• iPhone app: How to implement in-app purchased game levels

  So, I understand that it's possible to set up in-app purchases for iPhone apps to purchase non-consumables like game levels. I understand the logic behind the purchase part, but what I don't understand is, how can I deliver the new game level. For example: I build an app that contains the first level and they purchase additional levels. Is it better to build all the other levels into the app and whenever they purchase the app, it unlocks it with a plist entry or something? That doesn't seem very update-able to me. Every time I come up with a new level, I'd have to update the app. So, what I don't understand then, is what is how do I package up a level and download it as a separate entity that can accessed by the game? Would the level just be some XML with images in a ZIP folder or something? How does the level get added to the game? What are best practices for this type of thing? I Googled and have found NOTHING about this. I'm a little bit confused by the concept and any help would be appreciated. I'm not looking for someone to write the game for me, I just need pointed in the right direction so I can develop it on my own.

• Proof of library bug vs developer side application bug

  I have a problem with a specific java client library. I wont say here the problem or the name of the library because my question is a different one. Here is the situation: I have made a program that uses the library. The program is a class named 'WorkerThread' that extends Thread. To start it I have made a Main class that only contains a main() function that starts the thread and nothing else. The worker uses the library to perform comm with a server and get results. The problem appears when I want to run 2 WorkerThreads simultaneously. What I first did was to do this in the Main class: public class Main { public static void main(String args[]) { new WorkerThread().start(); // 1st thread. new WorkerThread().start(); // 2nd thread. } } When I run this, both threads produce irrational results and what is more , some results that should be received by 1st thread are received by the 2nd instead. If instead of the above, I just run 2 separate processes of one thread each, then everything works fine. Also: 1.There is no static class or method used inside WorkerThread that could cause the problem. My application consists of only the worker thread class and contains no static fields or methods 2.The library is supposed to be usable in a multithreaded environment. In my thread I just create a new instance of a library's class and then call methods on it. Nothing more. My question is this: Without knowing any details of my implementation, is the above situation and facts enough to prove that there is a bug in the library and not in my programm? Is it safe to assume that the library inside uses a static method or object that is indirectly shared by my 2 threads and this causes the problem? If no then in what hypothetical situation could the bug originate in the worker class code?

• Address Match Key Algorithm

  I have a list of addresses in two separate tables that are slightly off that I need to be able to match. For example, the same address can be entered in multiple ways: 110 Test St 110 Test St. 110 Test Street Although simple, you can imagine the situation in more complex scenerios. I am trying to develop a simple algorithm that will be able to match the above addresses as a key. For example. the key might be "11TEST" - first two of 110, first two of Test and first two of street variant. A full match key would also include first 5 of the zipcode as well so in the above example, the full key might look like "11TEST44680". I am looking for ideas for an effective algorithm or resources I can look at for considerations when developing this. Any ideas can be pseudo code or in your language of choice. We are only concerned with US addresses. In fact, we are only looking at addresses from 250 zip codes from Ohio and Michigan. We also do not have access to any postal software although would be open to ideas for cost effective solutions (it would essentially be a one time use). Please be mindful that this is an initial dump of data from a government source so suggestions of how users can clean it are helpful as I build out the application but I would love to have the best initial I possibly can by being able to match addresses as best as possible.

• Combine Text with a Draggable Mask AS3.0

  So I have an image that is the size of the stage: img_mc. Then I drew a small rectangle: mask_mc. The idea is to make a "window" of the small rectangle, view img_mc through the window, and be able to drag the window around. The following code works fine but I want to add text to the mask - "Drag Me!" or whatever. But if I group text with the mask it breaks down. If I make a separate text_mc I can drag it around but it's not part of the mask. How can I combine text with a mask? (sorry if this question is pathetically easy!) • Adding BarButtons to a UINavigationBar after presenting a modal view controller.

