highlightWords($string, $word) { $string = str_replace($word, "<span class='highlight'>".$word."</span>", $string); /*** return the highlighted string ***/ return $string; } .... $cQuote = highlightWords(htmlspecialchars($row['cQuotes']), $search_result); the problem is, if i type in 'good', it will only show my search results with a lower-case 'g'ood and not 'Good'. how do i rectify this?

But when i create flash animation then attach to tiles-based character of my game's project i have a problem. Because of tiles-based game with fixed tile sizes and my character animation have each width and height size for each frame. When i attach animation to character code. Example , with my game if i press key to move character , then my character will playing "moving" frame , because of this frame animation have difference width and height then my game function check collisions fail , I want to ask you how can i solve this problem ?.     I often find myself storing data in a mysql database, and then wanting to display all sorts of stats about my data, specifically stuff like 'how many rows do I have for this date, or that date'. Does anyone know of (or could write) a good tutorial on this subject? Ideally a good tutorial would overview: Best practices when storing the data (i.e. what formats to use, how to use them servertime vs. generated time, etc.) Best practices when selecting data from the database with php (i.e. how to sort rows by date, how to retrieve only rows from a certain date, or a certain hour, etc).. Timezones and other issues that might come up. Thanks in advance.

  • How to organize database access code in Android project?

    I have created a ContentProvider for my main Sqlite table, pretty much following NotePad example from SDK (although I am not sure whether I will ever be exposing my data to other apps). However, I need to create lots of other, non-trivial queries on that and other tables and views. A good example would be queries to extract some statistics from the base data, averages, totals etc. So what's the best place for this code in an Android project? How it should be related and connected to the Uri-based data access exposed by a Provider? Any good examples out there?
