  • Is it safe to use an IDE to SATA power adapter for an extended period of time?

    I just bought a computer from HP and they failed to include SATA power connectors with the power supply other then the one HD and DVD drive. Meanwhile I have two IDE to SATA power adapters that came with my "USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE cable" http://www.amazon.com/USB-2-0-SATA-Cable-Adapter/dp/B001OORN06 3rd pic on the left. I was wondering if I would just open up my computer and use it to plug it my SATA drives to the IDE power sources and mount it to the motherboard, would it damage my drives in the long run or have any other significant effects. A friend told me he knows people who have had their HD burn out because of this

  • How much time do PHP/Python/Ruby *programmers* spend on CSS?

    Not sure about you guys, but I detest working in CSS. Not that it is a bad language/markup, don't get me wrong. I just hate spending hours figuring out how to get 5 pixels to show on every browser, and getting fonts to look like a PSD counterpart. So a question (or two) for programmers out there. How much time (%) do you spend on web markup? Do you tend to do this type of tweaking, or do your designers?

  • Can I change from BIOS IDE mode to AHCI mode at any time?

    Currently my Windows 7 computer is crashing during startup, after loading the AMD achix64s.sys driver, if I enable BIOS AHCI mode for the disks. It boots fine with IDE mode. Since I need my computer working, I am wondering if I can just use IDE mode for now, and later change to AHCI mode, when I figure out what is wrong. Background: I was running RAID mode, which needed additional drivers to install/boot Windows. But the MoBo RAID is flaky so I'm trying to switch to using a Windows mirrored volume instead - for that I expected to use AHCI mode.

  • Should I invest time in learning Java language these days? (question from a greenhorn)

    Hi experts, Assuming you've already had a chance to look through the lambda syntax proposed for Java7 (and the other things that have happened with Java, after Oracle has bought Sun + obvious problems in Java Community Process), what do you think is the future of Java language? Should I, as a Java greenhorn, invest time in learning Java language (not talking about the core JVM, which definitely will survive anything, and worth investments), or concentrate on Scala, Groovy, or other hybrid languages on the JVM platform (I've came into Java world from PHP/Ruby).   • How to configure Time Machine to also backup an connected external hard drive?

    I've inserted a sweet SSD into my MacBook Pro, but it had limited space. So I had to export 60 GB of Data to an external hard drive. But now, when I run TimeMachine to backup my stuff, of course it only backups what's on the system disk. Is there a way how to also backup the connected external hard drive together with TimeMachine? Maybe there's a trick to get this work, with a fake folder that's actually the mounted drive? What could I do?

  • Why does my iTunes use so much CPU time?

    I have a roughly 2 year old Macbook (10.5). I have iTunes 10. When iTunes is playing MP3s, I see CPU usage of the iTunes process in the system monitor ranging from 65%-75%. When I pause the music, I see CPU usage of about 65%-75%. I do not have any visualisations going, to my knowledge I have not turned on any CPU destroying features, my music library isn't tiny, but it's hardly huge (3GB). This is mildly annoying when I'm plugged into the wall as I only have slightly longer compile times, but if I am out and about, this is a major drain on the battery. Using VLC I see CPU loads of ~= 10% at the most when listening to music and generally lower. What the heck is iTunes doing?

    I know that I can use gprof to benchmark my code. However, I have this problem -- I have a smart pointer that has an extra level of indirection (think of it as a proxy object). As a result, I have this extra layer that effects pretty much all functions, and screws with caching. Is there a way to measure the time my CPU wastes due to cache misses? Thanks!

You are a program that is accepting an infinitely long stream of characters (for simplicity you can assume characters are either 1 or 0). At any point, I can stop the stream (let's say after N characters were passed through) and ask you if the string received so far is a palindrome or not. How can you do this using less sub-linear space and/or time.

  • Fast response on first Socket I/O request but slow every other time when communicating with remote serial port

    I'm using sockets to pass Serial commands to a remote device. And the response to that request is sent back and printed out. However, I am having a problem in that the first time it is instant but the rest of the time it can take up to 20 seconds to receive a reply.   • Does Exchange Cache Mode affect email markers refresh time in other Outlook clients?

    We have users who share a single email account by using the Additional Email option under their accounts. Now, they want to assign emails to one another using the markers alongside the emails. We noticed that when changing the color of a marker, one Outlook client updated immediately, but another Outlook client did not. It looked like they were both set to "Cached Mode". Is it likely that caching effected the refresh of the client? Would it be better to turn off cached mode if we are using Outlook this way?

  • How does JSON compare to XML in terms of file size and serialisation/deserialisation time?

    I have an application that performs a little slow over the internet due to bandwidth reasons. I have enabled GZip which has improved download time by a significant amout, but I was also considering whether or not I could switch from XML to JSON in order to squeeze out that last bit of performance. Would using JSON make the message size significantly smaller, or just somewhat smaller? Let's say we're talking about 250kB of XML data (which compresses to 30kB).

    In a project, we have lots of Windows user that have bought licenses for 1 month, 2 month,... 1 year and so... CURRENT SITUATION (WHAT I DON'T WANT): When users are created and added to the OS, a solid expiration date is given. WHAT I WANT: Users' expiration date should be calculated automatically after first login. The user might not need his account right when purchases the license. In another words: When a license is purchased at Jan 1, he should use the license until Feb 1. No matter whether he really logs in or not. He cannot come Feb 5 and begin using his license because that has expired then. What I want is that when he comes at Feb 5 and begins using, the license update until March 5. I then tried: $('#canvas').append(('<div class="tile"></div>').css({left: leftPos, top: topPos}));, but that gives the error "Object <div class="tile"></div> has no method 'css'". How can I add the element and set its style at the same time?