  I'm using the template for a "Utility Application". In the "FlipSideViewController", I added an IBOutlet for a UINavigationController, navController. In the code, I added the navController just fine. The rootViewController loads perfectly: navController.viewControllers = [[NSArray arrayWithObject:rootViewController] retain]; [self.view addSubview:navController.view]; I changed the color of the navController just fine: navController.navigationBar.tintColor = [UIColor colorWithRed:0.6 green:0.75 blue:0.6 alpha:1.0]; navController.navigationBar.translucent = NO; I make a button (note: "done" refers to a IBAction that dismisses the modalviewcontroller): UIBarButtonItem *backButton = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithTitle:@"TEST" style:UIBarButtonItemStyleDone target:self action:@selector(done:)]; I make a navItem using that button: UINavigationItem *backNavItem = [[UINavigationItem alloc] initWithTitle:@"TESTTEST"]; [backNavItem setRightBarButtonItem:backButton animated:YES]; I try to add that button: [navController.navigationBar pushNavigationItem:backNavItem animated:YES]; This above code fails miserably. I apparently can't add buttons to the navController because: * Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'Cannot call pushNavigationItem:animated: directly on a UINavigationBar managed by a controller.' Do I have to make a separate UINavigationBar that's somehow connected to my navController? I tried going that route but with no avail.

• Assigning static final int in a JUnit (4.8.1) test suite

  I have a JUnit test class in which I have several static final ints that can be redefined at the top of the tester code to allow some variation in the test values. I have logic in my @BeforeClass method to ensure that the developer has entered values that won't break my tests. I would like to improve variation further by allowing these ints to be set to (sensible) random values in the @BeforeClass method if the developer sets a boolean useRandomValues = true;. I could simply remove the final keyword to allow the random values to overwrite the initialisation values, but I have final there to ensure that these values are not inadvertently changed, as some tests rely on the consistency of these values. Can I use a constructor in a JUnit test class? Eclipse starts putting red underlines everywhere if I try to make my @BeforeClass into a constructor for the test class, and making a separate constructor doesn't seem to allow assignment to these variables (even if I leave them unassigned at their declaration); Is there another way to ensure that any attempt to change these variables after the @BeforeClass method will result in a compile-time error? Can I make something final after it has been initialised?

• Google Federated Login vs Hybrid Protocol vs Google Data Authentication. Whats's the Difference?

  Hi, I am trying to implement Google Authentication in my website, in which I would also be pulling some Google Data using the Google Data API and I am using Google App Engine with Jinja2. My question is, so many ways are mentioned to do it. I am confused between Google Federated Login,Google Data Protocol, Hybrid Protocol. Are these things the same or different ways to do the same thing. From what I read and understood, which might be incorrect, Google Federated Login uses the hybrid protocol to authenticate and fetch the google data. Is there a proper guide to implement any one of these in python. Examples which I found at the google link are kind of different. From what I understood,correct me if i am wrong, I have to implement only the OpenID Consumer part. In order to implement Google Federated Login in Python, I saw that we need to download a separate library from the openid-enabled.com but I found a different library for the google data implementation at http://code.google.com/p/gdata-python-client/ As you can see, I am confused a lot :D. Student has a list of courses he attends, also he has a list of properties, that is all for this student. Next, Course entitity. It may contain a list of students that attend it. But in fact, the whole structure looks like this: the starting point is Student, with it's PK we can look a list of his properties, then we look into the STUDENT_COURSE and extract both FK of the Course entity and also the Status of the combination, it would look like "Student named bla bla, with all his properties, attends math and the status of it is "ACTIVE". now, quotation 1) Each DAO instance is responsible for one primary domain object or entity. If a domain object has an independent lifecycle, it should have its own DAO. 2) The DAO is responsible for creations, reads (by primary key), updates, and deletions -- that is, CRUD -- on the domain object. Now, first question is What are entities in my case? Student, Course, Student_Course, Status = all except for StudentProperties? Do I have to create a separate DAO for every object?

• HTML5 <video> callbacks?

  I'm working on a site for a client and they're insistent on using HTML5's video tag as the delivery method for some of their video content. I currently have it up and running with a little help from http://videojs.com/ to handle the Internet Explorer Flash fallback. One thing they've asked me to do is, after the videos finish playing (they're all a different length), fade them out and then fade a picture in place of the video --- think of it like a poster frame after the video. Is this even possible? Can you get the timecode of a currently playing movie via Javascript or some other method? I know Flowplayer (http://flowplayer.org/demos/scripting/grow.html) has an onFinish function, is that the route I should take in lieu of the HTML5 video method? Does the fact that IE users will be getting a Flash player require two separate solutions? Any input would be greatly appreciated. I'm currently using jQuery on the site, so I'd like to keep the solution in that realm if at all possible. Thanks!

• iPhone UIView Animation Disables UIButton Subview

  So I've got a problem with buttons and animations. Basically, I'm animating a view using the UIView animations while also trying to listen for taps on the button inside the view. The view is just as large as the button, and the view is actually a subclass of UIImageView with an image below the button. The view is a subview of a container view placed in Interface Builder with user interaction enabled and clipping enabled. All the animation and button handling is done in this UIImageView subclass, while the startFloating message is sent from a separate class as needed. If I do no animation, the buttonTapped: message gets sent correctly, but during the animation it does not get sent. I've also tried implementing the touchesEnded method, and the same behavior occurs. • Using Gdata Calendar API for PHP App to create a calender system with event ownership

  Hello, I'm working on a PHP app, and I'm trying to find the best way to set up a calendar system. First let me describe the intended function of the system: The application has multiple users who can login simultaneously. Each user should be able to add their own events and display them on their "profile." Also, on another page, the events should be able to be shown all together (from all users) and from each individual users exclusively. Since Google Calendar has a nice calendar-looking interface, I thought I would work with the GData APIs. Originally, I thought this would make things easier. But then it seems that if I want to represent event ownership, either each user would have to have a google account or somehow they all would each have to have a separate calendar. Thus, the application would have to create the calendar (if it does not exist) and be able to edit only their calendar. Two questions: Can I somehow use the GData APIs to accomplish my goal? (Mainly event ownership.) Should I just create my own calendar like application? Thanks!

We need to have additional parameters; we could use "-" to separate parameters as it makes them look similar to the SEO Slug, or we could/should use something else? \product\ABC123-BOYTOY-2\boys\toys\fly-your-own-helicopter This is product=ABC123, in Category=BOYTOY and Page=2. We also want to keep the hierarchy as flat as possible, and thus I think: \product-ABC123-BOYTOY-2\boys\toys\fly-your-own-helicopter would be better - one level less. • How should bug tracking and help tickets integrate?

  I have a little experience with bug tracking systems such as FogBugz where help tickets are issues are (or can be) bugs, and I have some experience using a bug tracking system internally completely separate from a help center system. My question is, in a company with an existing (home-grown) help center system where replacing it is not an option, how should a bug tracking system (probably Mantis) be integrated into the process? Right now help tickets get put in for issues, questions, etc and they get assigned to the appropriate person (PC Tech, Help Desk staff, or if it's an application issue they can't solve in the help desk it gets assigned to a developer). A user can put a request for small modifications or fixes to an application in a help ticket and the developer it gets assigned to will make the change at some point, apply their time to that ticket, and then close the ticket when it goes to production. We don't currently have a bug tracking system, so I'm looking into the best way to integrate one. Should we just take the help tickets and put it into the bug tracking system if it's a bug (or issue or feature request) and then close the ticket if it's not an emergency fix? We probably don't want to expose the bug tracking system to anyone else as they wouldn't know what to put in the help center system and what to put in the bug tracker... right? Any thoughts? Suggestions? Tips? Advice? To-dos? Not to-dos? etc...

  This question is a combination of regex practice and unit testing practice. Regex part I authored this problem separateThousands for personal practice: Given a number as a string, introduce commas to separate thousands. The number may contain an optional minus sign, and an optional decimal part. There will not be any superfluous leading zeroes. Here's my solution: String separateThousands(String s) { return s.replaceAll( String.format("(?:%s)|(?:%s)", "(?<=\\G\\d{3})(?=\\d)", "(?<=^-?\\d{1,3})(?=(?:\\d{3})+(?!\\d))" ), "," ); } The way it works is that it classifies two types of commas, the first, and the rest. In the above regex, the rest subpattern actually appears before the first. A match will always be zero-length, which will be replaceAll with ",". The rest basically looks behind to see if there was a match followed by 3 digits, and looks ahead to see if there's a digit. It's some sort of a chain reaction mechanism triggered by the previous match. The first basically looks behind for ^ anchor, followed by an optional minus sign, and between 1 to 3 digits. The rest of the string from that point must match triplets of digits, followed by a nondigit (which could either be $ or \.). My question for this part is: Can this regex be simplified? Can it be optimized further? Ordering rest before first is deliberate, since first is only needed once No capturing group Unit testing part As I've mentioned, I'm the author of this problem, so I'm also the one responsible for coming up with testcases for them. • IRC Server configuration possibilities

  I need to know a couple of things, concerning IRC servers that I couldnt directly find out over google (or werent clear enough for me to be sure if it actually works) I'm working at a larger community site, and wanted to deliver an in-page chat. Since it would be a nice feature to let people access it from outside too, over their own clients, I tought implementing an IRC Server would be the best solution (probably dedicated, I'll have to teach myself a couple of things for that) I plan to include a Web-based IRC client over an APE Client / Server. The problem is, I want to strip down the user rights, to disallow many functionalities that IRC would offer: Change of nicknames: The user logs in over the Page login, and I'll automatically create an IRC auth for this user with that password. So basically, he would connect to the IRC client over a button. And after connecting, he shouldnt be able to change his nickname at all Creating channels: I want the possibility to create channels, but not from 'normal' users. Basically, I would prefer to set up basic channels that are public, and if a user really creates an own channel, that one should be private and via invitation (is that possible?) Private conversations: private conversations should be filtered out from the allaround IRC client, into separate 'in-browser-windows' that I create over JS. I guess I just have to filter the stuff coming from IRC - or is there a better solution to that? Only 'registered' users have access: Like I said, if someone registers on the page, I would like to create an IRC 'account' for him. Users that arent registered on the page, cant access the IRC server at all (or get thrown out). Mainly to avoid spammers or bots from outside. Is this stuff solvable over IRC? I've read some FAQ's and Instructions for IRC OP's and servers, but I couldnt find a clear answer - it seems that everyone can do pretty much everything - I would like to configure it in a way that user possibilities are more cut down. Basically, giving users the possibility to chat, but not more. So the Question basically is, how possible / solvable this issues are allaround, or if I have to find other solutions for this.

• Data sharing amongst JPA Entities

  Setup: I have a simple web app that has a handfull of forms, each on a separate page. These forms represent patient data. There is a one-to-one relationship between patient and all these forms/entities. Each form maps directly to a db table and a JPA entity, maybe not the best architecture but it works and is simple. Question: If form/entity A and form/entity B share a common chunk of data (one of more fields), what is the best way to handle that in JPA. I.E. - If the data gets inserted via form A, I need it to show up in form B as existing data and vice versa. In other words its logical for both entities to contain that data. I believe I will have to move the common data into its own entity and define the relationships that way, but I have tried many different ways and none gets me all the way, at least with basic JPA. Can this be done through pure JPA relationships or will I have to write a bunch of code to make this happen manually. Not looking for code specifically, just the correct way to model this data.   I was reading this page and I found the following statement: MVC in Java Server Pages Now that we have a convenient architucture to separate the view, how can we leverage that? Java Server Pages (JSP) becomes more interesting because the HTML content can be separated from the Java business objects. JSP can also make use of Java Beans. The business logic could be placed inside Java Beans. If the design is architected correctly, a Web Designer could work with HTML on the JSP site without interfering with the Java developer. Interestingly in my textbook I pulled the following quote: In the MVC architecture... the original request is always handled by a servlet. The servlet invokes the business logic and data access code and creates beans to represent the results (that’s the model). Then, the servlet decides which Java Server Page is appropriate to present those particular results and forwards the request there (the JSP is the view). The servlet decides what business logic code applies and which JSP should present the results (the servlet is the controller). The two statements seem slightly contradicting. What is the best way to use beans: should we place business logic in them or should we only place results in them? Are there ways in which beans are inadequate for representing a model?

• Is there any way to access files in your source tree in Android?

  Hi all, This is a bit unorthodox but I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to access files stored in the src tree of my applications apk in Android. I'm trying to use i-Jetty (Jetty implementation for Android) and rather than use it as a separate application and manually download my war file, I'd rather just bake i-jetty in. However, in order to use (easily) standard html/jsp I need to be able to give it a document root, preferably within my application's apk file. I know Android specifically works to prevent you from accessing (freely) the stuff on the actual system so this may not be possible, but I'm thinking it might be possible to access something within the apk. One option to work around this would be to have all of the files stored in the res directory and then copy them to the sdcard on startup but this wouldn't allow me to automatically remove the files on uninstall. To give you an idea of what I've tried, currently, the html files are stored in org.webtext.android Context rootContext = new Context(server_, "/", Context.SESSIONS); rootContext.setResourceBase("org/webtext/webapp"); Returns a 404 error. final URL url = this.getClassLoader().getResource("org/webtext/webapp"); Context html = new WebAppContext(url.toExternalForm(), "/"); Blows up with a NullPointerException because no URL is returned from the getResource call. • Modularity in Flex

  I'm working on a pretty big application for Flex/Air. We are using GraniteDS and Tide to interact with the model from our Java EE server. I've been reading about modularization and Modules in Flex. The application has already been built, and I'm figuring a way out to re-design some classes and parts. From what I've read so far, I understand a Module is a different swf which can be dynamically load. Most of the tutorials/documentation are oriented to Flash "programmers" who are using Flex or Air instead of real developers, so that makes online resources harder to get. What I can't understand - yet - is how to encapsulate ActionScript classes or MXML views under this module. I've separated some of the code into libraries. For example, the generated code from Granite is in a "server" library. But I would like to separate parts of the logic with its Moderators, Controllers and Views. Are modules the way to go? Is there a "modules for dummies" or "head first Flex Modules for programmers" like tutorial in order to get a better perspective in order to build my architecture? When to choose libraries and when to choose modules? I'm using Flex 3.5, and a migration to Flex 4 is way far into the future, so no Flex 4 answers please, thanks!

  hi all, i want to clarify my initial question for a possible solutions from any savior out there. Say i have 3 excel sheets one for each user for data entry located in separate workbooks to avoid excel share workbook problems. I also have a master sheet in another workbook where i want individual data enter on those sheets precisely sheets 1 should copy to the next available row of sheet 1 in the master sheet as the users enter them. i need a vba code that can copy each record without copying a duplicate row in the master sheet but highlight the duplicate row and lookup the initial record in a master sheet and return the name of the Imputer looking up the row say column ( I) where each user sign there initials after every row of entry like below. So if the duplicates exist a pop up message should be display that a duplicates exist and return the initial Imputer say MLK in COLUMN( I) to any user inputting in the individual worksheets other than warehouse sheets (master). WHY? UPDATES I tried making the join query into a separate query and using that as my record source, but it made no difference at all. If I go to the query for Form3 and view it in datasheet view, I can see that the information that should be pulled into the form is there. It just isn't showing up on the form.

• Am I under risk of CSRF attacks in a POST form that doesn't require the user to be logged in?

  I'm probably being a total noob here, but I'm still uncertain about what a CSRF (Cross-Site Request Forgery) attack is exactly. So lets look at three situations... 1) I have a POST form that I use to edit data on my site. I want this data to be edited only by users that are logged in. 2) I have a site, which can be used by both users who are logged in as well as guests. Parts of the site are for logged in users only, but there are also POST forms that can be used by all users - anonymous and not (for example a standard contact form). Should the contact form be safeguarded against CSRF attacks? 3) I have a site which doesn't have an authentication system at all (well, perhaps that's unrealistic, so lets say it has an admin site which is separate from the rest of it and the admin part is properly safeguarded). The main part of the site is only used by anonymous users. Do the POST forms on it need to be safeguarded? In the case of 1) the answer is clearly yes. But in the case of 2 and 3 I don't know (and is the difference between 2 and 3 even significant?).

• Unit tests for deep cloning

  Let's say I have a complex .NET class, with lots of arrays and other class object members. I need to be able to generate a deep clone of this object - so I write a Clone() method, and implement it with a simple BinaryFormatter serialize/deserialize - or perhaps I do the deep clone using some other technique which is more error prone and I'd like to make sure is tested. OK, so now (ok, I should have done it first) I'd like write tests which cover the cloning. All the members of the class are private, and my architecture is so good (!) that I haven't needed to write hundreds of public properties or other accessors. The class isn't IComparable or IEquatable, because that's not needed by the application. My unit tests are in a separate assembly to the production code. What approaches do people take to testing that the cloned object is a good copy? Do you write (or rewrite once you discover the need for the clone) all your unit tests for the class so that they can be invoked with either a 'virgin' object or with a clone of it? How would you test if part of the cloning wasn't deep enough - as this is just the kind of problem which can give hideous-to-find bugs later?

• Combine 3 select fields and validate as one in my User model in ruby on rails 3

  Ok I have 3 select boxes for selecting date of birth. I have constants setup in my User model to provide months, years etc.. Anyway I can successfully validate these select boxes separately. What I want to do is combine the :day, :month and :year and store in :birthday and validate the whole date as one so I can return 1 error rather than 3 separate ones. Also doing this will make it easier to store the validated date in my birthday field in my database.
